I love this ship. It's just so... Boring that it becomes interesting. It's not flashy, it's not threatening, but blast it, it gets the job done. It can be a Dropship, it can be a light carrier, it can be a patrol ship, it can be a transport... It's the little ship that could. It's just so endearing.
During WW2, the vehicles and weapons which saw action from 1939 to 1945 weren't the ones which were spellbindingly amazing; they were the ones which simply got the job done, and did so cheaply and reliably enough to justify their continued use. The British "Matilda II" tank is a good example of this. It was considered "very good" in 1939, and "good enough" by 1945. They saw service everywhere from Africa to Burma, and variants were made for many different roles. They were never "the best", but they were tried and true. This ship embodies that same mindset. It isn't amazing, and it isn't pretty. It won't turn heads, or blow people away. It can just about be relied upon to do what you want it to do, no matter what it is or where it might be. It can do a little of everything, and can be sent wherever at a moment's notice. They're reliable, and commanders love reliable ships. I love vehicles which occupy that niche. They're probably uncomfortable, cramped, and dirty to serve aboard... but their crews probably love them just the same.
Its also carried from the old republic era.. we can even see one in the phantom menace..it certainly seems weird that the Empire would resort to upgrade such classic and old design for their main assault /patrol tranport
@@Grymbaldknight So true while not from WWII, the 1954 built C-130 Hercules is still being used today and continues to save lives during humanitarian/disaster relief missions.
Yep, the Arquitens particularly have proven to bee very efective against the rebels. Kallus almost destroyed a bulk of the phoenix squadron with only three of those
The Tarkin Doctrine is the biggest derp in all of Star Wars. Peter Cushing created the scariest villain in the whole series and Legends writers decided to retcon the character into absurd incompetence.
Even in an animated show set in a universe where escape pods are designed to just crash into planets like meteorites and the passengers are fine, dropping an ATAT from like 30 feet in the air doesn't look survivable to me.
@@adamp3223 I know right? A light bump from an outdated AT-TE jolted the cockpit. If they're dropping from 30 feet those troopers hit the ceiling and are out cold.
One thing nice with SW Rebels is that it shows that the Empire has more than just *Insert Star Destroyer here* on every section of Imperial control space.
I admit that I like the ship too. It was useful for carrying fighters to and from the battle zone faster even with the Imperial Star Destroyers couldn’t. Very impressive
I believe the reliance on style is to hide the fact that their ships are cheap and mass produced because they don't mind throwing bodies at a problem in a typical authoritarian fashion.
@@dewdew80 also, fear factor, which initially worked very well as the few enemies they had lacked access to good quality capital ships and they just needed to scare and overkill them with turbo lasers. But that stopped when the Rebels got stronger and the destruction of Alderan pushed many to rebel rather than remain fearful
Surprised you didn't mention the variant with the giant sensor dish on top.Regardless, it's a little beast of a ship. Glad it's getting the attention it deserves!
If I'm not mistaken, the Gozanti was actually much, much older. Iirc, it was designed roughly 1000-800 BBY. It was also seen in rough shape on the backwater world known as "Tatooine" during the Naboo crisis.
the reason the gozanti avoided the chopping block is because it isn't gigantic and trying to do too much at once like a venerator also it serves as a much better dropship then any republic ship did
The poor venator only tried to do to much because the republic didn't make anything else to fill the role of a capital ship. It was a great carrier that would have worked wonders against the fighter heavy rebellion, and deserved better.
"the reason the gozanti avoided the chopping block is because it isn't gigantic and trying to do too much at once like a venerator also it serves as a much better dropship then any republic ship did" That and probably becuase apparently the villain of the novel a New Dawn managed to make the program to convert them to cruisers come under budget so the price tag got a knock down.
Had the empire focused on making ships and weapons that are practical rather than being intimidating they could've defeated the rebellion. O'Neill's comparison of the P90 and the staff weapon from SG1 sums up nicely why practicality is more important than intimidation factor.
If they weren't led by a megalomaniac like Palpatine, they probably could have. Even Tarkin seemed somewhat reasonable in the Clone Wars, but being in close proximity to Palpatine and Vader's dark side evil probably led to his idiotic fear doctrine.
