It’s always The best practice to be transparent and open and honest with all of our customers. I’m gonna have to agree with that for sure it’s just no better way to be.

Yup. Sadly, not everyone shares the same sentiment. Have an excellent evening.

Very valuable information. I'm from Australia and grow my own tea and coffee and promised myself that 2024 would be market time, as I'm ready to venture into selling. As Australia is so greedy now I'm sure this practice will be happening here. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and perspective on this shocking practice.

It’s risky for me to post but it’s important enough to do so. Glad it’s helpful and best to you on your business!

I don't disagree that blend ownership should be a more accessible option, but I think you are overstating the value. 50% apple doesn't = 50% apple. Are they from the US, Turkey or eastern Europe? What's the acidity profile? And flavorings are the most complex piece. A mango flavor from vendor X will taste very different from vendor Y. I think reverse engineering is a super important skill for any blender to have. In my experience, many large tea companies care more about a supplier maintaining blend consistency than they do the formula, which will fluctuate due to differences in raw materials anyways. If, as a co-packer, you offer your clients ownership of the recipe, it is a nice perk.

I agree with all of those things. Blending is an art with many facets. I could do a whole entire video series on that. It’s the holding hostage of a client’s formula that I find extremely disagreeable. As an entrepreneur, it indicates insecurity in a company that would do that. As far as reverse engineering, I find that distasteful as well, at least when it comes in the form of a client asking me to copy a competitor’s blend for them (vs trying to reclaim their own). On that side of the coin, it indicates to me a lack of creativity and ownership of the brand.

I disagree that it demonstrates insecurity for a supplier to withhold formulas. In my experience, it is not useful in recreation unless you have the specifics for ingredients and flavorings used (near impossible to get). I am referring to reverse engineering to reclaim their own blend, not a copycat of another brand's formula. To give an example, I was working with a supplier to reverse engineer a passionfruit blend and we just couldn't get it to match until we tried adding some mango flavoring (not part of the original formula). A talented blender is more valuable than a formula in my opinion.

@@sirwilliamoftheleaf This was nearer my understanding of it - the recipe is actually variable to maintain a profile so there is no client formula (how would this be different to 'recipe' that can be exactly taken away & followed when the next batches of assam A, B, C D Kenyan ABC Ceylon A & B arrive with different characteristics unless I am missing totally something here? I have a bias against flavouring so won't touch that one but why is one even using an external blender or flavourist at all? I can easily mix teas till I like the results no problem - can I get that result with different teas? No. I need a blender and they are probably worth the cost since their skills presumably recreate the blend from the most ecomonical base ingredients. Unless I know car mechanics or plumbing I need to pay a car mechanic or plumber - they aren't holding out on me

@@robinphillips655 I agree with you and there are many reasons why outsourcing to a blender is worth it for most tea brands - and I think the creator of the video agrees too. I just think formula ownership isn't a make-or-break point when scouting for a blending partner. The main thing to look for is consistency.
