Hello and welcome back to Popcorn Chat, my name is Sarah and I love to talk about films!
This week's video is another new section I want to be doing more regularly on my channel, where I compare a book with its film adaptation and ultimately decide which one is better.
I recently completed 'Starter for 10' and I'd seen the film multiple times I thought this would be a great one to start with whilst it's fresh in my mind.
Let me know if you have any suggestions of other book to film adaptations you would like to see on this channel in the comments!

Very nice comparison. I've not seen the film, but I do really enjoy James McCavoy, so I might have to check this out.

Really liked this video. Obviously everyone has different takes on film adaptations of books and I, myself, am starting to draw my own conclusions. Through experience and talking from personal opinion, you have to see the two mediums as separate entities. Bit like doing the reverse: reading the book of the film (Star Wars comes to mind). A director and screenwriter have to make decisions and some of those are based on the audience for the film would be a lot different. You have people who read the book but then you have ones that haven’t. A crash and an illness are two very different things aren’t they? But I’m sure there’s a reason why the filmmakers went with that decision. I haven’t read the book myself. Things that happen in books are not as easily translatable as people might think. Budgets are always a big reason (in fact a crash could have been expensive but then they could have done it off camera couldn’t they?) I am currently reading Red Dragon by Thomas Harris which has been adapted twice. I have seen the Brett Ratner version with Edward Norton and Anthony Hopkins but not Manhunter directed by Michael Mann. I intend to do so after I finished the book. Three other things I want to comment on: I read Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorpe which was adapted into Die Hard and I actually preferred the film. My suggestion is: is there a film you prefer to the book? I watched your Harry Potter video and that got me thinking. I think I like the book and the film equally but for different reasons. You summed up why I liked the film in your video well. With the book, it felt personal to me and the length was just right. Lastly, The Girl on the train. I bought and read the book shortly before the film released and I sort of regretted doing that because it was so fresh in my mind, the film felt by the numbers. I preferred the book but neither did anything especially for me. I was going to offer constructive criticism but I really did like your video and thought ‘no, you do you’. Love your presenting style and I know it will only get better, so if it’s good now, imagine what it’ll be later on?

Thanks for the comment! Yes there are times definitely when you have to step back and think, other people watching this are having a different experience to me, whether they've read the book prior to the film or maybe they're just enjoying the film on its own and that's okay! I just thought it would be interesting as its an author I've recently found that I love and I had seen the film various times. I've seen Girl on the Train but not read the book but I have seen a stage adaptation which wasn't as good as the film! I didn't know Die Hard was a book before tbh! I think have Red Dragon but yet to read it. Thank you for you kind words! Practice is key so hopefully this channel can only go up!

Hi Sarah. Have you reviewed any of Stephen King's book-to-film adaptations? If not, I would really love to see you do some of them. As you will most probably know, nearly EVERYTHING he writes is made into a movie or TV series. The latest, I believe, is the story from his novella book LET IT BLEED, and that is MR HARRIGAN'S PHONE.
