Star Wars: Episode I Racer - Now This Is Podracing 

Jon, the "random pods" that were backed in were racers you'd unlocked so that you could play them yourself. The "track favorite" of a given race will be unlocked if you get 1st place. Also, you can repair your Pod on the go in the middle of a race, it's kinda necessary for the later races

I had this game on the N64, and I really loved it. I was never really that big on racing games, and I'm not even that big into Star Wars, but damn I loved this game

I find it intriguing that there's a traction statistic yet the vehicles don't touch the ground.

"I'm going to come back with Stormtroopers and slaughter your race"..Jon would not even wait for the antsy teenager phase..straight to Sith Lord lol.

The Nostalgia is killing me on this. I'm gonna pick this up for sure! Though it was killing me internally how Jon didn't use the shortcuts.

I loved this game, I had it on PC and my grandma had it for N64. But then my cousins had Racer's Revenge, and I LOVED it! It had a lot of the things that Episode I racer was missing... like damaging opponents' podracers. But that game is nearly impossible to come by :(

I will always remember the frozen race in this game. The first Easter egg/skip I found on my own in my life was there.

Jon you can repair your pod during the race (if remember correctly you'll have to hold the 'R' key by default)

Personally, I hated Episode 2 the most. Never could buy into Padmé and Anakin. That entire romance is what I think is the worst part of the Prequels. I would have bought a drunken one night stand faster than that forced mess...

The circuit in the movie is actually the Boonta Classic which you unlock later in the game, its WAY longer than the first track in the game. Please make this into a series

This game was such a lot of fun! It even had a kickass arcade game with the two throttle handles.

I played this game for years and didn't know it had 90% of the things it had.

You know that part when you've played this game before and Jon complains it's too easy and then he gets his ass handed to him and you know he's still on one of the easy levels? I like that part.

Jon, the other pods get welcomed in, because you came in first place and you unlocked the track champion related to it. I bought Star Wars: Episode I - Racer today as well to update from my old PC copy that would take a while to configure properly with any current OS (it was bad enough setting it up on Windows XP at times) and it's a fantastic update with the higher resolutions and stability in optimisation. Great video again, Jon. And no way is Revenge of the Sith the worst of the Prequels. It's inconsistent in tone and there's some bizarre design choices that George Lucas made, but it's still better than Attack of the Clones. Yeah The Phantom Menace was my favourite Prequel film, which says a lot about my own taste.

At the very end of the game there is actually a track that is like the one in episode 1, the one you did at the beginning was just kinda for practice. Also, you can switch between various pods, you don't have to play as anakin only.

I think Jon doesn't know that there is a repair button and it doesn't repair automagically

I'd actually _really like_ a brand new podracing game. Not a big fan of racing games normally, but if you add in the ability to customize and upgrade it with both aesthetic and functional improvements, that would be awesome.

The race in the amateur circuit is not the "famous bit from the movie." It's the training course for it. That race is reserved as the final track in the game, and damn is it tricky.

You have to press a button to do repairs while racing. It fixes your engines but slows you down. This game was my jam back in the day! Also the pods they show after races we new racers you unlock to play as.

As soon as he gets to the galactic series. *Danger Galactic starts playing in my head.*

Every repair droid you own prevents 1 upgrade slot from being damaged in a race. Unprotected pieces have a random chance to be damaged a random amount the first time you finish a new race. Base parts never take damage. Any "bonus" droids you have (that aren't protecting parts from damage) will repair another part after a race. And as Pyro Gear mentioned, you can repair mid-race.

This is a lovely dose of nostalgia, I recall playing this game on pc with a giant joystick.

You probably remember Malastare because it is where Qui-Gon Jin says he saw podracing before, in tpm.

Man I remember this game I didn't even think I ever used the upgrade system

If you pull your brakes in after a jump like on the ice your air brake allows you to glide which is needed in later levels. Alongside that many courses have numerous shortcuts unmarked on the map that allow bypassing obstacles and such.

He doesn't know that when he gets a warning on the left side, it is because one of his engines is about to explode and he has to slow down and use the repair function.

Before even watching this, I will say the best bit of this game was that there was a button that all it did was make your character taunt, which considering everyone but Anakin speaks non- Galactic Basic, is mildly amusing.

