Isn’t it weird that Carrie Fisher is the only living character left (from Han, Leia, and Luke) despite being the only dead actor.

Would it not have been dope as fuck if Rey joined Kylo, and for the rest of the series it’s about the Rebellion with Fin and Po vs The First Order with Rey and Kylo.

I personally felt that the mystery of Rey’s parentage was more of a means to put you in her perspective rather than her parents actually being prominent figures. Even she seems disappointed at the revelation because who wants to believe that they were sold and abandoned? Now that she has finally confronted the issue, Rey can move forward in her self discovery.

Think about the original trilogy. Palpatine was set up as a mystery dark ominous figure. We got nothing from him and was murdered by Darth Vader. Only years later in the Prequels did we get a complete back story. Why do we need to know who Snoke was when the story is about Kylo and Rey.

I think most of you prequel kids either don't realize or have forgotten how much people hated The Empire Strikes Back when it first came out. The reviews were mediocre at best, and the adult audience generally agreed that it "didn't feel like Star Wars," and had a twist ("I am your father") that was there just for shock value. Kids ignored all that and loved it with their fucking hearts. I know because I was one of them (my stepdad took me out of school and to the first matinee at Mann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, the next morning after the premiere.) ESB is not the classic high point of the Star Wars saga because of the adults who went to see it, or the critics who wrote about it in their newspaper columns...it is the greatest Star Wars film because a new generation of young film goers heard Yoda say that "luminous beings are we...not this crude matter," and our minds were fucking blown. Right now, no matter what your hard ass grown up heart thinks of The Last Jedi, I guarantee that some little girl or boy out there is seeing the world completely differently because of this movie, and that is the whole god damned point of Star Wars. When the first one came out, I sat in the theater at the age of 6, and heard Obi-Wan tell Luke to ignore his targeting computer and just use the Force. In that moment I said to myself, "The Force is real!" Decades later, when JJ Abrams had Han Solo look right in the camera and say, "It's real...all of it," I practically cried tears of joy while my own 7 year old son sat next to me. Everyone who thinks that this new trilogy "ruined their childhoods" needs to get a grip on themselves, and then jump off a fucking bridge.

Who is to say that they did not lie to Rey. And they do know who her parents were and it is very significant...... they are evil, u really think they wouldn't lie to her?

I think the real problem with the film is all the RU-vid driven hype, theorizing and nit-picking. There is no way a film can live up to any of our expectations when we all spend so much time deconstructing it before it even comes out. Also, all the mystery of Rey's parents and what Snoke was all about wasn't actually set up in The Force Awakens, we just did that to ourselves. Search your feelings, you know this to be true.

Finn was probably the best Stormtrooper the first order ever trained, the Before the Awakening novel has a sequence of him in the weapons training beating literally everyone with multiple different weapons. Even Phasma is impressed with him.

She didn't SAVE the animals, she abandoned them. In the wild. They'll be caught and tortured for escaping, or they'll slowly starve. Animals abandoned out in the wild ARENT being saved from anything, they die slow and scared, alone in a hostile loveless world. It's FAR worse than putting an animal down.

Was I the only one who felt this movie was hope crushing? Nothing seemed to matter and the movie SPOILER ends with children who are beaten by mean people, still beaten by mean people. The broom kid looks up into the sky and grips his ring but he’s gonna go back into the building and get beaten again. 40ish people left in the rebellion? Dude hope died. Just me? The emperors new clothes are stunning? Okay

There’s even an interview with Daisy Ridley and the interviewer asks Daisy will they reveal who she is when the last Jedi comes out... and Daisy plainly looked to the person next to her and says they already did lol And the interviewer is like oh wow I gotta see that movie again lol 😂

That the movie looks pretty is no excuse or a reason for it not being bad. It is the least thing when you have a bottomless budget.

