Rest in peace to Sebastian shaw who was the face of Darth Vader unmasked, David Prowse the man who played Vader,Bob Anderson the man who fought as Vader and James Earl Jones the man who voiced one of the greatest villains in cinema history, the four of you left an impact that will last forever
Hey don't forget about Bob Anderson. For those who do not know, Bob Anderson was a British stunt actor and Olympic fencer and he played Darth Vader during the lightsaber fight scenes in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
This isn't the death of Darth Vader. Darth Vader died the moment he decided to save Luke and kill Palpatine. This is the death of Anakin Skywalker, Knight of the Jedi Order.
It breaks me that the last thing Anakin hears is Luke saying "I won't leave you" He left his mother. The Jedi Order abandoned him He felt as though Padmé had abandoned him Obi-Wan left him to suffer after besting him, not once but twice. But now someone, finally tells him "I won't leave you".
Very true. Anakin was abandoned and used by everyone, yet here he finally hears that his son never abandon him. Especially after watching the prequel trilogy, those words from Luke hit very hard. Poor Ani.
Obi-wan absolutely turned his back on Anakin multiple times; leaving him to die a slow, painful death on Mustafar, his duel on the Death Star he barely acknowledged their brotherhood, and when him and Yoda basically ordered Luke to kill him twice. Luke was a better Jedi than Obi-wan and Yoda and that’s a high mark to achieve.
Ummm. You’re weeping over the man who wiped out all the Jedi’s except two AND the Padawan children? !!! Of course, the real master of evil is the Emperor who deceived him even after Obi-Wan and Yoda had warned him numerous times.
He had finally been freed entirely, with his soul being saved from all the hate and violence and corruption that was manipulated onto him. The love he had for his son is what freed him completely
I blame that Jedi Council more for what happened to them and why Anakin fallen to the path of darkness. They practically told Anakin to forget about his mother when knowing he was very emotional. They faked Obi-Wan death and deceived Anakin. They unjustly banished Ahsoka from the Order. They didn't recognize him for his abilities and power along with his accomplishments. While I'm not saying the Jedi Order should have been slaughtered, what the Council done to Anakin was wrong.
A lot of what he did as Darth Vader was directly because he was a slave to Palpatine and disobeying him meant certain death. He wanted to kill him and take control because he learned of his manipulation but by that point it was too late. That's why he wanted Luke to join him - he couldn't do it alone, but with Luke he was certain it could be done.
But Luke beared all his father's suffering and refused to leave his side out of love. Then his father told him to leave and go to his sisters because what is this grief worth if not love persevering. Love isn't misguiding when it can make you stronger. Love is Luke.
This is how the man dies. No sacrificing himself in a great explosion, no heroic speeches about changing morals He tells the first person to care about him as a person in years to save himself and then lays back and is gone. Unceremonious, and haunting.
"You were right about me. Tell your sister, you were right" Sounds like a change of morals to me. Darth Vader dies, and Anakin Skywalker is reawakened even if only for a moment.
So human too. The last words Anakin Skywalker ever speaks are about him begging his son to tell his sister that he was more than the man she fought against. That he was once a good man. So fitting.
I can’t get over Luke’s face when he sees his father for the first time. No shock or disgust. Just the most tender smile. He is so happy to actually see him for the first time and Anakin smiles right back. They both really see each other for the first time. Amazing scene and acting with perfect music.
I feel that! One can only imagine the feeling of being seen as a person again after being only feared as a monster by others (and by himself too) for so long
Swaggy Cheese 303, Good Lord, you aren't kidding.....When I was finishing up my last semester in grad school in 1991, they were playing the Star Wars movies on VHS in the student lounge. I walked in as this scene was about to play, and I couldn't handle it and couldn't stay without becoming a puddle of tears....because my own father, who I was quite close to, had suddenly passed away from a heart attack about two days before then.
