While playing No Man's Sky... I was repairing one of the frigates in my fleet, and had a misadventure where I fell over the side and landed on my capital ship. I was loosing life support fast, so I did the only thing I could think to do. Jumped over the side of the capital ship toward the planet it was currently orbiting. I had to pop life support packs like crazy to stay alive while I made my decent, and eventually got into the atmosphere (so my life support stopped draining) and was able to jet pack just before hitting the ground and thus surviving. I was then able to call my ship down and fly it back to my capital ship. Can you do that in Starfield?

Gotta watch out when repairing those fuel tanker support frigates especially. Climbing the ladder to each tower is a little lengthy, but jetpacking from one platform to the next to save maybe 20 seconds of climbing can get a little too exciting! One wrong step and... I didn't make it to the nearest planet though... 😵💀

NMS was built by an indie team of 15 people. Starfield was built by a multi-billion dollar company. Bethesda could have taken the exploration and freedom of NMS and added the RPG storyline elements they are known for. They could have done it in Bethesda's visual style. Instead they give you a linear story experience with side quests. No real exploration--despite what people claim. Ships are actually worthless and basically only good for RU-vidr screenshots. If you don't happen to enjoy the writing or storyline that's just too damn bad because without it you have nothing.

Except they couldn't have done that, it's probably not possible on a technical level. NMS starts to experience performance issues even when in small settlements containing a dozen buildings. There's no way a game that runs that way could accommodate for cities like New Atlantis wih hundreds of NPCs walking around.
@braylonmaverick2617

Starfield is a decent game, but it is nothing more than a linear cardboard cutout of every other Bethesda game. Ship-building, while at first may be enjoyable, becomes somewhat pointless, being only used for mediocre space combat and tangible item storage. Traveling is limited, and the terrain tiles are not continuous. Combat is simply average FPS fodder. Roleplaying (which is done well) is up to the usual Bethesda standards, but then you get the same standard in FO4, so you really aren't seeing anything new. Yet, again, Starfield is a decent game, and it will appeal to some, but for many it will be only a game that they enjoy for a short period of time before moving on.

I am a new No Man's Sky player. It was only recently I picked up this game after I found that Starfield was limiting. I expected to be amazed, and amazed I was. The deep sense of exploration that's not present in Starfield is here. The spiritual themes, and sense of wonder as you learn words to communicate with the people, the quest to survive and become bigger - these things matter in No Man's Sky. And the sense of exploration is much better here.

Agreed - I’m really pissed about the whole exclusivity between companies thing. After all the bad press No man sky had on release I hard avoided it. Until now. No man sky is absolutely fantastic and is only going to get better. Nms is such a huge concept. Played the story now I’m just doing side missions and exploring- ALOT. Frigate gameplay is good too. Safe journey traveller. ✌️
@Ribcut
@Ribcut 9 месяцев назад
The exploration is there, but everything else isn't. You're conveniently ignoring what makes Starfield a good game, which is story rich RPG elements. Space was the backdrop, not the focus. No Man's Sky is a resource farming simulator. The game has always felt soulless.
@efxnews4776
@efxnews4776 9 месяцев назад
@@Ribcut You know what games make better the rpg elements than Starfield? MASS EFFECT. Starfield manages to be even WORST than ME Andromeda wich is by far the worst game of the whole ME franchise. And even so, Starfield is more boring than, ANDROMEDA. Also, i do not think that NMS would be a better game by adding RPG elements to their gameplay, in fact NMS gameplay loop (about grinding money, tech and elements), is actually a BETTER system for games about space exploration, for the outdated system of open world Bethesda rpg, hell Bethesda itself really add a lot of crafting to Starfield, it was trying so bad to emulate NMS in this regard, that they lose focus on what is more important wich is the story itself! First of all the story in Starfield sucks! Theres not a SINGLE ALIEN CIVILIZATION in a game about space EXPLORATION! In ME Andromeda, the worst game of the Mass Effect franchise, has at least 2 alien civilizations! So when you came to me, and tell me that Starfield has RPG elements that NMS doesn't have i wonder if this whole stuff about RPG elements isn't just bloated bs in gaming! NMS doesn't need an RPG system, it already has a more logical and realistic system than Starfield rpg elements... what NMS actually needs is to make the story in the game better, add some choice based dialogues, and some more in dept background about the player avatar, also add some more flavor to the alien races (even X4 does this better than NMS, with all alien intrigues and conflicts) This may be controversial, but i do think that Hello games should add a human faction to the game, i know it is in a different galaxy and such, but make an interesting story about how humans arrived in the Euclid galaxy, at least so players can choose a face for their characters, if we don't want to be aliens or robots.

