This is Race 2, from the Starlight Express 2nd US Tour, 2004. The film portion of the race was directed by Julian Napier and also used in the 1st and 2nd UK tours as well as the New Zealand Arena Tour. The double/blurry image in the film that you see here is because the films were presented in stereoscopic 3-D, designed to be viewed with polarized 3D glasses which caused the images to push out beyond the confines of the flat screen and into the audiences faces.

Using pre recorded footage for the race sequences is a smart idea to compensate for the fact that not every theater can have the mutli million dollar setup Broadway had.

Good Grief Weltschaft's arm falls off. That's a bit gruesome. Plus, what's the point of trains beating others up? They'd be disqualified.

Unbelievably late reply, but Control doesn’t seem to mind them attacking each other. To him it’s all fun and games, he just wants to see the action. This kid can’t even decide which rules he wants to enforce, let alone punish racers who break them

Well since he’s supposed to be a train, it’s just equivalent to his side being heavily damaged, which can be repaired

I assume that the trains beating each other up is basically them trying to get ahead of each other, but since they had humans portraying them, they punched each other, instead of bashing or bumping

Sorry, but this is boring in comparrison to the real races in the theatre versions. I know that this is because it's easier way for tour but the races are so cool if they are performed on stage.