Darth vader: "son or not, you must realize....you are doomed...." Luke skywalker: _"oh I don't think so"_ *turns anakin back to the light side of the force*
I'm of the belief that Anakin always wanted to be a father. Despite his seeming concern when Padme mentioned that she was pregnant, which was based more on his visions of her demise than apprehension about being a father, I can picture Anakin, who doubtless would want to give a child a better life than the one he received, as being as good a father as he was a husband. It also makes you realize how opposed in his heart he was to his own murder of children, to think that all he wanted was a child of his own. The regret at his deeds and the long-awaited chance to have what he always wanted must have weighed the heaviest on him at his death.
That his chance of meeting his children after their birth was lost due to his embrace of the dark side. But his moment of meeting them and their teens became short and brief. Although Princess Leia is his daughter without knowing and the young rebel is his son who will save him from what he has become to be. After Vader knew that that girl was a daughter. And this news stirred the intense shock in Anakin and he felt regret later for what he had done to her previously.
1 through 6 is the Skywalker saga anything after it isn't worth it George Lucas set out what to do telling the story of Anakin Skywalker from being to end with Luke helping to redeem his father in the end
One of the most powerful moments in movie history is seeing the mask of the galaxy's most feared warrior taken off and then seeing the face of a sad and broken old man underneath. EDIT: Yes, I know he's supposed to be in his 40s, but he still has the visage of an old man. The Dark Side has drained him of his life and youth. It has taken more from him than it ever gave back.
It was a combination of using the dark side so much for a long time, which accelerated his ageing process and turned his eyes yellow. His skin is a deatly pale titanium white because it had been confined in the suit for over a decade and not being exposed natural sunlight. The dark can also cause the user's skin to a pale titanium white as one of the side effects of deep immersion and prolonged usage of the dark side. Palpatine and Darth Malgus were extensive, deep dark side used and it greatly disfigured them over time. Their eyes were a deep Indian yellow and permanent red and their skin was a deathly titanium white. The extensive burn damage on his body from Mustafar's extreme heat were the large, deep scars on his face and head that was still healing up.
@@oludotunjohnshowemimo434 to this day seeing that frail old man in that brooding, bad ass, dark suit just cracks me up. I always think of Vader as one of the most feared people in all of Star Wars, but seeing his face, he looks so old and week...and his voice.

He is finally free from the dark side's grip forever and has found true peace at last. He let go of the anger and hatred and was truly at peace. Unfortunately the dark side aged him faster than normal, badly disfigured, skin turning a pale white and turned his eyes yellow and red. He was constantly angry, bitter, resentful, rage and hate filled but as he got rid of those toxic poisons from his soul, his eyes changed back to its natural colour.
I love how everybody seems to escape and Luke and Vader are the last two people on the death star. Luke is more kind than all those "loyal" Stormtroopers
Maybe I'm seeing this in a little different light but I also feel like there was a sense of acceptance and humility in admitting that he was wrong... Not just in denying that THERE was actually still good in him but that he also indirectly admitted that he was wrong when making those mistakes and turning to the dark side to pursue power, status, while he was dealing with his worries about saving Padme. I mean, who doesn't watch Episode III and wish and think everytime that Anakin would just kill Sidious or expect a different outcome each time you watch it... And that there would be resolve long before all the heartache... However, it wouldn't be worth watching if there was no conflict... (Granted not many people enjoy the JarJar trilogy as it is)
RIP and may the Force be with all of you, Sebastian Shaw (Darth Vader’s face), David Prowse (Darth Vader’s body) and of course James Earl Jones (Darth Vader’s voice).
This proves that Anakin is the chosen one. Despite him turning to the dark side, at the end he was the one who killed the emperor and destroyed the Sith and ultimately bringing balance to the force and dying as Anakin Skywalker not as Darth Vader. Man what an amazing character!!
Actually that's not David Prowse, its a wonderful actor named Sébastien Shaw, who Actually was the Force Ghost Anakin in the original cut and special edition of Jedi, before Hayden Was ever cast as Anakin.
