Wanna talk to animals? On this episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice are answering fan-submitted Cosmic Queries on interspecies communication with Diana Reiss, PhD, Cognitive Psychology Professor and Marine Mammal Scientist.
Is it possible to talk to animals? We’re here to find out. Diana tells us about her recent work that looks to use new technologies to bridge the gap between communicating with other species. You’ll learn why the first step is defining what communication means. What makes something a language? Diana fills us in on her background researching dolphins, and we compare a dolphin’s brain to a human’s brain.
We discuss the film The Cove and the importance of using science to raise awareness. Then, we dive into the film Arrival and how it demonstrates appropriate steps to establish communication with another species. Diana tells us why establishing a common knowledge is vital. Then, we ask, would atoms and molecules look the same to everyone in the universe?
Explore why imitation can be a vital tool to help start communicating. Diana gives us insight into her first encounter with a dolphin mind. We discuss non-verbal forms of communication and how species communicate with themselves. Diana also tells us about the underwater keyboard and “touch” screen created for communicating with dolphins or, as Chuck calls it, the giant iPad for dolphins.
We investigate if animals have different “dialects” based on their geographic location. Lastly, can math be used as a universal language? All that, plus, we ponder if we’ll ever be able to fully understand animal communication.
Thanks to our Patrons Caralee Wahab, Tracy S. Skrabut, Ivan Perez, Joshua Torres, Garrett Jay, Leon Galante, Tyler Miller, and Pat Mallon for supporting us this week.

I came out my front door once and there was two squirrels I could see. One was standing in a tree staring intently at the hood of my truck. The other was running frantically around my truck. The one in the tree looked at me and then looked back at the truck. The only thing I could think was "There's a third squirrel stuck under the hood," So rather than turn the truck on I opened up the hood and sure enough a third squirrel now able to see its way out booked it from my truck and all three left. It felt like such a surreal moment.

The "co-" in "communication" means it's a two-way street. Before we can expect other animals (non-humans) to understand us, we need to understand their language and mannerisms first. It also means we'll have to adjust the way in which we view other species and our own supposed superiority since the denotation of "co-" is "shared", implying equality. Fascinating stuff.

He knows how to tell me when he's hungry, or what he likes. He has so much potential. Is there a missing sensory from both of us that prevents the flow of introspecies communication?

We absolutely have conversations with animals. It just doesn't involve words because they don't speak English. The animals of this world are incredibly intelligent in ways that you cannot possibly even understand. It is morphology mostly precludes general conversation. When humans do not speak the same language body language can often be used to convey meaning without verbal language. This would however be impossible with a whale regardless of how intelligent the whale is because it lacks the morphology capable of portraying intelligence in a way that humans can understand. A whale as the capability of understanding the ocean in a way that a human could never hope to. Birds can see a light from a city 200 miles away. Bears can smell what colour shoes you have from 10 miles away. They are intelligent in ways that we could not possibly hope to match.

I was disappointed with Neil's constant joking about "how can you ask to save dolphins rather than the tuna? Isn't that just arbitrarily and unfairly valuing fellow mammals as higher status?" I also think that the marine psychology scientist did a very poor job of actually answering this very legitimate question, so to clear things up, here's a better answer for everyone: Dolphins have higher "value" for preservation than tuna because in the given situation their safety contributes more to the development of sentient life in general. It is also easier to stop dolphin killing than tuna killing for various social & political reasons (namely their perceived closeness to us, like Neil said, and them being generally regarded as non-food animals, like Chuck said). All animals, plants, and even inanimate objects should be preserved as best as we can to the extent that they contribute to the furthering of sentience in the universe (based on a value of striving for intelligence and complexity, which is a trait inherent to the human condition and is part of how we've progressed so far in our survival and expansion). In other words, we should stop unnecessary killing of both dolphins and tuna. But, in this case we should prioritize saving the dolphins because they are smarter, more similar to us, less necessary to the activity we're fighting against (collateral damage, not food). In summary, there should be people fighting to save both the dolphins and the tuna. And both are right. But for various reasons, it's easier to make a big impact by prioritizing the dolphins first.
@ΘάνατοςΧορτοφάγος
Be vegan and you preserve both tuna and dolphins, easy

6:49 The EQ doesn't matter (brain size to body size) (mice have us beat there). What matters is neuron density (for mice it is 79K neurons per... I forgot the volume, but for humans, by comparison, it is 89,000K. The neurons of other mammals (such as cows, who have brains larger that humans) do not get denser with useful neurons, but only larger neurons while the quantity remains relatively low, and it is quantity that translated into cleverness and intelligence (which do not add up to enlightenment, but often add up to stupidity - read the Philosophy of Broader Survival for enlightenment). The important area for thinking is the frontal lobe. 7:26 she knows (kind of) because she said she means 'weight' (density) when she says size... the number of neurons in a brain (the density) is determined (counted) by dissolving the brain (meaning the cells), separating the nucleus's, and weighing the aggregate nucleus's. (and I used to get mad at my kids for being contrarians, not realizing that they took after me)...

