Prof. Garland-Thomson (Women's Studies) talks about how we examine other people in her new book, "Staring: How We Look" (Oxford University Press, 2009). "Staring is a vital book for our understanding of disability and its impact on each of us," says Sander Gilman (author of "Making the Body Beautiful: A Cultural History of Aesthetic Surgery"). "It is a bold and path-breaking book that should be on the reading list of everyone in education, public affairs, and social policy."

I love this video. Is there a chance that captions might be added so I can use it in training?

Yes. It's an ugly irony that a video about the social implications of disability has been made public without being made accessible. People just don't realize how hard RU-vid's auto captioning is to decipher -- especially with women's voices.

Exactly! And part of the problem is that one doesn't know what is and is not accurate. Two years ago I made the request. Still auto captioned only. :(

Avoidance can be just as annoying, as if to indicate one is not pleasant to look at... social behavior is complicated at times. Curb Your Enthusiasm and Shameless sure do a good job at breaking up some of the social taboos. On that note, something interesting to observe is how network TV is mimicking those two programs, but in a weird watered down version that doesn't work as well. That's almost dangerous!