You left out one of the most important differences. In NMS you're actually flying your ship around. In Starfield, you just teleport (fast travel) everywhere and encounter loading screen after loading screen. Both games have their strengths and weaknesses but this difference to me is one of the most defining features that distinguishes the two experiences each game offers.

Starfield is limited, where as NMS is not. With Starfield, although you technically can look at a planet in the sky and fly there, the process doesn't make you feel like you are doing that. You enter your ship, go towards the front cabin, and from there you are greeted with cutscenes and loading screens until you are out in space. With NMS, you can look at a planet in the sky, jump into your ship, and fly there. Hyperdriving in Starfield leads to more cutscenes and loading screen. In NMS, you are given an animated loading screen until reaching the next system. In Starfield, you are limited with how far you can travel (at least on foot, which is the only way you can cross terrain). Once you arrive at a "boundary wall", you are prevented from going any further. You have to return to your ship, go through all the cutscenes and loading screen to take off, enter space again and choose the terrain passed the "boundary wall", and then go through all the cutscenes and loading screen to land again (and the terrain is not continuous, meaning that a mountain that was there previously will not be shown in the new terrain tile). In NMS, you can walk or fly anywhere on a planet's surface. There are other examples, but I believe that the point is made. Starfield is simply an RPG with a "space" backdrop (or actually, it is a FPS with RPG elements that has a "space" backdrop). Starfield is a decent game, but it was overhyped and fell far short of that hype. Starfield was not "ground-breaking" as Bethesda claimed. NMS, at least at the time of its release, was ground-breaking (although, upon its release, fell short in many ways until Hello Games corrected their mistakes). There is nothing wrong with enjoying Starfield, for as I stated, it is a decent game. But it is nothing more than that. It is a cardboard cutout of every other Bethesda game. After 7 years, NMS continues to be a top-selling game. Starfield will be on sale at 75% off retail price in 6 months. Additional content (DLCs) will be nothing more than other missions, and you'll have to pay for them. NMS has given all its additional content for free. Although I may be wrong, I don't believe that Starfield will have the same longevity. Once people complete all of their missions in Starfield, they will simply move on to the next game.

I personally insulted how bad Bethesda is ripping everyone off, and attacking those who don't like it... seem to have paid off half the people reviewing it... making excuse like "modders will fix that " (for free whilst Bethesda still sells a copy thanks to mod community). whilst NMS YES started BAD, but as you said NEW. And listened, fix things, add content for FREE, MADE these youtubers.. who seem to be abandoning it for Starfield and praising it more, WHILST BEING SHAT ON.. Nah ship building is a bad idea just add little details/ornaments you could put on or maybe change the engine but not completely the whole ship. No point using monolith to find coordinates of people’s cool ships they found. I don’t know but I feel like it would take out some content in the game. The enthusiasm for Starfield will end in about 6 to 8 months. Once you see it go on sale in the Microsoft/Xbox store (which will happen in about 3 to 6 months), you'll know that it has lost a good portion of its momentum. Interest in the game might spike momentarily when the obligatory Bethesda DLCs are released (along with the patches for those DLCs), but that said interest will soon drain away. Although I could be wrong, Starfield is not a game that players will be playing 5, 7, or 10 years from now. It might not even hold interest after 2 years.

I've played a shit ton of NMS and quite a bit of Starfield. Love them both, but for different reasons. I thought Starfield would replace NMS for me but that would be like saying I replaced Call of Duty with BOTW/TOtK. Starfield is much more streamlined and story based, which it does very well, but it doesn't hit the mark on its exploration. NMS is a vast and limitless game that immerses you into feeling the sense of being a true space explorer, albeit with lackluster story beats and missions that aren't nearly as emotionally effective as Starfield's. Since there's no instant teleportation from one planet to another in NMS (unless you use teleporters, of course), players experience a lot more dynamic and varied activities. While Starfield does have these activities as well, they do feel quite a bit less impactful and meaningful, simply because the game isn't designed around these random encounters like NMS is. Both games can learn from one another, but for Bethesda's case they did have those learning blocks to work with and fumbled, imo. If NMS adds ship building and maybe a bit more fluid on-foot combat, it might just be the perfect space game. On the contrary, if Bethesda had added seamless space/planet travel and actual reason to indulge in space flight, it would have been the perfect space game. Here's hoping Starfield's modding tools will give modders the ability to make Starfield absolutely insane, which I'm sure will happen.