I was four-ish when I first watched this movie and obviously didn't really remember that much from it (took me until my father's buddy lent us his Special Edition on VHS some three years later before I got around to actually become a fully fledged fan, capable of reciting the whole script by heart), but even then I did distinctly memorize one line from each part of the trilogy. And yes, that is precisely the one that got carved into my brain when it comes to Return of the Jedi.
Nobody talks about how problematic David Prowse was onset. Nobody gave him a script because he’d drunkly tell anyone who’d listen what he’d been filming that day, all because he felt slighted that his voice was dubbed 😂
@@lewiskazinsky7334 Nobody told him he would be dubbed he didnt know before movie was released i would be angry too he tried his best only to saw he was dubbed. One thing that really gets me is the way Luke looks at Anakin after removing his mask. Anakin was clearly worried what Luke might think about his appearance, but then he sees Luke smiling at him lovingly, and Anakin smiles back at him being so relieved. Despite the sadness in this scene, it's one of my favourites because both Anakin and Luke share one last happy and intimate moment, knowing they finally have each other back after everything they've been through.
That scene was heartbreaking to me like it's one of my favorite scenes throughout the whole trilogy because no matter what Anakin went through, he died as a true jedi😢😢😢😢😔😔😔
In 1977, nobody could’ve possibly imagined that they would ever cry at the death of Darth Vader. In 1980, nobody could’ve possibly imagined that Luke - ready to destroy Vader - would ultimately hold Vader in his arms as he died, promising not to leave him. Yet thanks to all the subtle hints and the gradual development of their relationship in this film, we buy it completely. And we do cry.
I always thought that Darth Vader (Anakin) would never die. He seemed so untouchable, and to see him in his last mortal moments, made me cry. In the theater, it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Haven't thought about it that way. It really great, and has such a great message, too - hold off killing as much as you can, because killing also harms (corrupts) the killer, and people thought to be "evil" and corrupted forever, can sometimes be saved.
@@monmothma3358 Oh grow up. It was probably the last thing Anakin heard. Despite being surrounded and repsonsible for so much destruction for his entire life, despite being manipulated by so many people in his life, he ultimately died a free man, held by the one person in the galaxy who loved him more than anything.
It seemed so ironic and so fitting for some reason that after the most evil villain of all time was finally defeated, when he was unmasked we could see and hear that he was nothing more than a tired, dying old man. And we also finally knew for sure that he truly was a man and not simply some terrifying machine. It just fit so well.
The dark side sucked Anakin dry and left him a broken, aged and disfigured mess. His body was still repairing the severe burn damage he sustained on Mustafar, hence the scars on his head down to his face.
Vader would've been at the prime of his life had he not been reduced to a cindered crisp whose life depended on a special apparatus like costume. He was only 45 at the time of his death, hardly an old man if you ask me.
Not only that, after everything Anakin had gone through, including his time as Darth Vader, being able to have a genuine moment with Luke was probably one of the most happiest momemts in his life.
0:32 This hurts even more now, they’re both gone now. James Earl Jones and David Prowse brought a legendary character to life and bettered the lives of so many people through their talents, rest in peace to the both of them. Thank you both for everything you’ve done.
One of the best scenes in the film. You actually feel bad for Vader that he's dying, but you're happy for his redemption. Everyone thought Anakin was dead except Luke. Anakin has balanced the Force. He eliminated the Jedi and their moralistic hubris from the galaxy and ended the Sith by killing Palpatine.
It may not have been the way the Jedi deserved to go out by any stretch of the imagination...but like it or not, it paid off two decades later. Luke knows the Jedi aren't meant to bring about overwhelming Light, but teach Balance.
@@UltimaKeyMaster Fr, there's way too much anti Jedi sentiment these days, I think people forgot they're supposed to be looked at as the good guys. Yeah, they're rigid in their ways, but that's what they have to be in order to thrive. Anakin broke those rules and look where that got him. His decisions were bred of fear and selfishness and if the Jedi were so bad, why was Anakin the exception rather than the norm? The system worked for over 25,000 years, it took that long for the Sith to find a way to exploit it, and for only a 20 year Empire.
