Welcome to our first time watching Star Wars: Episode 1 The Phantom Menace (1999).
Let's see what the new generation thinks. For science. Thank you for watching.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace is a 1999 American science fiction film written and directed by George Lucas. It stars Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd, Ahmed Best, Ian McDiarmid, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Pernilla August, and Frank Oz. It is the fourth film in the Star Wars film series, the first film of the prequel trilogy and the first chronological chapter of the "Skywalker Saga". Set 32 years before the original trilogy (13 years before the formation of the Galactic Empire), during the era of the Galactic Republic, the plot follows Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi as they try to protect Queen Padmé Amidala of Naboo in hopes of securing a peaceful end to an interplanetary trade dispute. Joined by Anakin Skywalker-a young slave with unusually strong natural powers of the Force-they simultaneously contend with the mysterious return of the Sith. The film was produced by Lucasfilm and distributed by 20th Century Fox.

Welcome to our reaction to Phantom Menace. We were nervous about publishing this as it's a little bit of a divisive film. On reflection we think that giving it a viewing from two separate generations may actually piece together the audience for this film. We are frank and honest so we hope you enjoy.

You should know that I was 8 years old when I saw this in theaters. I watched this movie at least 80 times in the first year I got it on video because I loved it so much. I practiced the light saber routine with my brother and memorized all the moves. As an adult I see all the pitfalls now, but I still can't shake my nostalgic love for this film.

I remember actually falling asleep in the theater during the trade negotiation talk stuff. I was about 20 years old. I wanted to love it so much because there was so much build up, but it just wasn't a good movie. It had many good sequences though. I've softened over the years and can watch it and be entertained. I just have to reframe it as truly an episode and not a movie that can stand on it's own.

Also, to address your earlier talk with us as the audience, I know a lot of people were disappointed, but, as a Star Wars fan myself, I’ve also noticed in the past maybe 10 years, this mood has changed. People are now starting to embrace them. For example, Hayden Christiansen had gotten a lot of hate after these three films. Then at the convention, he was given a standing ovation, and he was very overwhelmed. The same was true for Ahmed Best. Jar Jar. He was literally given death threats. And now, especially since he got a new role in one of the Star Wars series, he’s been embraced. I don’t know if everybody loves the character that he played, but people have given him respect. If you’ve ever watched any of his videos, he’s actually talked about that he was at such a dark time. He even contemplated suicide. Because he was that hated. So now to see people, love him, it’s an awesome turnaround. Jake Lloyd also had that experience, playing young Anakin. I know he’s been going through a lot of mental health issues, and I don’t know if any of that even had to do with the harassment that he was given. But I have seen a turnaround. People are really starting to enjoy it. I think series like the clone wars have also played into that. With that said, I don’t know if it’s going to be the same with the sequel trilogy, which is also not well received. But I think that was for a different reason, because that was not planned. Before they started shooting the first movie, they should’ve had a blueprint of what they wanted to happen for the trilogy. They didn’t. And one Director tried to overturn another director with the story and it was just chaos. There was no planning and they should’ve had a plan before they shot one scene. Anyways, very glad to watch this. Excited for your son to journey more into the Star Wars universe.

I think it’s good to have this discussion isn’t it. I totally agree with the sequels in that they didn’t have the whole trilogy planned. Last Jedi is actually not that bad except for the vibe where we can feel the ‘brief ‘which is to turn around every expectation of the previous film !
@NetanelWorthy
@NetanelWorthy 27 дней назад
My biggest problem with the sequel trilogy, outside of not having a plan before they even started it, was the fact that if you look at Star Wars prophecy, in my opinion, Rey is now the Chosen One. Because Anakin didn’t kill the emperor, because they cloned him. So there was another emperor to deal with and getting rid of the evil, and essentially the Sith, was what Rey did. That’s why it was so critical for Darth Vader to be the one to take out the emperor in Return of the Jedi. And all of that was destroyed. Hopefully, even if it’s not on the channel, your son and yourself have the opportunity to watch some of the live action series. Because some of these are very good.

for me, these films, the prequel trilogy, aged quite well. aside from jar, which was honestly most peoples chief complaint when the first one came out, ive grown to love these more and more over the years. i admit, episode 1 is the weakest of the primary 6 films, but in general, it did what it set out to do, which was 1., to introduce anakin as a child and establish how he entered the jedi life under obi wan, and 2., set in motion the beginning of the empire. also, it has perhaps the single best light saber duel of the whole franchise. episodes 2 and 3 were a bit dull to me as a mid 20 year old, but as ive gotten older, i really enjoy the subtlety of manipulation and the politics of it all. i couldnt say the prequels are better films than 4, 5 and 6,.. but i find myself watching them more often than the original trilogy and i consider them to be actual star wars films, vs 7, 8 and 9...which were pure 💩

