what about the moon mission ? bit optimistic to talk about mars if you havnt even completed your moon mission let alone the testing for that mission or a date for that moon mission. but than again that is elon who knows enough of his followers take his word even though he has never delivered on the time he said he would in the last 2 decades . but still people trust him on what he says boggles the mind .

About that, is someone in FAA aware of the plans Elon has to fly thousands of those? Anyone can imagine Starbase and Cape Canaveral to become like airports, imagine FAA telling JFK and Newark, sorry you have to restrict the trips to Europe to a hundred per year...

I am a huge SpaceX fan and love everything they're doing. I've waited five decades for a tech entrepreneur approach to aerospace. That said, the 2 years for unmanned and 4 years for manned missions to Mars is wack. SpaceX kicks ass because they have a tight loop for design-build-test. The Hohmann transfer orbit prevents SpaceX from rapid design iterations. Fly a test mission, and when it doesn't work, try again in 26 months.

Earth re-entry can test many aspects of the Mars missions. So could Moon landings. The experimental propellant transfers will likely be the last required link in enabling a first Mars mission launch, even preceding a successful Moon landing. I can easily see further propellant transfers enabling the subsequent first Moon test, running concurrently with the longer term Mars mission.

Many of the hardcore fans of SpaceX sometimes forget that Elon doesn't want to build the best spaceship ever. He wants a thousand of them. If they had a problem with a valve, SpaceX engineers are not just fixing it, they are thinking, OK, that times 1,000 -how do we make a production line of that? It would be much easier to make Spaceshuttle-style heat shield but that just wouldn't work because they need literally millions of PICA tiles. Also they will need tens of thousands of Raptor engines, giga-factories worth for methane and oxygen propellant, megatons of steel, you guys got the idea...

the FAA is responsible for things flying on earth. As far as I know it has no jurisdiction over things going wrong in space. Starliner didn't have any incidents while flying. It was only when it got to space that things were found to be out of whack.

Well it's interesting because right now Starship is expendable. As soon as the booster becomes reusable by being catchable the program is suddenly equivalent to F9. The limitation becomes just pure ship build rate. As soon as the ship makes it back for a catch the cadence becomes nuts like the current F9 cadence. A few more ship and booster revisions and you get pretty rapid progress. The tanker just needs this to be viable. Once tanker works you can launch to a large chunk of the solar system. 2 years to unmanned and 2 more till manned is a decent guess at it? The unknown is just how long does it take to get to that truly rapid stage. Progress is so agonizing right now!

I recall that NASA requires a calculable mortality risk of less than 1:280-ish for LEO missions. Can SpaceX and private crew astronauts exceed these risks for the first Mars mission?

My main concern with the catch attempt of a Super Heavy booster is not if it hits the tower, but rather if it misses the tower completely and slams into the tank farm. THAT will cause a huge explosion that would undoubtedly severely damage, if not destroy, most of the launch site and damage structures a fair distance away. There's a lot of liquid methane and oxygen stored uncomfortably close to the tower(s) that will have a flaming beast roaring down towards it -- off by a little bit and bye-bye launch facility. Nobody seems to be talking about that possibility.

Surely, if Super Heavy is off of its landing/catch target by more than a few meters it will abort to a splash down in the gulf. I have already heard something like this mentioned. The tank farm is a couple hundred meters from the tower, so there is plenty of room to detect an error and abort without getting anywhere near the tank farm.

and on a side note... honestly guys? Starship is a great tool for LEO, if it works! But to use it as an interplanetary vehicle? Why on earth would you do that? Us it to build infrastructure, use it to build a real craft that can travel the distance and transport enough cargo to make it worth while. Space is not only hard, it's freaking deadly as is Mars. You don't want to use a skiff to haul cargo across the Atlantic!

If Starship is going anyway, surely there are some potential science missions that wouldn't mind hitching a ride? What about a little greenhouse designed to try growing various seeds in Martian soil? Regarding fuel generation on Mars, talking about solar power seems like at most a stop-gap solution ue to deployment considerations, dust issues, and distance from the sun. Let's not pretend that nuclear power doesn't exist. We need to develop small modular reactors that can be sent via Starship and used in the first human settlements.

