9:21 - Shades
12:04 - Highlights
17:06 - Finishing Touches
Like the scenery? I show how to build it in this guide: • Scenery with Sorastro:...
Paints used:
Deck Tan (VMC)
Stormhost Silver
Ceramite White
German Uniform (VMC)
German Grey (VMC)
Leadbelcher
Nuln Oil
Black (VMC)
Typhus Corrosion
Rhinox Hide
Athonian Camoshade
Agrax Earthshade
Red Rust (Secret Weapon)
Orange Rust (Secret Weapon)
The Secret Weapon paints can be bought here with international shipping: goo.gl/4gkcxL
Also:
Brown Earth basing paste (Vallejo)
Testors Dullcote matte varnish
Fine Leaf Foliage by Woodland Scenics (Olive)
Javis Fine Turf (mostly the Mid Green colour, but also some of the Dark and the Light)
For an alternative to using the Secret Weapon rust paints, here's how you can mix something very close with Citadel colours: For Orange Rust you can use Skrag Brown mixed with a little Yriel Yellow, and for Red Rust you can use Rhinox Hide - either on its own or for a really close match you can mix in a little Wild Rider Red.
Bruses used for this video: Rosemary & Co Series 33 Size 2, and Series 56 Size 6.
Any palette will do but this is the main palette that I use: amzn.to/2wre2TS

I'm glad you mentioned how easy it is to knock over those tall shade bottles. I have done that an embarrassing number of times.

I started watching this series not because I like star wars but because I wondered if I might learn something from it. Not only am I learning, but I'm hooked and can't wait for the next episodes. I also want to go out and buy these figs to paint. You have cost me a lot of money :)

Your videos are amazing and quite inspiring. After watching this video a few times I purchased this kit online and built it while following this tutorial. While it didn't come out as spectacular as yours, I am quite happy with it. Thank You for taking the time and effort to make these videos. They are very much appreciated.

One thing I really like about your videos is your brush work. You touch on it in a different video, but painting toward the lightest spot has helped me immensely with highlighting.

I was working my way through the Zombicide: Black Plague tutorials, when the OSL from the lightsaber in the Luke Skywalker thumbnail dragged me away to this series. I am thoroughly enjoying the quality and effort that goes into your work and into your videos. I’m finding it very inspiring. Even minor production details, like the model going through the painting stages as you list the steps at the beginning of the video, that must take a lot of planning and work for a sequence that is only a few seconds long, and would be so easy to miss, but it adds real depth to the package. You have a very clear and coherent vision of how you want everything to look, both on the table, and on the tablet. Brilliant! And I haven’t even mentioned the music. It is without doubt the subtlest blending of visual and audio I have yet found on RU-vid, rather like your layering. I can hear riffs from the movie soundtracks in there, but they aren’t rip-offs, more stepping-off points that capture the atmosphere of the franchise. I was sure, after watching the first Luke tutorial, that you would recycle the same music for each subsequent video, but I believe each has been different. I could be wrong, my ear-drums are made of leather, but if I’m correct, then that implies a crazy level of dedication. Again, brilliant! And thank you.
@Sorastro

Thank you so much Peter! I really appreciate your taking the time to provide such kind and thorough feedback! Although I do actually recycle a fair bit of the music - once I've got enough for any given series - I still like to write something new for most episodes, depending on the mini.. :)

I've loved this series of tutorials so far, being all honest it's incredible how such a single change on the layers of dark or bright can make something so metallic looking. Thanks to these tutorials I've managed to do quite the amount of stuff with the Legions basic figures, and I mean... It's WAY better having a shaded Chiss than some plain tune blue, my Rebel alien strike team looks way better now.

Only found your channel maybe 3-4 weeks ago, but you've given me some good inspiration and since I've binge-watched nearly all of your video's in a couple of weeks I've learned a lot of new tips and techniques which I've previously given up on attempting, or were too worried about trying in-case I totally ruined a mini ... I bought some rosemary and co brushes as suggested in one of your videos, and even though I still love my GW and kolinsky brushes, I'm really impressed with the rosemary ones ... Love your videos, and thanks for giving me the motivation to get back to it :D ...

