Starfield Is Bad... (I'm Done with Bethesda) 

It just works

This game would of been groundbreaking if it came out in 2012. In 2023 - after we've played incredible RPG games like Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring, heck even Cyberpunk - Starfield is just BORING, uninspired and dated.

For me Skyrim was the beginning of the end for Bethesda. If you take a close look at the writing before and after Skyrim, its like it was written by completely different people. They took consequences out of everything, didn't double check their work or even their lore. There were contradictions in the game's lore itself. It was a letdown. Add to the fact that the cities were literally smaller than the ones in the prior game and it was clear they didn't know what to do to keep improving. Skyrim had the advantage of cleaner graphics and a major jump in tech to work with from 2006 to 2012 but aside from that the contribution of bethesda itself was slowly being lost. People really saw it in fallout 4 and fallout 76 but still refused to accept what was happening. Now with Starfield it's just clear. Bethesda is a shell of its former self and isn't really worth the time anymore. There are better games and better companies. Instead of dedicating all these hours to mod a game without any love put into it, the modding community should instead help out games who deserve it.

Starfield is the game our parents looked at while we're playing and said "dont you have better things to do than play video games like children?" Its the most gamey game Ive played recently. It constantly reminds you that you shouldnt immerse yourself, or try to immerse yourself, it constantly reminds how silly and casual of a game it is with its nonsense dialogue, hilarious animation and story writing. Its not even an RPG it claims to be. Its a looter shooter with base building.

I was really surprised to find out that the character creation build had less variability than skyrim It made me really shocked and I had a foreboding that turned out to be true. I had such high hopes for this game, even switched to xbox. lol I had more fun on my ps4 with skyrim, a lot more.

So much potential. So little care.

Bethesda should be ashamed of this, and the employees who were too afraid to tell Todd this game is boring, congrats you kept your job and became a shill, What happened to your passion? Why do you even have the job you have? The people that bought this game and are just coping because they spent $100 or more should also be ashamed for not having conviction to a higher standard for games. This is a disgrace. They smell the roses and sing praises for the colours, all the while cutting their hands on the thorns and not even flinching in pain.

Like how many games have had lockpicking from bethesda. So many. And I never minded it. I HATE IT IN THIS GAME. Its so tedious. I called it a night when I came across another lockbox and just cant be bothered to pick the dang thing. Such a simple thing they managed to make unfun. Edit: and also why I can stand gamers and fanboys. If you dont like the lockpicking, they just say you're bad at it. I've broken 1 pick in 15 hours. I have up to expert skill and never had a problem. Of course I never minded what people called "bad" gunplay in the older titles.

Unfortunately, as great as the modern community is, it doesn’t help us on Xbox. I could not finish this game. I got about 10 hours and 15 hours in and it felt like the worst chore I had to do. If I had to open that inventory management one more time to get rid of this shit so my weight was OK… A big pass

The empty planets definitely seem intentional, the intention being as you stated that modders will fill the blank canvas with content. It's clever, if not despicable, get your own customers to work for you! Wow.

Even though I hate how F4 removed skill system I have to admit that atleast it's perk system is alright, in comparison to Starfield. F4 had skme cool perk ideas with some skill turned into perks. Starfield feels like nearly all perks are just skills, which makes it even more infuriating since why not have skill system back at this point?

Have you played Morrowind? The positive feeling you mentioned having in Skyrim is much stronger in Morrowind, imho.

For context, as I write this, I have starfield alt tabbed in the background. I came to youtube after posting this on Facebook and found your video. Figured id share my status here too. "This is really weird and I dunno how to process this thought so im just going to put it up here. I don't think I like Starfield. It's playable. Far more enjoyable while high. The exploration is all eye candy, there is very little reward that comes from it. So, im pretty take it or leave it. But I get really sad because my housemate was SUPER EXCITED for this game, and she also didnt like it. Hasn't played it since day one when she installed it (and she got it early too). I seem to be taking her disappointment harder than she is. I feel compelled to keep playing the game because I need it to mean something after all that build up. And try as I might, I can't really feel anything for this game. And then I feel really sad. What is wrong with me?" After watching this though, I think I feel a little better about putting it down and just letting it be shit.

