The New Emperor is so much better than the original
@kylethedalek
@kylethedalek 8 лет назад
Yeah totally agree, I don't get why people care about that it makes sense, like Ian played him through 1-3 and 6 so why have a different person play him? And especially when every one loves Ian as him.
@StarGeek
@StarGeek 8 лет назад
+kylethedalek Well, Ian McDiarmid SHOULD have replaced the 1980 Emperor. The old one was pretty awful. The problem is how much they changed the dialogue, and fully gave away what the emperor looked like in a somewhat anti-climactic way. Put Ian in the shadows and have him repeat the written 1980 lines, and this change could have been one of the best.

The dialogue is NOT the only problem with this scene. The hologram special effects are TOO GOOD, and jarring. The hologram "FaceTime" technology is used throughout the film, and NEVER does it come in as clear as this scene. It stands out in a bad way. I am not entirely opposed to a "lite" special editon: like removong black bars around special effects, improving the original audio, or even fixing thks first emperor scene. But this ain't it. This "fix" just introduces new problems of its own.

There are only three sins in my opinion that the maker had destroyed his own franchise: 3. Obi Wan stepped on Lego sound effect. 2. Han shot first. 1. Vader screaming no at the end of Return of the Jedi.

What it IS about is that the new versions are still good movies. Growing up I never realised that I wasn't watching the originals, I mean I knew that the cgi didn't belong in a 1970's film but I wasn't aware of just how many changes had been made. Because of this I don't hate the special editions but I would really like to see how the films were originally
@disuelverocas
@disuelverocas 7 лет назад
I just can't understand why there's a lot of hatred in Lucas' decision to change/renovate the OT. Ok, some of the changes were pointless (like Jedi Rock or Luke's scream), but the rest were indeed needed. Sometimes a tiny detail (such as the dialogues) may seem insignificant to change, but they are and are needed too (Boba Fett's voice change was needed, as Coruscant and Naboo [yes, even the so hated Gungans] were needed, Jabba's scene in Star Wars [which gives more a better look to Han's behaviour/interests in the movie] was also needed). It's very sad that this changes are full of rejection and hatred (stating that 'it destroys people's childhood' or 'destroys Star Wars') just because people are very fatuous to see. Shame on you people.

I remember sitting in cinema in 1997 watching the Jabba-scene in horror. At that time i was pretty much the middle schooler that could have done a better job, doing 3D work towards my job as a videogame artist. And i'm still baffled. The only time i've seen worse was the hell-scene in Spawn from the same year.... What an aweful year for CGI...

Have to agree and underline the annoyance of changing Vader/Anakin's ghost at the end. After all, why would Vader's ghost all of a sudden be so young? Obi Wan wasn't his younger self. Was Vader's ghost young because that was the age that he was officially still on the light side?

Yea the emperor looks way better and i thought the new dialogue was fine. From vaders point of view, its like when you find out someone lies to you but you cant just call them a liar, otherwise theyll beat your face in. So you have to be like "by the way..." and then just pretend to be satisfied by whatever answer he gives. Plus later, vader reveals a plan to luke where they team up and overthrow the emperor. Obviously vader is tired of palpatines shit, but isnt confident that he can challenge him alone. Vader probably thinks he can do a better job as emperor

Regarding Fett's voice: On the '97 SE VHS it's still Wingreen because, of course, Jango Fett did not exist yet. It wasn't until the 2004 DVD that Morrison's voice was added. Hate Morrison's delivery. It's so flat and has no edge like Wingreen's. It's like they just brought in Morrison and had him record those lines in one take and said, "Meh, it's fine." Wingreen's voice will always be Boba Fett for me.
@nicholasmaslennikov2128

Fun fact: they just had him read the lines over the phone, so he was literally phoning it in. I also know that Temuera Morrison can deliver lines much better than he did in the Special Edition from playing Star Wars: Bounty Hunter.

