Star Wars Rebels: A Prophecy of Hope

Before The Bad Batch, and before even the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Dave Filoni and Lucasfilm Animation produced Star Wars Rebels, a 3D animated tv series depicting the origin story of the legendary Rebel Alliance, and the first major project of the Disney Lucasfilm era. Though Rebels began its production in 2013 on the heels of layoffs, budget cuts, an accelerated development period, and the delicate expectations of the Star Wars community, it would eventually inspire a new generation of fans, and leave a new etching in the legacy of George Lucas’s Star Wars mythology: a prophecy of hope. This is an analysis of that prophecy, and all the work that went into bringing it to life.

I was always so taken with the story between Kalus and Zeb. The shot where Kalus returns to the ship and it barely greeted by anyone, left alone in an empty room with only a faint glimmer of hope behind him really made me feel for him. I love his redemption arc. Really there is a lot of good stuff in Rebels, but people always complain that it isn’t as great as Clone Wars. I partially disagree. I think both shows are a love letter to both the fans and George. Especially in TCW since George did contribute all the story concepts and worked directly with Dave, often giving him several notes over the phone with how he wanted certain pieces of dialogue and other elements of TCW's episodes to be. S7 was his way of finishing what he and Lucas had started back in 2006 (beginning of production before completing S1 in '08). Plus, Dave always constantly credits the Maker whenever he's in a featurette talking about the making of episodes from TCW. Even in the S7 featurettes that they released, particularly in the Maul v. Ahsoka BTS video you can find on the official SW channel, Dave specifically mentioned how he was now finally able to finish TCW just based on the development of a few of George's notes back in the day.

I finished season 4 last night and still can't get over the scene of Hera in the cave blaming herself. Nobody talks about this segment for some reason, but it's one of the most human things we've seen in all of Star Wars. I see lot's of people talk about Ezra and his reaction to Kanan's death, but I feel like Hera was the one hit the hardest and this deserves more discussion.
@somewhereelse000

@@matthewjohnson2428 Hera's reaction was profound in its intensity. The scene in the cave was powerful, as was the scene where she asked Ezra if Kanaan was finally gone. The way she kept holding her shoulder where she had previously felt his touch was so evocative.
@matthewjohnson2428
@matthewjohnson2428 Год назад
@@somewhereelse000 for a kids show, both of those scenes kind of floored me with their maturity. Not in a way where the content deemed a higher rating, but the fact that it took time to show anguish and grieving in honest ways, realistic to how real people react. That scene outside the temple where Hera was holding her shoulder, whether it was Kanan comforting her through the Force or her imagination is irrelevant, creating physical contact with one's self and imagining it's someone they love is a very real human coping mechanism and it was good to see it portrayed as such. If I had one thing to say, it's that I don't feel a sense of completion with her character as she never really healed from her loss by the end of the show. Sure there's the epilogue, but I don't totally buy the idea of them having a son together considering she finally told him she loved him like a minute before his death. In a way I feel like we left Hera at her greatest high in accomplishment, but at her lowest low in loss and grief.

Kanan was a true Jedi. Aware of his own limitations, but always willing to try anyway. He recognized the importance of attachments and family, but knew when he needed to prioritize the greater good. The original Jedi doctrine was never about forsaking all attachments. It was about not letting them control you. That is why the Jedi order during the Clone Wars was doomed, they had become too dogmatic. The truest Jedi are those who accept attachments, but also know when to let go. Meanwhile "grey Jedi", those inbetween are those who do not fully believe in the light or dark side, but rather draw from both. Apathy from the selflessness and the selfishness, never dominated by either. Kanan/Caleb by the end of Rebels was a true Jedi, much like Obi-Wan. Both of them allowed connections into their lives, but knew when to let go and how to perservere on the light side until the very end. Both of them actually loved a woman, but didn't let it consume them. Both lost many close ones and fought evil, but never stooped to their enemies' level.

Rebels was a very important show for me, and Ezra was an important character. Ezra was the same age as I was when the show premiered. and as the show went forward, I realized very quickly after season 2 how I felt I was learning the same lessons as Ezra. I don't think I've identified with a character more than that before. The show's lessons and themes really resonated with me and genuinely contributed to my growth as a person. by the end of it, the parallels of my journey and Ezra's own journey through those years were evident and I am still so grateful to have grown up with a show that left that impact on me. To sort of paraphrase Ezra, this show taught me so much, not just about star wars and its mythos, but about family, hope, doing the right thing, and being a good person.

