A reupload, as I thought notifications failed earlier. Turned out that RU-vid had a meltdown and stopped view counts. Sorry for the double upload, and thanks for watching! :)
After listening to this video my enjoyment of the game went up a solid 15-20 %. The main thing I was missing was spending more time on the spaceship simply looking around and using the scanner to find a lot more fun stuff to interact with. Thank you for showing me how to enjoy the game even more. ❤
@@dagoeliusbruh chill starfield is a great game and people love it for what it is 🤷🏻♂️ if it was horrible it would have been another cyberpunk release but no people are actually playing and enjoying it
Great clip! A few more things worth mentioning. Some planets have multiple biomes. When you see "biome complete", that means there are no more new discoveries of a type (flora, fauna etc) left in that particular biome. You will have to launch into orbit again and land in another biome on the planet you are surveying. Occasionally too, you will have to go to the ocean to find sea creatures if you have exhausted your searches for all fauna on land. Finally, when you are selecting a new landing site, the descriptor that pops up when you hover over a prospective site will tell you what type of biome it is and the percentage of how much you have already explored that type on the surface. Happy exploring.
To me the most urgent DLC/FLC Bethesda should do would be to increase the stuff to explore and the species to discover, because right now, you fast start to stumble again and again on the same natural occurences or animals. Not cruising by yourself is already disheartening, but when you start finding recycling content after barely 3 hours of exploration, this is a real let down.
Took me 4-5 days to see a lot of re-use, and then suddenly I saw lot of new stuff. So I think maybe you've been unlucky and it will change a bit. However, I support to get more, maybe expand with more outer planets with new systems. This game just screams for a good DLC.
@@neXib Depends what you do, I found recycled content fast because I was playing an explorer/outpost manager. And I continue to find the same natural occurences again and again (plus new ones here and here). All flora tend to look the same too. If you can breathe, you'll see green forest for example 90% of the time.
this, i wish they improved space combat and travel a bit (more like elite), AND add more random exploration stuff, be it space combat that varies a bit more, or quests, structures, loot on surface.
I have been having a good time exploring, but having a bit of trouble landing on an ocean shore to explore ocean fauna. I like that there’s a light puzzle element to the exploration and not everything is handed to you by your all-seeing scanner.
I’m so far enjoying the game a lot. It isn’t great on anything but it all works out. I hate plenty of different aspects, but in the end I don’t care about them because I’m just hooked up to the game. There are so many things happening all the time!
@@Equatis sell it to Vladimir for the most credits, i have seen. I am not absoulutely sure but, i think surveying and selling that data enables his "find an anomoly" quest, that you will most likely want. Other people buy them. There is a guy in Cydonia(?) the mars place you go to for mainquest. Look for dude next to table of books. I would stick to selling to vladimir.
I got to a certain part of the main quest which was profound in its implications and felt I needed to reload an older save just before searching for Andreja so I could enjoy the game fully. I also didn't realise there is a ship combat simulator on New Atlantis where you can farm perk points.
@@SusannaSaunders Join the Vanguard located in the MAST building and you have to take a test in a simulator against waves of enemies which gives you XP. Once you have passed the test, you can revisit the simulator at any time. There are 6 waves in total but you only need to survive three to pass the test.
@@braveheart1985 Thanks for this information! I really (REALLY) suck at the ship combat. Any combat the ship combat especially (even on 'very easy' - for someone else). It might be made worse by the very janky 1080 Ti GPU I'm using but ouch! That's no excuse. I can't see that test going well lol! I'd flunk it so badly it would be hilarious to watch! Wave one - dead in 30 seconds (20 of which would be while the shield still held). Perhaps I'll do it just so that I can put the video up on YT for a laugh (for other people) 😋 It might help though as I can only 'improve' from 'Catastrophic' to 'Total Disaster Zone'. Any help is badly needed!
Couldn't survive the 6-th wave no matter what i did with debag menu... Commander's comment about bots cheating from 5-th wave made me laugh hysterically😅
Kryx, lol. It’s part of a really cool side quest. One planet I visited had a “Pitch Black” the movie kind of setup. Roving groups of monsters during the night. Totally cool.
