After gardening together for 8 years, this year we started all over in new gardens... from scratch, by ourselves. We faced challenges and made mistakes. This is a real look at how it went.

LOL. At 4:56 ! You had me in tears. You ARE so blessed to have each other as support to keep the plod on! of AND the man power is a gift from God. I'm in the resolved to spinsterhood phase in my life and yes, the extra loving and willing upper body strength plus push would be wonderful.... God gives when needed. He's my rock. BTW Note taking IS super hard. Not too much willpower exists after grueling work in the garden or land prep. I get it too about recreating the infrastructure needed. Perennials are the bomb! This was very timely to have confirmations in regard to all the points you brought up. Especially if we plan to relocate. Great work and update girsl. TY xo

This video was so encouraging! I am a VERY NEW gardener..literally started 3 months ago after living 7 years in my home. It's nice to hear that even professional gardeners struggle with so many things. Mulch, irrigation, timing, clay soil etc...I am "trying" to garden in 10b and it is VERY difficult!! Thank you for this video and the encouragement.

You can do it! Experience helps, but it sure doesn’t save us from rookie mistakes and gardening challenges. Lol I’m also getting used to a new zone too, and very sandy soil instead of clay.

I have been scrambling to figure this all out. I don’t have the money to take any of the flower farmers online courses I’ve wanted to take. I’ve been researching, reading, watching videos of several of you that grow beautiful flowers and have been successful. I’ve decided to start exactly where I am from scratch. I have over last few years acquired a greenhouse, wheelbarrow, shovels, multiple tools. I have grown our own vegetables for years so I had some things. I grew flowers and sold them years ago and gained a large customer base. Several things happened and I didn’t grow or sell for several years. Since I have decided to start flower farming and start my own business I feel overwhelmed, not sure where to start. I started buying tubers, seed , bulbs last year. I want to plant so much but don’t have the funds to do as much as I want so I’m unsure of which 10-15 varieties to grow to create a nice bouquet. I do plan to plant dahlias, sunflowers zinnias but unsure of fillers. I’m not going into debt by taking out loan so I’m working to help fund my supplies to order flowers seed, tubers etc. what fillers are versatile that would be great with different color pallets to start with? How long did you wait until you established a business name tax ID and the legal start up of your business? I didn’t know whether to do trial run for while or to establish that first. Any advice I’m all ears! Thank you for being so helpful honest and realistic!! I have no one to go to for any help with this. My friends don’t have green thumbs they come to me for gardening tips or vegetables. So I research you, other flower farmers for guidance. ❤Thanks from Kentucky

Watched this on my screen porch this morning and now you don’t seem so far away🥲 Thank you for keeping on with the videos! (Love the “heading out to new pasture feeling”😍) It’s exactly what I need to give me a boost from behind to get out there & tackle projects I kinda dread. This Summer I have struggled more than ever to get things done in my garden / landscape. We were gone every weekend in June and that is not a good idea. I have areas that aren’t even mulched yet & are a mass of weeds. I trimmed my New Dawn rose too early & half of it died so it barely bloomed. I still haven’t cut it back cuz I dread it, the canes are huge. Some of my boxwood up & died after 10 yrs. All my mini supertunias have aphids. My garden phlox are struggling with some kind of root rot I research and can’t find an exact answer to. Every yr it gets worse I think. I’m so discouraged about that cuz they’re my fav’s. So, you are not alone in the discouragement.😊 I have a whole day at home tho so I’m gonna tackle some things, and use my zucchini for supper. Hang in there! Your gardens will be better the second time around!! Love you gals!

Thanks for this….I am at a new property and have been feeling so discouraged and overwhelmed. I have a vision for my new gardens and I know I can do it, because I’ve done it before…..but it is SO much work!! I am thrilled with my new property because it is mine and it is my permanent place….no more creating gardens that I have to leave. But I do feel a bit of grief for my last garden….this video really touched me….I don’t feel so alone in my new gardening journey going forward. And I have told myself “Next year will be better” almost every single day! 😂

Thank you for doing this video. I left behind my urban garden of 20 years to move to 7 acres of unlandscaped beauty. Starting over has been so very hard and so very mentally challenging. I totally understood “looking out the window at dirt”. 😢 I wondered if warmer weather and flowers would ever come around. We have had many challenges in our soil and a new adventures in the insect world. I’m hoping next year will be better. ❤

What a timely topic! The note taking is exactly what I (haven't been good at) and was thinking about earlier today! I garden in the northwoods and just harvested the first snaps today. Of course, as soon as I'm able to cut these first blooms, I forget when I got the soil blocked seedlings planted outdoors (which should help me plan next winter?) Sigh - . Maybe if I keep basic garden details jotted down on a calendar I would actually do it?🤣

(Just got back from a vacation where we were together 🥰) I’ve wondered how you were doing, not living close together anymore and adjusting to a new life of being married and starting new gardens. Thank you for your vulnerability and the helpful video. ❤

Laughing because, although I went to school and worked in the design, each new house held challenges and even by the 8th house, I still ran into new issues. I found that gardening was the same way...8th garden, but first "I can do anything" garden.

Starting a new garden is hard. We moved in November, and this is my first year here in S.C. I had to buy compost and to amend the clay soil just to get started. Now my echinacea are blooming so I do have some flowers for cutting, but by mistake I planted short zinnias. Win some, lose some, keep going.
@rootdesigncompany

Yes, we both had to do a lot to the soil to be able to plant into it. And we planted short zinnias one year too! 😅

As stupid as it sounds, what garden cloths do you use? Do they let weed come through because what i have weeds are just growing through. Thanks for your videos. Very encouraging ❤

I want you both to know how much your words mean to me. Last year was only my 2nd year in my vegetable garden. I had challenges, but overall I produced a lot of good food with enough to share with neighbors. It seemed like I might be like my mom, who seemed to walk by a plant and it would grow. Then 2023 rolled around, and a lot happened. I lost a family member and fell into deep mourning and grief. This was followed by not one but two surgeries. So I decided not to garden this year at all. I covered my raised beds with hardware cloth to discourage mother rabbits from building their nests there, which one had done previously and walked away. The surgeries went well, and I started to feel better bit by bit. The Lord was healing. So, I dared to think about starting a fall garden. But something was still holding me back. Now I know what that something is. It is largely fear - fear that I won't be able to do it physically (which I may not yet); fear that I won't be able to locate the things I need (they're in the garage for goodness sake); and fear that I won't be as successful as I was last year, because I really don't have Mama's gift. Listening to you, I am asking myself, "How will I know if I'm afraid of trying?" Hearing you honestly and openly share your challenges - though different from mine - and hearing how you overcame and/or are overcoming those challenges with such peace and grace is encouraging me to try again. It might not be a fall garden, but looking forward to next spring will give me enough time to plan as you talked about. And it also helps to know I am not alone when it comes to having challenges. Thank you.

I’m so sorry to hear about the difficulty you’ve faced. Give yourself grace, too. We’ve had to release ourselves from our own unrealistic expectations and take it a little slower. May you have courage to start again. And like we tell ourselves, there’s always next year. :)

@@phaedragardeness Thank you. I am one of your subscribers as well. I guess these challenges ultimately turn around and teach us what we are here to learn. So in that way, perhaps they are blessings disguised as challenges. And, yes, flowers do cheer us up! Your idea is a good one.
