thank you very much for taking the time to teach this old dog new tricks. 2 weeks ago i couldn't draw a stick figure, now im doing landscapes and eyes, lol. noses are a pain tho.
After seeing hundreds of videos, I can confidently say that Paul's teaching style is the best. He has unique ability to hand hold and take the novice learner along with him on to the learning journey. I was looking for a artist who is also a great teacher. Paul literally opens up the mechanics of drawing from the basics. No fluff, straight dive into to the drawing. Its like seeing the piece of the video, pause, practice what Paul says and then move to the next part. Thanks a bunch Paul for all your efforts in making these lovely tutorial videos for beginners.
This guy is jus so inconceivably better than my art teachers who told me to "just draw" like: how do you play basketball? "throw the ball in the hoop" ok but how do that? there's simply no comparison because you sir teach me and do it well, "real" teachers meanwhile make me hate the subject, thank you for this invaluable resource.
Best intro to drawing I've seen and I have watched many!! No messing around he gets straight to it. Draw what he draws as you get good practice and you can experience the difference between using edges, outlines and shading 'properly'.
Wow after 10 years this video is still very useful to me thank you for sharing, is anyone looking for this video after 10 years like me please give me a hand
I'm a retired expat living in SE Asia and playing golf at least 3 days a week. Always wanted to draw and just never found the time. I've subscribed to a number of online courses recently and must say that I haven't found them that good. However, I am delighted to say that this morning I found your videos on You Tube and love them. Thank you for the inspiration.
It's been 7 years that you've shared this lecture but for me it is like yesterday because i've just started to studying them. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, experience !
My 3rd grade students love your videos! We are using them in class to help us become better at our art. Your videos help us relax, and I truly believe art is something that needs to be done more in the classroom. Thank you for posting these!
You are very welcome. Give your children a 'high five' from me and tell them to keep practicing and they'll produce wonderful art work work. Cheers Paul
This is fantastic! I don't know how many drawing videos I have watched and not one of them talked about the difference between edges and outlines, and they make such a huge difference too! Thank you for the video! :)
This was VERY helpful Paul. Most art classes & courses seem to simply assume that one already knows the difference between an outline and an edge. Not so for most beginners. Thanks for clarifying this most important concept!
Hi Paul, I have no words for the way you are teaching us. Its really calm and unique. I had no idea how to start. But now I have got my starting point. Thank you for your time.
This is such a great tutorial. I remember years ago my frustration after I drew what I felt was an amazing still life drawing in an art class I was taking. As the teacher walked around she looked at mine and said "Oh how wonderful! Now just get rid of the lines." and walked off. She offered no explanation as to how I was to do this and figuring it out for myself was so difficult. I thought to myself, "How can I get rid of the lines? It's how you can tell the drawing is there!" I wish she had been able to offer me an explanation as clear and concise as yours. Now that my son wants to learn drawing I'm definitely subscribing to your channel, as I am not a teacher.
Thank you very much for providing us with such great instruction. With your help, I was able to draw my first tin and it came out 10x better than I ever thought it would.
Really pleased you like the video, I hope it helps you become a great artist. Perhaps you could tell your friends about my channel: ru-vid.com Many thanks Paul
thanks very much finally a good tutorial about pencil drawing for beginners cause al i see from other channel are ppl talking about the pencils hb h and bla bla finally something useful. subed and liked
Thank you for making this video for us beginners! I've always wasted my time pondering over where to start but I've finally taken my first step! Hopefully one day I'll look back at this day and remember what an amazing experience it was learning from youtube videos.
After sayong ' I am not good at drawin' , I just decided to change and learn. And here I am starting thanks to your very well explained video. Thank you very much.
I’ve been having a bad depression and discovered that I have lost interest in art.. It drives me crazy how something that used to give me life doesn’t do it for me anymore.. And I’m trying to fall in love with art again using this series, since it helped me learn a long time ago..
Nice video, Paul. Short, informative and simple. After nearly 30 years since I drew or painted I'm feeling the urge to start again and your video is a great reminder of old skills and I'm learning a few new ones too.
Thanks mate for the help Ye see I didn’t do art as a subject I didn’t really know what to do back then a year go But I needed help badly with my art With everything I ain’t no master I kinda learnt from myself I gave up So I decided to use RU-vid to help then I found this It’s very helpful mate How could anyone dislike the video it’s Really helpful It even helped a Really stupid dyslexic person like me Which I’m amazed It took me months to learn by myself And I really couldn’t understand what I was trying to do either Mate this is like art class with my schools art teacher She can teach Almost everyone art properly If they put in the effort
Wow, no one has written a poem to me before, thanks mate. That really is a great effort . You know drawing is mostly about having the confidence to have a go. If my video has helped you, even in a small way, that is wonderful to know. Keep drawing and good luck with all your art work including your poetry. Cheers Paul
Thanks for the tutorial man! I recently have had an urge to start drawing at the age of 22 and this is really helping me out. I'm starting to love how to draw!
