Kicking off several weeks of PHANTOM MENACE related content with Lesley Stahl's interview with George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and others, prior to the release of EPISODE I.
This in-depth profile of Lucas offers comments from Steven Spielberg, Ben Burtt, recording session footage of John Williams at work, and an excellent overall glimpse into the excitement that surrounded THE PHANTOM MENACE's release. It's also a superb profile of Lucas, right down to his anti-Hollywood stance -- which is hugely ironic today considering STAR WARS became everything he hated about Hollywood after he sold it to the Walt Disney Company!

Really good insight into Lucas as a person in this. Just crazy to think how much technical expertise goes into making these movies, but it can all be for nothing if people don't like the story or characters. The technical achievement can't be understated though. The digital backlot was a pretty radical advancement at the time that gradually became the norm in Hollywood. I always think of 300, Sin City and Sky Captain which all came out around the same time and were almost totally blue screen movies. They picked up the ball from the prequels, and now it's become a completely normal, common way of making a movie.

George made 6 movies and made 6 billion dollars. Can I have that job please?

Incredible amount of irony, and yes some sadness, hearing Lucas rail off about modern day Hollywood starting at 10:30. How he describes corporate studio filmmaking and focus group testing is sadly everything that STAR WARS would become after he sold it all to Disney. Just amazing really.

Like That Cyndi Lauper Song. Money Changes Everything. Some parents sell their own kids for money. It's an evil world after all.

It’s also ironic that the prequels *sucked*. *Hard*.