There is currently a small bug with surveying. F.e. it shows a Fauna missing and you are not able to find it because there a different areas which have an extension of (Coast). So although you have scanned f.e. Rocky Desert for 100% there is a Rocky Desert (Coast) also showing 100%. But you find the missing Fauna in the coast section. This goes for any other area. Also it's possible some Fauna is only found in caves!
@@aethelwulf20001 On the same, if you select a spot to land on the coast area, you might land up to a kilometer away, so you might have to do a little hiking.
On the back of this, and it might seem obvious, but you sometimes land fairly far away from the coast. Use your compass to run in the direction the coast showed on the planetary map (which can sometimes take a while, but stick at it).
i dont think thats a bug because on the system map if you target to land in coast variant it has a percentage you need to get too, also you need to go to coast to 100% the ocean as well
Also don't sleep on the PAYLOADS talent in the Tech tree. While the icon and name might suggest it's about missile payloads it ACTUALLY increases your ship's CARGO HOLD space by up to 50% iirc. So you get alot more out of your cargo modules!
I like that you are very professional with this game. I mean that you don`t give strong judgement if this is good or bad game. You simply talk about traits, activities etc. It is hard to be as objective as it is possible. Good work.
Oh man. Totally missed the fact that you could land on the planet using the ship scanner. That's a great tip that increased immersion 10 fold. No need to go to the map for landing on the landing zone as well.
Resources only need to be scanned once each. More importantly, if you see part of the ground becomes highlighted by the scanner you can just scan the ground instead of trying to find an harvest-able object (rock/pool/vent/whatever). Also when you've surveyed a planet or moon, even if it's incomplete, you get a "survey data" item in your notes inventory which can be sold.
Thanks for the video, observing ant. ;) The scanner gives you information like the temperature on a planet. You might consider this when you choose your clothes. Its also not an bad idea to have some special medics handy. What the surface scanner doest show you early are things like poison gas. You have to see it with your eyes and get a sense for situations. Love this game so far.
There's a long mission chain involving Crimson Fleet and UcSysDef that takes place partly in the Krix system. I bet those pirates blew you up quick. If I remember right, you start the quest by getting caught with contraband on your ship in a UC system.
@OA: casually points out ( ~ 11:45), "do keep in mind that some animals can be aggressive" 😂 - Good stuff, mate - well put together - The tip on bringing up the AR markers when piloting was especially useful - the game's tute / doco glosses over or omits this! - I expect it was refreshing to be able to do this sort of guide - given where Elite's gone and where SC is at ... a long time between drinks of this sort!
While Starfield has some areas which could use some polishing, I am enjoying the game the longer I play. If you're looking to become a Space Ace (and enjoy space combat more) spending some time grinding up your starship related skills in the UC Vanguard simulator is well worth it.
Star colour (and size) on the map should be based on their classification, and whether you can jump to it should be based on distance alone. Just a couple of those small QoL mods that people will make that makes such a difference to a game like this.
Make sure you get to and complete the "into the unknown" mainquest, before exploring. Also consider getting a Skip Booster Pack to help with traversing.
Curious about where you are finding these NPC encounters on surfaces that offer you missions. This only happened to me when I visited a civilian outpost, but never at a random landing site that’s procedurally generated… is your experience different than mine?
They are randomly generated on planets. You need to jump on a system; scan the planets; that will show you the POI on each planet/moon; then land there and scan the POI and it depends what you find there, as you can find either a cave, an abandoned settlement, a pirate settlement or a peaceful settlement with quest givers.
Same. I keep running into the exact same caves and outposts with the same NPC's in the same spot with the same loot 20+ times on different planets. Nothing is unique in this game. And it's all fast travel with no exploring.
not really relative to this video but which is the preferred method for download steam or game pass? I don't have game pass but I've seen it on the Microsoft Xbox marketplace on my PC but I do have several other steam games, which way do I go?
@@ummerfarooq5383 so since I'm playing on PC, what other option do i have? i thought Xbox was the only hard copy version? i went to starfields website direct, it directed me back to either steam or the Windows version of the Xbox marketplace....
need to know where to store all my shit, I've somehow managed to pack 1000kg of stuff into my ship but the second I unpack any of it I can't fit it any where. I built a storage unit on some moon but forgot where it was so that's just gone. Also I fully acknowledge my lameness but aim assist doesn't work and I just end up spraying everywhere.
