Special Announcement!!! -- I have my offshore boat back! That video is dropping shortly and I already have fishing videos in the works! We're finally back in action and it's time to get back to what we're all here for. SCREAMING FISH ON! Thank you all for keeping me motivated while my boat was down the past 6 months and the content was slow. I'm finally excited to sit down and edit footage again knowing all the great adventures that are ahead of us. I went from having 0 boats to having 2 boats! It's game onnn baby
@@SouthFloridaFishingChannel I guess the more you get into a restoration you keep finding more things that need to be done. Kind of like a rabbit hole.
Awesome job man. Never thought I’d spend hour and 40 minutes of my life watching something like this but damn was I hooked. Now u have me over here on Facebook market looking for a project of my own👍🏽
Yeah man. I've been hooked watching all your videos. Literally for a week. I've watched almost all of them in a week. Straight binge watching. So wanna win a trip to fish with you.
Good video about rebuilding an old boat. 45 years ago my father and i went in together on an old 13’ boston whaler. We bought is in early April , go it home and had to repaint the damaged gel coat, replace the rotten wooden side console and reposed it with a 25 hp evinrude. Being 15 years old I had time to do all of that after school and on weekends, We finished in time to test drive it on Memorial Day. We towed it from Maryland to the my aunt’s condo in Hollywood, FL (and then down to the keys for numerous snorkeling trips). Your build reminded me of that old whaler .
@@SouthFloridaFishingChannel I kept that boat for 15 years and eventually refit it again with a 65hp mercury engine. It would run about 40 mph and even pulled water skiers! I traded it in on a new Ski Brendella inboard ski boat in 1990 I have since purchased and rebuilt a 1978 Jon Dory's 16’ skiff with a 35 hp merc, it is about same size of the whaler but is a bit faster cause it has a flat bottom.
as someone whos done vinyl for 28 years i was rolling when ya was laying em and i felt your pain when it slipped!!! rofl i did one yrs ago sold it and regretted it ever since!!! lot of work goes into restoring one !!! looks like you did it to last my friend great job looks awesome!!!
Yo! Extremely, awesomely, really nicely done!! I mean, seriously! I've never been so taken in and pleased by a video like this one did. You took your time, did touch ups, figured stuff out as you went. My brother and I are waiting for our new jon boat to come in to replace our '89. Now, I've got a whole new outlook on what to do with the old one, very similar condition issues. I honestly watched every minute of this video and ate up all the info you packed into it. Thank you soo very much! Again, truly, honestly well done job all the way around.
i fell asleep for about half of the video, but that's because i have been working hard lately and have been very sleep deprived. i loved what i saw, and really loved getting a little nap, so thanks!
Hey really enjoyed the video , I've never been to the keys till this March and first thing I thought was I'm not flying next time I'm driving and pulling my john boat, your living a good life it looks like , keep it up and good fishing 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍👍👍
Awesome job with the Jon Boat restoration project. My dad had three Jon boats and a fiberglass V-hull when I was a kid but never done anything like this to make them more comfortable. The first one was made of plywood which was constructed really well but only had paint since epoxy wasn't available way back then and spent its last few years rotting away in the backyard after he got his first aluminum j-boat which he sold or gave away a few years later. Then he bought a used j-boat that was covered in tar on the bottom to prevent leaks but it didn't work that well, then he finally bought a used fiberglass V-hull which was fine but he only used it once and then spent about 20 years sitting on a trailer in the backyard until he gave it to my brother who uses it to this day. For a project that big, I would've went epoxy from the beginning. The can spray-paint method I would use on small projects like patio furniture or something but not a boat. Being retired Navy, I would be tempted to go with haze grey on the outside, red on the bottom, with a black water line, dark grey on the deck with a three or four inch black border on the sides up from the deck, white on the handholds and other fixtures, and do what you did to the inside with the tan, cushions, and everything else.
I've got a14 foot ALUMA CRAFT v-hull sitting in my drive way. It's been in the family all these years. It's been fished in from Northern Canada, all the way to the Southern Everglades in Florida. A ton of fish have been caught in this boat as well.
I love your video. Thank you. It was brilliant that you put a timeline on different steps. As I am just replacing plywood transom on my aluminum boat I could go right to it for a refresher. Well done
🙏, not sure if anyone else has commented on the coin found but it was an old tradition to place a coin under a mast when a sail ship was built. This was some sort of a protection myth. Look it up to see exactly why. I have enjoyed the odd bit of humour. Nice job on the restoration 😎
John boat looks great man! Finishing up my 89' Boston Whaler for back waters here in SWFL🤙🏼🎣 lot's of work but it most definitely paid off & THANKS I learned sooo much, I can't wait to do some of this to my own boat now
Friggin Amazing Heiko !! Nice work !! Can't wait to watch some Jon boat adventures !! I really appreciate the special care and time you put into this project.
thats a bad ass back country boat, you did better job on it than probably half of the shops in FL would have done. Nobody said it but i see the big boat lurking at the dock
The next time gueing down these large pieces of foam, put some wood or metal strips on the glue and put the foam on top so it does not touch the glue yet. Then line-up the foam and remove the strips one by one. This will give a perfect fit without the worry of starting at a wrong angle.