I have to say I have watched every video on your channel. I have found them so useful when painting, not only as guides but the techniques you use have helped me with so many minis. There is so much to learn and perfect but I have to say I appreciate your videos as they make it look so simple and makes me feel less over whelmed with planning when painting a model. The Black Plague tutorials have been so useful for painting zombies. Please continue making these videos they have made me far better painter. Anytime anyone asks me how I’ve done something I just tell them to watch sorastro. Most of my techniques have been adapted from these tutorials! Thank you so so much!

finally getting to this chic.. i dont like the pose.. and even if i did, i like the sense of weight.. so im doing what i did (although it came in more peices) with the AT-ST; cutting the hip joints down some, tilting the legs, cutting the ankle joints for the same thing, and even the "barrel" (that holds each leg) and tilting it as well. The end product has the longer leg (left) of the AT-RT acting as the dominant leg being stood on.. and the shorter leg (right), being that its curled, made to look as if its being lifted up, with its respective foot being dangled a bit.. Whats cool is, you could go for the opposite, and have the legs tilted outward - in a more planted look (kind of like when its turning in battlefront 2 :) I guess im going for a movie look, although ill have to re-watch the AT-RT scene again.. but whatever the case, i love dramatic poses ;)

I have no idea how you painted all of this in sub-assemblies and then all of it glued together perfectly. I have been dry-fitting these legs and feet for multiple days now and it never comes out correctly. The real video you should make is how you managed to accomplish that. :P Great painting video, regardless! You're a legend.

As always - BRILLIANT! I don't know what I'm more excited about - playing or painting! I had a few quick questions; you varnashed after the base materials, does that create any problems? I would think it would plastic coat the grass, thus sealing it - but is it less natural looking? And what glue are you using (putting model together)? I can't find a good brush on glue round here... Again, thanks for all that you do! Can't wait to see you hit the other vehicles!!!

These Sir are amazing! I've been watching your channel since you started doing the Imperial Assault minis, and I must say you really make me want to start painting again. I must ask though, since I haven't painted mini's in at least 15 years, and all my current paint pots are dried out. What would you recommend to the first time buyer, or someone getting back into the hobby to start out with? Paints have changed quite a bit in the last 15-20 years, and while it may sound like a good deal to go grab the Games-Workshop ultra paint bundle. It's rather hard to justify dropping $300 on paints right out of the gate. So, is there a set or colors you'd recommend to start with as a base to build on? Thanks again for making these videos! Keep up the great work Sir!
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 6 лет назад
Thank you Kevin! I usually suggest that people entering or re-entering the hobby just buy the individual paints required for a specific model or unit, then gradually expand your paint collection over time. So the real question is - what do you want to paint first? :)

Great video! What are the lines on the base used for? Firing arcs?? Also, have you considered trying to magnetize the swappable gun?
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 6 лет назад
Thanks Brian! Yes they are firing arcs :) And yes, I though about magnetising the guns but decided to keep things nice and simple (yet effective) with some good old poster putty instead. I'm sure all the modders will get to adding magnets in no time :)

Has always perfect vids and minis ! Keep going :). Little question, while you're refering to couple drop of Glaze to thin the paint, is't 1 portion of paint for 1 portion of Glaze ?? I haved try to thin with glaze because I like your wet blending technique. But I have difficulty to figure out the right quantity of glaze. Thx, :)
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 6 лет назад
Hi Bob! If you're referring to my adding Vallejo's Glaze Medium when I'm wet blending, then just a couple of drops will do, and maybe a drop or two of water. I couldn't give a precise ration though because it depends on how thick the paint is to begin with :)

Would it be all right if I used a ruler or something of the sort to mark the quadrants of the base and then painting? Never done this before, just seems like it would make the lines more defined

I wonder if anyone could help me, I've tried to do the highlighting/ zenith priming where I start with a black prime, then spray with grey and finalise with white. However with the grey and white stage the paint ends up being a little rough/ speckley. Is this because I didn't let each layer dry properly before spraying?
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 6 лет назад
Hi there! I think it could simply be that you're using spray can primers which tend to be a bit more speckley compared to using an airbrush. One small suggestion - you might like to try holding the can just a little closer to the model :)
@MrStainless001
@MrStainless001 6 лет назад
That is exactly what I'm using sir. I'll try holding it closer next time, strangely I hadn't held the spray closer in case it applied to heavily and drowned out the model, I'll definitely give it a try next time though.