The biblical Caleb was one of the few Israelites who trusted in God when they were facing a seemingly unbeatable enemy(the Canaanites) and thus God allowed him to enter and help conquer Canaan when it was time. Exactly and it really makes you anticipate her eventual reemergence in 'Ahsoka' since that takes place AFTER the Mandalorian Purge so we more likely get to see her guilt over being the unintentional cause of her people's destruction. She and Ahsoka now both have something extremely painful that ties them together since one could assume that Ahsoka believed for a long time that if she hadn't left Anakin he wouldn't have become Vader and caused Order 66. It's going to be so interesting to see how she behaviours now afterwards and how it affected her, especially since we saw none of Clan Wren with Bo Katan making us wonder if Sabine's family survived and whether or not they could've taken refuge on Lothal with her afterwards to hide.

Best scene in all of Rebels imo is the Vader encounter at the beginning of Season 2. In terms of perspective, Ezra has no clue what Sith are and Kanan may have a vague idea of Sith as evil jedi, but Vader is suffocatingly powerful, far more powerful than any jedi he'd ever met. The two are strangled by his presence, the air feels cold and thick and they realize immediately that this foe is beyond them. Kanan was riding high off the fact that he killed the Inquisitor at this point but then Vader shows up to humble him and you can tell by the look on his face that there is an immeasurable difference in power between the foe he killed previously and the foe who is now standing before him. It does such a phenomenal job at making Vader a monster. Vader is only seen for the good he is by his own son, to everyone else he is a 2 meter tall monolith whose very presence forces his enemies to bow. We see the good in Vader from Luke's perspective, but from the perspective of an average runaway jedi, they don't see a good man, or even a man at all, they see a thing, a demon, death incarnate armed with a blade coming for them.

I viewed Thrawn as a hades villain: his collection of art in his office is an underworld of the souls of his opponents. His mechanical, tactical treatment strikes deals that no one but himself wins. And in the end, Ezra (after his journey with Canaan ends, renamed as one of the few who entered the promised land, Caleb) and after his ascension from the trinity father/son/daughter becomes the risen christ figure that breaks the gates of hades (the rise and destruction of the dome) from his office and the plot for Lothal to be free.

It hit every single one of my favourites in fiction and was a thoroughly entertaining, charming and deep piece of media I cannot recommend enough. Unlike with clone wars, I never found myself getting bored by arcs I wanted to skip and it was easier to connect with and concentrate on a smaller main group. Each and every one of the Ghost crew (Hera especially) has a special place in my heart forever. Rebels captured my interest and my heart and it deserves so much more love and admiration.

As a somewhat newer SW fan, I watched rebels as soon as I finished TCW, and to be honest, Rebels is just as amazing as Clone Wars in its storytelling. Sure it got off to a rusty start, and had big shoes to fill in the wake of TCW, but with time it grew as a show and had moments that were just as meaningful as those in Clone Wars. Dave Filoni and his team are singlehandedly keeping the mythology of Star Wars alive in the midst of the corporate restrictions and ideological differences imposed on them by Disney. When you think of Star Wars, or at least when I thought of Star Wars before I watched the series, two names automatically came to mind: George Lucas and John Williams. Now, there is a third, a name that I believe every Star Wars fan should hold with the same respect as the previous two: Dave Filoni. Thank you for this amazing documentary.

Rebels still to this day takes a beating from overly critical armchair expert fans. I grew up with the original trilogy, I watched the prequel trilogy, in between I read a lot of books. Many were good and even more really stunk! It was after that I let my Star Wars fandom die. It stayed dead for decades. The clone wars came out and I didn't even care. Obiwan this, Anakin that.. I just didn't care. What caught my attention was the commercials for this new series called Rebels. Fresh new characters never seen before that we can meet and get to know. I was with Rebels from day one. I didn't even go back and watch The Clone Wars until after the end of season 2, so I can learn all the backstories. But through it all I enjoyed Star Wars, it sparked imagination and inspiration. But it never touched my heart like Rebels did. The feeling of family between the characters and the bond that Kanan and Ezra share just spoke to me on a level that no other Star Wars project ever did. All the little nitpicky stuff that people complain about is simply nonsense. If they had even the slightest hint of what Rebels really stands for, the stupid space alladin and helicopter lightsaber issues wouldn't even come up. This video speaks to that perfectly! Bravo on a wonderful job! Rebels is my heart and soul over all other Star Wars. It was storytelling perfection for me. Oh and Chopper kind of reminds me of my cat too..

