Starlink Coastal Coverage Limitations May Push Boaters to More Expensive Data Plan

If you are an active cruiser, keeping connected on the water via Starlink may soon be a LOT more expensive.
New changes to Starlink's terms for the Roam service plan will soon limit "Coastal Coverage" to "5 consecutive days at a time and a total of 60 days over the course of a year."
These time limits are newly found in Starlink's terms of service and FAQs, and seem to apply to cruising even within your own home country.
The change might be designed to push active cruisers from the $165/mo Roam plan to the $250/mo Mobile Priority plan, which does not include these limits.
But just what constitutes "coastal coverage" - will cruisers who stick to the lakes, rivers, near islands or the intracoastal waterways be impacted?
Will usage at marinas and anchorages count as "coastal"?

I think few people actually need the ocean plan. Most will use the internet while at anchor or at the marina. Which I would not consider ocean. Even coastal I’d give at least half a mile of leeway. I guess too many switched to the cheapest plan available while still enjoying perks on the water. There is no doubt in my mind that we will continue to see lots of changes in plans and features for the next two years at least.

The only constant we've seen with Starlink is changes :)

I recently got a notice from Starlink that my coastal coverage was increased. Hang tight, they are still adjusting plans.

Just went to their site, and it says they do cover coastal and international travel. Looks like the plan separates coastal from the ocean. Guess we will find out more when we buy this next month.

I'm not surprised... just sad about greed versus service. Thanks so much for your valuable information & service. 💙💙💙

Do you have any idea how much it costs to build and launch 1000s of satellites and design and produce terminals? Tell you what, what don't you start your own global high speed low latency internet. Talk about a choosy beggar.

Most of the time you still have cell coverage 12 miles offshore.

I notice the ones who are mad are the one who have been trying to game the system. People who pay for US coastal coverage but are down in Barbados for 6 months using it.

The change here is that Starlink is now defining Coastal Coverage and applying it to US based coastal cruisers who have previously been legitimately within TOS on the Roam plan.

How is day defined? Does five minutes per day counted as a full day? I think about downloading or updating navigational or weather updates. Cheers.

It is unclear - but I suspect SpaceX might consider any usage in a day towards the count. Any boater who has more than 60 active cruising days a year might be at risk of getting cut off eventually. But things with SpaceX are always subject to change too.

Starlink provides an extensive network coverage over land, with the satellite expenses shared within a large customer base. Over the sea, the customer base is relatively small. It makes sense, to me, that customers be charged for their use of company resources.

Totally for truly ocean data.... but when you can literally see the land all around you when on rivers, waterways and lakes?

This will have a huge impact in Europe. Most people are now fitting 4/5G routers for costal internet i think is it a commercial mistake. Why pay $250 a month for only 50gb. I can buy a 180gb sim for €40. With coastal Starlink needs to compete with Sim cards and then people will upgrade when offshore, but if they don't fit Starlink in the first place.

Even here in the US - cellular works great in most places coastal cruisers go. We personally haven't had our Starlink activated all year.

I really hate the way Starlink is fucking with us - nickel & dime with a twist of death by a 1000 cuts. They are quickly making themselves unpalatable.
