Starbucks, Coca-Cola and McDonald’s left Russia, but their knock-off brands live on

Famous Western brands like Starbucks and Coca-Cola that have exited Russia face years of battling knock-offs and unauthorised imports. It’s a risky bid as courts show little sympathy for firms that leave the country. Hundreds of companies pulled out of Russia in early 2022, after Moscow sent thousands of troops into Ukraine in February that year. Some, like Coca-Cola, finalised their exit in August 2022 five months later, but have since applied to defend their trademarks to protect the brands from losing value and in case they return to the country. But the brands face a sea of opportunists, importers and flip-flopping court rulings.

@roland-wo9ks

Nope, these are knock-offs, Starbucks and McDonald's sold their companies to Russian businesses on a condition that the brand name is gonna be changed. As for the soda drinks those are Russian and most of them were sold before the western companies pulled out (Fantola is being sold for a couple of years at least)

I believe that you are right. The manufacturers possibly think they are pulling "a fast one" making people think they pulled out of the market, when they NEVER LEFT! You seem to have insight that not many other comments have. The love of money is too great for them just to pull up stakes and leave. Take care.

Back when Czechoslovakia was still a thing, we didn't have access to coca cola or pepsi, similarly as the Russians now. But when Czechs and Slovaks attempted to make a knockoff, they accidentally created the best drink ever. It's called Kofola (koh-foh-lah) and it's a caramel flavoured, carbonated black drink... But it also tastes like mint, licorice, and a bunch of local herbs. It's delicious, like the perfect mix between a herbal tea and suggar soda. If you're ever anywhere close to the Czech republic or Slovakia, buy some! They don't sell it in many other countries

I'm from the USA, and I've thought that the sodas were just flat tasting. So I'd mix Yogi, "Egyptian Mint," licorice tea, or peppermint, or bergamont tea in my dark sodas. For any one interested, it might work for any one else to try it.

fantola has existed in Russia for 1-2 years btw. Trademarks and "ripping off" huge corporations isn't very punishable in Russia. The only reason it's so punished in the US/Europe is because the companies are based there, and so they are protected since they earn a bunch of money. But there's no point in protecting something that doesn't improve your domestic economy at all.

The funny thing is the knock off brands are probably better for you than the brand names.

I'm still failing to see how these foreign brands leaving Russia hurts them in any way... in fact all the profits they used to make are now going towards Russian shareholders instead

Russia’s economy shrinking by 10% in the near future looks like it’s definitely hurting in the long run however it’s unlikely these knock off brands will last If the actual corporations take action against the knock off brands after the war.

It's just marketing. For the western market. Oo ohh look how much we care about ukraine. We will pull out. Yet they still do business under a different name lol.

I don't actually see a problem with this so long as the products are not being exported to foreign markets where they are directly competing with their larger name brand counterpart. As it is these thousand brand name products are no longer being sold in Russia anymore so there is no economic competition, and the knock off brands therefore aren't effecting the big brand's bottom line at all. No one is actually losing anything, it's not confusing the market just providing an alternative and filling a gap in demand, and frankly it benefits Russian people (as in the every day people with no say in what their government is doing who shouldn't have to excessively suffer with food shortages.. I can't begrudge them for wanting some degree normalcy in the face of sanctions and total economic collapse.. It's just junk food, let them have it lol).

I dont see a major problem with russia decieving its own people with fake brands right up to the next revolution. This is great, it really signals to corporations that russia is a lost cause as it burns down every bridge that ukraine hasnt already shelled.

It’s the American brands that lost when they voluntarily withdrew from Russia. Now stop crying 😢 American companies because you made the decision to leave and open doors to Russian entrepreneurs to fill in the gap.