While there are a couple decent tips in this guide about using the ship's scanner, the overall experience of "exploration" in Starfield is extremely shallow and empty. Scanning planets is little more than pressing a button to reveal handful of boring points of interest that have all been seen hundreds of times before. There is virtually no reward or incentive to explore beyond the main storyline locations. Even the much-touted "surface encounters" amount to nothing more than a few repetitive enemy groups or lifeless landscapes to trudge between. No memorable characters, lively towns, or intriguing side stories to discover. The complete lack of any interesting "flora and fauna" perfectly sums up the dull, sterile procedurally generated content strewn across the thousands of samey planets. A handful of plants and animals copied and pasted endlessly is not exploration. Overall this guide only serves to highlight how little there actually is worth discovering in Starfield. No amount of tips can compensate for the total absence of meaningful, handcrafted content and life breathed into this so-called "main feature" of the game. True exploration it is not.
I do think this game is a bit of a slow starter but once you get going it's really good. I think it's completely blown Bethesda's previous stuff out of the water. I do think you are better avoiding most of the fast travel stuff as it's way more immersive that way.
I wouldn't even begin to say it blows other titles out of the water.. It barely matches them to be honest.. NPCs don't have schedules.. Nearly every store is an empty shell inside with 1 shop NPC. 99% of every NPC is either a soulless drone walking to "fill space", or don't move from their positions at all ever, like we're playing Morrowind again back in 1998. The Settlement system is a joke compared to Fallout 4, massive step backwards. (Yes I understand it was overwhelming for some, but you don't need to simplify the mechanics AND remove 95% of them at the same time) The area's to explore on planets are the same 5 POIs copy pasted over and over and over... Only 2 enemy types.. Eclipse, or faceless "Spacers" None of this plays or feels like a true Bethesda game.. It plays like a literal Ubisoft "jump through the same 5 hoops" game. Land on planet, explore the same 5 POIs.. lift off, rinse repeat... Exploring the cities sucks.. There are no random buildings, or schedules to try to get around to loot houses.. there are no houses.. NPCs don't go to sleep.. it all feels so fucking STALE... Jump into a system.. EVERYTHING is around that 1 little jump in area... nothing to really explore in the system outside of that little jump in area... To say this game "blows other bethesda games out of the water" is such a weird take for such a bland stale game.
@@Cramblitjust say you played 2 hours and found it boring. Your worst argument was the lack of enemies when theres literally hundreds of alien monsters, a variety of robots and machinery and other type of human enemies that you clearly know nothing about Your second worst argument was the gameplay loop you described. You just described the free roam gameplay loop. You do understand that the Core gameplay loop is questing, right?
@@victime4360 I ihave 60 hours in it actually. and 100's of alien monsters doesn't really count lol.. they're all the same, they just look different.. It's like saying there are 100's of different eclipses just because of the armor/weapon differences between them... Gtfo
The biggest wasted opportunity of this game for exploration is to not use something like a minigame for scanning planets and moons, like Mass effect or Elite Dangerous. They could easily implement a small minigame to scan planets, like the one with the probe in Mass Effect 2; or the more complex one in Elite Dangerous, with the frequency search and spectrogram. That would add a lot of fun, although this is a RPG and not a simulator to be fair
@@brannon1030 I really hope so; that is probably the only thing that can be changed without involve actual developers. My hope is still to see an updated/special edition of Starfield in 5-10 years with changes to travel and traversal; for PC only. I would buy it again without problems to be honest.
I'm only about 20 hours into Starfield but my jury is looking to be hung. I loved Oblivion and Skyrim (even created mods for them) and Fallout was nice (the first one), but the menu mechanics in Starfield have taken a massive step backwards into obfuscation and wildly unnecessary complexity. Every other Bethesda game has gotten massive UI mods from "amateurs" that make the games actually fun to play - why hasn't Bethesda learned anything from the mod community? Deciphering the menu system should not be treated as a game skill you have to spend time mastering. I had the usual run of bugs (NPCs flashing around like.. the Flash) and a few crashes on launch, but it's playable. The story line, so far, is pretty bland but it does lead you into all the game mechanics (unfortunately.) Space travel sucks. I wouldn't mind the click-and-arrive so much if you could just find the damn click without wading through 5 screens. I may just set the game aside until the official mod tools are released and the game that Starfield wants to be emerges.