Love this ship. It's like a Zeppelin with fighter planes slung behind the gondola. I always imagine that the pilots can get in and out of their TIEs through those docking pylons so they're not just hanging out in their fighters and using the Gozanti for immediate transportation somewhere, they're part of the crew. Would be the perfect ship to set very small-scale adventure stories in the Star Wars universe
I honestly love this design, it allows the Empire to send a gunboat without needing to risk or spend resources on a much larger ship. It's basic, maneuverable, and able to project power in places that might not be expected. If you had a few of these patrolling an area with a Star Destroyer a jump or two away they could easily disrupt most criminal or rebel operations.
I've always liked smaller ships, frigates and the like, and something about a small carrier like this is more than a little interesting. I can imagine them being deployed in squadrons of three for freighter escort, so they have a full 12-ship TIE wing, with the lead cruiser acting as flight control. Just wish they were slightly better armed.
Always liked this ship, I think it's cool how it broke with the Tarkin Doctrine, gives more depth and variety to the canon imperial navy. Nice video Daniel as always!
If nothing else Rebels really helped expand on the imperial navy. Between this and the light cruiser it was nice to see some support vessels for a change.
This was awesome! A really cool exception to the rule of the Empire's ship design. I'd love to see more 40k breakdowns, if you're interested in making them. I'm a huge fan of the universe, and they're really useful for introducing friends to the universe or explaining things, especially when running RPG's and the like. Maybe something on the Mars-class battlecruiser, or the ubiquitous Lunar-class cruiser?
I like that Rebels made use of this vessel well even with its limited role (Heck the book Thrawn even used the ship). It helped break up the use of needing an ISD in every part of the show to project Imperial strength.
I always imagined that the Gozanti was used for the same purpose as the IPV-1 (With the added benefit of carrying 4 Tie Fighters) and that in numbers was a very effective Planetary Defense Warship.
The Gozanti is one of my favorite ships of that size. It has a lot of great qualities that would make it ideal for mid-range and long-range patrol for military use as well as a great hero ship/home for a Star Wars adventure (whether it be a cast of a movie or show, or in an RPG).
I'd consider it more the LCAC (Landing Craft Air Cushion, or hovercraft) of the Empire. A transport vessel intended to ferry vehicles between the fleet and deployment zones. The Huey would be closer to the LAAT/i of the Republic or the U-Wing of the Rebellion.
@@lancer737 Do you mean the flimsy fighters or the Star Destroyers that only have anti-capital ship weapons and could be taken down by a ramming suicide fighter?
You read a lot. Still, Spacedock tends to look at the effects - and there I have to say, plotarmor or not, TIE's rarely win a fight against the rebels we see (again, biased bc. when they win it's just business as usual, a Rebel win is an outlier until ANH, supposedly, but still: that's what we see, canon).
Why not give it a few dozen Heavy Turbo Lasers...and some more hull plating.....and a bigger fighter wing with an hangar maybe...... oh wait, isn't that an Imperial Star Destroyer :P
@@_Teorias_ The Gr-75 transport when modified can have four twin linked laser turrets. The fact that ship has more weapons than the Gozanti is embarrassing for the Empire.
@@Marcus51090 I seem to remember a scene from a pre-Disney Legends book (don't remember which one) where the good guys knocked a bad guy out and put him "in the refresher". To me, that means the shower. I mean, you can't put somone in the toilet. But I think I've also read SW books where it definitely was a toilet.
I seem to remember from other critiques that SD hates the idea of ship design that too closely apes ocean-going vessels so be careful what you wish for.
Great video, one of my favorite designs. There are good shots of it in one or two clone wars episodes (Heroes on Both Sides) I'm surprised you didn't show them
I have to say, I really like the 'Feel' that the Gozanti had in the episode. It felt like a heavy lift aircraft rather than a ship. Which I think really suits its general size and roll.
I can see why Filoni decided to use a Gozanti in "The Mandalorian." They're small and capable craft, originally used for freight hauling (explains why an IR officer would carry weapons and supplies aboard), lightly-armed, and fast. Clearly not designed or intended for surgical strikes by Mandalorian warriors
I always thought the Arquitens, and other smaller hanger-less patrol craft should have a number of the retractable docking mounts on the bottoms to allow them to carry fighters, or in the case of the Arquitens, more fighters. Maybe not all of the ships of any specific class, but at least on sum, adding 6 on the Arquitens would result in it fielding three times as many fighters/bombers, which I’m sure would have been handy on many occasions
There I was thinking the raider class was the coolest imperial ship! This thing is like the Thunderbird 2 of the Star Wars universe. Not flashy, but doing a lot of work!
