I just got into Star Wars Legion which also happens to be my first miniature game. The paining process seems very daunting for someone as non-artistic as me. However, your videos are very educational and give me confidence. I'm hoping I can star paining in a few weeks once I have gathered all material. As a beginner I will probably just stop at the base colors. They look perfect for me at that point. Thank you again for these videos.
Thank you Armando! That's the nice thing about painting; you can take things as far as you like, and even a very basic paint job will add so much life to the minis :)
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WoF9mMkPJYM.html The Slap chop method is how I paint my warhammer minis. Not the best but they look nice
I will be following all your guides. I'm a new player as of 8/20/2022. I love the detail and for the cost of this game/hobby I feel that without this amount of detail I would be doing myself a disservice. Thankyou for the high quality videos and I hope that this game will bring me joy as much as it has brought to you.
Right?! It's up to 50 now! Who's sitting around watching this going, "Nope... I don't like this... and he needs to anonymously know of my dissatisfaction..."?
Thanks a lot! That feedback means a lot to me because I really wanted to make the process as easy as possible with minimum compromises to the finished result :)
I love that your technique constantly evolves when painting these stormtroopers. This video almost makes me want to redo my Imperial Assault troopers...almost.
I watched this video when it came out 2 years ago when i begain my journey into table top wargames. And i was looking up legion videos and decided to give it a watch again. I simply cant believe its been 2 years.
very cool to see this compared to your early imperial assault stormtrooper videos. It's great to see you progressing as an artist as you help everyone here watching on their own journeys.
This was a great video! Just getting into legion now and am so excited to finish building my stormtroopers tonight. Hopefully can have everything primed and ready to paint in full this weekend. Will definitely have your videos playing! Thank you!
I am a 100% noob to all things tabletop and miniature. Friend of mine got me into Legion and I was so beyond lost on where to start even with things like how to glue the minis together. He suggested your channel and oh my Odin is your content absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for your videos.
I have just recently ordered starwars legion and your videos have helped me get an understanding which colours to use. And the best techniques to paint the figures.
Some people will insist on, or feel financially limited to, using cheaper craft acrylics to paint miniatures. Let me stress that WHITE is one of the colors that you really need a quality, high pigment paint, designed for models, such as citadel, Vallejo, etc. If you try a cheap white, you may have a hard time getting the coverage and texture you need, and with it, you can make a mess of your models. Spend the money for the good paint, it makes the world of difference, and is critical for white...
Uncle Deadly I know this comment is ancient, but I'd like to absolutely stress the same with Yellow. Yellow in my opinion is sometimes even more important to get right than a nice, crisp white. There are plenty of cheap acyrilics out there which can fill many roles, however my ones I wouldn't trust at all and prefer to get proper ones when I have the avaliable cash.
Hi, I've just bought the core set of the star wars legions. I seen on the internet there is a core set of paints but its sold out everywhere. I've never done any painting before. Do you have a list of recommendations?
I've had better luck with a 50 cent bottle of walmart white than I ever had with Citadel whites. Citadel adds chalk to their whites and yellows and even thinned down, I've had the paint be chalky when layed down. I will sing the praises of folkarts white because it applies nice and smooth.
I fairly recently did about my fourth re-paint on a squad of stormtroopers and thought they looked pretty good. Set them on a shelf and went about my business. About 3 days later I stopped to look at them and thought to myself that they looked a lot like the thumbnail for this video. And at that point I was like... I can finally paint minis Seriously, your videos are very good. I appreciate how you mention how a lot of the steps passed Base coating is mostly optional and I always like having your videos on in the background while I'm doing my painting. So thank you, love the content
I think I prefer this shading technique to the one you used for the Imperial Assault Stormtroopers. Highlighting all the armor back up to white after the nuln oil wash was tedious given the sheer number of figures, but this "lining" technique seems like it will be much faster and appeal to my short attention span.
@@Sorastro Question on using spray can primers. I am using Army Painter White Primer, but when I use it, I don't get smooth, consistent coatings on my stormtroopers. Instead, I get a dusty type of coat that will rub off. Is this a distance or product issue?
@@jamesarnold9533 Hi James! It could be a bit of both; some primers are just more grainy than others. Spraying from too great a distance can also cause the effects you've described, so you might want to try getting a little closer :)
Also, I’m so excited for the next tutorial! Would you be interested in WWII 1/56 scale wargaming? Bolt Action is a pretty good game in my opinion, and the vehicles are mostly plastic model kits, and would you be interested in modeling as well? Great video and tutorial, this channel has really helped me improve my painting skills.
Sorastro's Painting Thanks for replying! I forgot to tell you that my real name really isn’t Jeff, but it’s Christian, this is an account I use for chatting purposes with my friends, because we have nicknames. If you remember a guy called Christian Briones commenting on another, older video of yours, than that is me.
When you get to the Bolt Action stuff, go for the plastic kits or metal figures, as most of their resin kits aren’t that good, except for the Maus, which actually looks pretty good.
Very good video. I am painting them a different way, using black as prime color, then dry bush gray and dry brush white. Finally, I am painting the details.
Really love your videos. They're so calming. I should get some citadel paints so i can get into miniature painting. The cheap paints don't work as good as citadel.
sprays cans tend to leave tiny globs on the figures(due to spraying too far from figures or dry conditions). I tend to stay away from them and use a brush or air brush. Great guide.