What stands out to me in this discussion is how much you guys explain how or why certain things have happened in the movie. Like Yoda striking with lightning because it is supposedly a force strong place. Don't get me wrong, this is no critique on you guys, I love doing it as well. But the fact that for this movie you're trying to find explanations for so many things shows how poor it's put together. I liked the first showing. I only had some minor gripes with it back then. But after watching so many discussion/analysations/critique videos, there's really no looking past the flaws in storytelling. This is beside the whole point whether it fits in the Star Wars canon or not. As a self-contained story, it just falls short on many things.

I feel all members of the panel loving the film overall wasn't an objective analysis.

The Rose & Finn subplot aswell as the Admiral Holdo plot were unforgivable and you guys should feel bad. The subplot had no pay off. Benicio's character had no purpose other than bringing Phasma and Finn together so they could duke it out which wasn't very exciting. "Uhh noo but they were being tracked", then make that shit because of a double agent or whatever. Litterally any character could have done Holdo's kamikaze and save us from the lamest mutiny drama. Fuck Finn, Rose and Holdo, more Rey, Hux and Kylo.

What made no sense, is why would the bombers still go after the Dreadnaught - were they not still under orders from Leia? Did Leia just tell them off-screen, "Well, since Poe is defying my *orders* - you might as well too" - makes no sense at all. At least we got 'Rogue One' Star Wars Best to worst in order - curious to see how others would rate them... I caught the foot drag and the fact that Luke looked younger. Like he dyed his hair and beard and got a haircut before leaving... 1. Empire 2. Star Wars 3. Rogue One 4. ROTJ 5. The Last Jedi 6 The Force Awakens 7. Revenge of the Sith 8. Clones 9. Solo 10. That other one I can't even mention... the Phantom Jar Jar.

With George Lucas saying Luke is super powerful and all the God-tier Luke EU material, the epic lead in with Luke standing down the first order and tanking the AT-AT Fire was a let down when it turned out to be a farce. I think either have Luke do a huge display of power AND THEN die, or have him do the projection thing but stay alive

54:41, I'm sure that others have mentioned it before, but DJ overheard Finn and Poe talking about Holdo fueling up the shuttles to leave the big ship. This happened when they were in hyperspace, right before getting to Snoke's ship. The camera even focuses on DJ's face for a few seconds. All that DJ told the FIrst Order was to scan for shuttles leaving the cruiser. They they just followed the shuttles to Crait.

This movie for sure was setting up for Ben Solo’s redemption arc. What Rose said to Finn is so relevant to the next movie: “That’s how we’re gonna win. Not fighting what we hate, but by saving what we love.” Kylo and Rey are endgame like it’s literally canon that they saw that they would be by each other’s side in the future. Rey and Kylo are going to be the ones that strike the balance between light and dark. It’s also canon that their force bond began in TFA when Kylo was interrogating her. I think Johnson or JJ confirmed this in an interview. I think Kylo went ape shit when Rey tried to take the lightsaber and left him cause he believed that Snoke really did bridge their minds, and Rey’s actions seemed to confirm that for him. But that last force bond scene proved that that wasn’t true and that Ben feels like he made the wrong decision. That’s why we see him kneeling all sad, but he’s also in the light which foreshadows how he’ll find his way back to being Ben Solo. This movie played with a lot of light and shadows and ying and yang which I really liked. Reylo is endgame y’all and I’ll be pissed if they kill Ben Solo before he’s redeemed. He started his redemption by killing Snoke aka his abuser aka the asshole who’s been trying to control Ben’s mind since he was really young.

great review guys, you all came away with a similar viewpoint as i did and allowed for appreciation of the movie as it was, not a criticism of the movie for not being how you wanted it to be as many reviews have seem to have done. also, for me, i think the best part of the film was the cinematography, as rian johnson films have always had..i actually enjoyed the canto bight part, i like the aspect that not every plan works out and a bumch of energy and time is often spent for what turns out to be nothing at all, which is how life works... and at that it wasn't even useless, they freed those horse things and inspired the slave kids, so it shows that while even though the main plan may be for nothing, everything we do, at all times has effects and consequences, good and bad... also, poe not being told is how military works, he just got knocked back in rank he needed to be humbled, not being told the plan was part of his humbling....i am really interested to see what the internal conflict between kylo and hux will be in ep 9, because the first order is essentially hux's and you know he has to be scheming behind kylo's back, that could be an interesting dynamic... anyway, good show.

