Turned 16 in '76, was visiting SoCal from my small hometown of Astoria, Oregon, driving on PCH with the top down of my then gfs MG and this song came on when we looked at each other laughing "wow, this song was PERFECTION" it took a week to find an unsold copy to record onto a cassetted. I got home 3 months later and it was all over the AM and FM stations. Summer of 76 was something everyone should experience in their life...to die happy no matter what.

Not sure how many might be aware but Louis Johnson also played bass on Michael McDonald's "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)." This was with McDonald on vocals/keyboards, Toto's Steve Lukather on lead guitar, Toto's Jeff Porcaro on drums and Greg Phillinganes (Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson) on clavinet (the awesome keyboard sounding instrument that may be most well known in Stevie Wonder's "Superstition"). Furthermore, Lukather, Porcaro, Phillinganes, and Johnson would also all play on multiple tracks of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album (produced by Quincy Jones, who was associated with The Brothers Johnson) at around the same time as working with Michael McDonald. Talk about an absolute "best of the best" support band. Every player was a total all-star and it still shows today in all that music. 😁

The Grass Roots never seemed to get their due outside of the time that the group was putting out hits. My dad was a big fan and that's how I was exposed to the group's music back in the early 1980s. Michael McDonald's "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)," The Doobie Brothers' "What A Fool Believes," and many of the early to mid 1980s hits by Christopher Cross are pretty significant "Yacht Rock" songs that the guys haven't got to yet on the channel as well. To a large degree, the guys have just "scratched" the musical water's surface when it comes to "Yacht Rock." 😂

This superb pop song perfectly encapsulates the sound of the summer of '76. It truly captures the feel of a trip beside the ocean. I also love the way the lyrical rhyming scheme follows the A-B-A-B pattern, where first and third lines rhyme, as well as the second and fourth. You don't get that very often in pop music. (The tune reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.)

The part that really hit was his voice - smooth & sexy & then the lyrics. You can't get better "lines" than you can find with this poetic version - & the good part is that he is warning her of EXACTLY what his intensions are - & how it will be delivered - in a sailboat at night with the moon shining down. It is up to her to decide if she is interested (at all - she doesn't have to go for all that he is hoping. Just let him know that he may be on the right track if he keeps it up.) As you said "it's fire."

Oh the memories from this song! I’m “older” and had my first date when this was popular 😌😉 It makes me think of another song, Starland Vocal Band, Afternoon Delight.

Summer 76 had great songs, this was just one.

The live version is spot on also. The keyboard player looks like my old bookie, the marimba player is classic long haired , unbuttoned vest wearing hairy chested 70s, style. This came out in my senior year of HS, it was one of the fun summer songs that looking back now portrays in your mind a fantastic memory of the times.

This reminds me of the summer of my Junior Year, it played all the time on FM radio, WNAP and WFBQ. We were always outside traveling around playing softball games and this song was at its peak of popularity.

Found you guys, recently. Enjoy your presentation and camaraderie, as a team. Two quick comments: 1- our could not have started the marathon any better, than with Donnie Iris and Ah Leah! 2- Loving the Cincinnati Reds shirt!

Guys did y'all notice the softest smoothest voice you've ever heard. Even the transition same smoothness. I saw them in local coliseum back in 1979 Gadsden Alabama

For Ty, This song was featured in a movie called "Stuck on You," don't know if he ever saw it. Evidently Matt Damon is in the movie. I'm so glad you guys did this song, I was in fourth grade when this came out and literally all of my sisters and me loved this song We couldn't turn the radio up fast enough when it came on. Please do another '70s song, by Nick Gilder, called "hot child in the City". I'm sure you've all seen the movie Big with Tom Hanks. I love this song, it's seventh grade all over again.

So many great wonderful one-hit wonders. Not just the 70s, but 80s and 90s. You could just keep this going indefinitely. I've really enjoyed it.

I love how Ty seems to know all these songs from my era despite his age. Nick too. I'm so glad you guys didn't miss out and just settle for what they pass off as music today.
