My one dollar Boxwood (Buxus) trees are beginning the long journey of becoming a bonsai forest. To see a previous video on my Boxwood trees, click here.... • Pruning My Pre Bonsai ... #TheBonsaiZone
Even though my birthday is the 19th I considered this a birthday gift from you Nigel. I've wondered for awhile how exactly you'd work with a boxwood. I know I just started bonsai this year but I think boxwoods can make gorgeous bonsai. They have amazing foliage and give alot of options for choices. Only down side to boxwoods is they harden up really quick and make it impossible to use any wire. You got one chance to wire a boxwood, when it's green lol anyways thanks Nigel! Can't wait to see how these turn out!
I picked up a boxwood last summer. It took me awhile to go through them all at the Home Depot, but I eventually found a single trunk with nice branches. They have a bark that makes them look old.
Maybe move your camera to the side/ or above slightly cause its focusing on your hand and the actual plant work gets blurry. im sure that would make the footage more professional.
Oh no, I got distracted and I’ve missed the premiere! Let’s focus on the tree and have a lovely weekend everybody! (For those in the UK, please watch out for the storm!)
Thanks for this video I don’t know if you saw my comment in the lemon tree video about making a video on a boxwood tree but if you didn’t thanks anyway. Now I now what to do with the one I just got 🙏🏼✌🏼
WOW! What a fantastic deal you got on that boxwood. So nice that you are able to work on some trees during the inclement weather there. Great work on that boxwood. They make great shohin bonsai. Thanks for sharing your video.
I have quite a few boxwood 'under development'. I was able to purchase 3ft hedges for just £5 at my local nursery. I trunk chopped them but really underestimated how long they would take to re-grow. They are definitely a labour of love...
Holy Moly, you never stop, not into the freezing rain Mr. Saunders? A good class in: a/how to be a hardy Canadian b/ your detail pruning on the turning Boxwood shrub into a Bonsai. Thank you.
Are you doing root and top work at once because boxwoods always bounce back better because if you space out root/top work it bounces back slower? I read that somewhere. I killed all my boxwoods. I just bought a beautiful one today so I’m rewatching boxwood videos to see if I can catch what I went wrong with before working on this guy I got today.
I don't know if you have rooted boxwood cuttings before but in my experience they can take over a year to root, specially larger cuttings. Just a heads up, don't give up on them, as long as they are still green. :)
Found some 3gal boxwood marked down to $3 at the end of last summer. All single trunk and 2-3 inch diameter. I'm excited to start on them, but worried about die back when I cut the larger branches.
Thanks, I had just picked up a Boxwood from Lowes. I am hoping you can detail your soil mixture for me. I am used to using regular potting soil for flowers, but bonsai has a completely different mixture. If not a secret, can you tell me the mixture. I have plants ready to move from the ground to bonsai pots. Thanks.
Nice video as always Nigel. I’m wondering if you could give me some advice if you should happen to se my comment at all. I’d be very grateful for your advice 😊 So basically I live in the UK and for the past 5 years or so I’ve been trying to grow orange trees from seeds ever since I saw your video and was ultimately impressed by it. The problem I have is that I can never manage to get them past the seedling stage for some reason and I don’t know what it is that I’m doing wrong. I’ve tried everything from changing the soil type and adding things such as coarse sand and perlite to changing how much water I give them and using grow lights as well as natural light, all to no avail. I know that it’s very hard to grow them from seeds especially in the UK due to the nature of our climate and it would just be easier to probably buy one, but I I want to be able to get the growing technique right to be able to grow them and citrus in general and have that satisfaction of getting them from the seedling stage to a well established and healthy bonsai, so in 5/10/20 years I can look back at a well established citrus bonsai and say to people “This is what I’ve managed to achieve because of the inspiration that Nigel’s videos have given me, which is persistence to get where I want from something I’ve grown”. Any help and advice at that you can give on growing them from seed would be extremely appreciated ☺️
Can you do a video on bonsai soils Nigel, and the benefits between the types. I've never repotted bonsai before but I've bought a lot of the more traditional bonsai soil (like compost) but now I'm wondering if you're mixture would be better?
Hi Shaun, Nigel already has a video in his back catalogue all about soil. I just checked and it is called "Bonsai Soil, April 2015" (if you sort his videos by "date added~oldest" and scroll down a bit, the thumbnail is Nigel stood by a gravel mountain!!!)
Hi Nigel, Boxwood is great for small woodland designs because of its small leaves and slow growth. Hopefully your trees will be spared from the box tree moth. Much luck. 👍
Nice job Nigel :) have you experimented with Boxwood before? I am actually thinking of getting one myself. Although you do see them as Bonsai I feel like they don't get enough recognition. They are usually very available and make for great trees :)
Hey Nigel I know u said b4 but I cannot remember where you got that soil scoop? If u see the message and know let me know please .. thank you ans Bonsai on🤙🙏
I can't believe it was just 1 dollar. Thanks for sharing a nice video. Are you going to water them everyday even though there are cuttings without roots? Also, are you place them in the shadow or full sun?
It’s not officially a root rake. He found it in a second hand store.. probably a miniature garden rake. Scott Winnard has something similar that’s part of a miniature plant/garden set, I’ve seen the small brass garden sets on sale on Etsy.. in Germany. I’m just too cheap to order from Germany. 🤣
I have five different verity of boxwood shrubs my largest is fourteen feet tall and wide Most popular are the American pyramid because it grows in a Christmas tree form
You can tell where the root plane starts because below that there will be no more trunk, they will be roots coming out at all angles. The high roots will be by themselves and there will be a large amount of trunk beneath them.
I'm planning on starting a rainbow ucaliptis as soon as the seeds sprout, have you ever seen anything like that or have you worked with a rainbow tree before.
Please show the result after the work at a bonsai in the same video. I almost never see this in a bonsai video, maybe because the result is so mutch after.
Aussie Dave here Nigel, your boxwood looks the same as my "English Box " mine is styled in a bonsai pot. Mine is very slow growing. In 5 years it's only grown about 12mm. Branches and roots are healthy 😉.
English has the smaller leaf American has a larger pointed leaf about 3/4 inch in length vs 7/16 on English boxwood’s then there the Japanese and korean that have the larger oval leaf’s
If temperatures go again below zero (I think it’s a matter of when rather than if) the water will freeze and might break the water reservoir. Better safe than sorry!
