Thank you for this video. I am getting ready to head back out in my camper van after a 16 month break due to health issues. I decided to go with Starlink this time and just received mine the other day. It will be put to the test next week, once I am back on the road. Seems like I made a good choice in purchasing Starlink for RV.

Yes, if you’re out away from civilization there’s no other option. We have noticed that it’s slowed down during peak hours but it still works great as long as your not trying to game competitively.

So far no issues in cloudy/rainy weather... if anything it's been a little faster we are getting speed well over 100mbs on Vancouver Island.

I just got goosebumps after seeing those speeds for 135 USD/month and it's unlimited. 76 Mbit/s download, and 8.4 Mbit/s upload speed with only 143ms ping is a miracle.

Because nobody else is using the service so you will get pretty good bandwidth and latency. I compare it to cable internet because it is the same way. 2am on a weekday and you will reach or exceeded the bandwidth you are paying for because nobody else is on but when you are on at 2pm on a Saturday, you will be lucky if you do not time out on some web page requests.

@@librab103 They are going to be doubling the satellites in the next year. More satellites more bandwidth. The newer version satellites are operating with lasers so latency will fall also.

@@dewdropin2010 it doesn't work like that. Bandwidth comes from the number of ground stations. All adding satellites will do is split the bandwidth up and increase latency. In a vacuum, light and radio waves travel at the same speed ie 300,000 km/s

What about power? While Starlink itself doesn't draw a lot it requires 120V AC which means you need an inverter running that typically has a lot of power draw even when idle. Sure solar can make up for it, but you also have other devices that consume your power that might be more important. What has your experience been in that regard?

We have 340 ah of lithium ion batteries powered by 400 watts of solar and a battery to battery charger that runs while we drive. Our inverter is really low power draw. There is a link in the description for most of our power system. Over the past two and a half years we’ve rarely run into situations where we have to worry about running low on battery and if we get really low we just switch from our induction cooktop to our little gas burner. It also helps to turn off the inverter if we’re out hiking or biking all day but we often forget. While we are still in the early stages of testing Starlink it doesn’t have a significant draw that our system can’t handle. We’ll see what happens if our solar doesn’t see the sun for a week which is very likely to happen over the next several months.

Most of the world has around max 2mb/s internet speed and everything is working great. At +50MB/S, we are in the luxury territory. The only problem that I see with Starlink might be the latency. Then again at less 100 ms, you are more than fine.

We just used ours for the first time this weekend. We are in some trees in our campsite and had OK results. I would like to invest in a longer cord and take it to a more open spot above our campsite. May work better hopefully. Even so, we were able to stream videos and get internet on laptops and phones. Teams call was a failure. kicked out every 2-3 mins from the call. Switched to hot spot for calls so it did not drop me. Trying to find a longer cable (custom connectors of course) and having some trouble. Amazon has one for $104.00 but that seems steep. Still looking. Starlink does not seem to sell replacement cables on site.

Yes, with trees calls with drop but it can still stream ok. Not sure if you’ve seen but they have a 150ft cable for sale on their site. You have to sign in then hit shop it should be after the mounts. It’s not much cheaper $93

did you ever park IN the trees and test? as in, trees overhead, not just next to you. very interested, as i camp in pines often.

If it’s a complete canopy of trees then it won’t work at all. We’ve put up a follow up video that’s shows our time using it for a month and only ran into the situation a couple times.

Why do you have to put it on top of the van? It seems like if the cable is 15-20 ft the van would not be an obstruction.

It would work on the ground. I think there are two reasons we would prefer the roof. 1.) We have a dog that runs around the van like the Tasmanian devil. 2.) I think the added height plays a major role in avoiding obstruction. At the first camping location there were a few trees at the bottom of the field of view. They didn’t cause noticeable interruptions but I suspect with a ground level Starlink it could be a problem. With that said I do think we will run into situations where the ground is a clear winner and we will have to tame Penelope. (It comes with a 75 ft cord)

Satellite dishes are never recommended to be mounted on the ground. Mounting them up in the air only makes sense.

@@jefftaylor844 I see you're point but if you're camping in trees and there is an opening 50 ft away it would be better to place the starlink in the optimal location rather than on top of your vehicle with a ton of obstructions.

I just added the link to the description. It's actually an art portfolio bad that we DIY'd into a back seat bag. Just put the straps through youre headrest. We have since sowed the bag to the straps so it didn't sag but it worked without sowing.

What is experience in windy conditions. Is it safe on top the van?

We haven’t experienced super windy conditions but the four prong stand it comes with is pretty stable and we just put a sand bag on top of it just in case.

I’m really sorry we didn’t meet your expectations for this video. In the trees the speeds are the same. The issue is the Starlink will constantly disconnect and reconnect because of the obstructions (trees). So video calls wouldn’t work well.

$135 is a lot for internet if you have a house with already decent internet available. If you do a lot of remote camping and need internet for work it’s really the only option.

I found it to not work at all around trees...OR...I am just too dumb to set it up...and since there is zero customer support, I returned it. I am OUT $135 after my "full refund"...thing is a fail.

Greetings from under a tree! So sorry to hear that it didn’t work out for you. The trees can definitely cause interruptions but we’ve found that it still works really well with a little bit of clearing in the trees. Just as long as you’re not under a full canopy of trees!