I have a little mindfuck for you. Yes, dolphins are mammals, but you can still say they are fish. That's because our branch of the vertebrates has split from one of many that live in water. It means that "fish" is not a real clade in biology. Essentially it just means "vertebrate that lives in the water". Dolphins are that.

I’m glad they acknowledged how smart just our cats and dogs are. They surprise me everyday. We used to have a dog that was so smart that she knew what we were talking about, so we sprayed saying things by spelling them out, and she knew that too. So we started writing things down and she KNEW every time that it was about her. She would practically burst trying to talk as well and would get so frustrated if we didn’t interpret things right, but when we did, bingo! An extraordinary animal.

Ya it's me again... I also want to recall something I remember hearing a few years back... from somewhere... But as best as I can remember, they were researching dolphins at one time, basically a diver was in the water with the dolphins, but doing his best to be subtle and not alter the dolphins interactions while recording their clicks and whistles, then later he would go back down, lay on the ocean floor to be subtle, and play back the recording, and observe the dolphins reactions to the sounds. At one point in the playback, several dolphins suddenly stopped what they were doing, turned and looked at the diver, swam to him, and then carefully maneuvered themselves to lay on the ocean floor like him. This was such an interesting reaction that they snipped that soundclip that caused such a reaction, and the diver jumped back in, this time not taking the time to lay down, he was standing on the ocean floor. He played the soundclip, and the other dolphins came over and began to maneuver themselves until they were standing on their tails, on the ocean floor, as much like the diver as they could manage. As I said this is from memory from a few years ago but hopefully I got the basic facts correct, but it seemed to be a big breakthrough as it seemed that they had found the dolphin phrase for "hey can you do this?" or "copy me"

I'm in the same boat. Even when I went to school I wasn't really at school - I mean, on the premises sure but the actual learning and attending class part was amiss. I'm only 27 and still found myself saying "oh it's too late now." After getting some well needed perspective, I realized I have plenty of time to move into a career. Honestly, I'm glad I waited because I'm still not 100% sure about what I wanna be when I grow up - how you're supposed to know at 18 is beyond me. I recently did a refresher on highschool biology, chemistry, and physics so that I'd have better fundamentals moving into college and then possibly university. If you're feeling like its too late just know that it isn't, there's always the opportunity to learn something new. Sure, it's going to take a lot of effort, more so than when you're young, but it's definitely do-able. I had a gentleman in my class that I ended up gaining a ton of respect for. He was a paramedic for 34 years and decided to go back to school to become a civil engineer. It's never too late.

This is the best topic of the moment. I know that some species have elaborate and intelligent communications methods. We can benefit between our own species with better communication. That can extend to intelligent species we share the planet with. I think also we shouldn't underestimate the importance of non verbal communications that even we ourselves between humans may take for granted in understand what and how something is being communicated. We would need to take in all aspects of an animals communication methods to understand what they are saying and how in depth that communication might actually be. Obviously some species will be more capable than others. But yeah, I suspect that over time less of these species will end up on the dinner table due to these types of emerging technologies. Having said that, the smartest animals don't tend to be the tastiest. Funny that.

I'm 45 year old physics major and have been self teaching for decades. I have a theory on dark energy (why the acceleration rate initially increased when it did, and why it continues to do so) that I have not heard or read anywhere. My professor (I've had the same one for all my physics classes so far) can't disprove it but he's not really into astrophysics. He's more obsessed with wave/partical duality of light and quantum topics. My sister got her 1st degree is astrophysics before going becoming a surgeon. Her physics are rusty, but she can't find any fatal basic flaws in the idea either. Anyone know my best chance of getting this hypothesis in front of NDT? It only takes about 2 minutes to present the basics of the idea, but maybe a couple paragraphs to clearly communicate if typed out. I have considered doing the $6,000 patron that gets a 10 minute in person segment with Neil, but I'm by no means rich...but it's a serious consideration for me if it means finally getting a legit review of the hypothesis. Even if I spend the next 10 years paying off that credit card. I would do the $5 patron, but I don't know how many people do this and what the odds are of my question getting selected. I support him financially through book purchases, watching YT ads, and if he ever tours my way I'll jump on a ticket. I don't have a problem with that, but money is tight (for most people right now) so I'm just trying to find the best way to approach him. I had to stop college due to no lab classes being offered right now, so I don't really have access to any professors. There are no tours or events to attend. I've thought about just sitting outside LIGO with a sign asking for a physicist to stop and talk, but it's 400 miles away and I need to work 6 days a week. In short, how do I get NDT's attention for 5 minutes? I would like SOME credit for the idea of there is something there, so I don't want to send it through a channel that would allow someone else to claim it for their own before Neil got it and knew it was from me.

Just another display of how he is actively working to educate us, by asking the experts the questions we would ask 😀