Judging by this statement it seems like you favor starfield more than NMS. The only reason why starfield wins by comparison is the future modding community fixing the game. The base game of starfield is terrible and I’m running at 30fps on the Xbox series x While on my pc you can’t even optimize nividia graphics card for my 3080 because they sign an exclusive deal with AMD. They were only 2 interesting quest in the game while on No Man Sky had me killing sentient robots, dune worms, terraforming, exploring the deep ocean, and finding space whales. That is what people want in a space game which there is non existent in starfield and no reason to be in space in starfield. The modding would make the game better which is unfortunately for me since I’m an average enjoyer of getting achievements. No Man Sky in my opinion indisputably wins but in the long run starfield. Starfield was meant to have an ending storyline which yeah that is fine but it shouldnt ever be an end because there is a vast amount of galaxy's for people to explore no man sky definitely nailed the transition from planets to space noticed that with starfield you have a bit of a load screen when it comes to taking off in your ship. So yeah if both combined ideas into one game they would be able to fix issues people have with either one

Bethesda just use the same engine to disperse Fallout dungeons into different locations disguised as planets, then force players to warp again and again, which is even worse than seamless Fallout or even Skyrim map. Yes Starfield is certainly better on shooting but if that's my goal I'd rather go back and play Fallout, also alot of other games can give you that gameplay experience on shooting and warfare. However the advantage of NMS is unique among all games till now, there is no replacement game possible. All their shortages compared with Starfield can be easily catched up by scalability because they dont touch the game engine, some can even just be some variable value changes.

Apples and pears, imo. Long-time NMS player here, with (thanks to prior experience) a deeply ingrained distrust of anything Bethesda. For the solo role-play experience, Starfield may have the edge although, as I understand it, the RP campaign has a limited run. NMS is open-ended, with a variety of play modes (including multiplayer) and a vast array of individual options Space hobo, base-builder, fighter ace, bug hunter, explorer, asteroid miner, hermit, fleet builder, whatever and whenever you choose. Procedural rendering makes a big difference. Granted, there can be a degree of repetition in NMS but, for the most part, you can randomly land anyplace on ANY world, and walk in any direction until you completely circle that world (which WILL take a long time, I promise), and the landscape will vary all the way. In Starfield, as I understand it, you have one fixed landing point per world, and if you walk far enough away from there, that's it. Then, finally, there are my issues with Bethesda. I love Fallout 3 and 4, but saw close hand the raging dumpster fire that was Fallout 76. With all these and others, Bethesda's idea of quality control has been consistently abysmal - games typically launched in a barely functional state, with the mindset of "Meh, let some modders fix it." I won't go into Beth's habit of venal penny-pinching, but I expect it to surface in SF soon enough. Refer their first try at FO4's so-called Creation Club, and all their shenanigans with 76. If Starfield is a success, and it is showing promise so far, I expect this to have a lot more to do with what independent modders bring to the party, rather than whatever Bethesda does to it next.

Haven't played NMS in a while but it was an awesome experience, very relaxing. It was also great to be able to pick up and put down if I didn't have much time. You're mostly right. You can have multiple (not even sure there's a limit) landing zones on any planet in Starfield. They're boxed in and not connected but the box is pretty generous so it wasn't an issue for me. The lack of any vehicles solidly killed any desire for me to keep walking until I would've hit the invisible wall anyway. Also the exploration is weak so landing on a random planet to explore is not recommended as a main activity. You've played Fallout 3 and 4 so you know the deal with Beth's quests. They're generally well designed yet quite time consuming, enjoyable nonetheless. Some aspects are poorly designed. The skills are tedious and made excessively "grindy". The amount of basic information the game does not communicate about countless things is kind of staggering. Overall I really liked Starfield. The combat is snappy and there's a lot of fun to be had building ships (digital Legos). Maybe wait until it goes on sale and the proper modding tools come out. It's worth a look but there's certainly no rush.

@@vincer7824 Yup, pretty much what I've thought. Give Starfield six months, for the indie modders to fully hit stride. By then, there'll likely be GOTY versions available on the cheap. We shall see. .... And, by the way, do NOT get me started on the Fallout 4 radial quests. One of the best pieces of advice I got was to switch off the Castle radio, to prevent an endless stream of stupid pointless 'Save-The Settlement" quests. I could armor up a Settlement more than Stalingrad, and it'd STILL be getting blitzed by 3 Raiders and their dog. :)

I loved NMS, but lets be real. If NMS release launched alongside Starfield, we wouldn't be having this conversation.. Its more than a little disingenuous to compare the two as things stand. Irrespective of the fact that only superficially, are the two capable of being compared at all. The closest relative to Starfield is Mass Effect, and even thats pushing it. I have no doubt thats purely because MS studio's were integral to the first trilogy, and likely learnt a lot in that collaboration to offer this one. - To me Starfield is more like Halo 4, with some Halo Wars II features included. Much like Command & Conquer came up with Renegade, to zoom in on the C&C universe. The game starts out very broad, and is clever about not bombarding the player with the full scope of the game. Its very ambitious, much more so than NMS. - In this game I've discovered that once you have your barings you can do a lot better than exploiting glitches; to the point that you are cheating yourself from achieving prowess. Whats more likely, is a combination of the two will define this game. To each their own.

