Oh goodness! Having safety gloves is important for myself as I sometimes loose track of where my hands are the more I focus in on my projects. While they arent 100% protection, they have made what could have been serious injuries to minor cuts just needing a bandaid

the only time i ever whittled was about 3 weeks ago, I made a little spatula for raticide paste for some traps, using a box cutter and a tiny scrap of fir from the neighbor's attic. Those 5 minutes of whittling calmed me more than any meds or meditation technique my therapist suggested. now I'm all about watching youtube and buying a knife and whittling the crap of any wood I find while imagining said wood to be my boss

I whittled a wooden coat hanger that i could place into metal holes at work and keep my jacket clean. I used pieces that chipped off pallets in the warehouse and i went through quite a few of them. Seeing this now. I’m seeing a lot of the techniques you used are very similar to what i would do and it almost came naturally with doing it so much. Just thought that was interesting.

It's good that you show your 'war carving' wounds. I have been carving for better than 25 years on and off, and always find new ways to get cut while carving in places I thought never existed...lol! It's not that carving is a risky thing, it's that 'human nature' of bravado takes over. Silly things when you drop your guard. I think because I take my time now and more so 'a little wiser', I don't get 'war carving' wounds as much.

Cheaper blades are good for beginners because they teach you how to Sharpen your tools. Sharpening is one of the most important things you can learn if you want to enjoy working with wood whether it be whittling or anything else. This is my advice for anybody who wants to start with woodwork.

Thanks for the valuable info! 😁

I am pretty smart and have pretty good intuition; I was also in Boy Scouts a few years ago, so I have a few skills that either just come naturally, or are muscle memory. I have only cut myself once while working on a project of mine, and that was because I was doing something that I couldn’t see a risk in doing. I was digging out a know in the stick I had, and what I was doing was sticking my blade in and spinning it around (dull swiss). I didn’t realize how the blade would be able to jump out and angle towards me, and it did so and hit my left thumb. I started bleeding lightly, and the knife did little damage. I know I may have gotten lucky. My point being: be careful with what you do, and realize that even if you do have good intuition and or skills, things can and still will go wrong, so be prepared and wary of what you are doing. If I understood the risks, then I would have payed more attention, and would have been ready to stop my hand and the blade from moving the best that I could. Instead, I grew lax, and was not prepared. Anyways, I know that what I have said could be a little bit of a downer, but I just wanted to reflect some. Also, I want everyone who reads this to know that I do not hold myself or my skills above others. I love you all

I've always made a distinction between whittling and carving where stuff like this is carving and whittling is just going at whatever stick is handy with your pocket knife to pass the time, so the more specialized knives and proper wood blanks are a surprise to se in a whittling video.

I started wood carving and whittling a while ago And can confirm Leathermans and Swiss Army knives are good for beginners so some of the pointers he has are correct however if you’re actually gonna wheel some thing like an object say a knife or anything else wear safety gloves I’ve gotten like three cuts so wear safety

I just came across this very good inspirational video and wanted to share - I am not whittling at all, just thought about it and saw the Victorinox. I use the Swisschamp for 15 years or more, and used it many times for many hobbies I do. The lock on the blade (Slip Joint I think?) is VERY dangerous (Like he said, no matter how good you are) and you should think about it before trying to start with it, that it because it is readily available most of the time, and you dont know how to hold a blade (or think you know) and next up is the blade closed on you with great force and that's...that's really bad. I did get bit a few times in my life but since I got the blade snap at me because I was probably an idiot, looking at the closed knife with my finger 2mm away for its path...Damn, please be careful guys, and thank you sir for the great video.

Thanks for the video, I've not started whittling yet, but this was a very helpful primer. It's also given me the confidence to have a go at sharpening my swiss army knives too.

This guy is a genius so professional and doesn’t skip any details. Must say this is the best utube video that I have seen.you could learn so much from this man. Some on here tell you their life story before they begin, others can be talented but the music or voices end up giving me a migraine. THANK YOU for sharing your talent and what a wonderful teacher you would make ( if you are not already) . Angie 😊🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Fantastic introduction to whittling! I almost bought the wrong knife before seeing this. I'll get the flexcut (which is also a third of the price). Thanks and keep up the great work!

A family member recently died and I happened to get some carved things. One was a bear and what do you know it looks exactly like the one in this thumbnail. I'm glad I ran into this video this morning. Right when I thought I was going to have a rough day.

Great video. I've been wanting to get into whittling and bought some books, but you videos help out more where the books lack explanation. I was going to start buying the tools but was hesitant on which brands, but your video helped out a lot and I have ordered the knife, basswood and strop. Thank you.

that SAK is a Camper model and totally has a saw. I have the same one. It's not exactly intuitive, but you open it from the end of the tool rather than from the side. Just learned there was a pin on mine - crazy how many features they pack into these things.
