A reasonably thorough review on a fantastic game. If you like these types of progression games then I feel safe in recommending Stardew Valley without any hesitation. You should play it before watching the video to experience some of the better surprises yourself.

God I love how pretty much every single criticism he had had since been fixed: Autograbber automates the barns/coop collection Fish tanks now let you display your catches and fish ponds can be built to utilize fishing Spouses now have personalized events that call them away on occasion and your children come to festivals Community center can be randomized, villagers post harder more times consuming requests that give friendship boosts on a special board in town, and after you finish the community center there is another challenge that has a huge unlock reward at the end of it even introducing new crops and a whole new farm It’s just so great when you feel heard by a creator who is invested in taking feedback and improving things so much that there’s practically a whole new game’s worth of content in there while still only costing less than $20

Mako - Marriage has been more developed in general, so there’s more to it now. Friendships still work in the same way, but that’s more of a fundamental problem, though it’s worth pointing out it’s entirely optional and if you’re patient, can mostly be done on birthdays or via special events. The fishing he showed in the video was the hardest fish in the game - most aren’t that bad. Also worth pointing out that fishing is probably the most skill based aspect of the game, and there are other ways to level it up passively instead should you choose.
@Zoewolfspells

This video is about a week late. I started playing The Witness right after I was done with Stardew and ended up playing through the entire game before starting work properly on this video. So I had two (mostly) completed scripts and footage banked. This isn't usually how I do things and it delayed this video more than I'd like. But the upside is that I'm way further along into the next video than I normally am after posting one. I really enjoyed Stardew. I think that shows in the video and that most of it is better understood if you're familiar with the game. One of the best compliments you can place on a game is that you wish there was more of it. I have some Dark Souls content in mind after The Witness but before Dark Souls 3. The game's launch today is starting to look bad again, like the downgrade crap that surrounded DaS2. If I didn't have this channel I'd probably delay buying it for that reason. In any case, even though Namco seems hellbent on ruining the best aspect of their own game, I suggest you avoid watching early streams if you're going to be picking it up.

+Joseph Anderson Really liking your reviews and your video style. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. For The Witness, I'd recommend an extra-strong spoiler warning, because for people who haven't played it, having a certain thing spoiled (I think you know what I'm talking about.... A certain puzzle type) would really diminish the experience of playing it for the first time. Looking forward to the video!

I am considering buying this game, what do you think of the 1.1 Update that just came out? Does it fix some of the issues you mentioned in the review? I am the sort of person that played WoW but hated the mindless quest grind to level up, but I think this game's sort of progression grind where you get to look back at all you've created at the end and see all you've built looks really satisfying.
@Buggaton
@Buggaton 7 лет назад
1.1 added heaps and fixed a lot of things including balance. It did add a little more end game content although not as much as was suggested in this video. Hopefully more will be forthcoming ^^ It's already an outstanding game though. I, personally, loved the idea of Harvest Moon but hated the time limit (in terms of days) that the game forced upon you. Aside from a cutscene at the start of your 3rd year (in which Grandpa comes along and judges your farm... and in this new patch has been made so you can access it any time after this point for a new judgement freely) there is no end point. You're allowed to take as much time as you like and should be encouraged to do so. It's a relaxing and wonderful game. I'm currently on my 2nd playthrough where I'm trying to do things in a more min/max kinda way but only because I like challenging myself. The base game was fantastic without needing to worry about such trivialities and taking your time grants you a huge sense of satisfying progression as you go through the game with so much content and upgrades that feel like they're always the correct price and just the right amount of rewarding. Buy it! :P