There's pretty big rubber-banding in this game. A buddy of mine and I used to play this on N64 back in the day, and I would race around and try to set the course record, and he would wait until I was nearly finished and use the rubber band to try to set the single lap record.

The plot would probably have less dead if Anakin just stayed in the planet winning the Pod Championship Cups for the rest of his life... Nice driving Jon

The nostalgic is real and I have been finished every track in the game since I was young.

I remember being unaware of persistent damage for the longest time so my prefered racer ended up being fragile and every little bump in the road blew up my engine :P

I never owned this game; but I did get the demo off a CD in a magazine. It only included the Tatooine level, but I happily played it for hours and hours anyway, until I knew that track literally backwards and forwards. I do miss demo CDs.

We truly were spoiled for good games back then. Today it's hard to believe such an old racing game had such depth. Boost isn't just on a timer, you have to watch heat and part health. You have to upgrade your vehicle, with parts, and there's so many parts, and they all have condition, and you can find them in the junkyard... Is there a modern racing games that comes close to this or am I just having a nostalgia attack.

Was looking through my subscriptions earlier and saw that LGR made a video on this. Looked again so that I can click it and accidentally clicked this one. Was not disappointed.

They must have done a good job of this on lego star-wars too because I recognise the corners despite never having played the game! Minardi's that's an old-school F1 reference right there!

Oh the game that followed this, Racer Revenge. One of my favourite Star Wars games, I can't remember a character I *didn't* finish the tournament with.

If you're looking for more good Star Wars stuff, something closer to Rogue Squadron, check out the X-Wing series. My favorite is X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, but they all play similarly. You fly starfighters against your enemies in space, but to do it effectively you'll have to manage your power levels to recharge your shields, weapons, or keep your speed up, you can pair or separate your weapons as you like, set your shields to focus forward or back, etc. It's one of my favorite games of all time.

you know what the greatest podracing game is? Star Wars Racer Arcade. NOTHING beats having actual podracing controls. Second best? Star Wars Kinect. It's very close to the arcade feel, and is basically the ONLY podracing game that gives podracers individual sounds. You race for Watto (and impress him), become friends with Clegg Holdfast, and get Sebulba to come out of retirement to prove a point. Boonta Eve is the most accurate representation in any game (barring Arcade) and has variable difficulty. If you decide to attempt kinect controls (it's worth it for podracing) make sure you turn steering assist off and put podracer speed to "Lethal".

Obi-Wan cuts a man's arm off in a bar brawl. Jedi are not pacifists, and sometimes manipulators have to get their hands dirty.

btw inrace repair needs to be toggled on manually (R? look at controls, I don't remember exactly). Also you can pitch your nose up&down, helping with ramps and drops. Also-also strange pods appearing - are unlocks for new pods to your garage : )

Wasn't there a button to repair your pod on the fly? You know, the moment when Jon had all this red and warning stuff.

"grapevine gateway" is the second most technical track in the game, just getting it edged out by "abyss." for that track, id probably learn where the repair, brake and slide button are; some of those turns are better taken via drift. if you "arrow-down" you can use your boost more often. Speed isnt the most important until you get to the boonta even classic. Ive won every single track with a plug2 thruster coil.

Jon, you know there's a button to repair, right? Repairing is not automatic. And at the race start you can boost, but I forget the timing, it's like Mario Kart.

It's also worth noting that Sebulba sabotaged Anakin's podracer before the race started and that's why he stalled. And he wasn't the only one to stall out either 😏

Oh god when I was a kid a friend of mine had this and we sunk all our time into the 4 armed guy

As bad as the prequel trilogy was it showed us something very important. Yoda is faking the need for a cane. With the way he was jumping around and fighting, it's obvious he is faking his need to use the cane. Maybe he's doing it to get a good parking place in front of the Jedi Temple.

Jon plz Malastare is where the dugs come from, it was even in one of the clone wars episodes (probably one of my favourite episodes btw) and the green fume stuff you went over is most likely the toxic fuel that Malastare is known for

I hate the PT as much as anyone, but I always understood that the pod racers were so fast that they reached the limits of each species' reaction time. Anakin being force sensitive meant that he could react faster than others and theoretically fly a faster pod. Would that explain why his pod of faster? He's the only racer able to handle the greater speed with any chance of survival.
