I'm in recovery from oxy, and I'm also in my last year of law school writing my long paper on new regulations related to opioid pharma sales reps. This show came at the perfect time to keep me centered on my writing.

I watched it last year at this time when it was airing and I told my girlfriend how amazing it was and how I couldn't believe a series as great as this was even allowed to be made. I honestly believe many of those responsible for pushing oxy actually believed they were doing good, like the Nazis. It's horrifying.

For me the saddest part of this was how many high school athletes were placed on this drug after an injury and then got hooked. I was a hawk to not allow my son to be given this medication thank God

Actually Chernobyl should awaken people from their slumber and realize we can overcome this opioid crisis much better and easier than the Chernobyl disaster which was literally a global catastrophe in which many great people stepped up and sacrificed their lives to stop the spread. To see US attorneys step up and take on big pharma is truly an inspiration. I say that as a recovering addict to heroin.

“Dopesick” has been quite interesting and eye-opening. The Sackler Act needs to be enacted so that the Sackler family and others like them are held accountable for the crimes they have committed against unsuspecting people who trusted that the medication they manufactured was safe.

I started screaming about all of this, including the Sackler family, in 2003; shortly after I became dependent on oxycontin. 8 years later I got off of them (took a full year and lots of $$). Glad to see the nation finally waking up.

These men are 'actors', but they were in no way 'acting'. Everyone on the show did such a great job bring truth to light that even today needs to be addressed. I applaud them for putting their hearts and souls into making this series exactly what it was meant to be. Such dedication.. Mission accomplished guys! ❤💛💙

It's so great. I had no idea that these men were so passionate about these issues and I'm going to rewatch the series again. I remember the boss of the US attorneys trying to stop them, but they pushed ahead with felony charges on these guys anyway. I was thrilled. When people like them actually see inside of a prison cell, it would indeed bring about change.

I think the Sackler family should be forced to get addicted to oxy as part of their punishment for these crimes. Of course they couldn't complain that it was cruel and unusual punishment since it's the very condition they inflicted on their victims.

Why are the creators of an addictive drug not being treated like cocaine and heroine pushers. People buy these dangerous medicines believing that they going to be pain free, only to find themselves with an addiction that is harder to break than heroin. Remember that the family that owned the company managed to keep the millions they made from the misery of others.

Because justice in the United States is just another item with a price tag on it. The Sackler’s have better lawyers than heroin dealers. They also employ lobbyists effectively and own politicians. It may not be possible to fine billionaires… Or even put them in prison… But I think the numbers bare out did that that is very unlikely to happen. It almost never does. So, from the Sackler‘s standpoint, probably worth the risk.

I am an ObGyn and I worked in rural Kentucky at the time OC came out. I was trained to use evidence based medicine and also least expensive treatments unless newer, more expensive treatments were proven to be better. I remember the reps telling us about the lower addiction potential, but not the FDA statement. Thank fully I didn’t prescribe OC but only a few times and the reps stopped coming to see me. Any opioid is addictive and KY has a huge problem with it. There were very few rehab options too. I am watching the series and am shocked how a company can manipulate the system so well. I pray that they receive a massive punishment to prevent this happening again. For your next series you should look into the mesh implants for prolapse and how they weren’t tested due to FDA loopholes.

Ha! I had an appointment to get the mesh implant about 10 yrs ago, and was at the same time looking into it. I ended up canceling at last minute - it seemed like it was more likely to make things worse. Odds didn't look like it would be worth it. I hope they look into this! I hadn't heard about this yet. Thank you for being moral. FDA can't be trusted. Sadly too many real -time examples these days.

i felt the same way. although it is difficult to stomach, and I have to watch it with many stops n pauses, it is eye opening and well worth it. It's changed my sentiment: people's pain and trust were exploited.

I started it with the intention of probably turning it off after the first episode. The subject is too depressing. The series is so good! Watch the pharmacist too, great documentary. Regulatory capture is what it is called when the companies own the regulators.

It's worth it to see all the ways purdue pharma spread their deception... making an entire medical profession believe lies were research-backed truth. This is really highlighted in the series. I was shocked. Some of the personal moments shown are tough... you could fast forward though.

Why is it even accepted that salespeople would promote medicines to doctors? That’s a major red flag. Medicines should not be promoted like some flashy products. If they are truly unimagined necessities, then there should not have been salespeople in the first place. Let the medicine and preceding long-term reports speak for themselves. Capitalism and the Health sector should not mix when there are sellers who are only in the business to sell and climb career ladders

I thank god that I had a severe allergic reaction to pain medication when I had my wisdom teeth pulled several years back....' Vicodin...oxy....I felt deathly nauseous every time I popped one and ended up tossing the bottles and just fighting through the pain with Tylenol. My body may have very well saved itself in the long-term by sacrificing that short term relief.....