@Silver_Warden

The changes that bug me the most are those that disrespect the original actors, like the voice of Boba Fett. I love Jango and his voice, but the original voice had so much unique character to it that this change is not only disrespectful (imagine being the original actor and knowing that you were just cut out forever after all these years!), but is also a downgrade. Furthermore, Jango and Boba would NOT have the exact same voice even if Boba is an exact copy. There are so many outside factors that influence the way a person sounds, from what he or she eats / drinks to body weight, illnesses, traumas, way of speaking and sound formation, or even pure chance, that for Boba to have EXACTLY the same voice as Jango he had to live his "father's" exact life, which is impossible. Boba Fett might be a clone, but he lived his OWN life with his OWN experience. Also, the ghosts scene. When I saw RotJ for the first time, it was with Sebastian Shaw, and made perfect sense to me, a logical result of previous events: Vader turned back to the light as he died, hence he's back, after all these years, with his old friends. Now, with young Anakin, it's confusing as hell, and if I were Luke Skywalker, I wouldn't smile at them, I'd freak out and ask Ben or Yoda "Wait, who's that, do you know him, or is it just a random ghost who likes parties?.." I also imagine Yoda's probable response: "Your father it is, young and strong he is, old and weak we are, BULLSHIT THIS IS."
@enforcer2007
@enforcer2007 2 года назад
I agree about the Sebastian Shaw thing but I completely disagree on the Boba thing. Idk who plays Jango but he is Jango and Boba and it would make complete sense why they have the same voice. Since you said this 6 years ago, Boba Fett died and only had like 5 lines. but with the Book of Boba Fett you probably agree with me now

The thing is that they feel like they're treating the audience like they're idiots. As if the continuities have to be precise because the viewer won't understand that these trilogies were filmed decades apart and not in chronological order.
@Jdudec367
@Jdudec367 Год назад
None of the changes disrespect the original actors including the voice of Boba Fett. It is not disrespectful or is a downside as it is creates continuity consistency. Yes they would have the exact same voice if Boba is an exact copy. In this context nothing would change Bobas voice enough for that to be the case though, Boba does not have had to live his father's exact life for him to have the exact same voice though. But realistically he would still have the same voice. Except Vader did not have hair when he died and by then he was already dying before he could become a full jedi again so his force ghost would be him when he was last a full on Jedi. It is not confusing, it is not bullshit at all. .

So it seems I'm the only Star Wars fan that respects Lucas' decisions. I'm not saying I agree with all of them, but I give him the respect he deserves. It's Lucas' decision; a lot were made to create continuity. It isn't like the original Boba voice was amazing, either. It was basically just a non-synthesized, basically the same version as the new one. I just...people just need to relax. The originals aren't flawless by themselves, either, guys. +PMURPH08005 Of course "he can do what he wants" but doesn't mean what he wants to do is wise and beyond the reproach of public opinion. When you as a creator release something to the public, in my opinion, you kind of give it away (for money), and any revisions, redacting, etc., should be treated as such. I have very limited experience as an author (a few published magazine pieces), and I learned on the first time, once it goes to print, you just have to await the consumers' response. It's thrilling, nerve-racking, and you always can think of ways you could've said something better or included more, but it is out there in the public and your next move should really be reflected in a new piece of work.

@NeutralGuyDoubleZero

Meh. I actually like the special editions Boba voice more. To be honest the only difference I can see is a more robotish filter on it. Plus, the original voice's delivery seems a bit... wooden. The redone voice actor just does a better job at being more expressive and natural sounding. If people are getting THAT upset over it, then I think thats nostalgia. Same goes for the blinking ewoks complaint. How is that even a problem? It makes them seem like actual living creatures instead of puppets.

@Goblin_Hands
@Goblin_Hands 8 лет назад
I think the first half of DBZ has awful voice acting quite often, whereas the second half seemed good enough. Kai's voice acting is fine, but I feel like they cut out certain humor by making everything serious, and I don't like the music or the Japanese music. If it weren't for the music, gore removal (see King Cold's death, etc), I'd prefer Kai. In Empire Strikes Back, I think the Emperor being HQ in the hologram was an improvement, but all the other additions I'd rather not have.
@NeutralGuyDoubleZero
@NeutralGuyDoubleZero 8 лет назад
OmegaPyron The voice acting stays the same for the most part throughout the series, you mightve swapped editions partway through the series as funi redid their dubs quite frequently with their various dvd series. Kai generally keeps the humor to seriousness the same for most part. Its just that the scenes go by quicker so the gap in length between the serious and the comedic moments are more appearent.