Nice vid man I just picked up Cyberpunk again after 3 years of putting it down, when it had its abysmal release, and that game is filled with immersion. The lore and overall feeling of the game is fantastic. Same feeling you get in Mass Effect (Trilogy), Witcher, Skyrim, Fallout, Fable, BG3, several others etc. That game checks all the boxes in my opinion, at least for the most part. Starfield for anyone that’s above the age of 14 is a major let down. The game is literally meant for kids I feel.

The gunplay was boring and the ship building was rather lackluster compared to what they advertised. $70 for this game? Fucking hell no.

I kinda feel sorry for Microsoft having bought this white elephant. The extraordinary thing is the time and money spent on it and this is the sum total. Mediocre. Still at least the next major patch is gonna have a brightness slider and an eat button, yay. For me the whole UI/UX made anything that was interesting so friggin laborious to interact with.

It doesn’t make sense to have so much tied to perks. Stuff like scanning further could be tied to a side quest where you get a unique piece of equipment or something like that.

Bethesda has never actually had to create anything, both Elderscrolls and Fallout are almost 30 years old and by other people. All thesda has ever needed to do was adapt modern mechanics to that. And they usually don't even utilize the mechanics well.

I actually LIKE Starfield, but I get a lot of the people who don't like it. And I think I know why they don't. It has to do with what each person likes about Bethesda games. I put an unhealthy amount of hours into Skyrim and all Fallout games. And now have 40+ hours on Starfield. The key word here is, quite simple really, what people like about these games and that is: Exploration. Here's how a mission goes in Skryim or Fallout: Get the mission, talk to someone, walk to the mission location, on the way find animals, robbers, secrets, buildings, other missions, activities, giants, powers, etc etc etc. Then get to the location, complete the mission either walk back (with some more of all of that in the way) or fast travel. Here's how a mission goes in Starfield: Get the mission, talk to someone, FAST TRAVEL to the mission location, walk 2-5 minutes on an empty procedural generated planet with a couple of hostile aliens, get to the location and complete the mission. Fast travel back. And that's the core of the issue, old Bethesda games create stories with exploration, in Starfield is just menus and fast travel. There are amazing stories, amazing missions, amazing characters, and amazing cities, but all is interconnected by loading screens and menus, and that ruins it. Starfield is a gold ingot thrown into an ocean of shit.

Going from Baldur's Gate 3 to this game... wow, there's no comparison. BG3 was actually immersive. Starfield seems lazy. Carrying capacity limitations are just torture and pointless whole the fast travel probably was an idea for them to keep more casual players happier. Dialogue barely matters. Side quests seem like a distraction and not needed to 'level you up' for the main story. You can just do the main story, with some difficulty, without doing any of the extras. The ship's performance barely matters, so no need to upgrade. Crafting is mainly locked behind skills... overall it's so shallow compared to something like BG3.

All they had to do was make a NASA style version of No Man's Sky w/Ship Building & Skyrim. This game lacks everything modern expectations we come to see as standard in every other space game.

Game crashed when I got on the ship every time and with the freezing and lag that took long enough, refunded and not bothering with Bethesda game anymore, may go replay modded skyrim but that's about it.

The gunplay is the most boring part tbh. Every enemy is just a bullet sponge that staggers when you shoot them and so far I haven't found any guns that have any recoil worth worrying about so it feels a lot like CoD. Seems like all I'm doing is fast traveling around the universe through the mission menu too. It would be nice to actually have to fly the ship somewhere.

We have reinvented the RPG. Now in previous games the dragon born would have to journey into ancient ruins, fighting off the undead that dwell within in order to learn the dragon shouts. Now as a Space... Chosen one you journey to a barren planet and fight off boredom as you enter a chamber thing and reenact Superman 64 - Todd Howard probably

I put around 30 hrs into the game and had quite enough of it. It's not that great of a game and I find it boring and dull, the dialogue is a joke, I wasn't impressed with the character creation either and felt it was lazy. Personally for me, I'm done with XBOX Game Pass as a whole. I have a lot of the games on Steam anyway that's on Game Pass. I see no point paying for a service that's a hit and miss on game releases that one may or may not like. I felt the same way when it comes to the modding community. They'll come in and clean Bethesda's mess of bullshit up for them.

