I don't have anyone start from the knees, even in our fundamentals classes. Instead we just do 3 & 3 from guard, or half guard, or put the higher belt in mount or side body etc. Seen too many people, even after being explained etiquette, just pull someone over their knees and get tweaked.

Thank you dude. Now I can see why my arm drags are so slopy and my Knee tap doesn't work. Armdrags are like karate hikite (pulling the hand back in the hip as hard as you can) while you drive the attacking hand, in this case the sleeve/wrist hand. And knee taps looks a lot easier if you bend your elbows in. Greetings from Brazil.

@@StillRolling I don't know if it only happens in local clubs around here(in a 70 miles radius I mean). But BJJ teachers are not into teaching those details, they think more you roll, the better you get. Sure this is the truth in some cases, but different people learn in different ways
@StillRolling
@StillRolling 4 года назад
I am a huge believer in efficiency. Jiu-Jitsu is designed to not expend a lot of energy, especially against bigger opponents. If you don't know the details it is hard to be efficient therefore causing you to work harder with less results. Rolling is fun but it's just a test run for the techniques you have learned👍

If all fights and competition starts from the standing position WHYYYY do all BJJ gyms insist on starting from the knees? Why are we giving up the importance of a takedown?
@StillRolling
@StillRolling 4 месяца назад
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZH76Zc9AeAA.html I teach everything from everywhere. I heavily uncourage takedowns at Leviathan as you see in the shared link. I also want to give options to others though who may have to start on the knees more at their gym🤙
@SNAKEEATER1776

@@StillRolling I wasn’t accusing you of not doing so. But As a soon to be purple belt, Ive seen enough practitioners that swear stand-up grappling adds to the risk of injury and reserve it only for competition preparation or competition. Never mind the blown out knees and elbows of some submissions who don’t see them coming. I mean, high school wrestling is safe enough for administrators and parents for the kids. Why can’t there be more emphasis on takedowns? Guard is not where we start. Additionally, ban pulling guard. Penalize that crap as stalling or being passive. it makes the sport so boring.
@StillRolling
@StillRolling 4 месяца назад
I disagree with banning pulling guard. I'd much rather see someone pull guard and and get a quick submission than someone land a takedown and lay on them because they are ahead in points. Exciting matches depend on the people. Not the techniques or rules. I encourage people to learn all aspects of the art👍
@SNAKEEATER1776
@SNAKEEATER1776 4 месяца назад
@@StillRolling I suppose the rules dictate the techniques. Gaming the system, if you will. I believe you’d attract more students if it was more fun to watch. If it was more fun to watch, it would be more popular than on flo grappling, or more popular than exhibition matches of karate combat or UFC fight pass. It’s just so disappointing to see world class athletes in the finals shake hands then sit on their asses. 🤦🏻‍♂️

I always have my guys start one sitting and one kneeling. There is absolutely no point to midget wrestling. It doesn't translate to real takedowns and wastes time and energy. If I see two white belts midget wrestling I immediately break it up and throw them with some of my blue/purple belts.

Honestly I do not see any benefit of starting on the knees. It just makes you alienated to wrestling and judo which you will need in competition and in self defense. It also makes bjj a lot more unrealistic and keeps you from progressing.

The place I train is small u throw 12-15 people in there and it’s tight rolling let alone trying to stand up and wrestle someone. Also it’s not as intimidating to a new guy that isn’t use to going from standing to getting put down. I see your point just point. And totally agree
@glxblt-sd1ze

Knee wrestling is totally useless in bjj training, if you want to wrestle do it standing ; if you don 't, pull guard or try to pass depending of what training partner did