Star Trek fan here, which makes it kind of funny I'm calling you out on a technicality like this: The clones were *NOT* by any means completely identical. They shared the same biological "parent" i.e. Jango Fett, but each of them developed slightly differently and, through their experiences, wound up with unique character traits. Yoda specifically said that each clone was different in the Force, indicating that they were not just blanket copy-paste reproductions of the exact same bounty hunter. Captain Rex, Commander Cody, Bacara, Appo, Vill, and all the other characters throughout the saga were all, to some degree, unique. Even though they all obeyed orders in the end, *some* clones had regrets about Order 66 while others did not. You can't tell me that two ENTIRELY identical clones can have two different thoughts about the same action or event. That indicates that the clones, while similar in their mental training and programming, were ultimately wired slightly differently.

Instead, they're just stormtroopers fighting a trade federation and "separatists" ? Would the Empire really have that much trouble raising an army of recruits?? As the original Emperor wanted to bring order to the galaxy, I can imagine a lot of citizens agreeing with that idea and being motivated to join the Empire's army and navy. It's less contrived. Lucas realized that Boba Fett was really popular, so he decided to give his dad (WTF?) a pivotal role. Isn't it enough that Boba Fett is a badass bounty hunter? Now he has to be related to ALL the fucking stormtroopers? It's just lame fan service.

On the clones being all the same...You never watched The Clone Wars did you? They all had the same biological parent but their personalites varied wildly fro one clone to another cause the Jedi wanted the clones to have a personality so they would perform better in battle. Honestly I don't mind the changes but Vader's "Nooooo" irks me and I grew up watching the unaltered original trilogy and the suspense of that scene where Vader is watching Palpatine fry his son to death and having to choose between his son and his master was just perfect. OH, and Ben's Krayt Dragon yell well...I liked the second one cause my god the third was bad!

Webshooters1 The whole idea that all the stormtroopers of the Empire are clones is incredibly lame. It's much better if they're all just recruits....like an actual army. They have different heights and voices in the original trilogy anyway. Making them clones just dehumanizes the Empire and reduces them to mustache twirling bad guys who are evil just cuz. The Emperor has become one dimensional, and now so have the stormtroopers. Not that they had depth before anyway, but at least showing that young men would be motivated to join the Empire reflects how, in reality, there are always two perspectives to a conflict.
@Webshooters1
@Webshooters1 9 лет назад
demoskunk They did actually at least in the Expanded Universe because since the clones' growth was accelerated they naturally aged faster and after a rebellion on Kamino and having to fight clones bred to defeat the Empire they started recruiting actual civilians to serve ether by recruitment or force and the clones were over time phased out so by the time Episode 4 happened there were few if any clones left.
@demoskunk
@demoskunk 9 лет назад
Ok, I don't know anything about the Expanded Universe and I honestly don't usually care, but I really like that explanation. It takes what was done in the prequels storyline and integrates it into Episode 4 so that it all works properly. Very clever. I hope that's part of the official story in Episode 7 because I just watch the movies and if it's not covered in the movies, then it might as well just be fan fiction (which in this case is superior to George's prequel script).

Another important point about the Hayden Christianson edit at the end of ROTJ. Luke hadn't been able to know his father. He asks Leia earlier in the movie what she remembered of their mother. So, seeing his father alone is an incredible, almost near-death-experience meeting his father at long last. Shaw's grin looks much more heartfelt. Even Kenobi turns his head from Luke to look at Shaw. By inserting Hayden, at Luke's age, there's no sense of a father figure.

Omg your mouth just keeps going and going and going... and going... at 10:59 you are talking about distraction, is that just the irony of the fate or is it just me? All tho, I do agree with you at the number 1, THAT ending could have been left out, since Vader was kinda old when he finally stepped over to the Bright Side... or light side... or something better anyways.