And regarding the animals not producing enough profit - it's only like that at first. They produce higher-quality products the happier you make them. And you can easily turn them into artisan goods with mayo machines or cheese makers. But you're right, hiring a farm hand would be cool.
@neitsuke
@neitsuke 7 лет назад
All of this still makes animals not worth your time, because they require so much work and care every day, while farming only needs you to plant seeds, water once then harvest. The biggest issue with animals is how much space they require and how costly it is to feed them. It's impossible to have enough grass and have it regrow because they eat it too fast, so you are forced to buy grass starter, 100g, or hay, 50g, once you don't have any grass. Like he said, only pigs are worth your time. You only need to pet them, let them go outside and wait for truffles. You don't even need to make the oil because Iridium quality basically makes them sell as much as what the oil is valued at
@Dillinify
@Dillinify 7 лет назад
All of these problems you mention can be avoided if you know what do do. You only have to buy starter if you cut down all your grass without having a silo. If you let the grass live and give it space, by the time you get your animals, it'll last infinitely and you can store the excess in the silos.
@neitsuke
@neitsuke 7 лет назад
db Problem is I know what I am doing. I have 4 silos and a huge area with grass. If I let the animals outside, there's no more grass after 7 days. If I let some grass grow outside just enough to regrow, the hay stockpile will decrease rapidly with my 48 animals because the grass will be too slow to regrow, making me either have to buy grass or hay every 2 weeks. Don't forget that cutting grass doesn't give hay all the time too
@thorwrigglesworth5116
@thorwrigglesworth5116 4 года назад
@@neitsuke Notice how the animals in the video have a black cloud when petted. this is due to a lack of consistent, daily petting meaning the product from said animal is of lesser quality. Once at 5 hearts you obtain large milk of golden stars daily which sells for more than the standard cheese. point is JA is attacking the wrong issue with the grass/going outside. Edit: If you put a fence post/lightning rod on grass starter, it will spread whilst also not being able to be eaten. ie a permanent grass spawner
@neitsuke
@neitsuke 4 года назад
@@thorwrigglesworth5116 Even considering quality, animals were the worst manner to make money and wasn't worth your time spent on them for how little the reward is compared to gardening. Since then it has been alleviated with the container that collects all products and I think now, quality matters when refining products. Even with the rod on grass trick it doesn't matter since grass grows way too slow to keep animals fed outside. At the time I had 4X12 animals and I couldn't keep up too well with grass and hay. Now that I scaled down to 24 it is far more manageable

What saved my first playthrough I think is that I completely ignored the social aspect of the game (except for Linus, he was my bro). Losing cutscenes and food recipes was fine by me. So it balanced pretty well. My second playthrough however... I wanted to see what was up with the rest of the people of this town. But I couldn't really let go of the need to optimize harvests and collections which resulted in much stress indeed 😅 I ended up bailing after the first year. Looking back at this video in retrospect gives lovely insight into how much the game has improved. Farm animals can now be almost completely automated with auto petters and auto gatherers. Fishing is largely in the same spot it was in but the museum now has artifact troves that can be bought in the desert. Friendship and marriage is also in the same spot it was in but i think it fits the game. There are more things added but still no true endgame, most play the game to 100% if they are looking for endgame like tasks to do. Very nice video!

It still makes me laugh that the game starts out with the whole "escape your boring daily routine job" and is then a game mostly about routine, at least when it comes to the farming part. I honestly felt like I was working an unsatisfying job rather than playing a fun game, and went back to exploiting the land more efficiently in factorio after about 6 hours. It's possible that I would now feel the same way about Harvest Moon and Rune Factory, but from what I remember I enjoyed the town and characters a lot more in those games, giving me something "worthwhile" to grind for.

+TMTLive You know, before a started playing this game, I made a commitment not to try min-max. I always try to min-max when I play those kind of games, but this time I didn't. And really, it never got dull to me. It was one of the most relaxing experiences I had with a game. I just went with the flow, did things however I could, with what time was given to me. And like that, I discovered that I enjoy a lot more without trying to be as efficient as possible. Otherwise, it feels I working. I think that's why I hated both Factorio and Infinity Factory.

Eduardo Bordinassi Even working doesn't feel like working if the problems are constantly changing and require interesting and creative solutions. Stardew felt like working to me exactly because it doesn't require or stimulate the player to try to find interesting ways to develop their farm. For me, the way Stardew lets the player do whatever they want breeds a feeling of meaninglessness, while Factorio, Space Chem and Infinifactory are incredibly free yet still restrictive enough to make what freedom you have in making layouts feel meaningful. I can understand that others might like relaxing, mindless games, but to me that is exactly what working is. Clicking my virtual crops felt infinitely more like boring office work than laying out complex self-supporting systems, which is incredible because my job IS programming complex interactive systems. That said, it did at times succeed in making me tune out and just go from day to day tending to my farm without feeling like I'm wasting my time. This is going to sound weird, but I think there is one slight problem with the camera system that actually ended up being the cause of my inability to get entirely immersed in the grinding, and that was the edge of the farm map. In games like Rune Factory, if I remember correctly, you would always water right in front of you, so to water an entire lane you had to keep walking in that direction and press the watering button in a certain almost therapeutic rhythm. Stardew almost does the same thing, as you can just keep your cursor right next to your character and thanks to the character that directly follows you it'll always be one tile ahead as you keep walking. Sadly, when the camera can no longer go right, you start having to think about your mouse placement again, and that small window of "oh wait I have to-" I think is what caused me to realize that I was "doing" nothing during the rest of the game. I should note that I never tried to min-max. In fact, I hardly even looked at the sales prices of whatever I was selling. I think I'd love this game if I was a NEET, though.