I'm glad people are enjoying it, but I am having trouble getting past the mediocre voice acting and the robotic, souless NPCs that Bethesda just cant seem to evolve out of. Then the exploration fell flat for me when i did enough to realize there are only a handful of structures that are copy/pasted right down to every enemy, container, and decoration. I knew it wasnt going to be Star Citizen or Baldurs Gate, but what surprised me was just how much it made me think about and appreciate Cyberpunk. The classic Bethesda snap zoom, stone faced, good enough voice acted conversations just don't cut it anymore.
I would actually argue that it’s not because Cyberpunk is that great of a game but more because Bethesda is so far behind the times that it makes all other modern AAA games look decades ahead.
Lol you do not need a video for this just pick a direction or flip a coin for one and go the world unravels before you. But any good starfield publicity is welcome
This game is NOT ready yet. I had to refund it, sadly, due to its very POOR optimization. I had incessant stuttering, fps drops, and audio inconsistencies. Wait at least 6-8 months for a more reliable product, everyone.
I feel this is an amazing game for the special needs community or those with learning disorders. Very basic and fun for those types. Glad Bethesda thought about that part of our community and made a game for them.
I found that Pong has more to do than this game. Just can't get into it. Too repetative and no exploring...just copy and paste of the same 5 POI's across all 1000 planets. Boring. Although I'm sure the special needs community would love it.
I explored a random moon orbiting a gas giant, found a frozen mining platform with the crew all dead, did some further investigating and found a bunch of aliens like something out of Starship Troopers and climbing to the top had an epic battle with two giant alien queens.
This is a great part of the game. Encounters like this are very rare, but they are there! giving the game a nice uncertain sense of danger. I am not going to give spoilers, but there are some other alien horrors outside the quests.
Bro I feel you but understand that its just salty people that dont own an xbox. Its the first bethesda game not on playstation since morrowind. People not used to it . Thats why they hate
I'm on the fence with this one a little. Don't get me wrong I am enjoying it but I'm not sure how much longer I will play it actively. BG3 and Hunt Showdown are calling me again. It's difficult to put a finger on why this isn't geling as I thought it would, I find space combat a tedious experience that's probably a "me" issue though with only using an upgraded version of the starter ship. The leveling up of skills is a bit tedious also not sure if it's the way the skill trees are comprised but having to spend a great many points in a tree I have little interest in to get to aspects of ship upgrading and building/base building/weapon and suit upgrading, this grinds a little more than I'd want. Dunno it's a solid 7/10 game for me at the moment.
@WickedScott speaks truth. It's also not because if the salty people, but there are way too much semi-pros mixed with some click bait videos. Then we have ObsidianAnt, who has proven to be an expert on space sims. I loved his advice back when I was learning to play Elite Dangerous.. Obsidian, IF you do see this reply, ON behalf of ALL your fans, WHEN are you going to release your review of the various ships in the shipyards and maybe your own ship designs? ( In your own unique way of course)
Absolutely loving this game. Havent had this much exploring a game since Morrowind. I spent hours getting my ship just right, and having it come out through some tough ship battles was great!
Thanks OA another helpful video for Starfield, can’t get enough of this game, so much to learn and explore!! Absolutely puzzles me that certain outlets scored it 7/10
Another guide suggested going for the traits that added content to the game. Specifically, the Adoring Fan (who doesn't look down on your evil choices), Kid Stuff (for the content with your parents), and Wanted (the armed mercenaries trying to kill you are a good source of guns and credits).
Did a simple freight run to a Planet did some exploring 6 hours later ended up with nearly $80,000 & gained a couple of ranks..... There was 10 different Unknown locations each filled with Enemies & Loot very satisfying indeed.
The best encounter for me is the ship with gravity failing. It’s amazing strategizing and knowing that every 10-15 seconds the gravity will turn on or off. It also uses the gravity to explore parts of the ship that you can’t with gravity enabled. It was honestly amazing, there are also ships that have safes with loot secured by zero G doors, won’t go deep on explanations but good luck when finding these.
Loving Starfield so far, and as yet have not ventured too far from UC and FC space, but am wondering if there are actually any "undiscovered" planets out there. So far every one I've visited has been absolutely littered with abandoned structures. Would like to fell like the first pers3to set foot on a world but not sure the procedural generation will allow that. Hopefully there'll be less and less structures the further out I get but I'm not holding my breath.
