I remember when the Vader theme played in the theater, we were all like “aaahhhhhhhhhh!” One of the best moments in the prequels.

People need to realize that he's still a kid in this movie and you can see that by the way he reacts to things like disappointment and love. He approaches them like a child. He throws tantrums when he doesn't get his way. He wasn't spoiled growing up, but in a way he's spoiled in the Force. He's so powerful yet so lost that he feels useless when he can't save someone's life when he feels like he should be able to. It's a struggle of futility.

Hayden really nailed this scene. I don't care what anyone says -- I think he is a great actor.

Ignoring the haters, I see Anakin struggling to comprehend the situation yet he is so conflicted, the death of his mother made him feel so angry and distraught. I love this scene because of his struggle in life itself.

No wonder why he killed the sand people. Anakin hates sand. SAND people.

Anakin's tone in this scene is the tone of a man with anger and pain, but at the same time is the tone of a whiny little baby having a temper tantrum.

1:50-2:12 Darth Sidious theme & Imperial March at the end. Sick foreshadowing! its little things like that, that make the prequels decent.

The tears in his eyes, the shaken voice, the way his lip quivered when he said “I hate them.” Really shows how unappreciated and underrated Hayden Christensen is as an actor. I’m telling you. It was only the crappy dialogue that made him seem bad but he’s very talented.

Yo guys, I just realized something... When Anakin says 1:09 ... it's actually true. He stopped Luke from dying.

A lot of the surface complaints about these movies go away when you realize we're not really supposed to like the Jedi, including Hayden Christensen's "awkward" and "whiny" performance. By this point he's spent half his life, including puberty, in what amounts to an emotion-suppressing, anti-sex cult. What part of that suggests that he should act like a healthy, well-adjusted human being? He's had no healthy teaching on how to process anger or grief, so when he's faced with those things head-on, he plunges straight into being a racist mass murderer. When Padme says "to be angry is to be human," he automatically rejects that, saying "I'm a Jedi!" as if that precludes being human. This scene explains how the Jedi screwed themselves, and why they needed to end. We might make fun of this scene, but I think it's not only the best in this movie, but one of the most powerful in the series.

Hayden is so good. He sound so lost, angry, confused, confident, all in the same speech. He nailed how complex the character was. And nailed the Luke childish in him. Perfect.

Why am I the only one who loves all 3 prequels? Hayden and his lines worked just fine imo for both this movie and rots.

Something about that Darth Vader theme at 2:10 really adds to the pain and suffering of Anakin

Say what you want about the acting in the prequels, but this scene proves that Hayeden can act. This is some great fucking acting

See, Hayden isn't too great of an actor but seriously, the script was so poorly written that it made even the great actors in the prequels look like a joke. For the first half of this scene, his acting is horrendous, but when he starts talking about killing the Tusken Raiders.. it's actually really solid on his part. He delivered the lines with raw emotion, communicating to the viewer his anger and hatred, but also the conflict because he knows that as a Jedi, he is never meant to hate and is meant to be compassionate. In my book, that part was one of his better moments in the movie, because I was actually able to feel the conflict he was feeling.. I can't say the same for most of the rest of the movie, though lol.

Padme should have went 2 Obi-Wan & told him about her & Anikin Because at this point he completely lost control

This is an really emotional scene and i think he sells it well honestly. You can sense conflict and pain and realization. Anyone who says his acting here is bad should try and recite those lines themselves and sell it better. It may give you some perspective

A quick reminder that Padme hearing about this had this reaction, and then hearing that Anakin did the same thing but to the Jedi temple made her die of heart break...

Wow. The scene is unbelievable, horrifying, sad, i can go on and on. In this universe, its honestly realistic for him to go on a killing spree like that. Losing his mother, the only hope he ever had to be happy and at peace. He now lives a life of anger, revenge, and darkness.

Darth Vader was born in this scene. One of the most powerful scenes in all the movies. The music tells you all you need to know. The next time he slaughtered men, women and children, he sacrificed the Jedi Order to become Dark Lord of the Sith.

