Starfish Prime Test Interim Report by Commander JTF-8, was one of the high-altitude nuclear tests in the Operation Fishbowl series conducted in the Pacific Proving Ground in 1962. It was launched in the Johnston Island area to an altitude of about 400 kilometers by a Thor rocket and had a yield of 1.4 megatons.
The test evaluated the capabilities of an antiballistic missile to operate in a nuclear environment and the vulnerability of a U.S. reentry vehicle to survive a nearby nuclear blast. It also provided information on the ability of a U.S. radar system to detect and track reentry vehicles. Another goal was to discern the effects of a high-altitude blast on command and control systems, which were shown to be vulnerable in earlier high-altitude tests. The final goal was to obtain information on the feasibility of testing in outer space.
The color and resolution of this version has been restored over other available copies.
This is a different transfer from DoE Film catalog #0800062.

The Hawaiian shirts make it all seem so… comfortable. Like a holiday. Except they were testing devices that could end humanity in an hour.

This was the second attempt at this experiment. The RSO blew the vehicle up after the engine cut out 49 seconds into the launch. The range safety destruct package's spattered Plutonium all over the place. It took WEEKS to clean up the mess. The EMP generated by the test made a mess of Oahu's electrical and electronics.

lovely finally getting a smooth copy of these tests... Can't wait for the rest of these... So used to hearing jittery, wavering audio, due to older copies :( These are gorgeous

This has been digitally enhanced something fierce. Distinct plastic artificial look showing up regularly. If someone scanned the original film material, now that would be amazing.

That's because it has been upscaled with AI, the film negatives aren't actually that quality. Looks like this is an upscale of a video tape transfer anyway, you can see the remnants of tape artifacts behind the ridiculous amount of denoising. Kind of lame but I guess it's better than nothing.

Fantastic... Awesome work guys... thanks... thanks this is so nice arduous work to view all this so clear picture... i remember the original... I have no words... if for the most important operations do the same... and do the same work as this video... remain forever in a fantastic view.

Those green booster and orangish (second stage) missiles were Nike Apaches. 10 were launched from Johnston Island for the Starfish Prime test: 5 launches at 8:56 GMT 1 launch 8:57 GMT 1 at 9:03 GMT 1 at 9:11 GMT 1 at 9:31 GMT 1 at 9:59 GMT The most Nike Apache launches on 9 July (UT, July 8 Honolulu time) Starfish Prime test were from Barking Sands launch facility on Kauai, Hawaiian Islands. 21 total launches for various radiation tests from Barking Sands, ENE of Johnston Island. Beta electrons drift to the East in the geomagnetic field, as they oscillate at tremendous speeds between the northern and southern magnetic field conjugate points-the South geomagnetic conjugate point above the American Samoa and Fiji region.. Thus it was Kauai vicinity for observing burst radiation. Relativistic beta electrons create the massive EMP effects.

"Relativistic beta electrons create the massive EMP effects." Which ended frying the electronics of about five satellites in orbit.

Until this video I assumed that the Starfish Prime was primarily a basic science test. This made clear that it's primary function involved weapons related operations. Clearly, this led into the U.S. Army's Safeguard Anti-ballistic missile (ABM) system. Only a small portion of that system was constructed and then decommissioned shortly after going into operation. It was a multi-billion system that involved intercepts of incoming nuclear warheads using the detonation of thermonuclear warheads before the enemy reentry vehicles reentered the atmosphere. No actual intercept test was ever conducted using a nuclear detonation.