That's great, drawing is a wonderful thing to do and what's really amazing about it is we all draw slightly differently. It would be boring if everything ended up looking like a photo. Cheers Paul
I try to explain things in simple steps, some videos I see are so fast it is impossible to learn anything from them. Good luck with your drawing. Cheers Paul
+RedStingBlogs Yes, you see, there are edges everywhere and they make your drawings look so much better that just outlines. Good luck with your drawing, become the artist you always wanted to be!!
Thank you Paul for this video. I was searching on YT where to find the videos of very basic shading and I found all of them very tough and complex for beginners like me. Keep making videos like this in the future! :)
For starters your voice is amazing. You should be in BBC radio plays. Secondly: Your ENERGY. Makes it all the worthwhile to watch besides the information. I've been retraining my hand to break out out bad habits (plus I've been using the computer too much, and need to get back to paper). I periodically watch different videos on the basics. And this, by far, is one of my favorites ever.
Wow, BBC radio plays never thought of that. Thanks for your kind comments and I know what you mean about computers, no matter what they do, it's not the same as using a pencil and paper. Good luck with your drawing. Cheers Paul
Yeah, why not put together a V.O. demo to see what could happen. And thank you for the good wishes. Already from watching your video from last night, my shading got a bit better. I prefer woodless pencils because...I dunno. They just feel magical, and there's more size range
Thank you, your comment is much appreciated. Good luck with your drawing and please tell your friends about my channel if you can, that would be wonderful. Many thanks Paul
as i'm browsing on FB i saw a post about a drawing then i asked the guy if he can teach me he tells me to watch youtube videos because that's where he started and by far this video is the one i find very useful :)
Thanks for a great tutorial. I have always loved art especially pencil drawings. My main problem is that my hand shakes a lot so its difficult to be very good at it.
gus kings You have to take advantage of the hand shakes. You simply create a different type of line to other people, which makes your lines unique. Celebrate that. Andy Warhol used to draw on wet paper with an ink pen to create blotched lines because he wanted to be different. If he can do it .... Good luck with your drawing. Cheers Paul
Finally a good tutorials series on youtube !. Thank you very much for sharing that. Do you draw on any paper or on a certain type? and what type is more suitable for a beginner?
+Abd El-Rahman Naser Hi, thanks for your kind comments. I do all the drawing tutorials on 100 lb cartridge paper which is fairly standard. It would be fine for beginners. If I was drawing to exhibit, I would use a weightier paper. I hope that helps. Cheers Paul
Thank you for sharing your well-illustrated and easy to understand techniques. Got myself a simple drawing set and am about to replay this video and see if there really is an artist hiding within. Cheers!
thank you so much for this video. I never knew about hand positioning for drawing and it makes so much difference! Im teaching myself to draw and its much easier now that my hand is positioning the pencil correctly! on another note my wrist is now sore hahah practice practice practicee
I knew when I saw the blue suspenders that youd be my art basics teacher. Ive natural talent but in my 40 years of live never used youtube for more than heavy metal songs and cat videos. Wouldve never guessed quality instruction could be found online.
Glad you like the 'suspenders' or braces as we call them - in England suspenders are what women use to hold up their stockings! Really pleased you like my videos. Good luck with your drawing. Cheers Paul
I'm super glad I found this video. Despite having done pencil art for 8 years, I have little to no experience shading. I felt my brain expand at that edge part. It's super helpful!
No idea. It depends on your talent, how hard you work, whether you are determined, how much you practice, the teaching you receive etc, etc, etc. Cheers Paul
I'm trying to draw my mom. She falls asleep in the chair a lot now that she's older with empty beer cans on her lap and her tongue hangs out. I really wanna capture the essence of my sleeping mom.
I am so thankful for this. I gave up drawing with actual rules and techniques in junior high when I got bullied over my art and I'm just now wanting to take it seriously again. I forgot what to do and I lost a lot of skill due to health issues so this is very helpful. Thank you so much.
+Bekah Chu Really pleased you are back into drawing and glad the video helped in a small way. It's great you have overcome the bullies and the health issues, its a great future out there. Cheers Paul
