Am really enjoying your videos. I don't have an allotment, but have found loads of good tips. I'm 72 and have never done any gardening. I've built a 3m raised bed in my very small garden and am really looking forward to growing something.
Thought this video and your others were very informative and not judgmental of the amateur allotment plot holder. Also giving many different options to suit all budgets and styles was really helpful. Thank you 😊
Fantastic tips and advice and a great channel. Having only just acquired my first allotment, I'm finding your videos extremely helpful. Keep up the great work. Many thanks.
I've wanted to comment for so long (shy) but this is the best video I've ever seen to a beginner, I'm going to share on my Facebook group hope that's ok, and thanks for your videos 🥰
Hi Steve, I didn't realise slugs would be in the compost as I was so careful with my trays and seeds. I noticed last week, the wee seedlings weren't coming on. Watched one of ur videos, you mentioned slugs, and sure enough, didn't I have a few slugs having a field day on my young plants. Thanks for the heads up cause I would have missed that 🙄
Over the years I have seen quite a few new gardeners on our site who don't really know how to start, they eventually give the plot up. That is what inspired this series of videos...Steve...👍
@@GreenSideUp My plot was messy and looked unmanageable when I first got and it's not quite a paradise yet but it's in a better state than when I got my hands on it. If I had gave up it would still been in the mess I got it. Giving up isn't part of my personality.
Great video Steve. I have some plastic sheeting so will start getting the soil warmed. Also with the idea of the bricks and polythene, you have saved me a few quid. I want to make a cold frame from timber, but not been able to repurpose any and was contemplating buy some, but that part of the video reminded me that I have around 200 bricks behind the shed so will be making a brick cold frame. Keep up the great content Steve.
Hi Steve! I have just got myself a new allotment plot in Brampton near Carlisle and your "Start a new allotment plot" series has really helped me gather tips and knowledge on where to begin. I only got it Sunday gone and I've been down there clearing the land (lots of docks and weeds) and I should be ready to get going with turning the soil this weekend. Any tips on this? I've thought about no dig, but I'm wanting to turn the entire plot over before laying out a solid plan of where everything is going to go. Keep up the good work 👍
Great tips Steve. I could start with the bricks and plastic while I'm having a go at making a hot box. I've got some suitable wood that I got from a skip. I'm going to go back and take a look at your other videos. 🌱Judi
Cheers Steve , great ideas for the cold frames, this weekend job clean the greenhouse its only a small 6ft x 4ft but it will do for the garden & veggie boarders
Steve, thank you very much for the tips for beginners. As you know I've just started my allotment plot and going through exactly the things you mentioned. Keep em coming, I can do with all the help I can get. Thank you again.
Hi Steve That was an excellent video 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 I've also used the clear plastic box and lid as a mini green house for potted up plants that still need a little extra protection until they have put on a little bit more growth (also as emergency protection when you run out of greenhouse space)
Perfect timing for this video Steve. Acquired my plot today. It's a 5m x 10m plot of grass, so got a blank canvas to work with (and quite a bit of digging 😲 ) This video has given me some ideas to get me started. Thank you 👍
Hi Steve, I love your wing nut framing panels I did say last year I was going to build some but unfortunately I’ve not got round to it yet, but I will.
Maybe you need to consider growing them under a colche tunnel or have you tried growing garlic and onions near them because carrot fly don't like any of the plants that are part of the allium family (that is any plants that are related to onions) for example chives, leeks, spring onions etc. and onion fly doesn't like carrots.
I did not show it in the video, but I have more of those hotboxes, shorter in height but covered in environmesh to grow carrots in. Or as David says try the companion planting also. MY carrots in the tunnel are sown late to avoid the last cycle of carrot fly...Steve...😊
