Something to keep in mind with the solids filter: the MAJORITY of ammonia excreted from the fish actually comes from their gills. Rob is absolutely right, the nutrients suspended in the water will be more than enough. The risks of going anaerobic outweigh the loss of extra nutrients located in solid fish waste.

Rob, I've got some "big picture" questions about aquaponics, and I hope you don't mind addressing them. 1. It seems to me that all of your fish are going to become mature at the same time. What do people usually do? Harvest them all and clean and freeze the ones they don't need immediately, or is it possible to harvest them on demand after they reach mature size? 2. How do you handle changes created by harvesting your veggies or fish?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 2 года назад
Great questions JD. 1. I like to harvest when they hit about 500g/1lb & take a few at a time generally, that way there's always some nutrients in the system. 2. I have also done a batch harvest & the nutrient bank in the water & beds will carry the plants for quite a while if the fish load was high enough. If not, you can feed the system with a basic fish emulsion until you get more in. Hope that helps & let me know if you need further clarification. Cheers & have a top one.

Hi Rob, Been watching you on and off over the years, now with lockdown - it’s gotten me interested in setting up my first system. Have you ever covered the “input” side of things, such as how much water, food, electricity + cost of fingerlings? There’s obviously the initial cost of setting the system up - but if I’m going to convince my wife, I need facts and figures :) Anyway, cheers mate for all your videos - and your passion!
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 года назад
Hi Clarke. I did work it out years ago for the old system but can't find it in my "One Note" system sorry mate. Here's a quick calculation for silver perch to give you an idea on feed prices. The FRC (Feed Conversion Rate) silver perch 1.2-1.5 : 1 so that means for every 1.2-1.5 units of feed given to them they will put on 1 unit of weight. Their feed is $4 a kg/2lb when bought in bulk so with a commercial harvest FCR of 1.5:1 for a 500g/1lb fish you would be looking at 750g/1½lb of feed worth $3. Most backyarders aren't that on the ball when it comes to working out correct feeding rates so let's say we have a FRC of 2:1. That means it would cost us around $4 in feed to get a 50g/1.75oz fingerling up to 500g/1lb harvest size. Power is fairly easy to work out. Multiply the watts of your pumps by 24 (hours) then by 365 (days) to get total amount of power used. eg. 60w water pump & 20w air pump would use 80w all up. (80x24)x365 = 700,800 or 700.8kWH. Next look at your power bill to see what they charge per kW & you should have a ballpark power bill figure for running the system. Lets use $0.25 per kWH on the figure from above. $0.25 X 700.8kWH = $175.20 to run 24/7 for a year. Then you just need to divide that by the number of fish to get a per fish price. Don't forget to subtract the value of the veg that you think you have harvested from the system. 😉 That tends to bring the running cost right down on a well run system. Hope that helps you out some mate. Cheers.

Thanks Rob yet another informative clip! Are you going to use the bio reactor again or is that just for larger systems? I'm considering making several towers to maximize production and using one of your bio reactors in place of media. I've just gotta work out how to make the towers without buying the pre- made ones, as I have a very limited budget. Feel free to use the idea if you haven't already considered it. I think it could be a great solution for limited space gardens, the more minds at work the better I recon. The only real issue I see is the head height, may need a few pumps?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 года назад
Hey Dan. Many commercial farms run with just deep water culture or nutrient film channels & have a biofilter to process the waste. Mind you, they're a bit larger & more complex than my builds.😉 Head height shouldn't be an issue as long as you buy the right one. Cheers mate & have fun with the build.👍👍

Thanks for the awesome video :D Once I work out how to over winter my hydo system (strawbs + lettuce) I'm definitely keen to have a crack at doing aquaponics. With water volume I'm assuming you go for hundreds to thousands of litres of water not only for the fish but to also so it's more forgiving when you need to tweak the chemistry?

Once I was on a fish farm that had a river close to it and it had a big fall so they installed a wheel to produce power and avoid any power fail, also had a big energy generator that used gas to generate energy and if those 2 things failed they always had some tiny generators to plug one on each pump so the fail probability was really low They never had a fish drown in 20 years

Hey Rob thanks so much for this. We’re the ones with the super small system over my sons 10 gallon guppie tank. We’re totaling 6 guppies (2 male, 4 female) a snail and a couple frogs. We’re about to put the seedlings in the window box grow bed after letting them grow in plugs for a few weeks. We keep testing the water ammonia and nitrites/nitrates, ph etc and all is good. What do you recommend (if anything) we put in the clay pebble grow bed with the seedlings before turning on the water pump to start the system? Sea weed fertilizer powder from this video?