That's not an allergic reaction. Lots of people throw up from them. They need to be taken with food or you need a smaller dose. Ibuprofen works just fine for teeth being pulled unless there was problems.

@@staceystrukel1917 Agreed. It’s hilarious to me how many people think that’s an allergic reaction! It’s called being opioid naive, and most people throw up when they first start taking them. Now try being opioid tolerant and taking them, stopping, and THEN dealing with almost a week straight of nausea. Now THAT is the type of nausea that can kill you (due to feeling suicidal or electrolyte imbalance).

I got it both ways, a pharma rep gave me my first pill, then my doctors. Nightmare. But I was weird for asking what was wrong with me, I knew something felt off. By the time I realized it was too late.

It is a great series. Unfortunately as proof today out of Oklahoma, it is Hollywood attempting to correct history. The criminals responsible for the current opioid crisis are getting off scot-free. It is so frustrating.

Page Page yeah, it’s simplistic to think people are taking this for a headache. It’s highly addictive, which was implicitly covered up, and doctors were prescribing it. Do you research everything your dr. prescribes for you or do you trust your doctor to know what he’s doing. Hindsight is 20/20, but people got hooked on this BECAUSE it’s so addictive and it was prescribed by a knowledgeable medical professional.

I’m a nurse practitioner recently retired. When I was in nursing school plus after I started work we were taught if narcotics were only taken for their intended use, addiction wouldn’t happen. Clearly that was wrong. Drug reps are sent to present new meds to educate doctors & staff. They have the research to prove what the drugs do. So it’s to the benefit of the rep to know the research & persuade the docs or NP or PA to use it. Medical providers rely on then to truthfully explain everything to get them to prescribe the med.

My in-laws are from southern Ohio area/ near Portsmouth. My husband lost his brother to this epidemic and has affected people in his side of the family. I remember my mother in law saying one of her doctors went to jail/ prison for overprescribing, I think. Now there is a transition to cheap heroine because of this Oxy abuse. You can see the ripple effects not only in Appalachia but all over this country. The book Dreamland, by Sam Quinones, would be a great Part 2 for Dopesick.

It's interesting how many aren't seeing that other products that are sold via marketing research data have the same corruption. The part in the show about Purdue manipulating the axis on the charts I saw done by marketing in the research I did almost 10 years ago for a product in a completely different industry. Thankfully the product didn't get out. It was crap. This should clearly give a picture on the resistance to the you know what today.

Was very good. First time I learned anything about this situation. I was flabbergasted. I watched a doc last week "Crime if the Century" which told this Sackler story. Gonna watch Dopesick soon.

As I listened to this excellent review, I could not help but think of our current pandemic & the belief & and acceptance by the general public, our government & the health authorities that the single solution for everyone on the planet is an experimental procedure - part drug, part technology - & the necessity to enforce the infliction of said procedure with coercion, propaganda & mandates. But, thankfully, the pharmaceutical conglomerates, the FDA, & our politicians have learned so much with past experiences & are now trustworthy & united in their mandate to make human health & well-being their primary goals.

I know I will get hate mail for even raising this question, but I read where oxycodone is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. It's my understanding it's still being prescribed today. So, is the question that Purdue Pharma published false statistics about the addictive aspect of the drug? If so, that seems like a crime to me punishable by jail time. Did the FDA accept the company's findings at face value? Were there even enough studies done to reach a conclusion on this aspect of the drug? I can't blame a company for incentivizing its salespeople to sell it's product. I don't think the sales people are to blame. They're not medically trained after all. If the drug is still being prescribed, then it's a matter of proper education on its appropriate use. Am I wrong in my facts or analysis? Let's keep in mind this is a Hollywood movie. I have not seen the video series yet......

Oxycontin brand is no longer being sold, but pain patients like me still have access to generic, immediate-release oxycodone. It turns out that extended release is more likely to get people addicted than leaving the drug alone in its natural state.

In my country Oxycodone is still prescribed but in a different form, so Oxycontin, the drug itself no longer exists. Naloxone is added to the new drug and they say it is not possible to crush and snort it like how they did it in the TV series. According to many articles and the TV show, Purdue DID falsely claim that the drug was more safer than it actually was. There was definitely not enough evidence to support their presentations; they only referenced short letters (and not original research papers) to back them up. Which is unbelievable. You are right, pharma companies need to sell their drugs and they should be enthusiastic about it. But most sales reps that I have met act ethically, and I would like to believe that they only want whats best for the patients. If the drug doesn't work for someone, stop it. If the patient is not eligible, don't prescribe it. It's not that I'm blaming anyone, but incentives can turn things ugly.

