It is said that János Starker worked his entire life to rid his cello playing of any tension, some would argue to the determent of his musicality, but it's that exact absence of tension which shines through in this one of a kind recording of the Finnish composer, Rautavaara's early work with a superb performance by Starker. Not only was this Rautavaara's first cello concerto, completing his second cello concerto many decades later in 2010, but this is his first attempt at writing a concerto for any instrument.