Play NMS and enjoy the feeling of space exploration. Mine resources, take on and build up a settlement, find cool ships, run around in a mech, destroy Sentinels, get a living ship, be the owner of a freighter, enjoy seeing your ship collection inside your awesome frieghter, make an outpost and feel free to check out the lite story. When you get tired and want to do actual quests and hear a voiced NPC and have fun shooting pick up Starfield. Do the faction quests, piss off your annoying companions, marry one of them because it's slim pickings in space, get arrested, shoot pirates along with everyone else, board ships, build ships, build a few more and finish the main quest. Dabble in NG+ and make everyone float like Pennywise until going to "those places" starts to get unbearably annoying and seeing the dancers in the Astral Lounge again makes you want to nuke Neon. When you get tired of that and long for even better combat and an intense adult story with characters that are actually likeable pick up Cyberpunk and pretend you landed on Volii for the last time. Lastly, Jackie > all of Constellation

For a game 25 years in the making from idea to release, they really should be ashamed of themselves for bringing out a cut and paste, pile of garbage like Starfield is at the moment, will this improve over time I hope so, but considering Ultimate Edition here in Australia has $170 asking price (non-sale or discount) is F'n disgusting especially how much they hyped it up and delivered a pile of POO, NMS is what half that price and has far more exploration to offer than Starfield ever will. While NMS might lack the in depth narrative Starfield offers; it far outshines on every other aspect, I love finding different ships that no one else has found, naming weird creatures, planets, systems and fauna to whatever I want makes you feel a part of the narrative, is it repetitive? sure, but that's its charm and with every 18 Quintillion planets to fully explore some having the most unique finds that barely anyone else would even come across in their 'lifetime' makes it more entertaining to go back too. I'm yet to complete Starfield so seeing people already have 100% it; seriously Skyrim at launch had far more to offer than Starfield and that's sad considering the time, effort and teams working on Starfield. NMS goes from strength to strength with every 'free' update but NMS isn't an RPG set in space, whereas Starfield is so they both do have unique features to offer but currently I have way more fun in NMS than I am in Starfield. So, considering the 125G Starfield install to the 14Gig NMS install yeah, I was expecting a hell of a lot more from Starfield than they claimed to offer and undelivered

Of all the praise I have for NMS, one of the things I absolutely wish more than anything that they do update is the procedurally generated worlds. It would be awesome if they programmed into the engine algorithms for creating worlds that more conform to geography and physics, creating more unique worlds. I want to explore beautiful planets that have rivers, lakes, mountains, forests, waterfalls and so much more. But you notice most of the best screenshots for NMS is in space because the worlds are themselves pretty boring.

@jacobely6826 9 месяцев назад
to be fair they have fixed a lot of the procedural generation issues. the main problem is that itscauses strife in the community every time they do it... with the main overhaul that massively helped planets feel more interesting bringing a full universe wipe, deleting everyones progress on all saves. this was deemed necessary, but very much disliked. they've updated the proc gen more since then, but without doing another full universe reset they are very limited in what they can do and mostly relegated to minor terrain changes and simply adding in new planets to each solar system, overcrowding the universe. another major issue is that the game is on switch and the original xbox and playstation. these consoles are incredibly weak and likely wouldnt be able to handle a huge planet reformation that would make them more feature rich.

I say this after completing the main story line on three save this year. Starfield offers the ability to role play and interact with characters and a fleshed story line (So far for me). However in comparison to NMS there is planet exploration, system exportation, and space combat on a smaller scale. I've watched several content creators stream Starfield and, to me, it's not much like No Man's Sky at all, which I have played nearly 2000 of so far and it is the game I always find myself going back to after trying out other games. I think it all depends on what a person likes. Like 1st person shooter games with a lot of dialog in a more "realistic" setting of humans in space, go for Starfield. Like a more sandbox survival game with space ships, freighters you can build up like a base, ground vehicles, pets to adopt (even flying ones if you have a PC mod or get an egg from another player), tons of planets to explore, seamless flight from space to planets, a little storyline, missions, multiplayer across multi-platform (yes, it does have it's issues but it is getting better), tons of things to do if you are self driven, then go for No Man's Sky. If you like to experience both, then do both. I think they are completely different types of games just with a similar space theme though No Man's Sky never was intended to be a realistic looking game and there are humanoid creatures but nothing you can actually say for certain is human. It just all depends on what type ofgame a person likes to play as to which they will think is better. As far as affordability, you did touch on one thing that is holding a lot of players back and, even if I did like RPG/First Person Shooter type of games, I still wouldn't play it because it would tax my GPU, as it is just barely on the minimum specs (the rest of the hardware is fine but this game is very GPU heavy).