Yep, absolutely Cambrie. I was hit by a tram in Australia. I was sent to a hospital for care. They immediately gave me OxyContin. After a few days (thank God!), I intuitively said, "no more thanks; I will deal with the pain". I think, in some respects, I healed much quicker. Education is the key - you're right - and seeking out capable alternative therapists. Not everything can be fixed by taking drugs. If you have people "dopey" then they're less likely to ask questions and challenge the status quo. They're too consumed by their habit. It's a crime against humanity.

@@theecatalogue Did you know that there are side effects besides addiction? See the diet drug fen-phen. Approved by the FDA, until it was recalled. The "revolving door" between the FDA and pharma creates an inventive to for the FDA to look the other way for all sorts of problems. Not just addiction. That incentive is even STRONGER for the vaccine, because it is so much more profitable than opioids. Guess who has a lucrative job on Pfizer's board? The former head of the FDA. In the 70's and 80s people were successfully suing over DPT vaccine problems... the government claims they won their cases without "any scientific evidence" but... hard to believe that many would win without evidence. It was to the point almost all Pharma companies stopped making the DPT vaccine for fear of being sued. Then the government stepped in to save big pharma from consequences of vaccine problems. In return the US govt gets $0.75 tax from vaccine makers for every single vaccine distributed. It works out great for everyone, right? ;)

why do people seek to numb themselves so thoroughly ? the answer is simply living in a culture which does almost everything to encourage any sane person to flee - and if they cannot flee physically, they will try to do so through alcohol and drugs (you know, the easy routes...)

@@user-gl9jd3ih8h ...what exactly is the percentage ? here in the u.s. i would posit that most addicts were not initially seeking pain relief, but escape from a society that is deteriorating rapidly and a government that cares not a whit about how the average american lives - which is in serious debt, ridiculous rents/home prices, tax payer monies going to forever wars while homelessness has exploded, market crashes which routinely wipe out retirement plans, shite response to a global pandemic, daily mass shootings, fires that have destroyed entire towns (and other climate change related challenges), police violence against people o' color, the poor and those whose sexuality does not comport to biblical principals. the list goes on and on. not everyone is seeking relief from chronic physical pain. you mistake my point for lack o' compassion, which is unfounded...

@@sideshowbobrobert ridiculous summation / analysis. There is a whole gamut of reasons why someone becomes an addict (eg. trauma, abuse, peer group pressure). Some compassion mate rather than relying on "percentages". It doesn't matter. There has to be a better way, in the case of opioid addiction, to tackle the problem and avoid unnecessary deaths.

@@user-gl9jd3ih8h...'ridiculous' - this comment from someone who doesn't live here. where you err is simple : for whatever reason you insist that any comment under a youtube video (as opposed to a thoroughly detailed essay) about overdose fatalities suggests lack o' compassion, which is a strange - albeit too common - extrapolation about another person. whatever your motives are about defending addicts/addiction (personal experience ?), your 'fight' is not with me. the source o' the 'pain' may differ by definition; however the solution to escape is the roughly the same. and it should be obvious, but addiction has more to do with the chemical properties o' the substance than it does 'peer pressure'. i grew up in the waning days o' the 60s, the street drugs readily available today were nowhere to be found during the 'summer o' love' mate. peace out...

I have family members on the 7 day plan, meaning the Dr has to call in the opiate prescription every week for a 7 day supply plus a monthly office visit. Sadly, they have millions and believed their money can buy a doctor. Now they send people to the streets to buy for them. They also look 10-20 years older even with all the botox and plastic surgery. Sad people. I stay away.

I think he comes into the picture shortly after he's mayor. He had some sort of advisory/ consultant role with Purdue. He was somehow able to keep purdue in business with the criminal case against them, and kept anyone from doing any jail time. Does it explain him though? No, I don't really know how he went so wrong in life. It's a pretty bit part. Didn't surprise me that he was involved though.

Because of the sacklers and the mass marketing and drug pushing they revolutionized, they created millions of addicted customers and potential customers. Now our nation needs to unite and solve the consumer demand problem through mass education. That is the only way to solve this. Enforcement cannot. Education could.

You can easily find those interviews with a quick google search. I think it's interesting to hear from the actors. They had to do a lot of research to embody these roles.
