***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Great video. Tips were great today. We are laying ground cover this weekend for our high tunnel area and our in ground garden. The tip about laying the fabric with wind direction is something that I never would have thought about. And putting staples in sparsely on the bottom cover that will have the overlap makes great sense. I'm so excited for this yr . Not contending with the weeds, grasses, and having the drip tape will definitely be a game changer. It's almost cheating😂 Peace and Love Neighbors ❤️

12 foot folded means it's folded in half, making it 6 feet wide and then rolled up to ship, just like the six foot one you ordered. When you get it, roll it out and unfold it. The row is now 12 ft. I had the same question until I ordered it and rolled it out.

This is an efficient way to garden. I’ve used my same cover for the past 5 years. To offset the ground cover heating the soil during our summers I add a layer of cardboard under the cover. I add 2 to 3 layers of cardboard under the walkways. This holds in the moisture, keeps the soil temperature more stable and stops weeds from popping through unused holes. When it is time to plant, wet the cardboard and poke through. At the end of the season I pull up the cover leaving the cardboard. Then I hit it repeatedly with our mower to shred for compost. Be sure to use clean, undyed, tape and staple free cardboard.

Great video. One statement I disagree with is no need to plant next to an emitter. That may be just fine with a clay soil or a good loam. However, I live in Florida and garden in a coarse sand. I find it necessary to use no more than 8 inch emitter spacing and preferably 6 inch for crops planted close together, such as beans. For larger plants, such as broccoli or tomatoes, I find it helps to plant close to an emitter, as there is very little lateral spread of moisture from the emitter -- it just goes straight down into my sand.

I got the 12ft wide folded. It’s just folded to be 6’ and on a roll. You just unroll it and unfold it. Not hard. The hardest part was trying to put it in place with wind. It’s constantly windy here in SE Oklahoma. Think I’m going to get 8” staples for the future too. The staples (6”) where the fabric overlaps keep coming up.

The staples where the fabric overlaps keep coming up on me (windy Oklahoma here) but on the edges it's staying. Do you have any suggestions? I ysed 6" staples, I'm considering 8" staples or using rocks... i'd prefer not to use rocks. Lol.

I have just laid 6: 6' x 50' and will do 9 rows with drip tape. Using timer to water before I get up (LOL). So this video was perfect! QUESTION: Once the different size/spacing holes are burned, aren't you planting the same stuff in the same place year after year (no crop rotation)? And how do you replace nutrients the plants use every year? No more compost addition? Or do you remove the weed barrier every year and store over the winter (Michigan winter here) so you can amend the soil? So I am asking about crop rotation and soil amendment under ground cover and irrigation system. Any advice is greatly appreciated, Doug

I was assigned a lot from my community garden center about three weeks ago. I checked it out the lot looked great, added some compost and additional soil. Planted about a week later, within the next week to two omg weeds galore. I was out weeding today and let me tell you it was so frustrating. My plants are just starting to take hold so pulling the weeds could harm the plants I’ve been growing all winter indoors. I was out there with a pair of scissors I’m sure looking ridiculous. The plan was to give my plants some time to get a little stronger. lol so that landed me here. After my summer crops are done if they win the weed battle this is what I’ll be doing. The weed is called nutsedge. They look like blades of grass so if you pull it and don’t get the nut at the roots they spread more, some of them don’t have nuts and they just spread like vines underground. How fun!! 😂 But I got a plan for them now. Video was great. 👍🏽

If you plan ahead a good rule is to put a silage tarp down 3 to 6 months before you put the weed fabric down. Put the tarp down and let it stay there for 1 month. Roll or fold it up and let the weeds and grass sprout then put it out again over the garden plot. Do this 3 to 6 times. Every time you do this you reduce the weed seed bank by 1/2. This will keep weeds from coming up through the holes in the weed fabric from where you plant and where you put the stables down.