I was in St Pete a couple of weeks ago and fishing was awesome. I did catch something I never caught before....a small hammer head. Man what a fight. I cant wait till I can live near the ocean again. Ohio has good lakes but hard to beat the ocean.
Some cringy moments at first, but like you said.. if we know you, we know you like to learn the hardway!! 😛 this project was awesome, you jumped in and did what you had to do, and ultimately fixed anything that was cringy!! Really cool you documented the whole process in one vid!! Im watching your vid instead of working on my own boat .. lol 😆
Tech tip: do the beige part first then tape off bottom to do the black part. That way you only have to tape once. Also a super slick surface will create drag in the water. A rough texture will create tiny air bubbles reducing drag allowing the boat to cut thru the water more efficiently.
Great video it was so interesting that it didn't seem to be a long video. Can't wait to see you fishing in it. Now I'm going to look for a jon boat to restore myself, one difference I'm going to do is make a place for a trolling motor but I'm definitely going to copy yours.
Those "elephant feet" were getting in the way when you were moving the boat. 😂🤣😂 Seriously though, I've really enjoyed this video, I want a Jon boat to rehab now. 👍
Started looking for a small 12-14ft Jon boat last week. After looking around, I had expected to spend around $3-5k. Mentioned it to a few coworkers, told them to keep their eyes open for something on the side of the road. One of my coworkers said his girlfriend's father had a boat just sitting in the yard and his wife had been up his ass to get rid of it. Drove out to get it that night... Ended up with a 12ft Jon boat with two trolling motors for free; Boat doesn't leak a drop of water and the trolling motors both work great!
Been away for 7 days. At a rifle shoot in eastern MONTANA... It's good to come back to see a video from you. !!! Good video Heiko. like always ... Thank you Frank from montana.....
👏 Very nice. I have the same Jon boat (not a Grizzly but, ya know) & need to do...ALL OF THAT to it, lol. Your vid is really gonna help (already has- inspiration🤘). Thank you for documenting every step/detail of restoration from beginning to end🙏 It is MUCH appreciated. Cheers & tight lines!
I’m currently building a jon boat as well! Looks great. Been thinking of what paint to use and I think you probably used the best thing to use. I will be buying some for my build for sure!
My Jon boat has started leaking so I am in process of stripping bottom to apply new Fasco coating. But I discovered something I thought you might like. I purchased a pressure washer sand blasting kit. It attaches to the wand on a pressure washer. It works with play sand it’s available from Amazon for 30 bucks. It sucks the play sand or beads up and takes it down to bare metal. I did the entire outer Hull in 1.5 hours. The aluminum doesn’t get hot the metal retains its proper shape and strength. After watching your video and the time u we’re having stripping the paint. I sought out different methods to achieve the smooth bare clean hull. Keep up the great vids brother Tightlines from the Outerbanks of North Carolina!
Nice work dude. That rig is going to be sweet. When you started spraying those wood floors with the truck bed liner I was thinking to myself, he should just use epoxy, lol. Some nice cameos by Capt. Elliot, aka, the luckiest cat ever. Need to get another SFFC shirt. Lost the first one I had.
i agree with you about the Jon Boat. I'm up here in Northern Ontario and bought a basically new 1236 for $600. I paid more then i maybe should have, but i knew the owner and didn't want to try and get him down. The harder thing to find is a decent motor for a fair price!! Great video and man you did a wicked job!!
Thanks for this excellent video as I now find myself in the "same boat"...was looking for a 12-14' when I saw a 16' with a motor on a nice trailer at then of a driveway...1987 Polar Kraft 1648...2010 Tohatsu on a perfect trailer...$900! Needs some repair to the transom but the trailer and motor are worth more than the purchase price... Will be repairing and updateing the boat over the next few months...
I built a small mud boat last year for hunting with a free boat that came with my house, definitely didn't document it in this much detail but man they are fun to build! This thing looks amazing
This was a great video. I think every young man or woman should watch it. You show how patience, imagination, thinking through problems, and elbow grease can solve almost any problem. With effort comes rewards. Today some would call this “white privilege”.
I wonder if a sand blaster would have sped up the paint removal/sanding. I've never done it. Just thinking out loud. Might take on a similar project. Thanks for the video.
Good job on the boat brother! I remember when my wife and I stripped all the paint off our jon boat but ours was a 1976 that had more layers of paint on it Lol! Some advice on the stripper, you can thin the stripper with a slow dissolving solvent and spray it on with a pump sprayer and it covers so nice and even to where the paint starts literally falling off the boat. Enjoyed the video brother!
