Gopher, as someone who has watched your content since the Fallout 3 modding days, I just wanted to say how great it is to see you back in the groove of putting out regular modding videos/guides for a BGS game. I haven’t even bought Starfield yet and I’ve still been watching these videos in preparation for when I do. Can really hear the enthusiasm coming through in your voice!
Couldn’t agree more, loving the lets olay and I can’t wait for the starfield mod spotlight series im expecting to see become common as more mods get made
Man, the nostalgia. Like everyone else commenting, I discovered your channel in 2013, wanting to learn how to mod Skyrim LE while NMM was the only official mod manager. 17 years old at the time, now 10 years later, feeling like a kid once again. Thankyou for the decade of fun and the decades to come Gopher. You are loved and appreciated!
Gopher, your videos about how to install the Skyrim script extender (and by extension the Nexus mod manager along with mods, and so on) were how I found your channel in 2013, when I’d just moved into my student dorm room and decided to see what Skyrim was like on the PC compared to how I’d played it at first (on the Xbox 360, vanilla, on an old “fatscreen” TV that I couldn’t read most of the in-game text on). It’s been literally 10 years now, and I thank you for all you’ve done before and everything you’ll keep doing from now. Sorry for a long and perhaps a bit sentimental comment, but I had to say it.
Can't believe the journey the Script Extender team has had throughout the years. Very dedicated people. A side note for viewers: Like any other Script Extender, SFSE is presumably also version dependent. So if the game gets an update, SFSE should also receive an update to run and by extension run the mods that depend on it.
Gopher releases useful SFSE video as always its a banger! Bethesda: Gonna update the game now. Gopher: "Why do you make my life harder" Love your content! Been watching since New Vegas.
I just love Space Stiv. If you ever "remake" him in Starfield, you can name his ship Shiv (a long, sleek ship, fit for fighting and pirating), so it'll be Stiv's Shiv
Nice and straightforward tutorial, kudos! 👌 One suggestion, if you ever decide to update the video or make another version of it: I'd show how one can quickly check whether SFSE has indeed loaded by going into the ingame settings menu and seeing "SFSE" (along with its version) in the bottom left.
Well - We are blessed these days with having a mod manager at all... I still cam remember the days we had to install all mods by hand, and then sorting out the load order because LOOT was also not available. Fun times solving all those great conflicts mods had with each other. It was also a fun time, because you could also see those mod organizers evolve and grow. And of course LOOT was a godsend, albeit not very reliable or correct in the early first version days. We have come a long way since then...😉
ALSO something the gopher neglected to mention....IF for some reason if a few days/weeks/months the script extender doesn't run any more either there is a notification about it or not, that is NOT the SFSE fault but Bethesda's, they probably released an update for the game, be patient for a few days at the most, the team that updates the script extender is FAST at this..... have fun :)
@@K_1_T_S_U_N_E no, the mistake actually was writing bethesda's instead of steam's, for forcing updates down our throats either we want them or not....because as far as i know, nobody is that stupid to want a bethesda update the moment they see it, they tend to destroy more stuff than they fix
The release of this game and its succeeding mod support is inspiring. I thoroughly enjoy this game and look forward to seeing what the community does.🎉
I was wondering about this. Seemed like the most natural and easy launch option (w/ no desktop clutter), but figured there must be a reason why not the go-to.
After 1500 hours of FO4 ( 40 hours gameplay, 1460 hours of modding ) i`m very excited . Thanks for all of your help and sharing your knowledge. Sorry, but english is not my native language. Greetings from the german mod community (the boomers, of course)
I honestly feel naked without the SE installed; but I'll have to wait till I get it on steam. For now I'm messing around with the gamepass version, so am limited to texture replacers, tweaks, reshade and the dlss mod
He has. In a Skyrim extension mod he is doing the narrative (insanity Claus-a christmas quest) and someone used a few dozen of his book readings as additional content for the mod „Audio books of Skyrim“.
Hi Gopher! Love your videos, and I'm happy to see you (and the Script Extender team) back in action! One thing I would like to know is how to check if the script extender is working properly - whether that be an entered command at the main menu or otherwise Thanks!
The Silverlock peoples' mods are one of the few mods I'd actually get paid to get access to, just because they've been so solid for so long! I'm just glad that they aren't like that, because I don't think I'd tried SKSE back in the day, if they had (well, that's a lie, back in the day Skyrim was more or less unplayable without SKSE, SKYUI and fixing the X, Y discrepancy, for the mouse, in the .ini-file).