Stormtroopers being a joke and plot armor have been a thing in Star Wars since the originals, with deviations only coming from Rogue One and some Legends books. This isn't something Rebels started. You have done right by me, Good Sir. I liked “Rebels” better than “Clone Wars”. Your observations regarding “Rebels” are spot-on and well-reasoned. The true strength of “Rebels” was in the characters and their relationships. The writing was consistently good and, at times, truly excellent. “Twilight of the Apprentice”, “Jedi Night”, and “World Between Worlds” were my favorites, with “Twilight” being my favorite “Star Wars” of all (so far). I believe “Rebels” had everything pertinent to character development and writing that was so sorely lacking in the Sequel Trilogy. We had no connection to Rey because she “came out of nowhere”, and was anointed the new “hero” of Star Wars as fans watched in disbelief. “Rebels” managed to integrate Darth Vader, Thrawn, Obi-Wan, and other Prequel and OT characters seamlessly into the same series without diminishing them. And I believe Ezra, Ahsoka, and Thrawn will be the “way back” for Disney Star Wars to recover from the damage done by the fan-despised Sequel Trilogy. I was furious with the Sequel Trilogy for not utilizing the “Rebels” characters in any meaningful way. “Rebels” also TRULY creeped me out during “Rise of the Old Masters” when the mummified remains of Luminara Unduli were utilized to lure Kanan and Ezra into a trap. This plot element was VERY well-done.

Part of the reason I hold Rebels so close to my heart, is because it was the only animated series I’ve seen so far that I was with from beginning to end. Clone Wars started when I was like 5 and I only occasionally saw like 10 at most episodes, but only fully watched after season 6 (when it was presumed to have ended). Avatar the Last airbender ended when I was 5 as well and legends of korra I hadn’t heard of then, and only watched both less than a year ago. Adventure time I only discovered when it was in its 5th season and (for some reason I do not remember) I stopped near the start of the sixth. Gravity Falls id seem like 65% of (including the finale) but never got the full story. Rick and Marty is still going but I only started that like 2 months ago. Regular Show I dipped in and out of when it was coming out but didn’t know it had ended until a year or two after it did. It is nice that I’ve gotten up to date on all of those wonderful shows nowadays, but it still would’ve been cool to be there at the beginning, and sticking with it till the end. And I still haven’t seen Steven Universe yet! But yeah, Star Wars Rebels was the only one I somehow managed to be with the whole way and experience it, as it was happening. It was a big part of my early adolescence and (again) ill always be fond of it (not just for that reason, but it is a factor). Great video btw : )

In late 2018, Rebels is what made me truly fall in love with Star Wars all over again. I never really stopped completely caring about Star Wars, I watched all the movies, watched and of course loved the shows about it, especially The Clone Wars (also the 2003 series) read many of the books and comics, played and absolutely loved many of the games (KOTOR I, II and 2005 Battlefront 2 ftw). But by this time, with the new movies and the community of course being in flames at the time (still is) Star Wars was beginning to really weigh me down. I felt this disconnect with Star Wars despite me being so interested in it, but when in 2018 I finally got around to watching Rebels, it felt like I was transported back to being a kid again, I remembered just why this galaxy far far away means so much to me. As an added layer of meaning this show has to me, I am adopted. The decision to use the found family of the Ghost crew helped put my own life into perspective. It helped me get over my insecurities about being adopted and not being able to find my birth parents. Despite me being a 21 year old adult by this point, and already loving my adoptive parents and siblings, this helped me to appreciate them even more for choosing to love me, for sacrificing so much for a child that is not their own flesh and blood. From a purely critical and technical filmmaking (showmaking?) standpoint, Clone Wars is the superior show, but Rebels came at the perfect time for me, I'm not afraid to say that I love Rebels more than TCW even if TCW is certainly the better show.

The streets were empty, the models looked toy like, and the stories while competent were still serialized and nowhere near as mature. I fell off in the first season and didn't give the time to finish it until recently when I watched it all over again on Disney+. I was truly surprised with how much improvement was visible from season to season or even episode to episode. Themes could be explored, characters given time to breath and it all managed to bridge the gap between old and new. Both expanding on what came before while not invalidating it like the sequel trilogies did.