Starfield is OK but yeah... It's more or less different then most People expect... I Love the "Cowboy Bebop" Vibe but it lacks in so much... Even the Music is sometimes the same Music as in Fallout... No Jazz Radio... The Physics is different but who cares for 10000 potatoes inside of a Ship... 😅 Even the Outpost in this Game is Useless u can get Money and Material everywhere... From a RPG perspective its Cool but its always to much of stuff you don't want like the whole Travel System, it keeps you so much in Menus.... I wished they had done it more No Man sky like but hey maybe Fallout 5 will have vehicles finally 😂😂😂😂😂🎉

God, the dialog and voice acting is so damm dry and "fake". NPC,s show no facial movement or tone change in their emotions. Even Outer Worlds did it better.

You made the mistake when you bought the game. That's all that Bethesda needs to be convinced they've done a good enough job and that they can settle for the bare minimum in the future. I so agree... Im 140 hours in and I feel boring as hell.. Useless ship system.. No vehicle on planets to explore.. Useless character creation system that could be not done and spent on other essential things that are so missing.. There is so much things wrong..

I think Fallout 4 will be the last good game they make... I bet Dragon's Dogma 2 will be better than the new Elder Scrolls. Modded Skyrim will probably still win lmao.

I agree I was pretty disappointed with this release, I really didn't like FO4 much and had more fun replaying FO4 than starfield. FO3 & NV and Skyrim are the only good releases.

I actually spent some 60+ hours, hoarding random worthless junk, pickpocketing every NPC (like in every Beth game), mining absolutely worthless resources, roaming worthless empty planets, killing the same pirates in the same generic building again and again, listening Sarah yapping about who cares what and doing tedious boring quests designed by 3 years old kids (or AI). Yeah, I tried... enduring and hoping there will be something better eventually. I admit my mistake not uninstalling it after 60 minutes. All Beth games are overrated, but at least they were fun. Not SF. If some small studio made this no one would even bother but 'Hey it's Skyrim in Space'! Unfortunately, it's not. Repetitive, generic, dull, unstimulating, uncreative, lame obsolete design, lame lore, lame generic factions, lame generic enemies, lame combat, lame dialogue, lame companions and NPCs in general, bad graphics, bad UI, endless loading screens and tons of bugs (especially with ships). Nothing is interesting, especially not the main quest. Seriously, I can't understand how people can defend this cr4p in 2023. 4/10

Problem is that modders cannot fix the engine, they won't be able to create open world space for ships to traverse, or atmospheric flight, or land vehicles that don't lurch everytime a cell needs to load or decent NPC animation. At best they can overhaul the skill systems and suit / weapon modding... Admittedly modders did fix the missing DLSS and broken UI within days, then enemy AI / sneaking gameplay a fews day later but the game is broken at a fundamental level. Railroaded no-choices and locked in robotic NPC speech ala Oblivion. Copy pasted bases and caves (x5) across the entire game universe. It really feels like they lost their best programmers since Fallout 4 (they never had good writers after Skyrim) and it really feels like this was designed by committee, utterly soulless!

As someone who played cyberpunk since launch. I'm not impressed with Starfield's gun play. There's really nothing to it... Yeah you have laser and particle beams, but what is different with those from ballistic guns? What makes them different aside from it spewing a different animation? Only the EM gun is different but nobody uses that because you can just kill them instead of stun... Might as well make everything ballistic and use only 3 different Ammo type. Nothing will change.

In a way I’m not too bummed that Starfield is bad because I’ve just started a new heavily modded Skyrim playthrough and I’m having loads of fun with that. Played Starfield for a couple of days and it just leaves me cold, like, I feel nothing 🤷‍♀️ Long live Skyrim!

