Starfield is what you get from continuously lowering the average IQ of a dev team over the course of two decades.

Starfield feels like it was explicitly designed around the mantra "modders will do it later". See those vast wastelands that encompass 95% of the game? Modders will fill all that space out later. Bare-bones, copy-pasted quests? Modders will flesh them out later. Meaningless factions? Modders. Basic QoL options? Modders. This entire game is Bethesda throwing their hands up in the air and admitting that anyone with a lick of talent or vision at the company left years ago and that the people on payroll now are less competent than Moe Modder who does their job better than them in his spare time.

2016's No Man's Sky let you take a walk on a planet, board your ship, go out of atmosphere and deep in the space, reenter the atmosphere of another planet, land on it, all without a single loading screen. Starfield is like a microcosm of what all modern big games are like. Every big game feels bland, inoffensive, tasteless, soulless. Nowadays I simply play older games, smaller niche games and some indies. My brain naturally filters out all the AAA gaming media and 'reviewers' by now because I just know nothing out there is worth it and the vast majority of it is shills getting paid to deceive you (sometimes they aren't even getting paid, they are too psychologically attached to their favorite companies which might be worse). It's depressing.

I think the oddest part of the whole not being able to take out "essential NPCs" was a seriously missed opportunity in this game because *spoilers ahead* you get to jump to a parallel universe with your character and try again. This would be the perfect situation to allow a more open ended gaming experience.

This is the game where Bethesda writers truly gave up. They didn't even bother this time around. There are questlines in Starfield that make Skyrim's Theives Guild look good by comparison. Everything is just dull and lazy.

the "essential characters" thing is really abused in Starfield. Its like when the DM basically says that an NPC is going to flip on you, and when you and the party retaliate and try to kill him, the DM says: "no, no guys please, he's gonna important, you can't kill him." Hell, the NPC doesn't even have to be antagonistic, the DM just wants you to basically not kill anyone that is named. I hate it.

Remember, this is Todd Howard's dream game. This is the game Todd had (allegedly) wanted to make since before Oblivion. Let that sink in.

Does Bethesda just not know how to write villains? Truly, of all the disappointments Synth mentions, this is the biggest one for me. These villains are... awful. Like, pathetically bad. Pirates that don't loot and plunder? Gangsters that don't break the law? "I was alive the whole time and orchestrating everything from prison" with no effort to explain how any of that was possible? Space slug diabolus ex machina? Can Bethesda just not write a compelling villain? One with gravitas? One who exploits human weakness for personal gain? One with a motivation more complex than "the good guys say he's bad, so he's bad?" This is writing I would expect from amateurs. Not a big video game publisher with hundreds of millions of dollars of budget.

These people are the definition of simulacra in their writing. All their experiences are derived from media and not real life. The knowledge base being reddit and marvel movies.

I have for a long time had the opinion that a lot of games are just the same, have the same feel, same concept, same mechanics etc and themes. So many shooters etc are just shit in my opinion. They demand a lot from your computer, they take a lot of spaces, they are expensive, highly inefficient and competitive. It’s just a perfect for the normal idiot consumer that has no idea about what good quality games are.

It's like a sanitized, Disney-fied, boring mess that tries to appeal to a mass braindead audience. Story as old as time. Everything from Movies to Las Vegas goes this route and no one ever learns the lesson. It's so weird.

It's always something I found absolutely astonishing. Bethesda manages to create a game with the highest amount of obnoxious, annoying and repulsive NPCs. And then make them "unkillable". Not because they are overpowered. They just "fall" to the ground unconcious. Adding even more to the insult. And with each game they seem to make more and more NPCs unkillable.

Starfield seriously makes me think that modern game writers should've gone on strike as well. It's not like their absence would've detracted from the game.

The greatest trick Todd ever pulled was convincing the world his games are better than they actually are.

How can a game with such a long development be so undercooked?

My friend was a play tester for this game and he wound up finding the most bugs on his team for this game. I think he told me he found about 2000 bugs/things that needed to be fixed before the game released. The worst part is that he wasn't even on the Starfield play test team for very long, he got transferred 6 months before the game came out.

Right out the gate when the NPCs asked me what happened when I touched the artifact I said I don't remember anything then then the Barrett dude ask me if I saw anything I said no and then proceeded to tell me I had to go see people to help me understand the visions and music I saw and heard. I LITERALLY SAID I DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING!

