The adventure continues in this "Star Wars" sequel. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) face attack by the Imperial forces and its AT-AT walkers on the ice planet Hoth. While Han and Leia escape in the Millennium Falcon, Luke travels to Dagobah in search of Yoda. Only with the Jedi master's help will Luke survive when the dark side of the Force beckons him into the ultimate duel with Darth Vader (David Prowse).

I wrote to Mr. Williams the following year (1981) and I praised his body of work but especially this score, which I still to this day sincerely believe to be his personal masterpiece and the single greatest motion picture score ever written and recorded. He wrote back, thanking me "for saying such nice things about my music." (It was on Boston Pops letterhead - he'd just recently become the conductor of the Pops Orchestra - and it had been dictated and signed personally by him.)

T. Martin Studios no lol, I’d die if they did that. I’m referring to Disney’s new versions of the Original Trilogy soundtracks from 2018. They’re missing so much music, not to mention horribly out of order as well. I wish George Lucas never sold the franchise.

3:20 - 5:21 is utterly spectacular. The most gorgeous rendition of the force theme, a very pissed off Vader motif, then those relentless swirling high strings increasing the tension scoring the rescue of Luke. Possibly my favourite bit of scoring from Williams in all Star Wars. Which was then completely butchered in the ESB Special Edition, seriously what were they thinking? Thank the maker for Harmy's Despecialized edition.

I'd prefer "borrowed" to be honest - nothing new there, it's all about context, and using those influences to create an exciting incidental score, as the director wants. That has been a thing for nearly a century. Williams excels at this, he'll tell you about his influences. Mussorgsky also had influences - where do we stop? :)

Deleted scene on the Falcon, Leia tries to explain the confrontation that caused Han to disappear. Luke says "Who's Boba Fett?" In all my years it never occurred to me Luke didn't know who Boba Fett was until basically the end of the movie

cjj - Have you seen the animated Boba Fett short from Holiday Special, though? It came out in 1979, and at the time that The Empire Strikes Back was released, the events that it depicted are considered canon. It is set between "Star Wars" and "Empire." In the short, Luke meets, momentarily works with, and then escapes Boba Fett - Boba Fett introduces himself, by name, to Luke.

Any time I hear it I think of the third mission in Shadows of the Empire, the mission I always called the "train mission". It was always one of missions when I would play the game, I still revisit that level on occasion when I'm feeling nostalgic.

@@eowynsalvador6664 In Canon, I don't know the exact reason why Vader didn't kill Admiral Piett for letting the Falcon escape from Bespin. Probably it was because Vader was too distracted over the fact that he failed to convince Luke to join him. However, in Legends, Piett was an imperial officer with great tactical skills with a very impressive and impeccable service record. He was handpicked by Vader to be part of his fleet. Knowing this fact, Vader decided not to kill him as that would mean that he would lose one of the best officers he had at his disposal. In fact, Piett became a living legend for being the "only survivor" of Vader's rage.

I always interpreted the scene as one part Vader being merciful and perhaps distracted with his failure of convincing Luke to join him, and the other part being realization the crew of the Millennium Falcon fixed the hyperdrive.

The deletion of that, along with the other incredibly UNNECESSARY edits to the entire escape from Bespin sequence, really still aggravate the hell out of me today. Did we really NEED to see Vader's shuttle taking him to his Star Destroyer? I don't think so - it was perfectly fine in the original theatrical edit. "Bring my shuttle" was sufficient. It got the point across in four syllables. The shuttle came, picked him up, he went back to his ship - it was all self-evident just in that one little 3-word line! All those establishing shots showing the shuttle flying away from Bespin, then landing in the bay and seeing Vader exit (all deleted alternate shots from Return of the Jedi, btw) - total waste of film, plus, it disrespects John Williams by chopping up one of his greatest compositions EVER!!! #ShaveGeorgeBaldAndPaintHisHeadRed

Well I think the new version is not so bad. The only thing I really don't like is the new version of the Imperial march in that moment where Vader originally said "bring my Shuttle". The original version (3:50) is quite better, and I think it would be really fine in the new scene of Vader walking toward his Shuttle with the Bespin sunset

1:30 Luke facing this choice between the abject terror of accepting the reality of his father as an instrument of great evil and risking near-certain death by falling miles and miles down that dark shaft. Always gives me chills. John Williams really captured the emotion of that terrible choice with those strings. Really evocative of the imagery of falling miles into a deep, dark void.

The absolute WORST sin of the Special Editions was breaking up the Falcon's escape scene in order to explain Vader returning to his ship. I can understand the logic, but the cost was the total destruction of the incredible beauty of 5:22 to 5:47. There was a very specific purpose and meaning to the moment at 5:42, where the Falcon reaches orbit and the audience sees it lit up by Bespin's star creating a diamond ring halo around the planet (symbolising hope). The flow and intention of this moment is ruined by interspersing Vader's scenes, and I impore younger viewers to watch the original cut in order to understand the Irvin's vision.

For some reason, 0:03 to 0:12 is completely quiet in the remastered version. They also replaced the bit at 3:50 with the same cue that played when Luke learned Vader was his father.

LooneyCynical Nah, it was used on Corellia, Tanaab, and Zonju IV. Ord Mantell uses either the Mos Eisley or Coruscant music. I don’t remember which.