@@ericjiang8948 even then, much of the jedi's downfall didn't even play into the jedi itself. whether or not anakin joined palpatine, order 66 would have decimated much of their numbers through basically no fault of their own other than choosing to aid the republic. and much of anakin's turn had more to do with "council does a dumb decision" more than even their teachings. What I like about Luke in the original trilogy is he proved both the Emperor and the Jedi order wrong. The Emperor thought that Luke would inevitably fall and join his side (also kill his father), the Jedi order (Obi-Wan and Yoda) thought that Vader was irredeemable and had to be killed by Luke. Luke did neither, he didn’t join Palpatine and he didn’t kill his father, he helped him redeem himself.
Luke is the epitome of a true jedi. A jedi is a peacekeeper, not a killer. He did what a jedi was supposed to do. Yoda told him that you will become a jedi when you confront and defeat Vader by killing him. He was wrong. Luke would only become a jedi if he saved his father, his flesh and blood, also who was a broken jedi without any hope. Luke restored happiness and hope back to his father and turned him back to the light and made him a jedi once more for a brief moment. That is the hall mark of a true jedi
If you look closely, Vader’s eyes turn back from yellow to blue showing that he truly has returned to good (it also matches the colour of the Jedi lightsaber), but his eyes are the same colour as Luke’s indicating that Luke inherited them from Vader. It’s truly interesting how such a small detail has so much significance
Anakin finally let go of the hatred and anger that poisoned him for over 20 years and stopped using the dark side, hence why his eyes turned back to its natural colour from Sith yellow.
Hands down, one of the greatest death scenes in cinema history. To see the most iconic villain in pop culture getting his redemption, in this bittersweet note, shows how Lucas really understood his characters. Truly a masterclass. EDIT: wrote "Luca" instead of "Lucas".
Well, Lucas intended for Luke to take his father’s mask and say “ I’m Vader now. “ so… I’m glad he didn’t go with his original idea. Hard to know who exactly gave him the idea of scrapping his original ending idea.

I've always loved and still makes me emotional that during Darth Vader's unmasking and death, we can hear his theme, the Imperial March, in four different but absolutely gorgeous ways that make this already really emotional moment, even more special. First at 0:45, it sounds sinister... probably to underline what Luke was seeing in that moment, unmasking his father, removing piece by piece his mask, seeing exactly how he became "more machine than man". Then at 1:07 the theme becomes almost sweet, melodic, going along with Vader's smile and the happiness of Luke finally seeing his father's face, after he was able to redeem him. At 1:40 the theme becomes sadder as Vader is suffering while he also hopes Luke is going to tell his sister he was right... there was still good in him. Finally at 2:00, the theme is an extremely sad, soft harp melody. In my opinion both symbolizes Darth Vader's/Anakin's last breath and the end of his life. That theme that always sounded glorious and fiercely menacing is now a delicate, mourning ensemble of notes. God Bless John Williams!