I feel like in a few years, people will like this movie more when they're over the salt of being wrong about the theories of Rey's parents and Snoke being a nobody and appreciate the story for what it is. Also because you'll be able to watch the films back to back and there's no 2 year build up where people constantly theorize and unfairly build the film up in their own head only to be disappointed.

I am a bit frustrated by people going on about Rey’s parents. There was no ‘teasing’ that her parents were someone big. Her parents, or the lack of them, were what shaped her personality. They were her reason for staying on Jakku but she needed to accept that they were gone for good.

That light-dark side war would be literally the best way to possibly end this trilogy that'd be fucking incredibly sick

Poe told fin and rose on a walkie talkies type thing while DJ(?) Was opening the door to the tracker. He overheard their convo about it cuz Poe was like "they're evacuating everybody, you gotta hurry"

I think maybe Luke just didn't have access to a mirror for a very long time so he projected his image the way he remembered himself.

Finn's Plot armour is so strong not even the Night King's Ice Lance could penetrate it :( the bullshit of those two scenes, never mind SuperLeia and the Love crash (which she couldn't physically have caught up with him from her starting position), absolutely ruined this film. Worse than that it cheapens a lot of the previous film. Do not give this guy another Star Wars film again.

My personal pet theory is that the cave showed Rey her true parents. She is like Anakin, a child of the force, a reflection of it.

Rey's real name is Aegon Targaryen

Snoke astral projected Rey and Kylo across the same distance without breaking a sweat. Kylo said that the effort to do that would kill Rey if she were doing it and it did kill Luke. Snoke was definitely more powerful than Luke.

When I first saw it I was deeply divided, somewhere between a C- and an A I said to my friends. After discussing some plot points, sleeping on it, seeing it again, I think I'm pretty settled on an A-. The Canto-side stuff is just not good, and a serious flaw in the movie, and much of the humor is not appropriate for the scenes (a problem in TFA I thought as well) but there's just so much strength in the movie as well. The A-plot of Rey-Kylo-Luke is just so damn strong I have to say it is a good movie, and a good Star Wars specifically, even with a lot of problem areas.

Why does everyone assume that Kylo was telling the truth about her parents? He could easily be lying just to manipulate her to join him

I'm curious about how much Disney keeps pointing to the balance. They are slapping us in the face with it, even the Jedi logo in the cave is a Ying Yang symbol. Think about what Anakin's prophecy was, to bring balance to the force. When he was being raised there was thousands of Jedi and two Siths. At the end of episode III there are two Siths and two Jedi remaning, prophecy fulfilled. Even Snoke states that a power rose to challenge Kylo. When are they going to figure out if they keep raising more allies to their side that it will continue the wars. Is it possible for someone to master staying in the middle of Jedi and Sith and never be challenged?

They did the story better in the Eternal Empire game. The emperor in that gets stabbed in the back by his apprentice within 5 minutes of the first encounter and you're like "wait, thats it?" but then at key moments he stops time and then his ghost offers to help you obviously with the intent to posses your body. Imagine Rey is about to be sliced and then time stops with Snoke offering Rey his powers. Or even if Rey took over the first order. With the naivety that she'd be a good dictator. Or wanting revenge on an unjust galaxy.

I think the reveal of her parents being nobody was to bring her to the dark because she wouldn't have a tie to the light

My theory is that DJ I'd the one they actually came for, but lost his lapel pin in a bet. They were never given a name of who to look for and the guy shooting craps didn't really fit the profile.

I really liked it. I rewatched the force awakens and actually what Maz Kanada said to Rey backs up what the revelation in the last Jedi. I also think that is the audience having that expectation that Rey must have an important family connection worked well in terms of how she was so sure of that herself. We feel how she feels. Also Luke basically became yoda.

