Welcome to my off-grid project! This week was one of the busiest yet, since I am starting an orchard! So there are many trees and plants to be taken care of. I’m so excited to make this step one step further towards being more self sustaining, and to see these little trees grow over time. Also I’m trying to make the debris area above the stairs a little more beautiful.

Only leave the tree stakes for their first year, especially as you are planting on a slope. After that, remove the stake, by then the roots will have established a good hold of the soil and the wind blowing the trunk around will not uproot the tree. But! The flexing of the trunk in the wind encourages strong, thick and resilient growth. Like human beings, if trees are too coddled, they grow weak. Difficulties promote strength. There's a sermon there somewhere I think.

Great job with your trees! In the winter, around December or before, if you are not there, plant some garlic cloves around your rosebush. They orotect it from pests, and you can have garlic in the summer. You can also plant onions and potatoes in late fall, early winter and dig them up in the spring.

Hi Maya - really enjoying all the projects on your land and as an old avid gardener myself, loving that you're starting to grow things. A tip...allow all the water in your holes to soak away before planting because it displaces important air and oxygen when you backfill, and always add soil to your compost to ensure it's innoculated with local fungi and microbial soil life as it's those which feed your plants. Finally, mulch your trees - pine bark is best as it encourages the kind of fungi trees love BTW - you don't have to worry about the leaves of your walnut trees unless they are black walnut varieties native to the USA - which I don't think any of yours are. Tea can be made with European and English varieties, plus they have have many medicinal properties. Best for the first year or two to put frost fleece on all your tender trees over winter, and if planting more trees, best not to stake - better to leave them free to move and grow strong deep roots and a thick trunk. I could so imagine myself on your lovely piece of land with that magical river...sheer heaven! All the best from a nature loving and no-dig vegie growing 76 year old from rural NSW Australia. x

Maya, I think you are wonderful and are doing an amazing job! Wanted to point out that when you plant a tree (any plant really, but especially trees), it's best not to cover the spot where the trunk meets the roots. That's a sensitive spot for trees (particularly fruit trees) and can be a spot where insects and bacteria get in. I think you might have done that with your lemon tree, and maybe the others. It's quite easy to fix, simply move the earth away from around the trunk until you see the beginning of the roots, and then cover up a little bit, so the roots are covered, but not the trunk. I look forward to your videos!!

I agree with Naomi - would be a bummer, if that would be the reason your trees won,t grow properly. 🤔

Also, its better put nothing in the hole , just the local soil. That soil looks good. Clay is good, rich in minerals, and hold water and organic matter. Compost, and organic fertilizers like horse manure - woody compost only fertilizes a bit after years, at begginning it requires nitrogen to get composted by bacteria- should not be used in the roits, in the hole, just above the soil, as mulch. Specially in clay soil. You are basicly creating a anaerobic composting place. Makes the probability of roting roots much higer. Plants roots dont feed on carbon. They rot in carbon. Its even better to take that bark/peet compost of the pot/rootball out, and plant bare root directly in the native soil. If you want to "soften/loose" the the hole dirt a bit use sand, or even small rocks. Nursery plant are sintetic fertilized regulary, so, if you want a quick start and adaptation spread a bit of slow release npk around the hole, organic or sintetic, which is much more effective. Just for the start, after a few years the tree finds what it need on the soil, air, light, water... lavanders and other like it dont need compost at all, they like dry hard soil. You have a very beautiful flowering cane in the garden that is very invasive , specially in wet climas (its causing great damage in azores), pay atention to it. Spreads by roots. You have a beautiful place. Good luck.
@alansomerville4806
@alansomerville4806 Год назад
More than that, that union is where the tree meets a dwarfing rootstock to keep the tree heading for it's full, potentially 5m height and spread. If the soil/compost is at or over that join, the natural tree above the junction will send out roots and by-pass the dwarfing effect entirely. Tree will be between 2 and 3 times the size you think it will grow to become.

LG EW

It's a pleasure watching you doing all kinds of chores in an always pleasant mood and attitude! and I loved your honest shot with the smudge on your face! you must really like walnuts! One thing I think you will regret soon is your dump next to the beautiful stair. I'm almost sure that you will dig out all that debris because it will bother you. I hope you will reactivate the waterline to the water tanks, the house foremost to the waterwheel! I would hook up a generator to that water wheel. You would get electricity and it would be a beautiful sight, seeing that turning again! And I'm always astonished about all your wardrobe changes! How much cloth do you have? And so far we only saw your work cloth.... :D (I'm stealing your smiley sign, never saw it like this, was wondering what the D meant for quite a while :-) )

Absolutely wonderful to see your planting works and that you are so careful with the little insects. Enjoying myself when I plant new plants. Have created a Tapestry lawn in my garden to benefit the endangered insects. Too bad it's not possible to post pictures of my flower carpet here. You can search for "Tapestry lawn" online if you want. Hope it can inspire you because the threat to the insects is a global problem.

I found in similar heat, here in Ibiza, that placing flat stones all around fruit trees to stop evaporation, made all the difference in their growth. You have abundant water, but perhaps not time to continually be watering all you plant? Hope this helps?

Well done, but you don’t need supports for the trees. The roots strengthen better if the tree is able to sway naturally in the wind.