Great reaction. Your son is very intelligent, the way he pointed out the comedic relief of this movie and the original trilogy was smart. He understands movie structure and the reasons behind certain characters. I think this movie gets too much hate, I understand that the older generation didn't connect with this first-time round, but I think there is a lot of redeeming qualities. I had a similar experience with 2006 Superman movie with Brandon Routh. I was so excited for it, and I was so disappointed in it compared to the Chris Reeves movies. It took me watching the movies 4 times in theatres to enjoy the movie for what it was and to not compare it to the old movies. Expectation can really kill the joy of a movie. I hope you continue with these movies, and they do get better.

In this episode Anakin is nine years old and Padme is fourteen. I was an adult when the original trilogy came out so I don't have a nostalgic view of it. I find it interesting that those who were young then didn't like the prequels and folks who were young during the prequels like them and don't like the sequels. I think nostalgia for when the viewer was young plays a big part of that. Personally I have favorites in all three and my personal favorite episode is Revenge Of The Sith.

Loved this. I’m glad your son enjoyed it. I was 8 when this came out, and my dad surprised me with the VHS for my birthday later on. My sister and I played it literally every day, and when the following movies came out, my dad and I went to see them in the theater, just the two of us. You don’t notice the writing, dialogue, or acting when you’re young, lol. I’m grateful to have had that kind of classic experience with them and have that memory. I still laugh at my sister’s shock when, about a year or so ago, I told her about Jar Jar being a hated character. He just works with kids, I guess. The look of absolute horror on the dad as the humour found it's audience. I felt a great disturbance in The Force...as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. The disappointment after a 16 year wait and all the hype leading up to TPM... At least you spared your son that. You should take him to see the prequels on the big screen in September (25th Anniversary of TPM!!!). I watched The Terminator at the cinema this week on Judgement Day (along with T2) and that was a real treat.

I'd like to focus on the positive elements of this film: Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor (who I took notice for the first time in "Trainspotting") were perfectly cast. Before seeing the reaction, I am kind of more interested to see what Dad thinks about Phantom Menace seeing it now, versus his obvious negative opinion having watched years ago when it came out. I am curious whether Dad has seen Phantom Menace at all since that one time when it came out? I expect that the younger generation here will enjoy the movie, but will find things to criticize due to him becoming an experienced movie watcher. Edit: Dad definitely seemed to like Phantom Menace better this time around than his description of what he thought about it 25 years ago...and he said that he enjoyed it and it made him want to watch the next one. His criticisms seemed pretty reasonable, the CGI graphics and backgrounds do have a different feel from the original real sets and practical effects, and Lucas was trying to tell several stories...but Dad also saw things in the film this time that made him think less badly about the things he critiqued. I definitely think we can put Dad into the category of Star Wars fans that in retrospect really like Phantom Menace better now than when it originally came out. 😁 I was a bit surprised to see that Son actually seemed to like the movie more than Dad, or at least was less critical than I thought he would be...but it was definitely nice to see that he actually like JarJar, since the character gets too much crap thrown at him in general. The Clone Wars animated series does help improve the movies and are worth watching too, as well as the other animated Star Wars content. I plan to introduce the entire prequel and original trilogy to my fiancee. I had low-key told her Star Wars is a romance story (among many other genres). I also told her The Matrix Trilogy was a love story and she really enjoyed it. I never fully watched Episode I but as I rewatch it with y'all, I notice the many phrases said to Anakin throughout are similar moral characters I would aspire to teach my kid(s) someday. He's a bright lad and I would like to see him pick up on it on his own. 46:35 Kid's got the right idea here... Now, he should look at falling into a pit 51:44 (because of the Force reminding him), try it for real (55:55), imbalance removed (56:34), and getting out (57:09) to see his intuition is confirmed in the film. He should also look at all the Jar Jar mouthing what other people say (deliberate computer animation), either now, or after the (not really) retcon in Eps. III, and look more closely at how Qui-Gon speaks to the "handmaiden", teasing her, like "Oh, but you're not the Queen, Queen Amidala, you're just a handmaiden, you said, so eff you!" And I liked the kid proving that George had sold Darth Jar Jar as intended, in spite of your "adult" scepticism. Grew up with the prequels and prefer them to the OG films. I find the original trilogy to be kind of slow and boring, and the whole concept of "the underdog fights the evil system" has been done to death. It was probably more fresh back when the OG films came out, but I was not around back then so I can't say. I think what the prequels did really well is the "cool stuff" - lightsaber duels, droids, starships, the CGI environments. Gave everything a feeling of being more alive, as a universe. Dialog was not great at times in the prequels, but then I think of old Ben Kenobi vs Vader on the 1st Death Star and shrug.... the OG film series also has flaws that the people who grew up with them didn't really notice. Following Anakin was also more interesting than Luke, in my opinion. Honorary mention to the Clone Wars series, this REALLY fixed a lot of the stuff people didn't like or understand about the prequel era. The prequel era is just also more interesting, imo. I know it is based on the American Civil war to some extent, while the OG era is more "WW2-if-the-space-Nazis-won" kind of thing. I can't really put my finger on it, but having the Republic split in 2 and see how 1 man manipulated it all from start to finish, is just way more interesting to me than "small band of Rebels, who are also terrorists, with plot armor beats huge empire because they are the good guys". So yeah, shoot me :)