Hi Rob, I've got some tips for you if you don't mind! Add some californian earthworms into your grow bed! They are gonna help to clean the top part of your substrate that is not submerged! Add a few extra barrels to the system to help with filtration! You can place shards of roof tiles made from adode (clay) or some gravel! Above it, you could place some floating aquatic plants to take care of ammonia! Nice work BTW!

Hi Aly & Kimber. Sorry it took a while to get back to you. The most economic to use would be the IBC totes if you're only after a small system I think. Your channel is fantastic and so interactive. I've always been extremely interested in starting my own aquaponics set up in the lower mainland of BC, Canada- doesn't usually get the extreme colds people tend to picture for the rest of the country. Anyways, I've got a bit of a stretch but something you should really look into. I at least would love to your thoughts. So here's the pitch: All folks believe whether your an evolutionist or Bible believing creationist that the earth grew bigger plants, animals, and the like at incredible speeds to incredible sizes. Especially to feed the giant dinosaurs or mastodons as examples who would hilariously out-eat an elephant daily. So how'd they survive? Amber with bubbles from those times have given us some pretty good information. The trick appears to have been or one of them anyways, was a denser atmosphere/richer air(both oxygen for creatures and carbon/nitrogen for plants. It would take something like the order of 2x our current density. It sounds science fictiony, but trust me- the results are insane from where it has been demonstrated and in Canada, an inclosed system may already be necessary especially anywhere north or east of where I am if I were to run it all year. My thinking is, if I have to enclose, why not pressurize the entire greenhouse/setup/enclosure? If current air pressure is considered generally 12-17 psi then I think all you have to do is churn it up a little bit in terms of a compressor- the only issue I see being you'd have pressurize a very large space means it may still require a large compressor. I don't know the math on this and while I haven't researched this part extensively, usually I get strange results from googling kind of obscure or unexplored in the mainstream ideas anyways. I've heard of people running pressurized aquarium tanks and getting monstrous piranhas for fun( something like 3x the size and weight of regular piranhas?)… A gentleman in Japan years ago ran an experiment in a mall with a cherry tomato plant that produced thousands of pounds of tomatoes that each were something like the size of baseballs. Anyways to wrap it all together, I wanted to hear your thoughts or knowledge if any. It obviously sounds crazy but with some digging the results are definitely in- even if we adopt understand all of the mechanisms. We do know that having a richer atmosphere means more carbon food for the plant. It's hard to say. Feel free to PM if you interested in carrying this dialogue over another medium outside of RU-vid comments 😁 and thanks for the read if you get to this.

Love your Channel Rob Bob! I am hooked and in the design stage of my first system. Just wondering as a design thought, for getting the maximum Head and flow capacity from your pump. If you pump up into a header tank against gravity at low pressure high flow, then split your flow via gravity feed through to each grow bed and fish tank, the volume of water would be maximised by the peak for the efficiency of the pump. (more volume, less cost, more efficient) When capping the flow, via valve or pressured flow, you would be reducing the flow of theses systems, effectively reducing the effectiveness of the pump with increased losses in the cavitation of the pump impeller or within the electrical losses. With a header tank, any additional overflow in capacity can then be directed via gravity into your fish or back into your sum and increase your water aeration. ventury system Just a thought... I am an electrician and if ever I can help provide knowledge or electrical support, please don't hesitate. (Efficiency of pumps, Energy costs and conversions , Heating cost, and Backup power systems) Cheers Chris
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 2 года назад
Hi Chris. I have seen systems set up like that & they look to work fine. The ones I've seen tend to be for commercial-sized systems more so than smaller backyard builds. It would make sense to pump up to one point & suggested it to H for his build at the Naughty Goat farm. It is something I would like to play around with when I get a larger place. With the smaller mag drive pumps we use, there normally isn't any issues with cavitation & they tend not to use as much electricity when they are throttled back as I was told by an aquaculture designer. I'm not well educated in the ways of electrical engineering so took him at his word. Thanks for the offer. 👍Are you here in SE QLD Chris? Cheers mate & have a top one.