Greenhouse? Ok, but also include a Sabatier process factory and water drilling/mining probes. All fully automated with minimal remote supervision. It would also be great if the power source is autonomously deployed, such as PV arrays and/or Fission-Stirling power modules.

@@garyseven2798 Look at the energy required to land something on the Moon vs landing the same payload on Mars. . For the Moon, you need about 3.2 km/s for TLI, 1 km/s for LOI and 2 km/s for landing. Assuming LOI and landing are done with hypergolics, that means that if you wanted to land a 50-ton habitat on the Moon, you would need to bring about 300 tons to LEO. . For Mars, you need about 3.6 km/s for TMI, a heat shield to aerobrake at Mars, and about 1 km/s for landing. So to land a 50-ton habitat on Mars, you would need to bring about 250 tons to LEO. So it's not really cheaper to get something to the Moon than to get it to Mars.

​@@warrenwhite9085 Agreed. For Mars, the Aerobraking is mostly done without propellant. Moon missions require propellant all the way down from transfer orbit. Polar Lunar missions are even worse. However, we really want to expend Lots of propellant for *_Crewed Mars missions to minimize transit time._* 2 months vs 6 months is often mentioned. I would also surround the crew section with 100 tons of water and polyethylene to further reduce radiation dose.

​@@davidbeppler3032yes and no. Best description is that while there is no air to brak, you have to first THROW object that far. You need about 9.25 km/s DeltaV to get to Leo. Then you need next 2.5km/s to geo. And so on.

I’m not confident at all this idea of catching a rocket will work. Especially not consistently which will be needed. It looks great in an animated video though. But then again, no one had ever landed a rocket that had orbited in space before they came along and did it. They have some of the best engineers in the world, and it will be incredible to see them attempt it…excitement guaranteed.

One way to think about Methane is that it's four hydrogen atoms glued together with a carbon atom. So you have all of the hydrogen stored much more densely than with pure hydrogen - and the carbon "glue" also burns up. Considered that way - it's clearly an improvement over pure hydrogen.

Chop sticks will not work. There's not enough bracing down below contact points. Hold your arms out while holding a bucket of water. Now have someone drop bucket from 2 feet above you. Youre arms go down a lot. Plus the tower will lean toward rocket, and there's nothing contacting backside to ground... I have ten bucks that say tower will fail.

The strength of the chopsticks isn't the real question. That's easy (relatively speaking) to calculate and engineer. It's how well/softly the booster descends onto them.

3 problems with martian solar cells: (1) half the sunlight (re that on earth)--you discussed it. (2) faster deterioration because of harsher radiation. (3) massive winter sandstorms, In light of these problems... Elon, at least for the first 20 or 25 years on Mars, please use nuclear for power production. (During that interval, experiment with solar cells on Mars--but DON'T rely on solar!)

One does a test only when one is not sure whether the thing will work or not. But Test 4 already showed that the Starship cannot get to the lowest LEO with zero payload and return whole. So Test 5 is unnecessary. That however should not prevent us from dreaming of the Mars mission -- provided we put it far enough in the future that people will forget about it by then.

Starship can make the trip to Mars much faster than 9 months (which is the lowest ΔV trajectory), it can make it in a minimum of 80 days with an average of 115 days per Spacex.

@@davidbeppler3032 that would require hundreds of launches per Mars lander. 115 days is fast enough to overcome most problems critics consider impossible. Eg radiation, consumables stores, crew psychology and micro g effects on physiology become almost no issues with fast transits. To go faster than that you need nuclear propulsion and that has a great deal of problems on its own (extreme cost, in-space use exclusively which requires different launchers and landers, extreme safety risks from radiation at all stages etc)

​If you go too fast, the thermal protection system would be overwhelmed within the Mars atmosphere. It might be better to improve radiation shielding by surrounding the crew compartment with mostly water and polyethylene cargo, plus food. The timeline is feasible if you layout the Moon Starship schedule laidout by NASA Artemis program. They need to solve transit between earth and moon by this time next year for Starship whi h means, they should be refueling by Summer of 2025 in LEO, they seem to be on schedule for that critical path at this time. If they catch the booster, it's game on, since it's proof they can catch the Ship. Now, the state of the Pad problem after launch is still not solved. The pad is in no shape to launch after lift off. They need to be able to launch at least once everyday to get 4 or 5 ships going in a week, stage them , refuel them and send them on their way.