Love your reviews bro, glad I found your channel. Do you ever/will you ever stream? On topic: I wish you could use the finished community center or Robin to build town improvements, like a small house (with mini bathhouse) for Linus, more rail-carts (wizard/hidden forest plz), etc. I was disappointed that you can't do more with the witch, and that some villagers have no heart events yet (Pam). There was a patch to improve married characters, but it didn't do much. Sebastian now spams me with "I need time alone, it's not you it's me" and gets jealous whenever I gift another bachelor. Plus, he accepted to stop smoking but still smokes during festivals since it's 'stock footage'. I'd prefer a harvest-moon-like kid system, where the kid's appearance depends on who you marry (even through adoption maybe). And I wanna pick the colour of my horse, dammit.

Outstanding Review, wish you do more reviews selfishly as they are so in depth, but then I think maybe it is good you only did 10 or 15 on the games you had a real passion for, real hope for, and those you loved or hated with equal ferver. I thank you for the upload and the tremendous time these in depth ones take, an those huge 1 hour plus ones take like your Fallout 4 and Diablo 3 reviews must of took WEEKS.

The best way to manage storage in stardew valley is to colour code everything e.g make the chest with foraging stuff green and the chest with fish blue ect. That way you can easily find everything. With friends its good to win them over at the start of the game. All foraging items make the ppl happy and you don't always need the best items

I'm not sure if you decided to ignore that by talking to the townspeople you increase your relationships slowly for times sake or if you were just unaware of the mechanic. That mechanic itself can be pretty time consuming and it can be difficult to maintain it daily, however, it is much easier then gifting people and I've noticed it quickly builds up if you just drop by when you have free time.

Just to mention the ConcernedApe has already worked a bit on improving the marriage issue. As of a recent couple patches spouses have more unique dialogue both normally and at festivals and will leave the farm one day a week to go do something in town. I believe he intends to continue improving this but that's what he's done so far.

I agree 100% on the friend meter part. It wasn't until winter of Year 2 that I really started befriending characters and I was shocked to find out that they actually had personalities and interesting story arcs. Before that they were just mindless drones that seemed to take forever to accept the new farmer that supplied them with basically everything.

I like your style. You are one of the few reviewers that actually criticize a game's design choices. I learnt a lot from your review. One thing I don't know if you already knew it by now is: Many game design choices exist because the developer of this game is a fan of story of seasons series and they exists in that series. The marriage, the relationship, and the farming animals are almost the same for this game and the series. I am interested in them because they show the good and bad of the combination of farming stimulation and grinding game. Many designs in this game and the original series are for stimulation of peaceful country life, and grinding and reward system seems not integrated perfectly in all of them.

I enjoy your perspectives alot. You say it as it is and you are able to highlight the hood while displaying the bad and in general every game comes out of your videos as a mix of pluses and minuses. Exactly how a game is. There is no game without flaw. And there is no game without great aspects (sometimes you just have to look very deep :D)

Interesting critique there. I agree on a lot of your peeves, especially the automated furnaces and stackable items. The game has had some updates since, which really sorts out a lot of the things you speak about. I.e colour coded chests. Also.. Who puts the heater in the middle of the barn?!

I think the issue with animals is a carry over from harvest moon. Except in harvest moon you don't have to build barns initially and animals give a lot of money and crops (initially) give much less relatively. But in star dew you're like a one man industry

Regarding the inventory and boxes - you just have to be strategic about what you carry and what you do with it. I've made it through 100 hours of SDV perfectly fine (completed the community center and got all 4 candles lit the first time) with just three boxes. And furthermore you need to organize properly. You just throw everything into random boxes. I have one box for farming, foraging, & fishing items, one box for mining & combat items, and one box for clothes, furniture, & miscellany. So when I need an item, I know exactly where to go.

