The Plymouth Valiant was never meant to be a muscle car. It was never meant to be fast, overly attractive or go around corners. Loved by grandparents and college professors alike, the Valiant was the go-to car for those who wanted smooth reliable transport. Owner Shannon Hudson bought this Valiant for $400.00 and after 20 years of ownership and a few different versions, built it into one of the coolest MOPAR A Bodies we've ever seen.

My absolute favourite video on youtube, watched this countless of times and still doesn't get tired of it. I'm 17 and will have my license in about 5 months, my father had a 67 valiant 100 with a big /6 just sitting where his garage is for 2 years until I finally asked him what his plans for the Valiant were, he told me he didn't had time to fix it that was his intensions when he bought it so I asked him what he will do with it. He said I'll sell it. My heart broke I told him I could help him fix it. He replied: "If you want it you can have it, but only if you promise to fix it up and don't you dare repaint it." I was completely stunned, i started planning right away asking what was wrong with the engine and all that. he said since it had been sitting for 2 years it would probably need a new engine since it still wasnt running when he bought it. I did know he had a 360 magnum in a shed that was supposed to go into a dodge dakota he owned so i asked him if I could buy the engine and do a sleeper build, he said sure as long as it looked rotten on the outside. A couple of months later the /6 and trans is out, seats are out, new engine mounts are almost finished and today some steel for the subframe connectors were picked up. So tomorrow I will start to build the subframe connectors and hopefully in the next 2 days and nights the engine will be test fitted.

Wow, a lot of similarities here: I had a '69 Valiant back in the late seventies. Paid a few hundred for it, swapped in a 360 from a wrecked Furry III, replaced the steering box for a lightweight one, ended up running high 12's. Mine was originally purchased by a police lieutenant and had the 273 2bbl and AC. AC never worked, much to the dismay of a devastatingly beautiful co-worker, but the engine was great. Only swapped it out for the displacement bump. My 360 put out about 370chp, but was a mild build that kept going years after the car was killed. The 2.4 SRT4 is an interesting choice, and can be built up to 600hp at the wheels on factory stock internals. The bottom end on these engines can handle a lot of power, and the stroker race version has been tested to 1,500hp. I own a mild naturally aspirated version that has been bumped up to about 200hp and was raced for a couple years. The engine now has 245,000 miles on it and has never been opened. However, if the only reason going to a 2.4 is for handling, there are other ways: I ran a skinned hood, glass fenders, front fenderwells cut out, battery moved to trunk, and I also removed the diagonal bumper supports. At the track I also took off the front bumper and installed a fiberglass air dam instead. The combo worked well and handled nicely, but not as flat as this one due to the lack of swaybars. But, my F/R weight distribution was closer to neutral. I retired the car after the 1983 Grand Nationals at Detroit Dragway.

I mean... Just listen to that thing. That engine sound is just addicting, no import, Euro or Japan will ever come close to the sound of an old American Classic Muscle Car. I love my WRX with it's 3 inch catless exhaust, has a deep tone for a 4 banger, but one day I'll buy an old muscle project car. I like cars that sound mean at idle :p

..you mentioned the 'Green Brick Valiant', which was built by Richard Ehrenberg of Mopar Action Magazine. That lil bugger ran in the One Lap Of America race series and went toe to toe (one yr it lost only to the Mosler Raptor, a carbon fiber special built race car that broke the series' rules) on road courses with the likes of Viper, C5 Vette's, and various foreign exotica, no foolin. It had a Mopar R block stroker running like 390ish cubes, 5 spd manual and a whole bag of tricks, not limited to: re-enforced k frame, oil accumulator, frame connectors, Tri-Y headers for perf and ground clearance, NOS, (this is just from memory, read about it 20 yrs ago!) a light weight..magnesium i want to say..Mopar 8 3/4" rear, etc. If you can find old issues of MA magazine featuring the Green Brick, you'll be in for a real treat of a story! & yeah, stock based suspension, inc. de-arched superstock leaf springs and t-bars, no 'Magnum Farce' (Mustang 2 based) rubbish, as Mopars aren't designed to run coil springs, it's a horrible idea! the CG is then higher and further fwd and structurally, a Mopar uni-body is simply not designed for coils springs!! And whyyy??? Torsion bars are so far superior! ok, rant over, i love your Valiant!!!

Joose Funny thing is that my Valiant is the same weight as a Neon and a Toyota Supra 5 speed bolts right up with an adaptor. If I had the $$$ to do it I probably would. The car would handle so much better with all that weight off of the nose. I have a 1997 Magnum 360 sitting on a stand that will probably be built up with alluminum cyl heads and around 480hp without the supercharger.

Mopar came out with the first Pony Car (Barracuda came out two weeks before the Mustang) and the first muscle car (1962 Plymouth Fury/Dart/Polara/Belvedere 413ci) and the first car built for performance and racing aka the Grand Daddy of muscle cars (1955 Chrysler 300 331 Hemi and later 392 Hemi). They also built more muscle cars and variety than there competitors. Barracuda/Cuda/Challenger/Dart/Demon/Duster/Charger/Challenger/Coronet/Fury/Valiant/SuperBird/SuperBee/RoadRunner/300/GTX/Scatpack/Polara/Belvedere and Im still missing a few there. They also built the first Sports Truck with the 1963 Dodge D100 with a 413 Max Wedge built to race and go fast, even coming with its own racing stripe.