The biggest difference between Skyrim and even Fallout 4 vs Starfield or even ES:VI is that no one cares anymore. Bethesda squandered every ounce of goodwill they built up and I doubt they'll ever earn it back. Decades of complacency created this, and years of greed exacerbated it. Let's face it, no one really gives a shit. Modders aren't going to save Starfield when they can mod for BG3, Age of Wonders 4, and other good Indie titles from companies that still give a shit about their fans. It's over.

I think what we're realizing slowly but surely is that Bethesda is a premiere game company of an era, and that era is now in the past.

Thank you!! Role playing to me, is not checking marks, buying perks... that is the smallest 'part' of the character I am playing. It is how you interact with the world and how your interactions are reflected back in the world and with positive or negative consequences.

Yeah this game has really crystallized for me the fact that having such a strong modding community is both a blessing and a curse. The blessing is obvious. Lots of mods means at least some of them will be amazing and really add a whole new dimension to the game. But the curse is that it's becoming more and more clear with each new release that Bethesda themselves are using that community as a crutch and as a source of unpaid labor to finish their game for them so that they don't have to bother. Almost everything in this game feels like it's close to being good but not there yet. Everything gives the feeling "well, I'm sure mods can finish this." Missing graphics settings, poor optimization, boring exploration, terrible melee combat, terrible enemy AI, most of the enemies being the same thing over and over again, even habitable worlds feeling like they're all mostly the same, the tedious main quest that's just a series of fetch quests, the locations you go to in said fetch quests being just a single room with the exact same "puzzle" where you literally jump through hoops every time instead of being found at the end of explorable dungeons. All of this is stuff that is BETHESDA'S job to finish and put in the game. This kind of shit should not be delegated to modders. The fact that all of this and more are in the "well, modders can fix that" category is fucked up. Bethesda clearly expects the fans to do thousands of hours of cumulative labor for free to fix their game because they weren't willing to spend the resources and time to do it themselves. Lazy and despicable especially considering the large price tag for the game.

I’ll always love Skyrim, Oblivion and a few of the Fallouts. But, Bethesda and Todd Howard are full of Snake oil! LoL! I’m happy I didn’t waste my money on Fallout 76 and Starfield!

I felt this game is overhyped. I was expecting Skyrim in space but this game is vastly empty. Fallout and Elder Scroll does more with their smaller maps. "Exploring" is boring. I put quotes because each planet/moon is just a box with point of interest where you get loot and grind. Enemy AI are so bad that when get to finally see some action it is boring. Make absolute no sense not to put vehicles. On a good note, this game is way more polished than most Bethesda game.

"broughten" isn't a word in English. btw, you nailed it. everything you say is exactly the way I felt. just finished the main story of Starfield. A few hours in, i found myself setting the difficulty to 'very easy' just to get it over with. This game is about as much fun as standing in line at Disney Land, you just want it to be over, or for something to happen.

I didnt buy it because i knew the mod community was going to need 100x passes. Ill buy it on a deep discount(sub 30 buck), when i can get a complete experience from the mods. Why pay bethesda full price for a game im going to have to mod anyways?

My thoughts exactly. While I enjoy the game for what it's worth, it's just an ok game. It doesn't feel like a huge leap from Skyrim. It's not the the space epic I expected it to be. It's just a spaced themed Bethesda game. Didn't follow the hype but I still expected more.

the skills system could be much better if ranking up the skill was only done by completing the challenge. Ranking up a skill in this game is too much investment, you've got to invest time to do the challenge and invest a point that took forever to gain because leveling up your character takes forever in Starfield.

I feel bad that the modders have to fix everything, while the developers take peoples' money with a crappy product...

When I heard Snake-oil salesman Todd Howard mention in an interview the other week that they're (of course, what a surprise) sticking with the gamebyro/creation engine for Elder Scrolls 6 I knew enough is enough. I didn't pre-order this game because I'm sick of their lack of innovation and playing games that feel like they're 10 years old at launch. By the time ES6 comes out, God knows how much further behind the times it will be compared to other open world RPGs.

The game was fine. But for a Bethesda title, I was extremely disappointed. I couldn't wait for it to be over. I am now playing thought the Mass Effect Trilogy and holy shit, these are some really good space RPG games. Amazing attention to detail with decision making. And these games are 10-15 years old!
