Stargirl 3x02 Pat and Sylvester Question Shade 

Jonathon Cake completely owns this role. He says he can't feel emotions anymore, but as his character develops, you can tell he does, and he's enjoying Blue Valley.

A theory of mine is that Starman will be an enemy at some point and when he does something bad the Staff will abandon him and become completely for Courtney

This scene illustrates why Sylvester needs Pat to be a superhero. The Cosmic Staff may be the thing that gives Sylvester his powers and makes him super, but its Pat that makes him a hero. From what we've heard about Sylvester's past, his parents were never really the best role models for him when he was growing up with Pat being the only positive influence in his life since he actually showed him genuine affection. Whenever Sylvester didn't listen to Pat, he ended up doing something that he knew was wrong like killing Bruce Gordon to stop Eclipso. As soon as he agreed to Courtney's proposal to become Starman again, he immediately wanted Pat to be his sidekick again because he knows deep down as much as he treats Pat as beneath him most of the time, that Pat was more of an older brother figure that kept him on the right path whenever his ego started to effect his behavior like here. After the original JSA broke up he immediately apologized because if he were to lose Pat he would've had no one else since he knows that Pat is the one person whose always stuck by him through thick and thin.

Great writing of the bromance between Starman and Stripesy, Sylvester really looked like Pat's younger but impulsive brother. It seems that the lost 10 years made his values still too black and white, making him screwing things up but then apologize quickly in front of Pat. Besides, he still rudely insisted the "hero-sidekick" relationship in front of Pat, he would be beaten up brutally by "Strawhat Luffy" if he acknowledged these lines, saying that he is not capable of being a leader

Love Jonathan Cake as Shade, but I feel like there was a missed opportunity in casting John Oliver in the role if only to allude to his and Joel McHale's roles in Community. Or what I just said was kind of stupid and was only funny to me.