He may have been viewed as a hero by his younger Jedi brethren, but the people he cared for most constantly looked down on him or endlessly criticized him, even the master that was effectively an older brother to him. That, and being seen as the Chosen One from the word go probably got around *rather fast* while being trained, which I'd bet was an instant turn off for anyone trying to make friends out of him when this random kid that shows up way later than anyone else is a sudden prodigy out of nowhere. Let's be frank, at BEST the guy was only ever surrounded by tough love outside of Padme, and going from literal slavery to that is not much of an improvement for his mental state. ...Also, remember, Old Republic Jedi stole children that were even remotely Force sensitive to train them. They *were* slave drivers to young Force users and Anakin was no exception. @Biology doesn't lie You're correct, but remember Anakin was already "too old" when he was brought in. Most of the order didn't believe he could be trained properly. He had too much emotional baggage already and indeed it played a big part in his decision making throughout his life. His mother dying a slave and him not being able to save her scarred him forever. I think the Jedi's strict policies were occasionally too harsh on the very emotional and maybe even immature by nature Anakin. He wasn't built from the ground up as a baby to serve the temple like the others. He had other people in his life he cared deeply for, so it must have been very difficult to try and get Anakin to let go of his connections and give himself fully to the cause. I think him being a young immature kid, he resented the order at times for their policies and especially them constantly brushing aside his fears about his visions of padme dying. Maybe if he was an infant when he was brought in, his attachments to his mother wouldn't have caused such emotional and rash action from him. Anakin could never conquer his fear of losing those close to him. That certainly doesn't bode well for a potential Jedi knight. I agree with you overall though, the Jedi did their best with what they had. The prophecy was correct though, Anakin was the chosen one and he brought balance to the force. Just not in the way anyone could have imagined lol! Tldr I pretty much agree with you, but the council made some big mistakes with Anakin just IMO
And then Disney just $h*t on his sacrifice in saving Luke from the Emperor by bringing back said Emperor rendering Vader's actions pointless. Also, saved son Luke just becomes a whiny...sea cow milkmaid...you know...to make his daddy proud!
James Earl Jones’ last words as Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker: “Just for once, let me look on you with my own eyes.” James Earl Jones, may the Force be with you.
I wonder if they will ever edit in part of the "Vador Rise" theme (At the end of ROTS) just to see how that would effect the scene. Not the loud part where he's being propt, but the part well Sidious says "It seems in your anger you killed her.
Probably but he wasnt wrong when he said that the Jedi are evil in a lot of ways they are and they are responsible for the inbalance of the force and creation of the Sith order.
@@Matheux10 tbh, The Jedi and the Sith are imbalance of the Force. The Sith uses the darkside for bad stuff and all for them self. Meanwhile, the Jedi order is a dogmatic and political tools for the Republic. The Jedi forgot the true way of the force and that's why they're doom
@@deankeefezafirino17 The Jedi became corrupted because they began to serve the republic instead of the force. That's why Qui Gon was never a member of the council, and why count dooku left and became a sith: Dooku wanted to use the force to defeat evil, and then became corrupted by it, while qui gon continued to serve the living force to his death, like a true jedi. Palpatine took advantage of this by making *himself* the republic, and once the jedi served his whims, destroyed them from the inside out like a disease. The good, light side of the force renews and replenishes life, while the evil dark side consumes it lustfully and destroys life, giving only temporary power in return.
I feel really bad for David Prowse (the person who was in the suit) as George Lucas screwed him badly. George never told Prowse his voice was being replaced and only found out when he saw the film. Years later he made the accusation he was stiffed by Lucas and Lucas responded by banning him from all conventions. The thing is Prowse loves Star Wars and loved playing Vader.
Jesus....that gentle harp playing Imperial March, signaling the quiet end to the great Anakin Skywalker is absolutely perfect. I have to save you... You already have...
It’s very fitting knowing that the track used for this scene is titled Anakin’s death showing Anakin had returned the moment he decided to kill Palpatine to save his son
There’s a lot of blaster fire going on in the background when there’s only stormtroopers on the Death Star, there’s no rebels. They’re shooting each other for space on a ship to escape.

@@ryanbarth6691 I agree. Darth Vader was probably thinking "I shouldn't have had all that sadness, anger, fear, and hate in me from the start which brought me to the dark side of the Force."
@@afriendofbean He was bamboozled by Palpatine, and it wasn't until he had lost everything that he realized it, but far too late, and thought that he couldn't turn back anymore. Nor was there any desire to, since he had lost everything and is full of pain and hate. But he always blamed himself for it.
@@matasa7463 Darth Vader is actually named Anakin Skywalker where Anakin went along with Qui Gon just to be trained to be a Jedi and Anakin's mom died where Anakin himself was feeling sad and angry that he wasn't there with his mom when she died where Yoda mentioned to everyone sadness leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to fear, and fear is the path to the dark side of the Force where Anakin was scared that he was alone without his mom which brought him to the dark side which is why Yoda was not willing to promote him to a Jedi leader before Anakin switched to the dark side. Then since he wasn't being promoted, he decided to go to the leader of the dark side which was Palpatine who was willing to promote him as a Jedi leader of the dark side.