Better start incorporating landing gear into Starship soon if they'll ever be landing on the moon and mars. Bots for passengers seem like the way to get there early on, they would make great test dummies and be able to start setting up systems for the later arriving humans....

Literally and metabolically? That was a new saying. If orbital refueling is working pretty well in two years then maybe a testshot to Mars just to see if it manages to land can become a thing. HLS is supposed to land on the Moon in two years too... probably not happening either...

Ellie, they are trying to catch a 300 ton rocket out of the flipping sky on a tall tower that defies every theory of torsional bending! which has just been barbecued 8 minutes earlier. Not even a cable or two holding the tower straight up. Of course this is going to be delayed. Its near impossible !! But hey, your hello fresh will keep you going whilst we all wait for the miracle.

1. Just put 3 Starships in LEO. Two with crew area. One with a removable nose cone. This Starship have the same top as the Booster (you can put another Starship on it). 2. Fill up all 3 Starships. Assembling one of the "Starship Crew #1" on the top of the "Starship Booster". 3. Use a Falcon 9 with a Crew Dragon to send the crew in the same orbit as the "Starship Crew #1". Transfert the crew into it. 4. Fire the "Starship Booster" toward Mars, but return it to LEO with mostly empty tanks. The "Starship Crew" is on its way to Mars using only 40%-50% of its fuel to accelerate (~2 months trip). 5. Refill the "Starship Booster" and assemble the "Starship Crew #2" on top of it. Launch the uncrewed "Starship Crew #2" toward Mars. Don't use its fuel so that it's full when it orbits Mars. 6. "Starship Crew #1" land on Mars with 15%-20% of its fuel still in the tanks. The astronauts can use it to launch to Mars orbit where the 100% fueled "Starship Crew #2" wait patiently. 7. Transfert the crew to the "Starship Crew #2" and fire it toward Earth. The "Starship Crew #2" come back to LEO. The crew transfert to a Crew Dragon capsule and land on Earth.

Not a bad plan. Here's another: If Starship can safely land on Mars, it should already be capable of safely landing on Earth, so the Crew Dragon capsule becomes unnecessary. Both the refilled Mars crew mission ship and a full tanker ship leave LEO together. They transfer propellant in a highly elliptical orbit. The tanker has a nose section, flaps, and thermal protection tiles. It either returns to Earth's surface, or to LEO - using mostly the thermal protection tile system and just a smidge of propellant from the header tanks. Without the nose section, flaps and tiles, it cannot return to LEO except by using lots of propellant, which is very wasteful. The Mars crew mission ship, now filled to the brim and firing a second time from a highly elliptical orbit, can reach Mars rapidly (in 2 months) and then use Aerocapture to either land or make an elliptical orbit. I would put the tanker in Mars orbit two years before (plus many cargo ships at the landing site) and send the first crew mission only if the tanker and cargo missions succeed. Every 26 months, more tanker ships would be added to Mars orbit. Enough to evacuate a collapsed colony. Every fast crew mission is preceded by cargo ships using the slower Hohman transfer orbit. These cargo ships are for both the current mission and also surplus for later missions.

Also, the crew ships have enough food for a two-way trip. *_Besides extra propellants, the cargo is mostly water and polyethylene._* Both are excellent radiation absorbers and will shield the crew from radiation both during the trip and on the surface of Mars. [One of the first cargo ships to land on the surface should have a Sabatier process conversion factory and water drilling probe. Once these automated factories accumulate enough propellant, the orbital depot becomes redundant.]

SpaceX should consider building its own LNG facility to be made from pipeline gas closer to the launch pad. It would save them hundreds of millions. My entire life has been working in LNG and I consider myself a expert. The type of plant was built in Topoc Arizona and I was the field engineer who commissioned the plant.

As far as propellent for the return flight from mars -- and I know others must have thought of this -- why not send an unmanned rocket or rockets loaded with propellant to mars, land and be available when the manned rocket(s) arrive, eliminating the need to produce the methane on Mars?