Its brave but also tragic since it almost feels like suicide by cop mixed with survivors guilt. Thankfully, his sacrifice became more than just that for him by the end. Another great moment was him overcoming The Grand Inquisitor. He mocks Kanan all season for being a coward, when it was his master's last order for him to run. Yet it was him who truly ran and abandoned his post as Jedi Guardian during the initial Jedi purge. The Grand Inquisitor continued to run until his cowardly end, never truly facing what he feared; Vader. while Kanan was the true Guardian of the Jedi order until the end.

It's pretty wild when you think about where this show started thematically and how batshit crazy the stakes were when it ended. The deep dive Rebels took into the nature of the Force still blows my mind to this day. Unrelated, but another thing that truly impressed me about the show was its sound design. Rebels wasn't afraid to forgo its score in favor of, say, the chilling whine of the Ghost's engines as it cruises through space, or the oh-so satisfying *thud* as a ship enter or exits hyperspace. So many moments really let the sound effects shine without adding music just for the sake of it, and that's pretty commendable. You can tell they really gave a damn with Rebels.

Watching the scene of AP-5 in space. I enjoyed it because it made me laugh but heard a lot of criticism about it. But after watching this video, I realised its significance now. AP-5 could have attempted to run away from the ghost crew and stayed floating in space happily without a care in the world. He could have stayed with things exactly as they were and be happy But he understood that he couldn't run away from his destiny and instead of screaming and kicking his way along. He accepts that his purpose is far greater than his own happiness. It also gives meaning to all droids in the saga of the fact that no matter how fleeting they are, they have as much of a destiny as living creatures

Rebels is my personal favourite star wars series, telling a convincing story of the Rebellion's early years and expanding the star wars mythology, all while keeping its wonderful characters at its heart. Along with the OT it's my favourite piece of storytelling in the franchise. This video really does it justice, so thank you :)

This is the show that made me fall in love with star wars and at first i couldn't understand why so many people hated it, things like the animation or the humor didn't bothered me at all, and i immediately fell in love with the characters, and following their story was a roller coaster of emotions, so far no other part of star wars media has got me this emotionally invested. So i guess i'm rewatching the show again.

This video is great. I grew up with the original series (I’m in my early 40s) and never watched Rebels or Clone Wars during their original runs. I suspect what your generation of Star Wars fans felt about Rebels is how my generation felt about the Prequels when they were first released. I finally caught up on all the animated series a few years ago and not only did Clone Wars and Rebels reignite my love for Star Wars, but Rebels became some of my favorite Star Wars stories ever, mostly due to how strong the myth storytelling is, the interaction with the force and animals (space druids!), and the character development. I love this crew so much. I even named my kitten after Sabine! Thank you for giving Rebels such a great tribute. I hope it inspires more people to give it a chance.

Fans ripped this show time and again during its run for many reasons. Not being "as dark as Clone Wars", or "it's too kiddy" or things like that. But that's honestly the reasons I enjoyed it. It was fun, it was light-hearted, and while plenty of other Star Wars stuff is good, few left me feeling as positive as Rebels did. It was a great show, and it deserved just as much love as the other lauded entries in the franchise 😊

i grew up watching rebels, and honestly, this video encompasses everything i saw in the show as a child, i am 19 years old, i have never let this show exit my mind, kanan and ezra have been my favorite star wars characters for so long, and for reasons i couldn’t always find the right words for. but you did, you found all the right words and nailed every point i’ve ever tried to make when arguing on the defense of rebels and it’s beauty. ezra IS the embodiment of hope, ezra is the reason the rebellion exists, ezra was “the spark that will light the fire that will burn down the empire” and kanan, kanan was the epitome of what a jedi should be, encompassing all those others who tried to be like he was, characteristics of all past jedi in him, qui gon, obi wan, anakin, ashoka, depa billalba , mace windu, and so many more. rebels imo is the epitome of star wars, all age of empire content is. those 19 years between the rise of the empire and the capture of princess leia which ignited a new hope’s story, are filled to the brim with beautiful stories of hope, there is so much more to fill in and so many more stories to tell and i can’t wait for the ashoka series to air and we get our continuation of rebels