We can agree that a good amount of these edits and inserts were indeed not needed, but neither is your disgusting hate for the creator of an amazingly successful franchise, one of the biggest of all time. +GamesPerJustin I wasn't sure what to think of the change until I saw this comment a few months ago. “Hayden as Anakin at the end isn't a change I agree with... But it's one I understand. After seeing my younger sister watch Star Wars in chronological order, including Clone Wars, the ending had an enormous impact. Hayden's Anakin was her hero and she finally got to see him return to the side of good. The ending was incredible to her and it really made me appreciate it a lot more too. When you look at something through the eyes of a child, it's an incredible thing to see.” For a lot of Star Wars fans the Hayden Christensen version of Anakin is their Hero especially when you add The Clone Wars to the equation. It's the return of a lost hero. Sorry to break it to you, but the Prequels and the Special Edition version are going to be part of the experience for the vast majority of Star Wars fans going forward.
@GamesPerJustin
@GamesPerJustin 8 лет назад
+ShamanMcLamie Yeah, I understand that, and I completely respect your opinion. The fact is, many people seeing Star Wars for the first time are gonna be impacted very differently, especially depending on what order the see it in. I know that if I ever have kids, I'd want to show them the movies in the order they originally came out. I think them not know that Vader is Luke's father before Vader tells him would hit them harder than just seeing Anakin being roasted and put in the badass suit. I think someone seeing old Anakin at the end of Jedi when they see the movies in the order they came out would make more sense because they can put the pieces together and figure out that's Anakin, but seeing a younger Anakin would just throw them off. When someone sees the movies in chronological order, seeing the younger Anakin might make more sense (then again, they might ask why the hell does Anakin get a younger body while Obi-Wan and Yoda get ripped off). It's all opinions, really, and people are allowed to show their kids, friends or family members the movies however they want to. Some people like seeing younger Anakin at the end of Jedi. I, on the other hand, think that change is just plain stupid, and I'll never really understand why people like it. However, I'm not gonna say someone is stupid just because they think differently than I do.

Your complaint on the changes of Sidious in ESB make no sense. Yeah the whole line of Vader asking how is it possible Luke is his son fine enough. Though with the recent Vader comics that have come out, it's plausible to assume that maybe Vader simply kept the knowledge of Luke Skywalker's existence from his master Sidious. Just a fun yet plausible theory. No problem with the scene of what I see.
@StarGeek
@StarGeek 9 лет назад
Freemind Right, but this video was made before the comics. That's actually the one thing I HATE about the new comics, the idea that Vader confronted Luke in between Episode IV and V. In Episode V, Vader's confrontation with Luke feels like they haven't seen each other since the destruction of the Death Star. Vader has been searching endlessly for Luke, and when he finally does, it's impactful. Likewise, Luke has been searching for Vader, wanting to confront him concerning the murder of his mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and father, Anakin Skywalker. The comics kind of ruined that. But I understand what you're saying. :D
@JonathanG94
@JonathanG94 9 лет назад
Personally that didn't bother me of Vader already meeting and confronting Luke. A cool bit in one of the Star Wars comics was Vader catching Luke's lightsaber only to discover that it's his old saber from the time he was Anakin Skywalker. While haven't yet read the Star Wars (2015) series, I've been addicted to the Vader comic series which is turning out to be pretty good and the other comic series' as well.

Most of these changes are pointless and many of them actually worsen the quality of the films such as jedi rocks. It has nothing to do with nostalgia they just butcher the quality of the films. The biggest offender are not just the changes done but the fact that the theatrical cuts of these films have not seen a official release since 1995 even though there has been a loud outcry for them for literally decades at this point. There should not be any reason to have the theatrical cuts of these films released as well as the altered versions but Lucas film refuses to release them not only to the public but to even the united states national film registry.

Boba Fett's voice should've stayed original voice because a DNA replication doesnt the same voice. it possible to still have a different voice just not different physical features

My only problem with the special editions is one of the things Lucas did NOT edit: Those stupid Luke and Leia kissing moments, especially in Episode 5. Why couldn't George get rid of that?! You have them making out then in the next movie you have Leia saying she always... knew...Luke...was...her....brother. Luke finds out he and Leia are siblings and does not give a frick he made out with her.... George Lucas made so many pointless editions that get WAY too much crap. Even Doug Walker was like "Why are people complaining about the Greedo Shooting First thing? It is pointless, but it is ONE SECOND IN THE MOVIE" Why, Lucas, Why? I do not like taring people down but there are so many questions that have yet to be answered. 1. Why do people complain about these things? 2. Do you believe hating will get them what they want? 3. What did George hope to gain with the stuff? 4. Was he TRYING to sabatoge himself? He pretty much just spat on his films AND fans. 5. Why am I still talking?