I agree with all of this. It would have been awesome to have a farm hand who you could assign work with a menu each day, something done with the kids (which I believe they've fixed in the latest updates), and SOMETHING beyond the community center. No one goes in there after you've completed it either, except one or two NPCs on a few select days. Like all of your effort was not worth it. I'm on my second play through, though and I love the game. At least in the Elliot marriage, he has some interesting flavor text that makes him more interesting.

there has been a huge update to stardew valley, marriage was improved a bit because the dev did feel it was a huge problem. also you can change chest colors to help with organization (but I never really had a huge problem with that and I like the regular colors), most of the other stuff is kinda minor but lots of bug fixes. the game has kinda died out but idk thought i'd let you know. I don't really play anymore personally, but it is nice to revist got like 200 hours out of it.

The struggles of early game is always enjoyable to me, regardless of what I'm playing. The only problems this game has are the ones you listed, I'm sitting here trying to think of any other and you covered all of them perfectly. You gotten good at this, Joseph! Any other amazing recommendations? Anyway, I'm looking forward to Dark Souls 3 Critique, which is probably 3 months away, eh? There's another game in a similar vein that's called "World's Dawn". It's much more simple and looks less polished than SV, but it executes the relationship aspect much better. When you reach a certain amount of hearts with a marriage candidate, they will come to your house and ask you to be their date. If you agree, you become a couple and can later marry them. There are certain festivals with romantic history in which you participate with your partner (and they are sweet as hell), and when you propose, *everyone* will know and have something to say to you. The wedding feels like a big deal - it's attended by (as far as I understand it) your closest friends, they will all congratulate you and later there will be a cutscene when your spouse enters your home for the first time. And after you do get married, everyone, once again, will know and comment on that. All of this gave me a feeling that I'm really getting married, unlike SV, in which everyone pretty much forgets about your wedding as soon as it's finished. I'd also say that in WD becoming friends is much less annoying - first, because you know from the beginning what the characters like, second, because you can give them a gift each day (you can even give several gifts a day, but only the first one will give you a relationship boost), and third, because just talking to them seem to give much more points than in SV (like it should). So if you were not that interested in the farming aspect of SV, but liked the townspeople, I suggest you try "World's Dawn" - I think you might enjoy it.

Inventory management should be left alone as it is already perfect imo. Player who build and then orderly and logically store their items in respective boxes have no issues in this regard. I purposely made lots of boxes inside and outside of my house. Inside house to store dishes, ingredients for cooking, wallpaper and tiles, and equipment for going mining. Outside house to store everything else, but they are in order: high turnover goods (ores, wood, stone, grass..), crops, and everything else. 6:48 proves my point: why would you bring axe, fishing pole, milking pale, water jug, and scythe at mining when you have already troubled in inventory spaces anyway? Fishing problem: Fishes are for dishes. Also about the no-true ending problem. ConcernedApe has addressed this issue: he purposely made it so there is no ending forever.

since this review i am happy to say that this game got so much bigger it makes me grin to think about the endgame is most notable after the community center/ joja mart you get to go on a quest for the wizard which is pretty basic the hardest thing to get is void mayonaise which is much easier now that krobus sells void eggs doing this will unlock a book in the wizards tower which contains multiple endgame structures that do helpful things some of them are pretty lame but its definetly something they added a movie theater if you do community center which allows extra scenes a few new events a special item that offers you notes which give helpful advice including favorites for every charachter as well as answers to the games most cryptic secrets there are also multiple new options for house mates and i say that because if krobus or the dwarf are cool enough with you then you can get them to move as well as other spouses pretty much every bug in this video has been fixed animals are now automatic (with the purchase of a collector from marnie) you can now make fish ponds upgrade your house once more for a aging cellar there are more farm layouts with (somewhat) interesting changes an extra scene for every spouse and so much quality of life stuff i cant expound on it and more notably than any of the previous shit the game has multiplayer now with it designed to handle up to four players and with dev support the modding community has flourished giving the game basically limitless potential the game is at this point about as good as it could possibly be quite simply because if you come to the game looking to play something like it the game is functionally flawless

This is my second favorite game ever (one being BOTW). I love the characters, the thought process of planning your farm, making it look good and the optimization of both. The story and phlishopy of the game co-exist perfectly by not forcing the player to really focus on the story and more so just do it a little every once in a while.
