I'd like to remind you all that, "I don't know." is sometimes the best answer. You touched n the fact that inconel isn't used in the battery. You even addressed that inconel was used in the battery tray, not the battery case. You still managed to talk for about half an hour about the battery that made it back to earth.

...and yes, NiMH batteries were used for a while in consumer electronics including RC cars and 2irsoft guns.

By the way guys it was not a battery it was the mounting pintle shown on left in the pic and is a solid piece of stainless steel which may be inconel alloy. Note the small indent at the top of both pieces probably for a locking pin. Otherwise not bad but a bit long....

This group is really good this week. Perfect long form content to start the weekend, watching late on the west coast. Admittedly, the battery debris discussion could’ve been more concise, but show rounded out and got good for the long haul after the giant pope hat made its first appearance with Alex.

We all perceive significant risk with the first landing on the chopsticks - if it goes wrong then the perception is massive disaster for the OLM - to me it feels like there is something missing that reduces this risk a lot to the point that the booster can't do too much damage - any ideas what this could be?

Sorry im late, the part was a mount, not a battery. It was the transport mount that launched.

The roof was hit by a beer can sized chunk of solid Inconel, an alloy of chromium, nickel, iron niobium, molybdenum, aluminum and titanium. Whoever came up with that was a genius. That is the only reason it made it to the ground. They use it due to its resistance to cracking and heat distortion.

Batteries with different chemistries have different power requirement and care needs. So you would have to replace the batteries, supply and charging circuits. Plus the new batteries would have to be the same size.

If Artemis 3 just docks Orion to Starship in LEO, what are the chances future Artemis missions are just going to use Dragon capsules instead of Orion? Or maybe Starliner to spread the contracts around a bit? HLS needs long term lift support systems anyway, why not just ride it all the way from LEO to the Moon? Then no more SLS or Orion...

1:35:30 Oh sure, SpaceX is slower, but SpaceX doesn't have what NASA had during the space race i.e.. 1) A blank check and the ability to requisition almost anything from the government/civilian sector 2) the ability to bulldoze past anything that MIGHT get in their way(you think the Fish and Wildlife service could have held up NASA for 9 months?)

Why not use the unpressurized section of the Dragon cargo vehicle for large garbage disposal? It does a control reentry over the ocean??
@ale131296
@ale131296 Месяц назад
The trunk can't hold the cargo pallet and no, Dragon's trunk no longer does a controlled reentry over any ocean. The trunk is jettisoned prior to the deorbit burn which means it stays in orbit for months before randomly reentering somewhere between 51.6°N and 51.6°S on Earth.

In a world where starship is refueling 5+ in LEO for a moon mission there WILL NOT BE 2x SLS missions!! It will be a fight to keep the SLS program once congress realizes the extreme cost of SLS relative to what starship can do. At most it will be kept on life support and be given small roles in the play.

The FAA should not allow SpaceX to attempt a catch until they can hit a 30m target window out in the ocean twice in a row. Anything else would not be protecting public safety. There was a significantly higher bar for Falcon 9 landing at the cape.

Cape Canaveral is right next to the Kennedy Space center. A miss could cost billions of dollars in damages. Not to mention it's a very populated area. The only thing in Boca Chica is less than 100 people and SpaceX. The Highway is there too but that would be easy to fix. The only real risk is SpaceX losing their launch mount. Now, SpaceX isn't aiming to land on a 30m circle. It's aiming for a virtual tower. It needs to be caught. So Super Heavy has to be in the perfect location to be caught. The virtual tower will be in a predetermined location and the attempted catch will be over water. Once they get that nearly perfectly (SpaceX has added some hardware to align the ship better,) then they will be given the green light for a catch. You have to remember that the reason SpaceX want to catch it as soon as possible is because Super Heavy Booster is very expensive. Probably around 30-40 million per booster. They want to reuse them as soon as they can. However, my best guess for when they will attempt the catch is on IFT-6 at the earliest. But IFT8 as a more realistic deadline

Sorry guys but this was way too long, too much chit chat, too many bad jokes and you spent far too long time on many topics without any real good information being added. EJs long and not very well thought out opinions, delivered in Jessy Pinkman style, were cringy and didn't get any better or clearer when he repeated them 3 times. I love you guys and am sorry for writing this. But please tighten this show up a bit and get back to the previous high standards.

wow I agree 100% I can't even watch it anymore because of the long rants that repeated time after time. I too love NSF with all my heart but this, in my opinion does not rise to the quality that I grew accustomed to with NSF. I would not mind the length of it if it were more professional and more interactive with the audience by answering more question from the people watching you.

Tj's argument doesnt hold water with gov contracts at all. Old space mindset...boo old space. boo. Lol, example/casein point contractors lowball fixed price contracts to get the contract and then charge whatever they want after the fact. Example SLS block 1B tower. The companies already spent all the money they bid and they haven't built one piece of the tower. Checkmate...

Pulling from other programs or holding their funds to put towards new ones, is not only unacceptable it's 110% counter-productive. We're talking about a science that needs to be thought about in geological time. If you only look back a 100 years , you don't know shit. If your only going to fund a hundred years forward, you you're not gonna know shit. Everything we are doing needs to be thought in funding terms of millenias
