Starting a NEW Realistic City in Cities Skylines

Today we will be starting a new realistic city in Cities Skylines named Cascadia Bay. The Cascadia Bay region is set in the US Pacific Northwest along the border of Oregon and Washington. In this video we will work on the starting layout, build a beautiful suspension bridge and create an iconic downtown skyline to define the region. The city uses many mods and custom assets from all over the world.
This new city is based on the region surrounding Astoria, Oregon. In real life Astoria is a small town but in this series, the city of Astoria will be a densely packed city with a bustling region surrounding it. The goal for the build is to create an area that resembles a mix of Seattle and San Francisco also taking inspiration from Portland and New York City.
I hope you'll join me as we create a unique region in Cities Skylines.

Astoria didnt become a big city like Seattle, San Francisco or even Portland for three very big reasons. 1: The terrain to get inland from the coast would have been forbidding back then. The roads were mere trails. 2: It was much quicker and more efficient to travel down the Columbia to what became Portland. Which had much easier terrain to travel inland with. 3: Which made it very easy to tap into the extensive timber and fur trading markets because they had more easily traveled inland roads. If Astoria could have competed economically at that time with the Willamette Valley they would have become Portland. They could not. Not even close. Beautiful city and area though. And love your videos Cities by Diana.

That's kinda what I suspected but wasn't sure so I'm super glad someone had the answer 🥰 regardless it's fun to build such a large alternative reality city on such a hilly map.

@@CitiesByDiana To add on to this, Portland is particularly valuable for shipping because it is an easily navigable freshwater port. The fresh water kills the barnacles on ship, causing them to fall off. This makes ships faster and decreases wear on the hull - all without the huge cost of scraping it off in a dry dock. The brackish water of the Astoria estuary does not provide this advantage. I enjoyed the video and look forward to the rest of the series!

Wow! Looks more "San Franciscoy" than anything else. When I lived in Portland for 2017, I drove buses for a tour bus company. They had the contract for the Amtrak/Greyhound route to Astoria. There's a cruise ship dock just to the west of the bridge, and they had a small trolley that operated on the old rail line with a generator car to provide electric power. We stayed at a hotel just east of the bridge. Oh, and one more thing, if doing Astoria, you can't forget the Goonies house!

Yeah I think for the other side of the bridge after I taper down the density a bit I'm gonna TRY to one-to-one the actual downtown Astoria and make it sort of an "old town" for the city. I have the start of the actual street grid placed and I've got some stuff I'm working on for episode 2 that's a bit more Seattle-esque. But put a large city on a hilly peninsula with a suspension bridge and you've pretty much always got something resembling San Francisco 😂😂 and that's pretty much why I was like "ok fine let's run with it"

I found your channel through one of City Planner Plays' streams, and decided to have a look. I _usually_ prefer watching zoned areas grow rather than watching someone place a lot of buildings by hand, since I like the interaction between the builder and the game mechanics. That is by no means an absolute preference, and you seem fun to watch, so I expect I'll hang around.

For a narrow interchange, it is hard to beat an inverted SPUI. This is where the on/off ramps split and merge from the highway on the left, from between the highway directions.

Not necessarily, much of what I use is just custom buildings from the Steam Workshop, I do have the DLCs but you definitely don't need them all to make something real close to this ☺️

I have no idea, I run this on a laptop but I use windows. I think if you've got enough RAM you absolutely can. I'd say 16-32gb minimum. I used to run ALMOST this level of game on an old Thinkpad with 8gb of ram but it ran slower at higher populations.

I play on console and although I'll never get any degree of "realism" I always try to get the general layout of cities correct. Is there anything in particular to consider in the the placements of off-ramps from the highways?

Yes! Consider the context of the area they're in. If it's a super dense area it's likely the offramps will be built around existing structures rather than just on empty land. And in general development tends to go right up to the edge of highways in a lot of cities as the city was there before the highway.