Does the SFSE_Loader.exe pass on command line arguments to the starfield.exe ? I Ask because there are a couple I've heard help Starfield performance "-UseAllAvailableCores" and, if you have sufficient RAM/VRAM I ran across another to disable texture streaming (Which I can't find again right now, unfortunately). I'd love to do true A/B testing with the switches with all my mods, but SFSE is already loading a few, and if these help performance, I'd like to continue to use them with SFSE.
I have tried installing SFSE via Vortex, and it got put into an AppData Roaming folder, therefore not installing into the game folder. Tired changing the SFSE mod type to engine insertion type, but that did nothing. I have it working via old school install, but would like to have the update features that come with using Vortex. Any ideas?
running thru vortex with it set t primary "cant find starfield.exe" when i run sfse loader directly it starts on steam, then immediatly stops. Yes everything is in the right place...
Love the attempt to right click the exe and Windows just decides "huh? you wanted to click that? nah." This has been a problem since Vista and still trips me up to this day. M$ never improves Windows anymore; just the opposite.
This might get some attention, so I might post it here as well: So... I tried to install it several Times. The CMD Windows pops up and closes immediately again and the game doesn't start. - Files are in the proper place. - My antivirus (Bitdefender Internet Security) isn't freaking out so I don't think it's that. I installed it via Hand the first time and now through Vortex. Still the same: CMD Windows pops up for half a second and nothing happens. Has anyone any Idea what I am doing wrong?
I don't know why M&K+Controller doesn't work default for you with Starfield, it does for me. Maybe its because I'm using an Elite 2 through a wired connection? Wooting being 3rd Party software might work less well than a Microsoft product.
So many tutorials on how to install script extender. But I can't find any tutorials on how to use script extenders to actually make proper mods. I suppose this will be more so when the CK comes out for Starfield.
Making Script Extender plugins requires proficiency in C++ and whatever scripting language used in the game in question. There are some tutorials on creating such plugins, but you can also find communities of like minded individuals in the various discord communities that have been built up around BGS modding. If you have the C++ knowledge, you can probably pick up the rest from there.
They are not really mods yet, a ton of BAT files, a ton of reshades, some retextures, replacers, presets, savegames and INI tweaks. The UI mods are the only "real" mods so far untill the creation kit is released.
Welcome to the channel and indeed welcome to the modding community. Yeah, the game is great, but that isn't why there are so many mods on release. Mod makers, mod tool creators, and the mod users themselves are just more geared up to mod BGS games than ever before. Even if the game were terrible, there'd be tons of mods all ready anyway. It's what the modding community does :)
@@GophersVids what did you even say in that paragraph? That modders ‘make things better’? A great game don’t need any mods…. You shouldn’t have abandoned Tale of Two Wastelands for Clownfield
@@jacobc8019 *"what did you even say in that paragraph? That modders ‘make things better’?"* - Yes, I guess. *"A great game don’t need any mods"* - No, of course not. I'm not claiming that Starfield 'needs' mods. But great games can still benefit from mods. Sometimes to make them better, and sometimes just to make them different. *"You shouldn’t have abandoned Tale of Two Wastelands for Clownfield"* - I haven't abandoned TTW. I will return to it at some point. And 'Clownfield'? OK, so that's where we're at is it? Well I'm afraid you're just in the wrong place by the looks of things. My channel is pretty much built upon BGS games. I enjoy them, and I'm enjoying Starfield. So it's going to be a major part of the channel for the next few years.
You know I watched your videos on installing vortex and sfse. I did it with fallout 4 and skyrim in NMM it worked great. But Vortex will not work at all I cannot get a single mod to work with it and I dont know what to do anymore. I literally uninstalled and deleted vortex and starfield and did it fresh following the directions. I am lost and so frustrated at this point.
I had many problems with the game crashing until I started running under compatibility mode, does that work with the script extender and how do I enable this?
can someone help. my sfse is trying to run the game a max settings and a error pops up and says my graphics dont meet requirements.. how would i make a custom ini for it to read?
Tried to run the game through vortex but it just black screens for a second and cancels, I have steam open on side and can see a application starts but then it just goes away and the play button on steam is available again Aswell, running through vortex isn’t working for some reason
Try running it from the game folder, where the executable for the script extender is at. If it works, send it to desktop (shortcut) and only run the game from there. Then make sure Vortex is finding the correct executable in the game folder, by checking the extension from the dashboard.👌
This is not true at all. There are already a couple dozen mods that require SFSE to function properly, including one of the most downloaded mods "Baka Achievement Enabler", among others.
Very wrong. There are already quite a lot of mods that require it. I'm using two of them myself, and I'm considering another right now. And I currently have a very lightly modded game.
I think for now Vortex will be the main focus for Gopher. Those files not sitting in the data folder can also be managed perfectly by Vortex. Just watch the tutorial Gopher made a while back to see how that works.