Leia kissed Luke specifically to piss off Han. She was mad at him and knew he kinda liked her, so she kissed Luke to make him jealous. Luke knew it too, but he just got a kiss from a pretty girl so he didn't really care lol. So much happened to them between then and RotJ that they forgot about it for the most part. Even had they remembered it in detail, they didn't know they were related when it happened and the kiss was never about her liking Luke, so it would be silly to be truly bothered by it. Greedo shooting first weakens Han as a character. Han straight up murdered Greedo, it was not self defense, it was a dick move. It shows that Han was not a nice guy, he was a smuggler who was out for himself. Which made his coming back to help Luke during the Death Star trench run all the more meaningful.

Although Greedo shooting and Hayden Jedi are the worst changes by far, to me it pales in comparison to the point that after the 1997 remastered special editions, the 2004 re-remastered dvd editions, and the 2011 re-re-remastered blu-ray editions...why do I still see green boxes around tie fighters and other ships? This is something that should have been addressed long LONG ago and has yet to be touched. George believes that adding a rock in front of R2, or adding blinking to ewoks, or adding Hayden, or adding Greedo shooting at all, is more important than actually fixing the out of date effects that are severely noticeable on the Blu's. This is why I only watch Star Wars The Despecialized editions by Harmy, or Star Wars Revisited by Adywan (which is actually the true special editions we should have gotten.)

I definitely agree. I actually have a video on the channel about Star Wars Revisited. The other outdated effects are the lightsaber blades. They've barely been fixed at all.

StarGeek Well if you get a chance, watch Star Wars Despecialized...the 2.5 version of Hope is just unbelievable....the original film meticulously restored to HD. There is a documentary about it here on youtube. Look for Star Wars Despecialized Harmy and you should find it...the only way to watch the OT now for me.

Fuzzyfoot88 It's too bad that all of his work has now gone to waste. Disney is officially releasing the Original Unaltered films on Blu Ray in HD.
@Fuzzyfoot88

StarGeek That's all rumor, i'll believe it when I see it because they said the exact same thing 3 days after Disney acquired the rights almost 3 years ago now. The rights are tangled up with Fox is the issue. But even worse than that...look at how bad the films have gotten over the years, bad CC, DNR out the ass, its awful. Even if they do magically release the original unaltered trilogy, do you actually think it will look as good as Harmy's work? I seriously doubt it.

For some reason, I like the the end Celebration for the special editions. It makes the Star Wars universe seem more connected and shows how much people hated the empire.

FYI, some of the character line changes (e.g. "There's nowhere to go" & "You were lucky to get out of there") were either in different versions released long before the 1997 special editions or actually the original lines put back in (the latter example being one of the most notable).

The continuity of Boba Fett's voice: Totally unneeded and ridiculous The continuity of The Emperor's Change in Episode V: A good change and possibly needed. Sure, he isn't as covered and looks a lot less mysterious, but, the Emperor in Episode V looks nothing like The Emperor in Episode VI. But the new Emperor, the Ian McDiarmid one, looks like the Episode VI Emperor. I believe that's needed continuity.

Thanks God that Harmy and his crew (fans of the saga) made de "Despecialized" editions, that put the original vision of the trilogy in HD, with almost no changes. Of course that things like blue Hoth snow were difficult to edit and correct, but almost everything is in their place and with quality. I really liked you video and agree with everything you say.

My favorite special edition change is actually the Hayden Christensen force ghost. I really agree with George on that one, but my least favorites are: Greedo getting a shot out at all, the horribly rendered Jabba cgi deleted scene in A New Hope with redundant dialogue, and my all time worst is Vader screaming "Noooo!" at the climax of Return of the Jedi. For the most part I'm either indifferent or actually really like all the other changes.

The "Clones don't have personality" comment was talking about the clones from the films. In Episodes 2 and 3, the Clones are extremely boring. In the CARTOON, the Clones are actually the most interesting characters.

I grew up in the 80s watching the original movies. As a kid, RotJ was my favorite (largely because of Jabba's Palace). Many years later, when I saw the SE band performance scene at Jabba's throne room, I was in shock and disgust. Jarring, glaring, annoying, irritating, clashing, awkward, shitty, try-hard, degrading, infantile, molestation of a scene. I took the dvd out of the player, broke it, and swore off the SE versions forever.