As the previous owner of a Dodge 2.4L pushing 18 psi (390 ft lbs of torque at 2100 rpm) on factory SRT-4 internals and a factory first generation SRT-4 turbofold (The block came out of a '98 caravan. The only piece not OEM making these numbers in this Frankenstein configuration were the waste gate spring and the exhaust system,) all wrapped up in a 2,300lb first generation neon coupe chassis (take a breath) - please to jebus SRT swap the Valiant. My dad had a 70 340 Swinger Dart when he was my age. Long before my Mom met my Dad, she was driving a Valiant coupe at the same age... getting a handle on my brand loyalty at the time? I've since moved on and I'm pretty disheartened with the Dodge group and Ralph Gilles these days... I would still love to see that old(ish) Iron Chrysler block with a Lamborghini developed 16 valve head sitting between the rails of an A body "under pressure." My Dad inevitably had to sell his Dart, with the built block, shaved heads, racing transmission... etc. Watching him drop the clutch and spin two tires to 90 mph in my built and boosted little neon after years and years of driving pickup trucks to construction sites to feed our family - you could tell he was finally home. The blocks are bulletproof. Keep your EGT, water temps, and oil pressure in check - and it'll never die.

There's Plymouth Scamp being shown around the CA car shows that is even more incredible in the sense of high horsepower, incredible reliability, and handling. The owner chose the Globally known bad ass import motor the Toyota 2JZ-GTE Twin Turbo Inline Six Cylinder Dual Overhead Cam powerhouse engine. Next Jose Valle at Kaizen Motorsports removed the stock twin turbo and went big single turbo. The car is progressing beautifully, and much more is to come in the handling department. This would be a huge success to see it featured on this awesome channel.

Great build of a model even I forget. Or at least I forget that the '69 Valiant looked more like the '70-72 than the '67-68 so for one year they built the 2-door sedan with a Duster-like face.

I wan to see a car on bug muscle with a V10 or V12. V8's are great but they are vastly oversaturated in rebuilt/redone cars. We need to see variance!

It's funny, but just as he was stating that this guy was thinking of taking out the V8, I was thinking that it would be neat to see a dual-turbo'ed 4-cylinder in the Valiant. Lo and behold, the next statement he made was of putting a clown 4-cylinder in it.

Spearfisher1970 I was trying to figure out where the cut off would be for making it worthwhile. I was thinking about a Mustang project with a 2.0L Ecoboost or a 5.0L V8. The Ecoboost engine is about 75 pounds lighter, but it's down by 168hp. Not sure if it's worth the effort. For comparison, the 3.5L Ecoboost V6 is 15 pounds heavier than the V8.
@Spearfisher1970
@Spearfisher1970 10 лет назад
vipergtsrgt1 I'm really not sure. Between turbo boxer engines, the 2015 turbo 2.3L Mustang engine (which, if built correctly and buffed, might be able to put out goo numbers) and such... I would hope that some platform would both give light weight, hopefully a lower center of gravity, and nearly the same HP.
@squeakyfeet1497
@squeakyfeet1497 10 лет назад
vipergtsrgt1 Ecoboost wouldn't even be worth it IMO. Coyote 5.0 will crank out 500 hp without even touching the heads or cams. Easy 430+ rwhp with bolt-ons, 91 octane.

demariojason wait I have a Veloster...don't knock the Hyundai...lol. Seriously, my Veloster is a very nice vehicle with lots of great gear and styling for a VERY cheap price, but I am not kidding myself. It is fun to drive, but is by no means a fast car. Maybe once the warranty is up I will rebuild it into something cool with my son.

LoL yeah I know! Hyundai is actually a cool manufacture,...I really have no problems with em. And yeah a co worker at my job has a Red Veloster, I like the first gens more so than when they changed them recently....
@verigone2677
@verigone2677 10 лет назад
demariojason Hyundai sure has come a long way in the last 10 years. I can't wait to see what they do with the second generation of Velosters...I am guessing a 2.0l option or one without the 3rd door. The next Genesis is probably going to be pretty sweet as well. If they keep cramming that much tech into the Kias and Hyundais we will see the Koreans taking the mantle fully from the Japanese makers.

In Australia they came in a 6 cylinder with triple Weber carbs and beat all the v8's at the time so they've always been popular here but then again we are the sort of people to put 5ltr fuel injected v8's in our family wagons so what do we know.

The neon motor would be interesting. To all say keep the v8, I hear you but that's a lot of weight off the nose. IF your wanting it to handle this would make a huge difference and just hearing that old valiant pop and snort from the turbos and wastegates would be sick.
@SashaZvyagin
@SashaZvyagin 10 лет назад
I agree. I had a turbo'd 1st gen Neon with a 2.4 engine out of a stratus, and that powerplant can definitely do some damage. Lots of low-end torque, and there are tons of em roaming the streets that are 400+ HP.

I think the Neon motor idea is a great one, and it shows that the owner is nicely open-minded and cares about having a great car rather than only about appearances. I'm sure the 360 is a lovely thing to drive around, but why _not_ look at alternatives? Ford, FWIW, sold their large Australian RWD sedan (the Falcon) with an optional turbo 4cyl engine, where traditionally the powerplants have all been inline-6 and V8 units. I'm hearing that for all the derision, the Ecoboost Falcon is a very good car.