I am getting more excited for Legion to come out and to get back into painting, thank you! I do have a quick question. I noticed you glued the legs, then glued the struts later. Do they only fit in one position? I also noticed that with the arm and the handlebar. Any time I have tried gluing separately, nothing lines up. Thanks for the great videos!
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 6 лет назад
Hi Elliot! The legs only fit in one position (which is why I glued them in first). The struts however are not so fixed in that if you were to glue the struts first, it would be pretty easy to get the angle wrong and then have problems when you glue on the legs :)

I've been watching your videos for a while and was just wondering how often you replace your brushes? I really like the Rosemary and Co Series 33 and try to take care of them (masters brush soap etc) but mine are starting to look a bit aged and in need of replacement.

Hi DTM! You'll usually see me using an airbrush for the priming stage but you could of course use one to apply the main base colours too if you like :)

Hi Sorastro, great work as always - a couple of questions though if you don't mind - Firstly I don't understand the point of the zenithal highlight - at 4min 30 for example you just paint over the entire thing in one colour, hiding all the highlight you put on with the spray at the start. Also, when I try to mix my paints with equal parts water (as you mentioned a lot in your videos), then paint it on, it just runs off, or collects in the edges, leaving an almost completely transparent colour on the surface, and I have to go back with a tissue, mop it up, and then add loads more paint to the mix to get it to stay on the surface. What am I doing wrong here? I'm following your guide exactly as you say but have either missed something, or you use a different type of water then me :) Thanks
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 6 лет назад
Hi! Yep the zenithal prime really isn't essential - as mentioned in the priming stage, a plain prime in black, white or grey would be fine. Regarding paint consistency - can I ask which colour it is that's behaving like that? It sounds like you're either over thinning the paint, in which as just add less water, or it could be that you need to give the bottle a more vigorous shake first. Also, for the base colours here I'm keeping the paint pretty thick (3:44) :)

Hi Sorastro. Thank you again for this great video. I have a question. Do you know any other good alternatives that works the same as the 2 secret weapon paints are you using in the video? (Red Rust and Orange Rust). Here in spain is not possible to buy those paints (online or offline), there are not shops or distributors that work with them and i suppose in other places of Europe will happen the same. On the other hand, in the future videos (AT-ST or other tech vehicles of Legion), could be possible to use other alternatives like citadel or vallejo paints for those weathering effects? (that are available worldwide). Thank you a lot.
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 6 лет назад
Hi there! For the Red Rust you could use something like Rhinox Hide and for the Orange Rust Skrag Brown would be a good match :)
@techreviews4639
@techreviews4639 6 лет назад
Thank you Sorastro. But those Secret Weapon paints are made for weathering effects, so i suppose they will not have the same pigment or density comparing with normal acrylic paints. Have you tried and compared them? On the other hand, are you planning to use more standard and available paints for weathering effects in your next tutorials? Thank you! PD: I do not see these paintings even on ebay, which is very estrange, it seems that they are not easy to buy.
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 6 лет назад
Hi! The Secret Weapon rust paints are still just acrylic paints, and although they have quite a high pigmentation and somewhat thin consistency, you will be able to achieve very similar results with the Citadel paints I suggested (which you can try for yourself on a spare mini). Incidentally, you could also order the Secret Weapon paints from elementgames.co.uk/ because they do ship internationally... :)
@techreviews4639
@techreviews4639 6 лет назад
Thank you Sorastro! On the other hand, have you tried Vallejo pigments? I think they are great for weathering effects (I think one of the best options at this moment). It could be great if you could use those pigments in your next Star Wars Legion videos (for example AT-ST) to show other techniques and other paints that are more available worldwide.