In 1999, Lucas couldn't tell me that movies were for children. In 1983 we already knew that there would be three episodes before and three after. I spent all that time up until 1999 waiting for those movies and they literally skipped my adolescence. We watched the original trilogy a lot of times because it was all the Star Wars we had (the comics, novels and others counted). Thanks to the dialogues in the original trilogy we knew very well how those first three episodes should develop, with very specific details. But George Lucas ignored many of those details or forced them into situations that had to be taken with a grain of salt. Anakin should have been older and not tried to justify being a great pilot with podracing. And Macgregor's Obi Wan is NOT Alec Guinnes' Obi Wan. In fact, it's actually as if they split Guinness' Obi Wan into two characters: Obi Wan and Qui Gon. Qui Gon is the one who really has the idealistic part that Luke's uncle feared would drag him down like it did his father. The prequels simply failed in a lot of things. Not to mention that Lucas wasn't exactly the best director either and he would have done well to delegate to other directors. They are better than the sequels (the third trilogy) but... they are not up to par with the original trilogy.

Everything happens either cause it's been done to her or because some decision she made. and she was iconic and brilliant at it. but of course having to introduce everyone again in a different light takes focus away. EP2 is better, but still meh. But EP3 is an incredible movie, and perhaps on a rewatch even Dad will agree! Your boy’s reactions are improving massively, getting much more confident sharing his opinions. Nice to see. Rogue One was a good movie, telling the story of how the rebels got the Death Star plans and why it had the cooling shaft flaw. Regarding the "prequels" #1 is a fun story, but definitely more "kid-friendly" with Anakin being a little pre-teen boy. #2 and #3 are just ok action movies in the Star Wars setting. The sequels (#7, 8, and 9) are a hot mess, except for the admiral sacrificing herself and showing what kind of damage a deliberate hyperspace jump through an enemy fleet can cause. *edit* Yes, your boy is the intended demographic for Phantom Menace. If I'm not mistaken, he's about the same age as Anakin in this movie (about 11)

I always liked Phantom Menace. It's not a perfect movie; it suffers from dialogue and character focus issues, and taking Maul out at the end badly hurt the potential for suspense and character growth throughout the trilogy, but overall I liked the story, and I LOVED the worldbuilding. I'm glad you went out of your way to ensure your own opinions didn't influence your kid as you watched together.

For me I rate the prequels in this order. Attack of the Clones #3, Phantom M #2, Revenge of the Sith #1. Yes, please react to the next 2 films. Would like to see your son’s perspective on both of them. I guess JarJar was a good character for kids. But I agree they cast too young an actor to play Anikan. He should have been older in this one, so the next 2 don’t seem so odd with the romance that’s coming.

Great reaction! I've grown to like these prequels a bit more than I initially did, but I really don't think they can compete with the old ones (IV - VI). There is nostalgia of course, but the writing in the old movies was better, the story flowed better. These prequels, I think, try to show and explain a bit too much, ending up with too many moving parts. Like you said, there's not even a clear main character. These three movies are of course a story of Anakin Skywalker, and the latter two finally get to that. Apart from the historical background of how everything leads to the downfall of the republic, you could basically skip this first prequel movie and not miss much about the story of Anakin. P.S. Cool Elite t-shirt, now I have Blue Danube (the docking music) playing in my head :)

1. Of the prequels I like this one the best, mostly for the POD race and the underwater sequences, 2. Jar Jar is mostly comic relief since we don't have C3PO 3. Liam Neeson was very busy with various productions at the time and was in huge demand and agreed to do this episode because Qui-Gon Jinn dies, and he won't be held to do more. 4. Divine conception😇 5. It's easy to know why this one didn't start the series because of the lack of CGI back in 1977.