Sebastian Shaw, the face of the unmasked Darth Vader/redeemed Anakin Skywalker (1905-1994) David Prowse, the original "body" of Darth Vader (1935-2020) James Earl Jones, the voice of Darth Vader (1931-2024) Thank you, gentlemen, for giving your best to portray one of the most famous villains in history. Rest in peace now.
Damn! The acting, the screenplay, the John Williams' score with the most sad variation of Vader's theme... this is why Return Of The Jedi is the real ending of the Skywalker saga.
@@indepth9930 oh my god can you people praise something without bringing something else down? There are lots of fans who love ALL of the movies like me. And we’re tired of the negativity seeing people bash the sequels when nobody was even talking about them.
1:04 You gotta love how Luke is just smiling after seeing his father's real face for the first time; Anakin looks like he's about to turn to dust and yet his son is just so happy to finally meet the man behind the mask.
What I like even more is according to legends Anakin didn't believe he was worthy of being redeemed. He didn't save Luke so he could come back as a force ghost. He did it because he already lost Padme and Obi-Wan. He didn't want to lose his own flesh and blood. And when Obi-Wan forgives Anakin and decides to teach him the secret of being a force ghost is an incredible story. Anakin was never one who sought power for power's sake. Even at the end of it all when offered the power of immortality he didn't think he deserved it. That's why I've always liked Anakin as a character.
Anakin sought power just so he could save his loved ones and could bring peace after the clone wars as he was tired of it. He never did anything for himself. I have this theory about vader: when ever he battled for the empire, be it in comics ,shows, movies, he probably hoped someone would actually defeat him and kill him so that his suffering which is his life would end. He wouldn't care about the legacy he left behind as Anakin Skywalker a hero and as Darth Vader a villain, he just wanted to die and be free of all pain, hatred and misery. He would have badly wanted to go in battle as he thought that was his only option, but when luke came along everything changed.
Unlike the part where Anakin's entire progress as a Jedi and Jedi Knight with experiences and how succeeded many battles than most other jedis, He believed he was going to be ranked as one of the Jedi Masters but unfortunately got declined by Windu's perspective and the others's disagreement, He got a bit upset about it as he should of had that rank.
There's a certain melancholy that I feel when watching this scene, that right as Vader realized what was truly important, he up and dies. There's also that irony that Vader, the biggest, baddest man in the galaxy (or...the second one), is now laying there, vulnerable and exposed, this pitiful old man probably regretting so many of his life decisions. But there is a sweetness with Vader having discovered what truly mattered to begin with, as Dumbledore once said love is the most powerful magic of them all.
@@justajawausingwifi4642 no he was the most powerful because Sidious was dead and any way he was way more powerful than sidious just in the suit was made to be weak to force lighting
@@Archiejoeawesome It's debatable. In terms of darth vader, he was only second banana to palpatine. He got used and thrown away like trash. In terms of anakin, It was Anakin. He was the chosen one and would have become the strongest jedi ever if he hadn't fallen to the dark side. But at least now his son can succeed him as the strongest jedi ever
@@hobomike6935 exactly what I meant so Anaximander was more powerful then sidious however when he got the suit he became weaker and palpating made it so when he was hit by force lightning the suit would cause more harm towards him he also made it have pins on the helmet and uncomfortable so that Vader would always be angry
0:32 "Just for once, let me look on you with my own eyes." Then follows one of the most brilliantly sound designed scenes. Every sound, the breathing as the mask is removed, the crinkling of leather, all of this to a beautifully melencolic version of the Imperial march is breathtaking. Only to then be followed by one of the most touching scenes in all of star wars. 1:21 "No. You're coming with me. I'll not leave you here I've got to save you." "You already have, Luke.