@@lillen141 I'm curious as to what games these folks enjoy because if they are this critical of Starfield then every game that has ever been released has a glaring issue they can't look past. Clearly a dramatic response to not liking the game or some such.

Awesome vid. Been playing this since early access and all that time I've been thinking, man I wish I could travel to other planets and land my ship without having to use the map.
Ant, I’ve recently found your channel again & watched a few Starfield videos. I believe that I watched some of your content in years past as well. Just wanted to say that you’re doing a great job. I admire the structure & overall feel of your videos! You’ve earned a sub, my friend. Keep up the great work 😄
Very useful guide; but you missed a detail about the scanning data: when you scan planets and flora/fauna you get special items in your inventory that you can sell for credits, like in Elite Dangerous. And this exploration data can also be used for some quests; like the one you get from the guy on Mars to recruit folks to join his settler program.
Planetary exploration feels underdeveloed, not because it's "empty" (I expected that, it's a more realistic brand of fiction), but because there is no real danger or engagement going on duration that exploration. They included an environmental hazard and suit protection system in the game, but IT DOESN'T DO ANYTHING MEANINGFUL. You get icons and alerts on your hud, your stat screens says your suit protection is depleted (however that works, who knows), but nothing happens to you, ever. There's a chance that once in a blue moon you MAY get an "affliction" if you stay in the planet too long, but this is a very low random chance, and those afflictions are 99% of the time something as stupid as 3% less max HP. Yeah... so, nothing. The system is in the game, it has moving parts, but it does nothing. I don't understand, it's like they put these survival systems in the game but turned them off by decreasing every number by 95% before launch, so they don't do anything.
I think Bethesda just likes to add a bunch of shallow, underdeveloped systems to make it seem like their games are more complex than they are. Afflictions are the very definition of a completely superfluous feature that does not impact gameplay in any way whatsoever. I have never ever taken a cure for an affliction because I often didn’t even notice I had one. Addictions in Fallout actually impact your gameplay in some noticeable and sometimes even fun ways.
Elite Dangerous could have done better than this had the developers wanted to move in that direction, instead of their first-person shooter idea. Roundabout the Horizons era, ED had a bright future, frankly it's sad that it failed, because this (Starfield) is just a cheap illusion of exploration, the planets are pretty ugly to boot
You can up skills to scan plants and animals faster (fewer times), also, you can kill animals to scan. and harvest plants to scan. But anyone that likes to explore should quickly build scanner range skill along with boost pack skill.
This was a great video, I’ll be honest, coming from Fallout76 I’ve been a little disappointed with Starfields exploration and crafting systems and I was starting to just rush the main quest so I could stop playing and move back. But your video has given me some knowledge to keep going and give the game another honest shot. I hope you have a video coming soon on crafting because I find it so clunky!
Yeah your right its amazingly boring. I landed on Earth, no ruins, its only 300 years after our time, but all the cities and towns have gone. I landed in what was the UK. Nothing but only 5 interest points. That is a joke, i got so bored i had to log out, nothing was keeping me in the game. You cannot even look around your cockpit on your ship for god's sake. Its a bad, bad game.
I generally enjoy exploration in this game, despite the repetition and amount of time spent on "unlock the perk-do the research-craft-unlock perk's new level-do all over again" part, because there's still a lot of new things to do and to see here) For 20 hours there were at least 2 highlights in my journey: first, abandoned ship that turns off artificial gravity due to malfunction and second, the fact, that you CAN land on a shore if you choose landing point very close to an ocean
You missed parts of the exploration on the planet. Didn't mention there can be different biomes Not all biomes will have have all flora/fauna/resources.
5:30 it took me 8 hrs somehow to realize, and i went from always needing to use the map, to more organically travel akin to star citizens Quantum drive hops
When you go to the pre-made outposts and stuff on planets that you can click on in orbit, do they tend to be more interesting than the procedural outposts on planet surfaces?

Hrm.... is flicking switches in space more or less amazing to flicking switches on a planet. At the moment I don't feel anything "new" with Starfield, it feels like I've played it before, feels like that was 10 years ago or so.... aka... as yet I feel Starfield hasn't brought anything new to my game playing. Too many odd "cut scenes" and some elements of the interface are odd too.