He's a young guy who chooses the easier path of anger than the more painful path of forgiveness and healing. It's easy to imagine happening; he's Superman, and he actually has the power to express his rage.

The more I watch this scene, the more I appreciate how Hayden Christensen played this role.

He did a great job here it felt realistic. He didn’t have to throw a fit like movies these days

How many lives did anakin indirectly save that day, by eradicating several generations of slave driving, murderous raiders? How many lives could batman have saved if he'd simply killed the joker to begin with? Killing the tribe of sand people was considered anakin's first big swing to the dark side, but honestly, more lives were saved that day than taken.

Episode 2: He killed all sand people Episode 3: He killed all children Episode 4: He destroyed planet

This is it. This is the start of his path to Darth Vader

It hits more definitely when you realize this is also true when he kills the jedi in the temple

I always get shivers when I hear that Imperial March theme, that inevitable foreshadowing.

At first, Anakin says "I killed them" in disbelief like he wasn't in control of his actions. Then there is a shift to a darker side after Anakin goes into detail about what he did; that's when you realize that this wasn't just blind impulse rage, but something much more sinister.

01:50 is it just me or he's showing sime kind of pride in what he just did? Fuck Hayden nailed this scene!!!

I'm not that close to my mother but if I were in his situation and she died in my arms due to those tusken raiders.... yeah I'd probably do the same thing, especially during my teens. Anakin is better written than most people give credit for.

How can people talk shit on this scene? Every emotion and line here seems very reasonable given his circumstances, and he acted them out quite well. Maybe other parts of the film aren't the best, but in this scene Hayden's skills shine

People can debate Hayden's acting all they want and I agree with the flaws, but with that in mind, I notice how in this scene and after his mother dies, his lips quivering. I don't see that as an easy thing to act out.

even after this emotional outburst he still says "im a jedi. i know im better than this" meaning that even after all this anger and hatrid he is still trying to follow the jedi ways instead of questioning his mental health and facing the pain of HAVING HIS MOM LITERALLY DIE IN HIS HANDS

Honestly, dialogue aside this is a really good scene. Hayden acts the shit out of this. You can really feel the grieving son who just watched his mother die in his arms and lashed out. People clown on Padme for still being into him after this but it's very clear Anakin regrets it. He's being torn apart by his grief and his hate for the tuskans while also being ashamed of himself for lashing out in such a way. As he says, he's a Jedi and he's better than this

This scene shows that his transition from young benevolent jedi to genocidal henchman for an evil empire is legitimately reasonable and believable.

Not gonna lie as an adult this scene hits much more deeper and personal. "Your not all powerful, Ani..." "Well I SHOULD be!" At that point he knew his potential and what being "The Chosen One" was. He starts to create a god complex in himself. If he is raised to be a god, why not be it now for the better? Anakin's pain and anger is on the Jedi. He should be able to harness his power by his own independence and learn from it. But the jedi held him back because they wanted his power unlocked at the right time because hes "the chosen one" so does that unlock attack only a one shot deal? Well look what happens when you hold him back and not think for himself? He becomes more rebellious and second guesses himself and hindsights how he could've succeeded if he was given the chance which the jedi kept him on a constant short leash acting like overprotective parents. Anakin's anger and dark side intentions were created through the eviorment and people around him. Joker did the same thing. They didn't become villains through themselves, it was the cruel environment that grew them to a darker path.

Its funny i know but this scene is actually deep asf and hayden was so good in this role you feel and see his deep conflict with himself and his emotions everytime i watch these scenes and revenge of the sith i find myself bawling my eues out everytime

I have to say, Hayden Christensen absolutely nailed this scene. Sure, the dialogue may come off as a little corny, but his performance lets you know he's truly trying to make it work. And I think he succeeded. And honestly, I don't blame Anakin for massacring the Tusken Raiders. If a bunch of lowlife goons tortured my mother to death, I'd kill them all too. They deserved it after taking someone Anakin loved away from him.
