Did see it in theaters. I was more excited about this movie than I was for The Force Awakens. The fact that Rogue One is a direct prequel to the classic original movie had me pumped. It didn’t disappoint.

I was also more excited by Rogue One vs Force Awakens. I thought StormTroopers were done after Return of the Jedi and to find out we are still doing that was bizarre so many years after Return of the Jedi. It makes sense in The Mandalorian but Force Awakens seemed like a few steps backwards to everything set up in the end of Return of the Jedi.

Yes! The trailer had Jyn running on the beach area with the data cassette, and Krennic walking through shallow water with his cape in a very cinematic scene. Plus there was Jyn facing off with a TIE fighter at the alignment controls; which, seemed like it could have been a fake out. The voice over questioning how far would you go while showing Jyn in the Imperial outfit made me feel like we might have lost a lot of gritty Jyn as a spy/double agent/saboteur, or some morally ambiguous plot (shifted to Cassian?). The CGI for the faces of Leia and Grand Moff are still a little off-putting, but the rest of it I loved. The fact that you didn’t catch on to Peter Cushing was a vindication for the effects artists, I think. It’s a little wonky, but I’m not sure I would have caught on if I didn’t know he was dead. I absolutely hate the Grand Moff Tarkin CG Peter Cushing. They should have kept that character in the background. The Leia CG wasn't nearly as bad. I do love this movie, though, despite that terrible decision. And I am surprised Shanelle didn't notice something was off regarding his appearance. It was some of the lousiest CG I've seen.
@NankitaBR
@NankitaBR 2 года назад
When I watched this movie I was told that one of the "human" characters was CG, but I didn't know who so it took me a few scenes to figure it out. If I wasn't expecting it I'm not sure I would have caught it at all, I would just have thought the weird moments were just post-production going a bit bad or something, if I saw anything at all.
@Nope2022HugeTheWarningFan
@Nope2022HugeTheWarningFan 2 года назад
@@NankitaBR My eyes are really good at catching CGI. It has what some called "the uncanny valley" look. It doesn't look like it is actually with the filmed actors and sets. George Lucas didn't understand why people like myself didn't like the CG Yoda. It's rendering was flat. It had to weight. It was like a video game character being introduced into the real world very superfluously. Did you see Shin Godzilla? Now that is how to make a CGI character. Though there are some instances in that movie when Godzilla is bathed in fire that doesn't look right. But for the most part, I thought it was a real on set effect. Now, I'm not going to claim I haven't fallen for other CGI effects thinking they're real. Some times they are made very convincingly. Yoda and Grand Moff Tarkin weren't in my eyes.
@jlilley73
@jlilley73 2 года назад
@@Nope2022HugeTheWarningFan I've watched several reactors watch Rogue One now and it seemed like none of them caught on to the fact that Cushing's character was CGI. That's probably helped by the fact that many of them don't remember Tarkin from Ep 4. On the other hand, everyone notices that Leia looks "weird", but then again she's a character that everyone's familiar with, and so they instantly catch on that she must be CGI because of Fisher's age.

People get very temperamental about this one. It often doesn’t get the love I think it deserves. The story needs to honor the idea that these people were going in on a suicide mission, and it makes you care about the characters within a single film in a way that episodes 7-9 failed in an entire trilogy. This one is top 3 for me, with only episode 3 and episode 5 being better films. I love the pacing, the cinematography, and the Darth Vader and Leah appearances tie things up in a nice little bow.

One of my favorite sequences is when the rebels ambush the stormtrooper convoy on Jedha with civilians caught in the crossfire. Very intentionally designed to evoke modern day wars, but with the "good guys" taking on the role of the insurgents. It paints a more complex picture of the rebellion than any of the mainline movies dare to. It really is the only "war" film of the Star Wars saga with regards to how it depicts warfare in general, but at the same time maintains enough of that Star Wars adventure (and almost heist movie energy) throughout to fit in. Love Rogue One.
@rainerbloedsinn182
@rainerbloedsinn182 2 года назад
Also the fact that Cassian murders his informant at the start of the movie. In the episodes you always see the shining heroes of the rebellion, here you see that, though their goal is a good one, their methods quite often aren't. As in real life the difference between a noble rebel and a terrorist depends on your (certain) point of view.

Saw was the first time a character that originated entirely from one of the recent animated TV shows made the transition to live action. His character first appeared in Clone Wars, and has appeared in Rebels and Bad Batch as well. (Not counting Boba Feet who first appeared in the Holiday Special animated segment) The animated show running at the time was Rebels, and the movie contains a few nods to that show. A droid who's a main character of the series appears in a crowd scene in Yavin (thanks to the fact that they'd commissioned someone to build a real-life version of the droid to promote the series), another character is name-dropped on the PA system, and the hero ship of Rebels appears in the battle at the end. The hammerhead cruisers also first appeared in Rebels, though their design was a nod to a similar design in the game, Knights of the Old Republic (which is no longer canon).