These new Star Wars is missing a critical component: bounty hunters

I was pretty disappointed by this movie. The movie looked great and I enjoyed seeing all the new creatures and planets; as well as, the ships and cinematography. My biggest complaints were with the plot and character of the movie. Smoke felt completely useless, I was really hoping for a new actual Sith Lord but instead we get a antagonist that dies with like 5 minutes of screen time. Leia’s random force pull through space just made me mad. The whole side story with Finn and rose was complete garbage. Rose was super annoying, I actually laughed when she kamazazed into Finn near the end, the look on her face was just too much. The greatest parts were Luke, Rey and Kylo. I always like learning more about the Jedi and the past. Rey’s parents were also a huge let down. I’d rate (4.5/10)

Captain Phasma should have ripped her damaged helmet off and fight another round with her face showing rather than just dying after we see her eyes.

Snoke wasn’t ever meant to be a primary character. You see this clearly in TFA. His death is not dissatisfying because it wasn’t about him. It’s ballsy to kill a villain, and to further push another “on the fence” character to be the main antagonist. I’m willing to bet the third film will take place years in the future (for Leia and Rey/Ren’s arc). Maybe have Rey and Kylo vie for the remaining Knights of Ren..? Also, I have NO issue with moments of social commentary.

BB 8 stealing an AT-ST was total bullshit also those weird horse-cat things running up a 90 degree 100 foot cliff was fucking dumb as well. Finn tries to kill himself to save the resistance and gets stopped only to somehow carry Rose across the entire battlefield without getting shot once?

I think its clear rian johnson focused on rey, kylo, and luke way mire than anyone else which was good and bad for me mostly good. After this movie im SO invested in rey and kylos relationship now i dont think theres romance there but its something deeper, the way kylo begged her to join him wasnt just the typical bad guy speech to the hero it felt so much deeper. They almost have a magneto/prof x relationship now. When rey closes the door on him at the end you can tell it hurt her but she made her choice and so did he, and the way adam driver acted in that scene hes so good

So when Rose saved Finn did anyone else see the GoT scene when Bronn saved Jaime? Also it would have been more impactful for Rose to have died... it would have cemented her anti-war message to Finn and avoided the possible love triangle between Rose, Finn, and Rey in the Episode IX. No one wants to waste anymore time with needless storylines.

Did anyone else think that the First Order might have been tracking the supposedly encrypted beacon, and would follow Finn (or perhaps find Rey with Luke) instead of following the fleet?

The Rey & Ren coop fight reminded me of the time when Obi Wan and Ventress teamed up against Maul and Savage in the clone wars.

Has anyone ever thought that when Rey asked the dark side to show her her parents and she saw herself imply that she doesnt have parents? Same as what kylo ren said that her parents were “nobody” maybe it means that she doesnt really have parents. Maybe she was born by the force and was found by junkies who took her in???

I still think Rey is the reincarnation of Anakin. Anakin s mother was nobody and so are Rey’s parents.

About Rey's parentage why didn't you guys think of Kylo and Rey as siblings, am I the only one, the one !! 1. When Luke reconnects with force, Lia immediately connects with him. So it can be siblings connection 2. After snoke dead they are still connected. 3. In force awakens Kylo feels the awakening when Rey gets involved in the plot (with resistance) Orrr JJ Abrams set it up well and Rian f'ed up, or a dumb misdirect for the grand reveal she is nobody. And how does Kyle know she is nobody anyway?!

What if Snoke used the same force ability as Luke? Projecting a slightly more youthful self (when compared to the Snoke in TFA) in order to manipulate kylo, furthering his transfer to the dark side?

Don't you think Leia and Holdo needed Poe to have a plan to distract the First Order from their escape? I think they would have looked further if they had just got to them so easily after a two day chase without attempting anything.

Finn should have jumped out of his ship while letting it crash into the weapon without him.

I'll be ok with Snoke being killed off if they have his backstory be important in IX because I'm totally ok with Kylo Ren being the ultimate villain