Hi Sorastro! Just popping in to say thank you for these really amazing Legion painting vids. I held off of painting my starter set for the longest time because I found the Stormtrooper's white armour waaaaay to intimidating. Thanks to you and your tutorials, I now have an almost 100% painted Imperial force! The only change that I made was to switch out the Mechanicus Standard Grey for Celestra Grey as I found that I preferred the subtler shadows that it provided. So thank you! :) Now I just have to build up the courage to tackle Vader and my fall to the dark side will be complete! XD
Dude, we finally purchased Legion at Adepticon, because it was not available. I can't wait to paint these, but this tutorial was another fantastic video. Love seeing how you paint these. Thanks for the info!
It's kind of fun to watch your different stormtrooper painting videos in order of publishing to see how your approach to painting them has changed. Looks like the wash is out and Zenithal priming and spot contrast is in now.
Hi! Yep - I always like to try new techniques and approaches out, and this just seemed like one of the easier approaches to achieving a quick, tabletop standard :)
Thanks for this tutorial! I see that your way of priming is so much better! I'm an amateur painter, so I just primed them with black. The painted end-result isn't that bad, but this method is so much better! I'm gonna try this on a squad.
Thanks Spoon NLD! There are so many ways to paint a mini and sometimes it's best to try a range of ideas to see what works for you. I hope your next squad turns out well :)
Sorastro's Painting Ive started on painting them by your way. Turning out bery nice indeed! Gonna give them a desert look though. Any tips on that? Wash with brown earth and drybrush with yellow sand? Or the other way around?
Excellent tutorial as usual! I really like it when the number of paints are kept to minimal! It's also nice to see you use VMC whites, blacks and greys more often. I find them easier to work with/control. Still, there are some citadel paints and shades one just needs to have!
Wish I've seen this video before painting my first stormtrooper with brush...I have all the tools mentioned here at my disposal, will try it tomorrow, hopefully the results will be at least as half as good as yours.
Tried both the IA method, and the Legion method. The IA method of priming white, adding detail and using nuln oil is so much more effective for beginners like me! Drawing on those eyes and mouth pieces without looking like moustaches and sunglasses is so hard, but it's a walk in the park with Nuln Oil getting into those recesses. They call it Liquid Talent for a reason!
Hi MrUzzynator! I'm glad you found my IA approach to painting Stormtroopers useful. I agree - throwing on some Nuln Oil is about as easy as painting gets; I just thought I'd present an alternative approach in the Legion video for painters who dislike the work involved in highlighting the armour back up to white after applying the shade, which I know some new painters struggle with. I feel the more options we have, the better :)
PLEASE go look at this guys other tutorials too. Even if you don’t have the particular game or mini, the techniques and theory are all worth your time. Also worth become a patreon if you can afford a couple of dollars
It looks like when you applied the white primer onto the grey primer it speckled a little bit, perhaps your paint in the airbrush wasn't thin enough or maybe that is just the nature of primer in an airbrush? I've also never been able to get a very good spray out of a rattle can that works well for a base coat. It's an interesting idea though and I'm excited to play around with it. Great video and awesome paint job!
Thanks a lot! If you're referring to 3:17 that's not white primer - it's white paint. The Model Air paints actually come pre-thinned ready for airbrushing but I do still add a couple of drops of air brush thinner :)
Patiently hoping for a clone painting guide and wondering which unit colors you will use, I painted mine as the phase I 212th Attack Battalion, the orange fits well with the glossy white armor imo.
Thank you! I actually finished my Clone Trooper video a while back, and I'm just waiting for it to pass licencing approval before I release it. (I also love the 212th look...) 😁
Good not to do the old wash over the white. I followed your IA storm trooper guide and basically lost the will to live.. This looks much better though I can't say I'm in a rush to paint any more Stormies now! Great vid as always, you always inspire me to pick up the brush.
I actually tried Next Level Paintings gloss varnish then army painter quickshade mixing medium combo with the last two and it didn't stain even half as much! Recommended!
Ha ha - thank you Juan! If I don't post for a while it's usually because I've finished a video that is stuck in an approval process that can take a few weeks (I finished this video 3 weeks ago!) and/or I'm producing PDF guides for my patrons over on Patreon :)
Hi Erik! It can be tricky for sure. If you can rest your wrists (and maybe elbows) to really stabilize your arms/hands whilst you work it helps a lot! I also like to use something small to mount the minis on too (stuck down with white tack).. 🙂
As someone who more so enjoys just playing then assembling/painting I was wondering if you could get away with just priming in the model's base color and then filling in spots with different colors? These models you paint are unbelievably well done, I do not want mine to look like they just came out of the box and snapped together, but at least presentable to some degree, great tutorial btw!
Thank you! Yep - at 9:40 in the video that's exactly where I've primed in white, and painted the dark portions of the figures, and they already look fine for gaming with. There's no need to add the dark lining or optional highlights to achieve a decent table-top standard :)
What are your thoughts on the new GW Contrast paints? I am wondering if spraying Stormtroopers (or the upcoming Clone Troopers) white and then using the white contrast would have a nice effect and make early stage painting even easier. Would love to see someone do something for Star Wars Legion with them.
Yeah, the more I see how "gray" Corax White is, the more I think I'll try some pure white for my basecoat. Especially if I'm using the Contrast Colors by Citadel.