@@jclosed2516 Thank you. I realized, after commenting, that not much has changed since Skyrim days. Watched the old MO tutorial vids for a refresher course. Got Mod Organizer 2 beta6 and Root Builder works perfectly for SFSE and root script mods. Only thing I can't get working is DLSS but that's just the version update so I'll wait for the reshade update. MO is definitely far superior and clearer in what it's doing than vortex IMO. I'm glad I took the time.
It seems like the script extender works with hardcoded memory locations specific to steam exe. I don't think there are any technical limitations to such functionality being added to gamepass folder. I respect Ian a lot but I think they sometimes spread wrong information about the reason for microsoft version's incompatibility. It used to be a thing years ago, but today publishers have a lot of control over giving the user the directory and exe access Tl;Dr - The reason is specific to sfse and not something related to the platform this time
I'm running the Gamepass version and you still don't have full access, script extender or not. Various items will give you the "access denied" error, so restrictions are very likely to be on the Microsoft side.
Vortex is the most easy one for starters. Especially because Vortex and Nexus are linked by default (Yes I know you can do the same with MO2). Strange as it may sound for people completely used to MO2, the interface and setup can be a bit intimidating for people that have no idea how to mod. A lot of processes (like LOOT) are already present and running "under the hood" in Vortex and do not need any user interaction. You are right that MO2 can be the more powerful one, but at the same time that power can wreck havoc when used in the wrong way. And especially beginners can loose track and do things that are irreversible, leading to restarting the whole procedure again. I think Vortex it the best way to start, and after understanding the mod process better, it's time to dive in the more powerful MO2.
I don't "advertise" mod managers :) I just use Vortex because it's the most commonly used mod manager and the easiest for beginner's to pick up. Thus it's the one best used when making tutorial type videos.
How do I get it to run from the Steam library without adding it as a non-steam game? I occasionally remote play Starfield to my Steam Deck.. but would like everything to be associated with Starfield, game hours etc. edit: Turns out I this is working. In Starfield's launch options paste in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Starfield\sfse_loader.exe" -- %COMMAND%
Hopefully once official mod tools and the creation kit is released by Microsoft and Bethesda Microsoft will change whatever problem doesn't allow the script extender to be used on the Microsoft store version
The latest update has now caused my PC to flag the download as a virus, does anybody know a fix for this without having to keep real time protection off?
Dang Microsoft. At least I'm just on the Game Pass version and there's a save file converter. Not that there's anything I want mod-wise that needs scripts yet. Other people are not so lucky.
Gopher - thanks, as always! Why is it Steam only and why is it likely not going to change? I don't intend to buy Starfield again after getting it early on Game Pass?
Well there's a chance it might change IF the workaround I've seen suggested works. BUT the mod author has said it will likely be some time before such a version is released, IF it gets released. So there's hope, but you will need to be patient.
Do we know if the newer version of the Creation Engine will still have the standard issue of a game change requiring a short wait for a script extender update? I view this as completely acceptable, but I wondered if anything may have been found in Creation Engine to make that smoother? Cheers!
...so i've been using script extenders wrong all my life... i always boot from steam... not the exe.... would explain why my skyrim and fallout games only half work...
Yep - The Steam .exe bypasses the script extender. A lot of mods will not function well (if at all) if you start from Steam, because the script extender is not running at all...
I did exactly your instructions, it says enabled on the mods I installed. I started the game from the shortcut.loader but game has not changed. It started from the shortcut but game seems normal. Any suggestions. Thanks
My understanding is that some (Nexus) mods require installing and running with Vortex. At the end where you told Vortex to run SF via the SE exe, does this satisfy those requirements too?
I don't think there are any mods that require you to install or run them through Vortex (or any other Mod Manager). But any mods you install through Vortex (or any other Mod Manager) will run just fine if you run the game via the sfse_loader.exe file directly, OR through Vortex. It should all work regardless of how you run the script extender :)
hey, i was thinking how actually the game could be moded at some point with those old scholl mods that adds location ..with that solar systm imagin the posibilities. But then i remembered that the words are generated randomly so i guess its makes those kind of mods impossible to exist in starfield right?
No way of knowing yet but since not all places are generated randomly, all the main locations, we can assume it's possible to create new systems and planets that are "fixed". There was a rumor people were already planning to build a Elder Scrolls and Fallout planet.
No. It's usually mods that include esp, esm or esl files that do that. Also, there are a few mods to enable achievements whilst using mods and console commands. One of them even uses this Script Extender to work :)
I use it on rare occassions where I need to do something odd and specifically prevented in Vortex. Outside of that, I've just been using Vortex mostly.
