WOW... Ive never thought about it before, but lightsabers are pure kendo, with a touch of fencing.

I am studying this sequence as Darth Maul using the duel bladed saber and I can see why Nick says it's Kendo as a lot of the sparing is very much like Kendo

Yeah, they said in an interview that it happened in the sequence where Maul is on his back and parried Obi-Wan's blow an inch from his face. The aluminum blade bent from the force and hit him in the face... You can watch that stunt being rehearsed in its original form over at Gillardstunts, the stunt coordinator's channel.

Ray Park did all of his own stunts. All of those flips, butterfly twists and fight sequences were all Ray Park. No stunt double. He was a WuShu champion in the 90s. Ewan and Liam on the other hand, were heavily doubled.

I wonder if some Katana, fencing or any sword experts can do a reaction video on these Jedi light saber stunts particularly from this StarWars Episode 1. I'm sure it will be a constructive collaboration you know for future fight scenes.

Why did the Jedi dress like That Obi-Wans tattooin disguise. Makes no sense to me for Obi-Wan to parade around dressed like a Jedi while in hiding… they should have been dressed in all Black like Luke in Jedi. Lucas’s logic makes no sense in the prequels.

I’ve seen the Plinkett reviews too, and while I love them, they are not perfect critiques. The Jedi uniform was established way back in 1983, when the force ghost of the original Anakin was also wearing the same clothes as Obi-Wan. I’d also like to think that Ben Kenobi wasn’t “parading” around his whole time on Tatooine until the events of the movie. He was this weird hermit who lived by himself out in the dangerous Dune Sea

The Jedi dress with simplicity and modesty because that's they're whole thing. Obi-Wan wasn't dressed as a Jedi instead of an old desert dweller; the Jedi just dressed like old desert dwellers, because Vanity is beneath the Jedi. Your desire for them to dress in all-black, I presume, comes more from a place of it being cool rather than storytelling as you may have convinced yourself. The black outfit was meant as symbolism to convey that Luke was closer to the dark side than ever (like Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine, who both wore all black), with the sliver of whire showing that he wasn't consumed by it. To put all of the Jedi in black would symbolize that they're close to the dark side, which they are not. This is why Mace Windu and Anakin Skywalker were depicted in darker robes than traditional Jedi; because they were the closest to the dark side. If they were to have different outfits than their garbs, it'd have to be different in a shapely way rather than a color way. Giving them more complex outfits, however, risks them coming off as vane and with too many wordly attatchment. The Clone Wars gave them armor, which makes sense, since they were in a war. It was serving a functional purpose rather than being there to look cool. I think this is the best solution. One might argue this still goes against their whole thing of being peace keepers rather than warriors, but the whole point of the Clone Wars was that it was when the Jedi were the least Jedi. It may even be fine in the Clone Wars era to make them cool for the sake of cool, but the Jedi of that time were still "holier than thou" about such things, despite their arrogance. One might argue that the Jedi shouldn't have been written the way they were, but no. This was always how they were going to be. It's 100% consistent with how they were portrayed in the OT. If you want something different from the prequel Jedi, then you don't agree with the OT Jedi.

It ended up not looking gritty or scary at all. It looks overcoreographed and overrehearsed. Lots of unnecessary twisting and twirling of the lightsabers just to make time for the opponent to move into position. And a lot of times the person on the defense is getting to a blocking position faster than the attacker because clearly they already know every single detail of the choreography. Now logically you yould easily say they're Jedi/Sith so of course they know the move of their opponent beforehand - but that doesn't matter, it ends up being boring and lifeless cinema.

Really? The duels in TPM were awesome to me. And ofcourse theyre gonna twirl around, it makes the light sabers seem that much more dangerous. If it so much as touches you at all, youre dead, so I find it rather natural that they swing around like that
@JQUE94

Well the intention was to show the Jedi in the prime, so basically how we have the NBA of the 50's and 60's compared to today's NBA athletes. And your point on the Jedi/sith possibly knowing each other's moves is valid because in the lore many sith and Jedi study and use multiple styles until they become comfortable with a Form.

@@JQUE94 My dude, no sane person cares about your lore, canon or any of that bullsh. We go to the cinema to see a compelling story and fight scenes that are visceral and exciting. Which is exactly why the original trilogy still works to this day and will always work even 500 years from now.
