It was only supposed to last 3-5 years and it’s been orbiting for 30. Neil deGrasse Tyson celebrates the Hubble Space Telescopes 30th anniversary with comic co-host Chuck Nice and Hubble senior project scientist Jennifer Wiseman, PhD.
You’ll learn how proposals are selected to receive telescope time. Jennifer tells us about “director discretionary time” which allows the director of the Space Telescope Science Institute to allot time for ideas and research for larger projects or projects that might not be otherwise considered in the general selection process. Jennifer tells us about an instance when director discretionary time allowed for Hubble to be pointed at “nowhere” - resulting in the Hubble Deep Field image, one of the most iconic images Hubble has ever taken. Jennifer also explains how long an idea can take from proposal to final publication.
You’ll learn about the Hubble science team’s massive data archive that’s open for everyone. Explore some of Hubble’s most interesting discoveries. Discover more about Hubble’s work on finding supermassive black holes in the center of galaxies. We also explore the work researching the expansion of the universe.
We ponder what the most important fields of discovery will be over the next decade. You’ll find out about Hubble’s collaborative work alongside the Juno probe to Jupiter and the New Horizons probe that went to, and past, Pluto. We also discuss the exciting world of exoplanets. Lastly, Jennifer reveals how long she thinks Hubble can stay in orbit and whether the telescope could ever be sold to a private company. All that, plus, Jennifer shares her favorite Hubble discovery over the past 30 years!

Way too many people hating on Chuck for this episode! I don't think people quite appreciate the pressure he's under to be the comic relief on a show like this. For him this isn't just a fun time; it's also a paycheck. If only he could sit there as the full-time co-host and be treated with the same dignity as one of the guests, then perhaps he wouldn't feel so pressured to always be "on". Just as he may oversell some of his jokes, I think Chuck has a serious tendency to undersell his own intelligence. He's clearly a brilliant individual who loves science. He's also an excellent human being, so let's take it easy on him. It isn't like Jennifer was exactly brimming with personality. I don't say that to be disrespectful, truly, but part of what I love about StarTalk is that it is every bit as passionate and entertaining as it is educational. While it isn't the guest's job to perform for the cameras, there is something to being on a video/radio program that should inspire a little energy. She was brilliant nonetheless, and I still very much loved this episode, but to put the awkwardness all on my man Chuck is just not fair. He asked great questions and StarTalk would not be the same without him!

totally agree. It will cost a fortune, but this is something we just have to do, the contribution to the science community and to human civilization as a whole cannot be understated. Hubble most be preserved. We just need to build a container with heat shield and parachutes and go up and secure it. This could maybe even be crowdfunded, though it's going to be very expensive.

It trips me out every time I think. That when my grandparents were in school. The Andromeda Galaxy wasn’t discovered. Until Hubble found it. Increasing the size of the universe. That wasn’t that long ago. I remember the first time I saw a picture of the Andromeda Galaxy. It was a very grainy black and white photo in 1976. In a older used Encyclopedia Britanica.

900 degrees F melts lead , Co2 atmosphere crushing density, active volcanoes , apparently a very nice upper atmosphere around 70-90 F, Might have floating microbes I think it has iron core but no plate tektonics, It must have magnetic field or atmosphere would be stripped away. thats all I know
@nohara7633
@nohara7633 3 года назад
@@muddshshshark no magnetic field, so lots of the lighter gasses stripped from the atmosphere and you missed out sulphuric acid clouds n rain (realy concentrated acid) but the acid rain never reaches the ground cos it boils away a mile from the surface and at the very top of Venus's mountains, beneath the thick clouds, is a layer of snow. But since it's so hot on Venus, snow as we know it can't exist. Instead, the snow capped mountains are capped with two types of metal: galena and bismuthinite oh and its rotation is slow and backward, the day ends up longer than the year

One may be deep space, one may be a full northern sky, one may be inferred, etc. Then be able to use that on a ball bearing type of deal so we can look all around and also use whichever lense we want.

Just remember, late is not never. Below is a related thought I have held for some time. Feel free to ignore it. lol The important part is, you made the effort. The effort to perhaps learn or know more means so much more than I think anyone else realizes. So many directly refuse to learn, much less make any effort to do so. MY professor never judged those who were late. As long as the drive to learn was there, he helped them catch up.