Todd is a genius he makes his sheepeople fix the game for him while he earns unlimited money.

My Slob List with 48h in: No Vats - No Gore - No diving - Can't open Doors, defuse Mines, use Items... when in Scan Mode - Can't control jump height. NPCs can do that. A Charge up Meter is really needed on some Moons, or you fly off like a Rocket - Boost Packs not really suitable ever/meaning that you need different kinds of Boosters for different Situations but also you need Resistances against Korrosion, Air, Radiation, Bio, and somewhat level conforming Laser, EMP, Bullet Resistance = you need 12+ Boost Packs - Crafting and Building Copy Paste from FO4 but with worse placement control - Awful Controls overall. The game works on GamePad but you need your whole Keyboard if you choose to play on the Keyboard. Make ready to rebind 50 Keys and ignore Conflicts - Very few and lackluster Feats - You should start with level one on each Skill - Skills need to be way more "Exotic". ATM they are mostly "more DMG, can Craft, can buy, can fly - Item Feats are mostly useless and are Copy Paste from FO4 - Skill progression is mostly forgettable and unimaginative - EXP from discovering, Hacking, building, crafting is nearly not existent - Item Notifications gone after 1.5sec = can't check Stats = open Inventory - Carry Capacity sucks - You can't mark individual Items to look/track for - You can't undo all tracking Items - Inventory Menu sucks! StarUI Mod needed = modding mandatory or wasting hours unnecessarily - Can't use Cure Object in Affliction Screen. Again StarUI Mandatory - Not showing "Weather(Corrosion/Radiation...)" I get 5 new Quests when running around doing one Quest. I don't know how I got the Quests. I don't know who the Quests are from. I have no connection to them. - Finding Quests is a Nightmare. They need to be Structured much better. Time when Quest received/Location of Quest Giver/Nearby Quests/Location of Quest/Radiant Quest... - Still can't go from Sneak to normal Mode whilst doing any other action / meaning Stealth play feels Crap. Sneak to someone with a Melee Weapon, hit them 1 time, wait for Animation to finish, press "Crouch" Key, wait for your Character to stand up, engage in Comabt. 1995... 19 F*cking 95!!! - I have been playing the Game for 50 hours now and am Level 25 and I still find the same Fire Axe I found on Level 3 over and over 21 DMG - When on the Map Screen, there has to be a Warning that you can not travel at this moment - I am SEETHING because I activated a Mission but the Game decided to not show me that Mission at all, but two other Missions I do not want to do - I decided to do one of the Missions to see what happens... I now have FOUR Map markers. WTF! And I am not allowed to activate even two Missions - Buy Back Disabled as soon as you leave Shopping Window - List Updated :)

If the "center" of your ship is empty space because you add a large L bracket of struts to the top of your ship, most enemies can't hit you in space combat. It just works.

Starfield has none of the cool stuff from Fallout because Fallout lore wasn't written by Bugthesda, it was written by the people at Black Isle Studios. The guys who wrote the Elder Scrolls lore left Bethesda ages ago. From then on, Bethesda has been living off their work and perverting it to suit their needs, just look at Fallout's Jet and the super mutants. Bugthesda in its current state can't write original, structured and interesting lore, nor can they make developed, interesting and nuanced NPCs. The best their writers can come up with are meme characters like Preston Garvey and linear, nonsensical main storylines that require you to ask no questions because any amount of scrutiny makes their entire story collapse.

How easy it is for so many people to get dragged by the overton window into defending absolutely moronic bs is one hell of a black pill, doubly so when you realise it applies to much more than just politics.

Saying Starfield is "Cyberpunk all over again" is an insult to Cyberpunk. I played Cyberpunk on release, and while it had tons of technical problems it had heart and soul, something Starfield completely lacks and can never acquire.

Yesterday I decided to have another try at this game. I found myself back in some generic mining camp, and there were posters on the wall. Even the posters were generic. One just said "Football" with a picture of football. That's what really pushed me over the edge, because they werent even trying to make the "universe" they "crafted" feel lived in. It felt like I was living in a stock photo.

Considering you can NG+ they really should be more flexible in letting you kill named NPCs. In Morrowind they would let you kill essential NPCs but give you a warning that it was one so you might want to revert.

To put into perspective the character writing: Imagine if the next Mass Effect had Conrad Verner return for a small reference / joke. Now imagine if that was the best character in the game.