If you to have that same feeling of “War”, you could find it in “The Clone Wars” animated TV show (even though it might be a bit slow at the beginning). It has also a very serious tone about the complexity of war etc… that being said, if you watch it, i suggest you to choose the chronological and not the release order :)

The reason people enjoyed Rogue One so much is because it IS a war film. It's showing us everything the Rebellion has been doing in it's fight with the Empire, instead of being a background afterthought to the Skywalker drama :P It skillfully tied the events of A New Hope into this film, and made one feel as if they were in the Star Wars universe even without Jedis and lightsabers and all of that. We need more films like this. Also: The Jedi friend that Mon Mothma asks Bail Organa to find and have him join the fight is none other than Obi-Wan Kenobi. Bail explains that while he cannot go personally, he will send someone to find him, "I trust her with my life". That is, of course, Leia. A corvette is the smallest class of rated warship, with frigates being the next class up, followed by destroyers. The US Navy no longer operates corvettes or frigates, preferring to use destroyers, cruisers, and carriers as its main fleet loadout.

Interesting that you early on described the format as a spy movie. That’s literally the movie. Rebel spies steal the Death Star plans. It’s sort of James Bond meets Star Wars, which is ironic given Daniel Craig getting an unseen cameo in one of the Star Wars movies you haven’t yet seen.

One thing I love about this movie is the attention to details. For example, at 26:20 you can hear two stormtroopers chatting about the T-15 being marked obsolete. That's a call back from ANH : In the scene where Knenobi disable the Death Star's tractor beam, we see two other stormtroopers chatting about the T-16. Although we don't know what T-15 and T-16 are, that is the kind of easter eggs only hardcore starwars fan would notice and that shows you how much Gareth Edwards love for the franchise, how much attention to details and how much love for the fans he put in this movie.

I was SO worried when we heard about all the reshoots. I think the movie suffers a little bit as a result, with Saw Guerrera's inclusion seeming almost pointless and Jyn's flip to then from then back to Rebel sympathies giving me whiplash, especially at the rebel HQ. Altogether though, it's easily one of the best Star Wars movies (beating every prequel and Force Awakens IMO) and gave me very high hopes for Last Jedi... which were promptly squashed

I love K2SO's deadpan humor in this. He seems like the anti C-3PO. I was disappointed he dies a hero's death, but I also understood that the main characters of this movie die at the end so there are no loose ends or plot holes leading into New Hope.

Absolutely like a classic war movie. Very well executed. My only minor gripe about this one was they did reshoots with major changes which meant most of the scenes in the trailer got tossed, which was really distracting the first time I saw it, waiting for scenes that never happened. But wow what a fun addition to the SW Universe. Best space battle IMO.

"Death Troopers" huh? Hadn't heard that name before. When The Mandalorian featured its Dark Troopers I had looked that up to refresh myself on what they were because I knew I'd heard that name before, and the summary from their appearances throughout various original canon (or "legends" if you prefer) is that the earliest versions of them were partially cybernetic soldiers. Humans given a few mechanical upgrades to improve their combat efficiency. (I think the tech is related to the process that gave Vader his cybernetic limbs (plus his life support system) as well?) But over time their Imperial masters saw the human element in them as a weakness / liability and sought to make them more and more mechanical until eventually they were just skipping the organic components entirely and making pure droids. The Mandalorian's Dark Troopers apparently took inspiration from that end result in the original canon. They're just 100% droid. No question about it. But I get the impression skimming through a bit about Death Troopers that their place in the Disney canon is more in line with the human side of the original canon's Dark Troopers, when they were an elite special forces unit. Although maybe less reliant on the cybernetics.
@borbafet9206

@@MuljoStpho actually i would say the new shadow troopers are just disneys interpretation of what were earlier known as shadow troopers. elite stortroopers dressed in all black armor. altough shadow troopers wore just all black stormtrooper armor these new death troopers have a unique armor design. you are right about the old dark troopers. in the old canon, pre disney aka "the legends" as they are now called dark troopers first appeared in a 90s video game star wars the dark forces. there the dark trooper phase 1 is just a moderately sized skinny droid armed with a batton and a shield. a some sort of crude test version only appearing in one level. phase 2 is a big droid and kind of a tank and the most common of the group. phase 3 dark trooper is a massive tank like droid that could also be worn as a giant exosuit armor. later, however n the 2004 battlefront game the phase 0 was added to the mix which were now suopposed to have been the origins of the dark trooper project. these were the only dark troopers pre disney that were cybord, part machine part man as a weird fringe project to try to bring some folk back to fighting shape though it backfired and it didnt end well for the test subjects. as you mentioned these utilized the same procedures that were used in darth vaders suit. these peoples limbs and organs etc over half of their physical being were replaced with machinery and since this was often done against their will most could not cope with it anded their own lives. now in the disney canon we did see some kind of dark troopers and it was mentioned that this is the first version without a human element but we dont really know what the previous version entailed exactly

