STARFIELD: How to Disable, Board & Steal a Ship to Keep For Yourself

In Starfield you can five finger discount yourself a new ship - disable, board, "remove" the current owners and then steal the ship for yourself as an upgrade. Pay a small registration fee and it's yours to do with as you please. Here's how to steal a ship in Starfield and what it looks like jacking a new ride. NOTE: that after making this I discovered you CAN sell ships, ask a dockworker to buy new ships then hit R to go to sell. You can sell owned ships from here though I cannot seem to sell the Frontier, possibly because it's the story ship or I have a quest associated with it. Regarding whether it's profitable to steal and sell ships I will have to test more later!

NOTE! You can indeed sell stolen ships! Ask a dockworker to buy new ships then hit R to go to sell. You can sell owned ships from here though I cannot seem to sell the Frontier, possibly because it's the story ship or I have a quest associated with it. Of note if you are stealing a pirate ship and you are playing an upstanding character. Most pirate ships have contraband on them. Make sure to check the ship for contraband and jettison it from your main docked ship before you fly into any UC/Freestar space.

you can sell ships when you go to a mechanic and pick the buy option. then press R iirc to go to the selling window

I am sure you know this already You can register the ship via the ship section in the main menu which is cheaper than registering via a planet. Sold my ship at the ship rep at the landing pad.

One of my favorate features in the Egosoft X series of games is capturng ships. I'm glad this is something they've included in Starfield.

What if your current cargo is higher than the ship you're trying to take? Same with the number of crew members? I wish you could choose to leave your cargo on your old ship..

It just runs overcapacity and you cant add anymore to it but otherwise it's fine.

What I need to know is what happened to the ships that land on planets say bounty hunters for instance you kill all the bounty hunters off you run to the ship and you can't board the ship anymore every ship on the game doesn't have any entrance or exit down to where you can actually board the ships

I stole a Pirate ship and managed to sell it. I wish i hadn't though it had a grav drive that worked in a fraction of the time which i forgot about. so now have a long grav drive boot up time again.

Okay but is it only these single ships that have markers on the map that you can board? I’ve tried doing it on a UC ship and various others and the docking option is never there. I disable their engines but I can’t board them

You can dock and board almost any ship! Not sure what went wrong with yours. You have to be within 500m and engine disabled. Story /quest related ships may not be board able though.

@@ZiggyDGaming I’ve just given it another try and it seems maybe when you’ve got other enemies after you, you can’t board that one ship. Idek haha. Just trying to test things out so I know how they work

It's not really a specific encounter, but rather just any ships you come across (pirates are easiest). You can even steal a Galbank ship though.

No perk needed just take your new ship to port and your old one will be in your fleet. You basically cannot lose the frontier.

Don't join the Rangers and then do this your bounty will be ridiculous and increase way over the mission payouts each time

OH MY GOD HATING THIS GAME BECAUSE I CANNOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME DISABLE A SHIP!!!!? wtf is going on, I have a mantis ship so I have the disruptor, I have everything I should have to be able to do this. I have the targeting system... and every time it just freaking blows the ship up

Sounds like you're using a weapon that does hull damage or have an autoturret that is. The proper em weapons do no real hull damage so there is no chance of blowing them up.