Make it more agile, faster, better living contditions, more cargo capacity, 1 missle launcher front facing and have better shields Keeping to what it was ment to be but improving on it in some ways
Add a anti-fighter concussion missile launcher, remove the heavy/medium laser cannons and replace them with a more comprehensive point defense grid with rapid firing light laser cannons in strategic positions.
I love seeing things from X Wing in vids like this. (I'm not sure if the Gozanti was originally conceived for X Wing or not, but that's where I recognize it from)
This is like the Star Wars version of the US Navy's DEs and the Royal Navy's corvettes in WWII. Doesn't get half the fame as carriers or battleships but just as important, maybe even more.
Probably my favorite SW ship, especially after seeing it portrayed in the Mandalorian. It just looks so good loaded with a squad of ties and it’s such a functional workhorse.
Makes you think if Imperial doctrine put more emphasis on speed, precision, maneuverability as thrawn suggested, the Gozanti Cruises would have been a very effective counter-insurgency asset. Its capabilities allow to perform a wide variety of roles, but of course that did not happen, that require palpatine to trust his commanders way more then he was willing to do. It's basically the Imperial counterpart of the CR90 corvette.
truely great backgroundmusic (: i like this kind of design, just can carry anything in the imperial arsenal giving this thing significant effectivenes in almost any invironment, if properly loaded with the right supplies. this might be the most realistic multiperpose ship-concept.
Throw a medium weight turbolaser on top, another chin mounted laser turret, and beef up the armor and you have a decent ship to ship corvette. Maybe replace one or two of the docking arms for some torpedo tubes.
I wonder if any of the Star Destroyers under Vader's command in the legendary Death Squadron that Vader's personal flagship the Super Star Destroyer Executor was the lead ship of had Gozanti class ships onboard or that larger model to deliver the At-At's to the surface of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back.
I was really bumping my head over what this ship is, since this is the only model I don´t know from Star Wars Rebellion Board Game, now that I know a bit more about it and the videos showing it on Rebels I like it more, but still prefer the imperial light cruiser...
It's the ubiquitous workhorse of the imperial military. Shuttles are cool, but they rely on carriers to be effective. Those Gozanti class just get the job done. Though I wish the Empire had more precise audits on the specific needs of each sector. Would have been cool if they then fielded an anti rebellious sector version. Thicker hull armour, better shields and additional point defence lasers would have done the trick.
It's actual canon that they did. General Veers ordered they use them. Usually they use Titan dropships but he wanted them to use something faster at Hoth.
It's also super slow as a design philosophy that it would be useless in pirate hands at lower speed ratings. It's even the ship that rescued Darth Vader from the first Death Star and the reason he took extra long to return with his report as the ship was taking an extra long amount of time to travel.
I honestly think that Imperial Gozanti's are way too lightly armed for a ship of that size. If it were up to me I'd move the laser cannons to the wings while adding two more turrets (one dorsal and one ventral turret per wing) and add a pair of either proton torpedo or concussion missile launchers close to the wing roots, that way the Gozanti becomes a hell of a lot more versatile.
Personally I think the VCX-100 freighter is much better than a Gozanti. We saw the ghost dock with 3 starfighters, 2 on the sides, and one under the ship, and with it's auxiliary starfighter it had the same amount of ships but much faster and more maneuverable, and could have torpedo launchers. As an armed freighter the Hammerhead corvette had a much better Cargo capacity to Cost ratio than even the C-Roc. However the Gozanti was the only one of these ships that could carry ground vehicles. This is the role I would use it in alongside LAAT carriers, which were more expensive and could only carry one ship but much faster and more manueverable.
It would seem to have the greatest usefulness as a dropship and also for fast repositioning of AT-DP, AT-ST, & AT-AT Walker vehicles on the planetary battlefields, than as a squadron-level TIE-carrier for interplanetary warfare.
This ship has a lot of history in its time in both the CIS and imperil Navys. Though I still preferer the legions version of this craft. As it is more armed and serves better as a mobile support craft in combat rather than a pratol craft.
Ah Gozanti, why do I love you so? You may not be as powerful or pretty as the Imperial Raider but you are the cozy little patrol craft I would prefer to serve on.