The very ending shot with Darth Vader watching Tantive IV take off really changes the entire dynamic of the first scene between Leia and Vader in A New Hope. The hatred for Kathleen kennedy, and Disney was all you could read about online. legions of fans started talking about protesting all Star Wars content until Kennedy was removed from her position, before Rogue One even came out fans complained about it. As a fan of movies and the Star Wars universe that wanted to keep an open mind and accept what we were given and try to find the things we did like about the films, you couldn't enjoy talking to other fans about them. Chances are you would get a very hostile or bitter response. Its nice that finally all this time later, new fans are enjoying them and reacting the way many of us wished the other half of the fan base did. These are great films, maybe not what we expected or always wanted, but still great! Its a shame so many fans didn't see this and other newer star war films, they are missing out.

Some more cool trivia: The story concept is from John Knoll.. He is a long-time visual effects guy at ILM, and he also co-created the paint software "Photoshop" Princess Leia was not the only CG actor... Grand Moff Tarkin (Peter Cushing) from SW Episode 4 was also digital. Peter Cushing had a small role in "Top Secret!" (excellent comedy). They made a plaster cast of his head for prosthetic makeup for his Top Secret character. This plaster cast was found decades later and scanned into the computer to help create the digital Tarkin for Rogue One. Guy Henry from Harry Potter provided the voice and facial performance capture for digital Tarkin. K2SO was voiced by Alan Tudyk.. The blonde pilot from Serenity. He also voiced King Candy in Wreck-It Ralph.

They're all to aware in writing and pacing that we know generally how the movie ends. But instead of dealing with the forgone conclusion that they will steal and deliver the plans no matter what by slowing down and developing the characters, they're violently propelled from action to action with no real actual or natural progression in relationships. Jyn goes from yelling at Cassian to quoting him passionately and Cassian goes from cold blooded killer to organizing a suicide squad for her because he chose not to kill the one person he was specifically ordered to kill, which was her father. And he had good reasons for not killing him, I'm sure Bor gullet was used, despite him making people go crazy, to learn the truth. Yet nothing comes of that truth gathering scene. When the X-Wings attacked Jyn's fathers position, we're told that they can't be called off because they're already committed. Nonsense. No shots were fired yet, and there's apparently instantaneous two way interstellar communications in Star Wars and with that squadron, so there's plenty of time to call them off. Even if there wasn't, there's nothing to prevent one of the X-Wings from hovering over the pad for a few seconds and sweeping the pad clear of enemies while his squad mates covered him. The end battle scenes went from "Cool visuals, I guess," to, "Seriously?" The inclusion of Red and Gold Leaders, obviously limited to what they could cull from cut angles meaning the almost the same exact lines from A New Hope was jarring. Then there's the out of place Mos Eisley jerks somehow being on Jedha, being jerks on Jedha because they have to cram some random cameo in the movie, just for them to leave Jedha immediately after being jerks and going straight to Tattoine, without freaking out over almost being killed by the Death Star. Pretty much everyone died in an explosion immediately after serving their one purpose in the movie, which was to flip a switch. And some of those switches were outside and exposed to the elements for no reason. And the antenna was out of alignment for no reason, and somehow transmitted to everyone yet just the rebel flagship, which had Leia's ship in it for some reason. And let's not forget that C-3PO and R2-D2 were in the Yavin hangar when everyone left yet on Leia's ship when it got boarded not much longer later. Also, the battle scenes was ridiculous. The rebels had the element of surprise, yet they didn't immediately start shooting everything on sight upon exiting lightspeed. There was no general plan and at most minimal coordination. Orders were given sporadically, instead of rapid fire. There was no shooting between the capital ships and minimal firing from the capital ships. There was no bombing or bombardment of the Imperial structure surrounding the shield opening. There were no squadrons of fighters firing volleys of torpedoes, just random fighters almost casually flying about and shooting at the occasional target. There were a total of 3 star destroyers in orbit around Scarif and yet not one deployed any troops to reinforce the surface. Instead, they just let the surface fend for itself and eventually Tarkin destroyed the Empire's own base, despite only some rebels being on the surface and despite the rebels already getting the plans. And fuck the rest of the data stored there, right? That's not important anymore for some reason. Vader's scene at the end was supposed to be orgasmicilly amazing, yet it's a let down. He dramatically took his time and turned off his life support and almost casually walked down the hall killing fools, instead of being mister badass sith and using the Force to brush everyone to the side and at least trying to Force grab the plans or using the Force to at least try stopping Leia's ship. Then he's standing in the vacuum of space like his suit is rated for that.

He just didn't flat out name drop him. Tarkin's actor Peter Cushing has long since passed away (RIP.) The character's appearance was physically portrayed by Guy Henry while having Cushing's face placed over him via CGI.
