Starting a fire in damp conditions is no easy task! But with the right natural materials, some patience (and a dose of luck haha), it can certainly be done. Plus it’s really rewarding too! This was the first time I've tried starting a fire this way with damp materials, so I was really chuffed when it took :D There were 2 attempts prior to this one where the fire died shortly after I'd transferred it to the Bushbox, it's a reallllly fine line between feeding it and smothering it especially when things are a bit damp. This is a 5 minute video but in reality it took me over 2 hours to get that cup of coffee.. if at first you don't succeed and all that!
Thank you so much for watching 😊 Claire 🌿🐻

Enjoyed this video, for as long as I can remember I’ve been intrigued with the idea of making a fire with a spark, I just always used matches. Just last Christmas I got a steel and rod as a gift and finally made a fire with sparks! By the way I’m 78 yrs. old.! 👍👍🤗🎩

It is best to collect the birch bark when you get home. Then you put the birch bark in a blender to make chips with the birch. When it's done you put everything in a plastic bag: it's ready to be used with the firesteel (no need to scrape it with the knife it catches fire very easily and you can make many fires with it it's light and it takes up very little space in the bag). 👍👍👍

I am going to go thru all your videos. This one is great. It wasn't that you had a magic formula unknown to anyone, but you showed anyone what to collect and how to do it. Your showing the different items in order of how you put then in the fire. Very easy to do if they follow directions. I love the way you say "proper excited", reminds me of calling my UK offices 4 times a day in the 1980's

Very good technique, especially the "grounded" steel. Other bushcraft channels have tested different techniques, e.g. holding the steel up in the air, but direct contact with the kindling was the best. Nicely organised material for the stages, too.

Nice work, Claire! When I was in the scouts, my nickname was "Fire Hazard" due to my fascination with anything flammable, and my propensity for lighting fires. One time, at scout camp, we were split into small groups and set the task of building a bivouac, lighting a fire and making a cup of coffee, in advance of a hypothetical storm due in two hours. We all managed to build our bivouacs, but to a man, failed at lighting a fire. The scoutmaster had to give a lesson on firelighting, with a real-life demonstration. Endowed with this new knowledge, I tried again, and still failed!

When prepping your Bush box put some combustible stuff in first before you light the embers on the birch bark, it makes it easier to get a good flame started you can then add the twigs .....hope this helps ...Phil

Good job on getting it started with everything damp. A couple of suggestions, if you are picking damp grass or leaves try wrapping them up in a bandanna or hanky and put them in your trouser pocket, your heat will dry them out as you walk (needless to say you should do that early on in your trip, no point doing it if you are attempting to start the fire straight away). And with your ferro rod you could try keeping the knife still just above the tinder and drawing the rod back, instead of striking down with the knife, it helps to stop the tinder getting knocked about. Some people don't like that technique but I prefer it.
@WildBeare

That's such a great idea to wrap it all up in a pocket :D I've never tried it that way, will give it a go :)

@@WildBeare I can't take credit for the idea, I saw it somewhere else, possibly Far North Bushcraft's channel, but it does work. Give it a try and see how you get on anyway. I dare say things down there will be a tad drier than up here in Scotland anyway, so you probably have a head start already!

Out of the countless RU-vid camping and Bushcraft channels I've seen you are the only other person that I've seen who actually takes advantage of leaves which I do all the time, as a fire starting methods of course I don't use any special tree if they're dry leaves on the ground and you have to make an effort to move them out of the way so they don't catch a Light then of course they are flammable so utilize them! I also never tried to actually light a fire with damp materials or in the rain until after watching years ago Carlisle 195 and seeing the fact that most places in England and especially up north it's damp most of the time so I guess it's a prerequisite if you're going to be camping in England to learn how to light fires in damp conditions.As an American your voice sounds like a professional nature presenter a female David Attenborough! With your British accent and yeah I know there multiple British accents, but you sound I think you Brits say posh! Namaste!

Here’s a hint that you have probably. already figured out? When setting your cup or cook pot onto a fire, have your handles on the upwind side of the fire. They stay cooler, with less chance of leaving patches of skin deposits on a searing hot handle. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying.

That was gratifying. Tips: Put your tinder on a small piece of bark if you're not going to light it in place (in the fire pit) so that when you move it, you'll have something to hold on to like a serving dish. Keep the handles of your cup facing the wind so the flame doesn't heat them up and you won't be touching hot handles. Hold the knife stationary over the tinder and draw the ferro rod back against it showering sparks in front of it. This way, you won't have to come in contact with the tinder. Don't be stingy with your tinder. The more you use, the faster it will ignite and the safer it will before you as well. The less you use your knife as a scraper, the less chance you'll have of getting hurt. Here, check this out; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jYFEAjOngZA.html By the way, I LOVED your sense of accomplishment. Building a fire is not easy. You did well.