@@williamjones6031 exactly. I’ve always wondered about doing a video essay on the first film and how the relationship between Obi Wan, Luke and his father was conceived very differently and how Vader being the father was an Empire Strikes Back script creation. The story of Obi Wan having a friend who was killed by Vadar, goes into hiding to watch over his friend’s son (Luke) is actually quite interesting. George Lucas missed a trick here with the prequels by playing them out as he did, he missed out on another potential plot twist regarding Vadar and Luke and Vadar being wrong

Great reactions you two....I personally enjoy the original trilogy (4-5-6) and I enjoy the prequel trilogy (1-2-3) when George Lucas was heavily involved with those Star Wars movies...the Disney trilogy (7-8-9) not so much....but I thought 'Rogue One' & 'Solo' were ok though....Also as an added bonus you should also show your son the two spin-off Ewok, made-for-TV, movies ('Caravan Of Courage' & 'The Battle For Endor'), Gegore Lucas was involved with those films & those films take place after 'Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi' (however they were more fantasy based than sci-fi based - like 'Harry Potter', 'Lord Of The Rings'/'The Hobbit'). I did enjoy those two Ewok movies when I was a little kid and saw them on the telly. 📺 Some of the Star Wars TV shows are a mixed bag (some are good and others are terrible). The Clone Wars animated series is best in my own opinion though. 🫤 Also 'Willow' is a fun fantasy George Lucas produced movie (which has Warwick Davis who played Wicket the Ewok from 'Return Of The Jedi' & the 'Ewoks' movies). 🧙 Also I hope you'll both react to the other Indiana Jones films as well. 🤠

26:47 George Lucas loves motor sports. One of his student movie "1:42.08" is basically a car race. There's a whole nice and cool autojet chase at the end of THX-1138. And cars are quite a big part of American Graffiti.

I was 19 when The Phantom Menace came out in theaters in France. I really liked it (except maybe the emphasis on political elements and the abuse of digital effects that made some scenes "fake"), but I was mostly disappointed that my friends were disappointed lol. For me, it was an excellent movie, and it was exciting to wonder how this adorable little boy was going to sink into darkness. Jar Jar Binks is annoying, but for me, he was secondary, not a big deal. Concerning midichlorians, intense debate after the movie that night 25 years ago lol. Some felt that it was a betrayal of the "spiritual" nature of the Force. Others thought on the contrary that it was interesting to have a "biological" approach to the Force. Even today, I imagine that the debate is not settled 😄
@GenerationMediaReaction
@GenerationMediaReaction 28 дней назад
In Empire Strikes Back, the teachings of Yoda make The Force out to be something that can be connected with through peace, calm, not anger, hate etc. A connection that one can 'choose' to make. So this connects with growing up as actual resonance. The conception of midichlorians is in danger of discarding this as 'being born' or 'not born' with it.
@clauderain312
@clauderain312 27 дней назад
This is largely my opinion as well. That said, even the original trilogy introduces the idea that some are more sensitive to the Force than others ("The Force runs strong in my family"). But indeed, I always understood it as "I have a special affinity with the Force, but everyone feels it". And I share your idea that the concept of midichlorians breaks a little the egalitarian concept of the Force (everywhere, all the time, for all beings, and some can draw on it consciously and actively). Speaking of the Force, I found your son's reaction to Anakin's immense potential very interesting. “Evil” is the word he chose. Of course he knows Anakin will become Vader. But I also had the impression that he had an immediate understanding of "This much power in one person is not necessarily good."

I love you guys, another SUPER REVIEW. In regards to reviews for this movie, I remember the press releases on audience remarks after previews. Most were bad and specifically some addressed "racial" stereotypes. The voices used for "evil" trade reps were very "Asian"; the shrewed business creature that owned Anakin and his mother had a Yiddish accent; Jar-Jar Bing and his tribe displayed Afro-American ghetto stereo-types. Plus the "immaculate conception" of Anakins mother and the "chosen one" did not sit well with evangelical Christians. Except for CGI, I personally didn't care for StarWars I~3? Especially the casting of the adult Anakin...
